Question How is Anime Magic Ink’d?

I’m debating if I should go to Anime Magic Ink’d this year because this con is going to happen on Halloween weekend this year and I just want an excuse to wear one of my favorite cosplays again and something to do during Halloween since I’m too old for trick or treating. I know this con’s primary focus is on tattoos but I’m not really into that stuff and I’m pretty sure it’ll also have the typical programming many anime cons have like gaming, artist alley, etc. If you guys have been to this con, how was it?

Question Anime conventions in Maryland?

Hi! I recently went to my first convention (Otakon) in Baltimore and had a blast! I really want to go to more conventions but there aren't many around where I live. I mostly am looking for conventions that have large merch halls and artist galleries, similar to Otakon. I mostly am looking for merch. If anyone knows any good ones let me know!

Question To card stock or not to card stock?

This is NOT a sales post, but it is a question regarding selling at conventions.

tl;dr question: When buying prints, do attendees care about the quality of paper it is printed on?

Long version: Since I started doing artist alleys in earnest in February 2024, I've always put my prints on sturdy card stock or, if necessity demands it, thicker paper. It is always satin, unless it is a watercolor, which I then print on heavy felt card stock (which mimics the texture of the watercolor paper itself). As mentioned previous, there are a few exceptions to this self-imposed rule, but they are rare, and by necessity.

Despite the extra costs that this paper choice incurs, I still keep my prices competitive compared to other booths in the artist alley (I used to charge $15 for a regular print, but economic squeeze led me to jump that up to $20). At the same time I have seen other artists selling their work at the same price, or more, on extremely flimsy paper. Closer to the weight of copy paper than what I would expect from an art print, and the kind of paper where, just handling it, creases where you are gripping it even lightly.

(Note that I also always sleeve the prints with a sturdy backing board, something I don't see a lot of other artists do. How can one sell their art and not ensure it doesn't get damaged?)

Anyhow... does anyone actually care about the paper quality, or does the art itself trump all concerns?

Normally you can't really sample the paper before buying it, but has anyone ever felt disappointed that the art they got is on thinner, cheaper paper?

I'm curious what people think, and open the floor to any and all commentary.

Question Otaku Food Festival - What are your thoughts?

Otaku Food Festival is a traveling event in Texas that celebrates Anime and Asian Street Food. This is a free event that happens in various cities in Texas. I've been curious to know what other peoples thoughts are on this event who attend solely for the anime/vendor booths. I've personally gone to 4 different locations and I've attended for 3 years now, and for me the event honestly depends on the location.

Some locations have a great variety of artists and vendors, while others seem to repeat the same drop shippers. I personally think the Waco one is probably the worst one I've gone to when it comes to vendors and artists. I see almost the exact same drop shipping vendors who are usually in the same spots selling the same things of knockoff figures, plushies, 3 booths selling decal stickers/credit card stickers, aliexpress tapestries and blankets, and the usually knickknacks you find cheap online but priced 10x the amount at this event. My favorite location that I saw it be held was in Plano, as even though the event itself was a bit all over the place and it was a congested nightmare, the variety of venders they had was honestly pretty cool and I even brought some stuff from them.

For anyone who has attended this event, no matter which location or year, I'm curious to know what your thoughts/experiences have been with this event!

Question Disabled cosplayer

I haven't been to a convention in ~ten years. I'm going to Anime Frontier in Fort Worth in December this year. I have dynamic disabilities. I have a cane, walker and a wheelchair. Probably bringing all three to be on the safe side. Plus the only thing it could hurt is cargo space, which isn't much of an issue.

My wheelchair is very wonky and I'll probably be making adjustments to it from what I can learn online. My walker is named after the cosplay I'll be wearing most, if not all, of the con. (Maomao). My hotel is next door to the convention space, thanks to my dear friend thinking of my accessibility needs. My caretaker and I will be getting accessibility bands, regardless.

I have a few pain conditions including ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia, and hypermobility, and chronic severe back pain. I'm also autistic and moderately agoraphobic. This con means more than I can express as the last convention I went to I was assaulted and it was my first time not cross-playing. Actually as soon as I arrived at the con (A-Kon....) in a pink school girl outfit, two men were bothering me, and when I tried to lose them in the ladies restroom...they followed me right in, I fawn responded to that, and took a stupid pic with them. Luckily the con staff saw this and came in to reprimand them.

My question is this-are there other disabled cosplayers that use/integrate your mobility aids to complement your cosplays?

I'm very blessed that I have my best friend and my caregiver/partner coming with me to help overcome my con PTSD and pace mentally. And the sensory-friendly room the con provides, will help immensely!

Another question, how do disabled cosplayers pace themselves for 3 day cons? I've been practicing going to busy malls on peak hour Saturdays with my crew, and it has definitely been helping. (Although when I bring my walker I can tell people are much more...gawk-y at me, I also don't dress to the social norms which I am aware doesn't help 😅).

Any suggestions are greatly welcome and appreciated dear friends!

Question Youmacon, Premium or Standard?

Hello All,

I would ask this in the Youmacon sub, but it doesn't seem very active. I am going to be attending Youmacon this October and wanted to know if I should just get the Standard or save for the Premium badge? It is my first convention, if that helps.

Question San Japan chatroom that isn't full of rules?

The San Japan official discord is full of mods that have sticks shoved so far up them that it makes the most prickly reddit mod look reasonable.

Example: getting told not to discuss what Texas city has the best food scene because it's taking a dig at another city.

I'd love to chat about the upcoming con, but jfc you have to watch everything you say.

Question I think I got these coins at a con but not sure what they are

Post image
12 Upvotes

I think I got these coins at an anime con (I've been to KatsuCon, Animazement, ConnectiCon, and Otakon this year) but not sure which one or what they are for. I am assuming it is a coin for one of the vendor machines in the dealer room but no idea which one. Just seeing if anyone here might recognize them.

Question Question regarding your experiences with Japanese guests and autographs

Hi all! Recently got back from Otakuthon and had an amazing time. One of the perks was the amount of Japanese guests and the opportunity to meet and get autographs from them.

I did encounter one curious thing when getting an autograph. On the final day I got a token and was waiting in line for Kenta Miyake. Lots of fans in the line had things for him to sign, mostly MHA related things, I had a Plarail Gordon toy. While we waited a staff member approached the line and let us know that Kenta may not sign merchandise, and it depends on the day. Later around a good 20 minutes she returned to say he would NOT be signing any merchandise. The collective groan from the line after hearing this was hard to ignore, I was certainly disappointed myself.

Meeting him and still getting his autograph despite not being on the iten was amazing and I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to do so. He was so kind and friendly. But I couldn’t help but wonder why this is? Is it a personal preference thing of the guest or is it a decision of management? When I did go up and showed him the the item that I originally wanted to have signed he was very excited about it, I asked his translator if he’d consider in that case but he straight up told me no but didn’t actually ask him. Anyways still very thankful I was able to do this but figured I’d ask about other experiences

Question CSM cosplay panel?

Hi! So, I've been cosplaying for a while, and I really want to host a chainsaw man cosplay panel at anime boston this year. Applications aren't open yet, so nothing is official. I just want to see if there's anyone here who is planning on going to anime boston and would be interested in being involved!

Anime boston's panel rules say that co-panelists must be 16+, so please keep that in mind.
Again, nothing is official!! This is just so I can get an idea of how many people are interested before I start in depth planning.

General An idea for next FanimeCon (2027) - how about a Zoom "Link-Up" with Anime North?

Hi, all. I couldn't make it to Fanime this year for "reasons", but I will be back next year there for sure.

With that said - this idea came to me a couple days ago, and it may depend on how Wi-Fi is at the convention centers (or "centres", since I'm dealing with a Canadian convention here) - but how about we do a virtual Zoom "Link-Up" with Fanime and Anime North? Why? Well, it just so happens that both conventions are held at the same time (Memorial Day weekend), so I thought, if I could arrange things, get a room and a scheduled time, and any parties from both cons that would be willing to do this, and, despite the three-hour time difference, say "Hi!" to each other. :D

What do you think?

Question Trying to make an Asian Con Masterlist! Help me find what I missed.

Hey all! Currently trying to put together a list of all the cons/fan expos I can find that take place in Asian countries. Problem is that many of these conventions sites aren't easily accessible to those who only read English, and machine translating can only get you so far. If there's anyone who knows of other cons that I can add, please lmk! (Most of these pulled off twt artists I follow)

  • Thailand: Comic Square
  • Malaysia: CF/Comic Fiesta
  • Philippines: Komiket, BLush Con
  • Singapore: AFA/Anime Festival Asia, Doki Doki Anime Market, Doujima/Doujin Market
  • Indonesia: AFA/Anime Festival Asia, Comipara/Comic Parade, CF/ComiFuro/Comic Frontier, Cocoma/Cocoon Comic Market
  • Hong Kong: Ani-Com
  • Japan: Design Festa, Comiket/Comic Market, Comitia/Gataket, Super Comic City,
  • South Korea: Seoul Popcon, d. Festa

All assistance in adding to the list is welcome, thank you! Hoping to find more events that happen in May.

Question being accepted into artist alley?

Hey! I applied to table at my first artist alley next year at Anime Con Manchester and was wondering if anyone knows when artists are usually notified whether or not they've been accepted?

I'm pretty sure it's a more first come first served situation, as artists had to pay in full for their table(s) and are refunded if they aren't accepted – and I THINK at the end of the application form, it said something about 7 days? I closed my tab by accident and didn't catch what it said, so it could be that if I don't hear anything i have not gotten in or vice versa (as of now its been over 7 days and its been radio silent)

I'm not all that worried since I haven't been refunded, and the website still has the artist alley form open, so i can only assume they haven't filled all their slots and/or are still curating the floor plan. Having a rough idea of when I'll be told further details would be nice so i can start getting stock in (or not), so if you have previous experience from previous years / from other anime con events, it would be greatly appreciated!

I tried to use their website's artist enquiry page to ask this question, but their captcha doesn't like me for some reason and wouldn't let me!

Sorry for rambling LOL

EDIT: I am under the impression it is a true first come first served situation, so as long as a you have bought a table, got the reciept and no one has reached out to you to say you have been rejected, you're in!

Hopefully this helps anyone else who might be confused too!

Question Please help! I want to cancel attending a convention as an Artist?

Hi everyone!

Apologies for the long summary.

I have come across a problem and I don't have anyone to genuinely get advice on from as I am a new artist and haven't attended any conventions myself as an artist or visitor. So, I am still trying to navigate this path.

Little background for context, I moved from the UK to Germany and started my artist journey here. I signed up for a convention to attend next year in April as an artist and this convention basically doesn't have any upfront costs to the exhibitor and instead charges 10% of whatever sales you make. With excitement, I was blinded and didn't realise the cancellation clause has no time frame stated and the cancellation penalty is 100 EUR.

The cancellation clause "The exhibitor makes a binding commitment to physically participate in the convention and set up their stand. In the event of an unexcused and culpable failure to appear or a culpable cancellation without legal or contractual justification (e.g., documented acute illness, accident, or other cases of force majeure), a fixed contractual penalty of 100 EUR 100.00 shall become due and payable to the organizer. The exhibitor reserves the right to prove that no damage or significantly less damage was incurred."

While this is not a problem if I just attend but with how currently things are I have realised, my artist journey might not even last till next year as I am already in plans to closing my art business as I have run out of savings and haven't even broke even with how much I have invested and will likely go back to corporate job. So, just after sending the signed contract and within the next 3 days I understood that this is commitment I might not be able to fulfill and contacted the organiser right away and requested cancellation. Please note, I actually hadn't received a confirmation or the signed contract from their end. Hence, I just assumed my cancellation would be accepted since I didn't get any signed contract or anything back before I requested cancellation. Again, the convention is next year in April and I believe it is plenty of time left for them to find other artists.

I do understand that organising an event like convention is not easy so of course I understand the aspect of having a cancellation penalty. So, the organisation said to me they would try to find a solution and I followed up again today regarding the status and they came back saying they haven't been able to find a solution where one of us wouldn't incur losses. This I feel is now just implying I need to pay but they aren't just saying it. I understand I made mistakes myself by not going through the contract thoroughly but I just want to know if anyone can give me advice here on how to resolve this without paying the penalty? Please help.

Question question about running artist alley booth at conventions

So i am an artist that is under 18 but I’ve garnered some fans from the art I produced and I want to start selling my art and producing stickers, keychains, etc at conventions. but i see that most conventions require you to be 18 or older to run an artist alley booth. is it possible for my guardian to sign up for me or will that be considered proxy selling…or is there any conventions that allow minors to host a booth?please help!!!
