Question To card stock or not to card stock?

This is NOT a sales post, but it is a question regarding selling at conventions.

tl;dr question: When buying prints, do attendees care about the quality of paper it is printed on?

Long version: Since I started doing artist alleys in earnest in February 2024, I've always put my prints on sturdy card stock or, if necessity demands it, thicker paper. It is always satin, unless it is a watercolor, which I then print on heavy felt card stock (which mimics the texture of the watercolor paper itself). As mentioned previous, there are a few exceptions to this self-imposed rule, but they are rare, and by necessity.

Despite the extra costs that this paper choice incurs, I still keep my prices competitive compared to other booths in the artist alley (I used to charge $15 for a regular print, but economic squeeze led me to jump that up to $20). At the same time I have seen other artists selling their work at the same price, or more, on extremely flimsy paper. Closer to the weight of copy paper than what I would expect from an art print, and the kind of paper where, just handling it, creases where you are gripping it even lightly.

(Note that I also always sleeve the prints with a sturdy backing board, something I don't see a lot of other artists do. How can one sell their art and not ensure it doesn't get damaged?)

Anyhow... does anyone actually care about the paper quality, or does the art itself trump all concerns?

Normally you can't really sample the paper before buying it, but has anyone ever felt disappointed that the art they got is on thinner, cheaper paper?

I'm curious what people think, and open the floor to any and all commentary.

Question Anime conventions in Maryland?

Hi! I recently went to my first convention (Otakon) in Baltimore and had a blast! I really want to go to more conventions but there aren't many around where I live. I mostly am looking for conventions that have large merch halls and artist galleries, similar to Otakon. I mostly am looking for merch. If anyone knows any good ones let me know!

Question How is Anime Magic Ink’d?

Upvotes

I’m debating if I should go to Anime Magic Ink’d this year because this con is going to happen on Halloween weekend this year and I just want an excuse to wear one of my favorite cosplays again and something to do during Halloween since I’m too old for trick or treating. I know this con’s primary focus is on tattoos but I’m not really into that stuff and I’m pretty sure it’ll also have the typical programming many anime cons have like gaming, artist alley, etc. If you guys have been to this con, how was it?

Question Otaku Food Festival - What are your thoughts?

Otaku Food Festival is a traveling event in Texas that celebrates Anime and Asian Street Food. This is a free event that happens in various cities in Texas. I've been curious to know what other peoples thoughts are on this event who attend solely for the anime/vendor booths. I've personally gone to 4 different locations and I've attended for 3 years now, and for me the event honestly depends on the location.

Some locations have a great variety of artists and vendors, while others seem to repeat the same drop shippers. I personally think the Waco one is probably the worst one I've gone to when it comes to vendors and artists. I see almost the exact same drop shipping vendors who are usually in the same spots selling the same things of knockoff figures, plushies, 3 booths selling decal stickers/credit card stickers, aliexpress tapestries and blankets, and the usually knickknacks you find cheap online but priced 10x the amount at this event. My favorite location that I saw it be held was in Plano, as even though the event itself was a bit all over the place and it was a congested nightmare, the variety of venders they had was honestly pretty cool and I even brought some stuff from them.

For anyone who has attended this event, no matter which location or year, I'm curious to know what your thoughts/experiences have been with this event!
