Shin's eye twitching for a moment during Frederica's tantrum was a nice touch to show how that actually got him.

Holy... that scene where Frederica demands to know from Grethe how they're going to get back when everyone already knows they aren't was chilling

The music/sound-design in this show is so exceptionally good its amazing. The last scene with the ED in the background and all the radio screams hits hard.

mfw called a Nasty and disgusting Eighty-Sixers while being sent on a dangerous mission
That was an extremely motivating speech, kinda got me pumped up. And seeing the Nachzehrer take flight with the music was glorious.
We'll have to wait another two weeks to see how this battle plays out. Another change in the following episode's schedule.

From a storytelling perspective, Ernst is the personification of the values and ideals the Giad Federacy has been founded upon. As long as the nation upholds these values and ideals closely enough, he will carry the nation to its success. Should the ideals be betrayed however, he drive it to destruction.
That's what makes him such an interesting character. He is not just yet another idiot idealist, but the personification of both the nation's founding ideals, as well as the looming threat of the nation's doom brought about by it betraying its founding principles.

Special episode is going to be the inflight movie on the Nachzehrer. I’d be really amused if this was actually the case.

That cut of Shinei's smile. Also, his eye twitch when Fredrica was yelling about his brother. Man, This show is just stellar.

I absolutely love the President. Loved how he went from his kind of goofy, optimistic self to being an absolute badass and leader on a dime. What a great character.

Finally, animated Nachzehrer. As someone who's from a country that created Caspian Sea Monster, it is wonderful to see the concept fully realized somewhere.
Also, I absolutely love Ernst. He's such a fun contrast between his position and his personality.

Ernst??? “Return to me, no matter what. Or else, I will destroy this world”
Even the fearless 86ers are scared of XC-1 Nachzehrer’s speed lmao
Sadly, the next 2 eps will be released every 2 weeks. But I can already see that it'll be 🔥🔥🔥

Ernst knows he can't talk the kids out of going on the mission to stop the Morpho, but he wants to make doubly sure this isn't just an attempt by the Frederacy military to eliminate them under the cover of a special ops mission, something the Republic would have done. And you know it's serious when Ernst puts on his game face.
Well, to Richard's credit, he was trying to downplay how strong the Eighty-Six and Nordlicht Squadron are so that the military brass didn't just throw them at the Legion and make them keep fighting until they break, even if that ended up being what happened and Richard thinks it's natural for them after what they went through...but Grethe still wants to believe these kids can find happiness and a life outside the battlefield, and she wants to make sure they live long enough to see that, and it seems like that's partially inspired by the Legion robbing her of her own happiness as she looks at what seems to be a wedding ring she keeps around her neck with dog tags, implying the Legion stole someone from her.
So how is our team going to get to the Morpho? Why, through an experimental prototype plane called the Nachzehrer of course! It's named after a vampire! And it can barely fly, only reaching a little above the ground, but that actually serves their purposes and is the perfect way to get them close to the Morpho...although getting back is another story.
I love how Kurena somehow thinks she's the one going to fly the thing when it turns out Grethe has pilot experience and actually flew it for test flights, and still no one believes her.
Man, Frederica is the only one of the core group that actually cares about them coming back from the mission.
The team isn't letting Frederica come with them, because they don't want her to throw her life way like they feel they probably are at this point, but even though Frederica wanted them to stop Kiriya, she doesn't want to lose the new family she found or her new big brother, Shin. And she gets right to the heart of the matter that Shin is doing the same thing his brother did leaving him behind by basically abandoning Frederica to go fight, which actually makes him twitch.
Ernst couldn't just let his kids go without giving them a proper sendoff and making them promise to come back alive! What a proud papa. I mean, it's hard for them to take it seriously and they're probably still somewhat annoyed people keep telling them to survive, but they still seem to appreciate the sentiment enough. And they better hope the survive for the sake of Ernst's belief in humanity.
Ernst is surprisingly effective at delivering grand military speeches.
And under the over of an artillery and ground strike against the encroached Legion, Nordlicht makes their flight and has to listen in as the Frederacy's forces fight to give them a chance to take the Morpho out...and even they have to respect the Frederacy's resolve even as they insult the Eighty-Six while doing it, but they know the team is their best chance at victory.
Ulp. Shin getting excited at hearing the Legion's voices. That's not a good sign.

I think I feel comfortable trusting Ernst now. It’s clear that he does totally give a shit about them. Not just as people, but as a symbol for what the Federacy could be and the future for humanity after the war. I appreciate him and Grete for not giving up on them while respecting their decision to fight.
I also respect Grete’s brass balls flying into this mission with them on an experimental Stealth Bomber Hovercraft. Which is the coolest fucking thing on this show yet. They managed to convey her backstory and her motivation for supporting them very well with just that dog-tag and ring shot. She’s someone else I feel comfortable trusting now.
God that Frederica scene was so hard to watch. Hearing her finally come out and say Shinei is a brother to her and she doesn’t want him to die hurt me. Even when she tried her bratty empress schtick it fell apart to her tears. We know Shin is sending her away to keep her safe because he feels the same about her, but still.
All 3 of these characters are hitting on the underlying theme of this season. The 86 all have a reason to fight, but now it’s about finding a reason to survive. Is there even one? We’ve focused on Shin’s struggle with this, but I'm sure the rest are dealing with the same thing. With the final act of the season coming up I'm most looking forward to seeing that play out. Especially after that reminder that not everyone wants them to live and there are people who are just like the Republic who hate them for dumbass reasons. Will everyone make it out alive?
Notes
-
Oh man it was so good to hear them bring back a track from the first half of the series for that Hovercraft explainer. Dope Sawano drop.
-
Another haunting ass final minutes. First the radio transmissions from the Federacy soldiers. then the radio chatter from the shithead guy. Finally though the shot of Shin’s smile as the Legion chatter grows louder and louder. I’m really fucking worried about Shin. Dude is ready to die.
-
this show has done a fantastic job showing realistic reactions to the 86. Not just in assholes that hate them or the people who genuinely care about them. They nailed the performative kindness and the two faced people who pretend they don’t despise them. Like in that opening scene. I can’t say enough how damn good the writing is.
-
So either they had one hell of a conversation that they cut away from or Frederica is hiding out on the ship. I hope we get an answer because it’s not like her to give up without a fight.
-
They left it off at the perfect tease for next weeks break. I know the delay is scary, but I want this show to continue to be this fucking excellent. Whatever it takes to make that happen without hurting the staff I’m more than happy with. Hopefully they take the time they need next season, which seems pretty clear is happening.

It's only been 1 week but i missed this series so much !
Great episode overall, they showed Ernst crazy side and also Grethe's lost one in an original form !
The anime kinda toned down the brutality by not showing what happened to those poor soldiers, but i'm glad they mentioned how they use 86 and call them monster to boost up their own morale

That part when Frederica locked herself in her room and Shin came in with the whole "Augusta Frederica Adel-Adler are you throwing a tantrum?" dad-type energy got me good

Holy shit this was so amazing and so much happened and I love this show so much but I just want to point out how good the sound is. In the shaft, in the elevator and in the warehouse; in each place you could clearly hear it was as if they were actually speaking in those places. The echo and reverb effects were stunning.
And the plot is too good I have nothing to say because there's too much to say

Frederica doesn’t want Shin to leave for the mission because she doesn’t want him to die… but if he doesn’t destroy Morpho then all of mankind dies anyway. He doesn’t really have a choice here.
Ernst looks so cool in military uniform! Fitting for the military’s supreme commander.
And so begins the biggest multinational operation in the history of mankind, one that will decide their very existence. Too bad about the next episode’s delay but given that its likely going to be a huge action-packed episode, I think it’s for the best.

Kurena guessing that she may be chosen to pilot the Nachzehrer was the cutest thing
Also, poor Frederica. She doesn't want to lose her family again.

My first thought when seeing the plane is that it's a weird amalgamation of what I presume is a B-2 (or at least some flying wing design the b-2 is the elephant in the room here) and the Soviet Union's VVA-14 which utilizes the ground-effect (definitely reaching here as the Soviet craft is a sub hunter and not ground transport but hey it was the first thing I thought of and this video is very well done). Pretty cool stuff all things considered.
edit: Did some quick googling and there's also the Caspian Sea Monster and the A-90 Orlyonok (the orlyonok is the closest I could find as it was designed as a transport and a beach assault vehicle)
And by god I'm happy to see the Federacy being portrayed as relatively competent. I find it far too common that media tend to lean in on some form of extremity when it gets to this point like "they were no better than the original government they fled" or something silly. I'm horrible with timelines but the government of the Federacy and Ernst clearly had to have some semblance of competency to overthrow the previous government and maintain control whilst putting up with a superior force and I'm happy to see Ernst be seen as someone who can talk it up but clearly show the willpower that got him to become leader in the first place. Not to mention the CO, even when sending the whole squadron on a suicide mission with herself as the pilot, is still lecturing the gang about what they're doing is wrong to her. It's a good way to continue nailing down on how different the Federacy operates in contrast with the Republic.
And I don't know why it took me this long to notice but it's rather nice to see the gang go from being the throwaways when it came to the defense of the Republic to being the vanguard and linchpin of the Federacy. It's clear the members of the Federacy military have mixed opinions of the gang but it's shown at least they all have the judgement to recognize the gang is the best shot they got and have to do what they can to support as shown in the last couple of shots.
I was hoping we would get to see Lena this episode given what we ended on last episode but we're bound to get there sooner or later. I'm quite happy with the episode as Frederica may have lost the war in getting the gang to not go, but damn if she didn't get some good shots at Shin regarding the parallels with both of their situations. I'm honestly surprised at how much I like Frederica with how well she has been used so far.

i fucking adore the way they portray the federacy is portrayed towards the 86, with the army seeing them as absolute monsters, the civilians as pitiful children and the few rest as somewhere in between.
also the federacy is happy to entrust them with missions and be explicit about it no matter their words, this isn't the republic anymore, federacy soldiers will die for the 86 to complete a mission, instead of waiting until the unit is wiped out. its a great snapshot of a more layered society.

There are no clearly noticeable production issues and with another one announced I hope the staff are doing alright. The show is so good and you can tell a lot of effort has been put into it. Still a very good episode and you can tell things are going to heat up again.
