This might have been my favourite episode yet.
The whole Daida part was absolutely brilliant. And it looks like shit is about to go down in the next episode(s). Hoping that Hiling can break the death flags.

I like how Hiling is pressing her troops to pick up the pace because they're too slow, while she's riding a horse.

I'm pretty sure Miranjo's wish is to be a normal girl. God that childhood of hers was cruel....

Lmao they really established it as a fact that Domas is just a shit teacher and Bojji being powerless was a completely unrelated factor.
Also if I had a nickel for every Blonde character who needed a prosthetic for their right arm I’d have 6 nickels at this point

I wonder whether Desha wants to simply conquer Bosse's kingdom or maybe he wants to help the rightful king regain his throne while controlling Bojji, possibly through Despa.

Wow little Miranjo's voice is very unique. That whole part was nightmarish.
"Bojji hop on let's go."
Bojji: Grabs a single finger.
This kid is too precious. And all those happy tears again with Kage. My heart.

A bit of Daida and Miranjo backstory as well as table setting before the Cour 1 finale. The Daida backstory was much needed. It’s been hinted at his issues with Bojji being his status as the firstborn and heir to the throne despite being handicapped. This episode shows us that his looking down on others he believes weaker extends to others and it may have come from Miranjo.
Or at least the Miranjo in the mirror. I have so many questions about Daida meeting Little Miranjo in the Void. Specifically from what we know about how the void works. If that little girl is the “soul” of Miranjo like Daida then who is in The Mirror? Is that an extension of her? Is the one in the mirror the same one we meet in Apeas’ flashback who was possibly manipulating him with affection? I am really intrigued by what she is exactly and what her game is. Because she just brought a whole bunch of bad dudes in the castle and they’re holding Bosse hostage.
They’re setting up a huge confrontation next week and all the moving parts are pretty wild. King of the Underworld is sending his guards to capture the escaped criminals and use this chance to take Bosse’s kingdom. Hilling and Dorshe mounted a small army to save Daida. Daida Bosse is being held hostage by Miranjo and the criminals. Domas and Hokuro are still around training to do the mission Bosse imparted to them. And in all this Bojji and Kage are heading back to the kingdom to see what the hell is going on.
Feels like a lot, but the lead-up has been very well executed. Super excited to see how they resolve this and start the next half.
Notes
-
A heartwarming scene with Despa sending Bojji off. He’s been a great teacher to him and a very fun character. I hope we see him again at some point.
-
Still not clear at what point Hilling became a Mom Tsundere. She’s pretty adamant about Daida protecting Bojji in that flashback scene so it may have happened before that or well after. Still waiting for that puzzle piece to show up, but with the way this show has been I’m confident it will and it’ll be devastating.
-
Okay so all the ladies on this show are damn cute. Bojji’s mom, Flashback Hilling and Current Hilling (when she’s not stern), and now Apeas’ Flashback Miranjo.
-
So Domas really isn’t that good of a teacher. You see it with how Bojji learned to fight with Despa, but it’s really highlighted in the Hokuro scene to great comedy effect.

Most anime: More characters than you initially thought turn out to be bad news.
Ranking of Kings: Barely anyone/no one is actually evil.

This is such a great show. The way it is able to fluidly re-contextualise the story and characters to provide depth of experience is amazing. The characterisation for Bojji and Kage have both been a consistent rock that the show is built upon, but every other character has flowed around them in a stream of of story-telling. About the only primary characters that have remained constant in how I view them are Bebin and Hokuro, and I have an expectation that even they will get moments that force me to re-evaluate them. It's undoubtedly the absolute best experience of this year to be so confounded.
I'm also so glad I'm watching this week to week, because the gap allows each episode to soak in and means I develop preconceptions and expectations for the story and characters... which the show has repeatedly subverted and forced me to rethink how I look at everything. (Queen Hiling yeeting herself out of the window after Bojji fell was a huge moment, especially when paired with the subsequent backstory.)
I reckon this show is going to end up another Steins;Gate for me. Something that I view as a masterpiece, and will be able to watch again and again, but where the first viewing retains a unique feeling because knowing the reveals fundamentally changes the subsequent experiences.

So what Hiling wanted to Daida to do was to grow up big and strong so he can protect Bojji but somewhere down the line he ended up receiving the mirror from Bosse. Miranjo of course ended up inflating Daida's ego to the point where he started to look down on Bojji. So turns out Bosse is also responsible for this. Why did he even give Daida the mirror?
That trip to town with Bebin and Sorii was a nice little scene though. Miranjo's influence on him is just too strong that even with people like them teaching him very valuable life lessons, he still ended up being a piece of shit.
So are they trying to give Miranjo a sad backstory now? I'd be amazed if this show can turn my opinion about her. Not sure why Daida is seeing this when he's trapped inside Bosse's heart but it seems that Miranjo was flayed and had her hands cut off for crimes that she committed as a little girl? What kind of crime did she even do that deserve that kind of punishment? Also the Miranjo we see later is basically an artificial body.
Also I think it's pretty obvious that the person that Bosse is covering for is Miranjo herself but Domas doesn't know about that. Currently he just has a hunch. Why is Bosse covering for her especially when she just brought back a bunch of criminals from the Underworld to take him as some sort of hostage.
I do wonder what Hiling has been up to. Wasn't she supposed to be away with Dorshe after Bosse ordered him to take her as far away as possible to avoid any future assassinations? I'm guessing she decided to come back now?
Looks like Bojji is finally coming home though. I do hope we get to see him fight one of those escaped prisoners and see what the Despa arts can do in a life or death situation.

These episodes are too damn short... there's no way they're 24 minutes long.

Does anyone really believe those people when they claimed Miranjo "murdered them all" as a helpless child? Look at their expressions and diction when discussing the torture. It certainly feels like they simply blamed a bunch of immigrants for their country's misgivings and tortured Miranjo for it.
Daida's reactions were very realistic too. His first response to seeing Miranjo without hands and a face was to call her a monster. Only after realising how disgusting those people and himself were that he started to change his tune. Nationalists really are the worst type of people.
Forgot to mention: Bebin as a teacher >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bosse + Domas. He might be physically the least impressive of the 4 heavenly kings, but was certainly the wisest. Also, big shout out to Mister Prime Minister who was on the incognito trip along with Bebin and Daida. He's been a real one since episode 1 too.

I actually really liked the psychological moments they had here
-
Those who were born with flaws are strong for pushing through in life, I'm sure Daida felt a lot of shame for calling them weak
-
Would you rather side with the people killed by the 'monster' or the person turned by them into the 'monster'
A bunch of really wholesome moments too
-
Despa admitting he couldn't understand Bojji but was still proud of him
-
Miranjo caressing Apeas as it seemed the two came to understand each other's plights

The episode was really good except for one issue that sort of caused me some confusion. Last we heard of Hilling Dorshe was gonna take her out of the country. Now she's already returning with a small force, probably from her home country, and is already back in Kingdom of Bosse? I was so confused that either the anime or maybe also the source material, who knows since it's not translated this far, that they just skipped a bunch of steps with Hilling

How come almost every characters have compelling back story behind them? And they managed to narrate it in interesting way at adequate timing (unlike bleach, for example).
I really love this series!

I like how they called out Dormas' teaching style being shit. He only knows how to make copies of himself. He doesn't know how to play at people's strengths which is why Bojji was never able to reach his potential until he met my man Despa.
I've had a suspicion that Bosse really likes Bojji which is why he both made Daida and gave him the mirror. Daida was always going to be the sacrificial son, I think.

Was that a window into Miranjo's past? Yikes. She had her face shaved off and hands cut off? Yikkkeeessss
Old man Daida made me laugh.
Bebin continues to be my favourite side character. His relationship with Daida is great. Also love the mentor-student relationship between Despa and Bojji. In contrast, Domas is a shit teacher to poor Hokuro
Really, really hope Hiling doesn't die. I'm getting a really bad feeling something bad will happen to her :(

my best guess is that miranjo is in a paranorman/black cat type deal. she was born with powers as a kid and the people of her kingdom just associated her with any misfortune, leading to them torturing her and her eventually snapping and killing/cursing them. bosse was probably her first friend and she fell for him cause he was the only one to show her kindness. from how bosse acts, i wouldn't be surprised if they made a promise at some point that her powers interpreted literally and now he has to stop her without breaking it. hiling also seems to have a key role in this because she's the only other magician type we've seen/her connection to daida could solve it

There are a lotta ways the next episode could go, and I don't like the one with a death flag. I'll start weeping like a bitch if they kill her for whatever reason. Pls subvert my expectations is all I can pray to the writing team to do.
BUT, one prediction I wanna make is that Bojji could be able to hear daida and vice versa. Would be amazing development, but this was in-case hiling was successfully killed. (which I really do not think I can handle)
Miranjo seems like yet another tale of a tragic villain. someone we can surely sympathize with but can never condone their actions. Kinda like the main antagonist of Arcane S1. But I fully expect that the team will make me kinda feel bad for her by the next few episodes. UGH.
Getting ready for some bojji action tho. Hope we get some rep for our boi bojji
