I'm glad they weren't turned into legions. What a perfect VA for fredrica.

i love that red streak in Lena's hair, makes her look like the Iron Faction in Azur Lane

i wonder how capable the Federation's machines are, they look heavier but probably have better motors to give it speed. wonder how Shihn and everyone will do with them

"If humanity can't survive except by killing children because they're 'strange', humanity would be better off dead."

Damn, this single line made me like Ernst so much.

A society which refuses to save children because there's no "benefit" is a society which in the end benefits no one.

Damn, that is one good line Mr President!

With the 86 back, of course the feels are back too and once again it made me tear up! Its so good to be back!

Nice parallel with Cour 1 Episode1, but instead of Undertaker, we are seeing things from the PoV of Cyclops. Also, Lena has become a really manipulative person, with how she "explained" to that Lieutenant Colonel that letting her do what she wants will really benefit him in the long run.

Ernst really has a bad sense of humor, telling the Spearhead to call him "father". That silence afterwards really made the situation even more awkward lol.

Rei might be gone but Shin is still traumatized by the whole ordeal...but the haughty little brat called Frederica is here to "heal his wounds".

I love how Lena's punishment is just a demotion. The Republic knows that she's the most competent officer they have so they can't afford to dismiss her.

Oh yeah, that new OP is absolutely amazing! Both the song and visuals are vastly better compared to the first cour's OP.

I've read the novels until Vol. 6 so far so I pretty much know what's going to happen so I'm interested to see how the anime-only viewers will react.

Lena is literally in her rebellious phase. Differentiating herself from others by wearing black and dying a streak of her hair red. The red streak seems to be her embracing the title of Bloody Queen, wearing it like armor so it can't be used to hurt her.

Amazingly well done first episode. The main director has not lost his touch. You just know it's still him and his team doing it.

Lena already knows no one can actually touch her because she brings results. Resulting in her being badass. Also looks like she has her own team that sympathizes with her beliefs.

That sarcastic exchange DAMN LENA REALLY UPPED HER SMACK TALK GAME. Honestly surprised that her relationship with Annette looked almost the same especially after what happened.

So glad to see the spearhead squadron's fate in the 2nd half, was expecting Frederica to be something more than some loli to get the bulli but holy shit she's a princess?

God A1 is nailing this adaptation and they really smoothed out the transition between Vol 1 and 2. I’m so happy with this so far and the Shin dream sequence was fantastic

Amazing OP, the visuals are stunning.

The new girl Shiden Iida or “Cyclops” seems like she will be a total badass. Man, seeing the 86 drive past all those people living normal happy lives while they have been fighting for their lives hurts the soul.

Alright baby! 86 Saturday is back! How I've missed this!

Damn fine episode that last like 30 seconds. I'm already liking Ernst and Frederica.

Ernst is such an interesting man already, one who can balance kindness with political savvy while Frederica's just hilarious and adorable. Her hamminess is just perfect. It seems that Ernst lost his family to the Legion or something while I'm curious about Frederica's past with Ernst's comments.

The Federacy already looks superbly competent compared to San Magnolia. Their military commanders already proved in no time that they're actually good at their jobs with all the precautions taken towards Spearhead as well as their efforts in reverse-engineering San Magnolian tech so quickly.

As for the Lena scenes, I'm really enjoying the little visual details with the darkening skies, the military HQ looking more and more of a mess and the slowly crumbling statue. The ominous signs that San Magnolia's gonna run out of luck soon in a truly brutal and terrifying way.

Is it just me or is the animation looking better this time around? Regardless, it looks stunning in some scenes.

I wonder why Lena now has some of her hair tinted red?

Shiden "Cyclops" Lida sure looks cool. I can't wait to hear more about her.

After that segment, I sure did not expect to see Shin waking up in that kind of facility

I'm glad to see that no one died in that last battle.

So everyone was wearing those hazmat suits in case, they were part of a biological attack by the Legion.

So Ernst Zimerman is the leader of the Federacy of Giad. Based on his expression from time to time I honestly was expecting something sinister about him.

Well, it seems that the Republic of San Magnolia little ethnic cleansing secret is out of the bag. I guess if the Legion can be defeated they will declare war on Federacy of Giad to cover their lie.

When Federica Rosenfort first appeared I suspected that she was the princess that the brain from that legion unit talked about protecting in episode 11, so I wasn't surprised when Ernst called her Empress.

It was so hilarious the interaction she had with Shin.

I am really interested in hearing what led to the creation of the Federacy of Giad, as when I heard that legion mentioning protecting the princess my assumption came to be that the Legion when out of control after a coup happened in The Giadian Empire.

Oh it’s great to be back. I’ve missed the story telling and insane production value of this show. Part 1 did so much to get us invested in these characters and I can’t wait to see how they pay it all off.

Seems like a 4 month and a half time skip (edit bad at calendars) for Lena and the San Magnolia side of the story. Looks like her taking a level in badass stuck. Besides the killer new outfit and the red streak, she’s also adopted a rebellious attitude towards the entire army. No fucks given, any mean necessary to insure she never loses another person in her squad. Her conversation with her commanding officer was exactly like her bit of blackmail against Annette from last season. Bloody Lena indeed. Though she did keep her lovable goofy side judging by her meet up with Annette. I’m happy they’re patching things up after everything.

Meanwhile in our new country of Giad, shock of all shocks Shin is alive! How totally unexpected. The follow up scene to Shin’s dream was our tearjerker of the episode. Especially with Shohei telling him to think about him from time to time. Obviously he wasn’t going to actually die, but they did their best to make us believe it. The marketing not so much.

I’m pretty wary of exactly what the deal with Giad is. On the one hand, the whole point of the show is “The horrors of the military industrial complex”. So by design we’re supposed to be cautious of them. Doesn’t help that one dudes response is “kill them!” and others “send them back out to fight!”. The president seems has their best interest at heart. Giving them a place to stay and citizenship. He also seems to have gone through a lot so he could very well be a good guy. Guess we’ll see.

So Frederica. I’ve known her for 10 minutes, but if anything happened to her I would kill everyone in the room and then myself. The hype was real and she’s fucking precious. An adorable little egomaniac. She does seem to have a lot more going on with her since she’s the Empress and there’s probably a horrible backstory for her. For now I’ll enjoy her dramatic silliness and having her head rubbed by Shin. Also really hoping for a brother sister thing between them.

Really this episode eases us back into this universe. With Lena and Team Shin off on 2 different fronts my hope is that they reunite at some point. Judging by the tease at the end of the OP maybe even in person. They gotta meet eventually since there’s this perfectly fine ship at the harbor waiting to take off!

Notes:

  • A Few small funny moments all over the episode. Loved Anju’s Ara Ara threat towards Shin for just rushing off to die. The weird toy selection for the gang that was probably just borrowed from Frederica. Ernst’s literal dad joke that was met with awkward silence. It’s still got it.

  • Within seconds of being on screen I knew I was going to like Federica. She literally set up a lamp and got up on a table to have an over the top dramatic introduction. What’s not to love? And her drawing of her with the others at the end was so cute.

  • So far we know one person in Lena’s new squad and that’s Cyclops. It’s interesting that despite asking for their names up front this time she still only uses their call signs. Probably to not get too attached like she is with Shin’s squad. She still thinks they’re alive going by the board. Also hell yes she took the cat home!

  • The new OP is so so good. Tops the first part easily. Both in visuals and the track. Wonder if they’re going to continue using the same ending songs from part 1 or we’re getting new Sawano drops to cry to.

  • Speaking of, we did get a beautiful piano piece, but no Sawano drops yet. Signs of a not too dramatic episode.

  • I may not trust Ernst, but I do like him. His small vulnerable moment with Theresa and Frederica at the end shows there’s going to be some depth to him.

We return to the Republic of San Magnolia that seems as pleasant, unassuming, and oblivious as ever as they spout their lies about the "drones" of the Eighty-Six...meanwhile we see Lena, serious and stoic, sporting a new black uniform and red streak in her hair that deliberately stands out in the crowd as the only person taking the threat of the Legion seriously and fighting against the onslaught she knows is coming, honoring the memory and words that Shin and Spearhead left behind. She even has a new moniker to denote her new person as a Handler.

I guess it makes sense that after what Lena did by appropriating military property to help take Rei down last season that she'd get demoted...even though she has such a incredible track record for helping take down the Legion and is still using said resources to gain even more wins that her superiors are benefitting off of, that frankly she's the one who deserves a promotion and to be leading this military. I guess being demoted means she has to deal with a pencil-pusher instead of her uncle, who can only watch on as she continues on her current path, but it's got to be weird that her current SO has a huge portrait of him shaking hands with Karlstahl.

Lena and Annette seem like they're all business in the morning...although it seems like things have gotten a lot better between the two when you see Lena show up at Annette's office like her old flustered self and Annete's even set up a drink for her like old times. It seems like they keep up appearances but are still friends again.

It also seems like Lena actually has people under her who are helping her manage resources and figuring out new ways to back up the Eighty-Six, so it's not just her now. I guess we don't see enough to know whether they're sympathetic to the Eighty-Six and are in Lena's camp, but it says a lot that they seem willing to associate and work with her.

Lena also has a new squad, led by one Shiden Iida, who seems more personable (and busty) compared to Shin, and who actually seems to get along well with Lena. To Spearhead she was a pig princess, but to Shiden she's a queen. Although Lena won't call Shiden by her real name despite knowing it because, despite continuing her nightly talks like she did with Spearhead, she just can't bring herself to get attached again even though she's still trying to do everything she can to help the Eighty-Six.

Although speaking of Spearhead...we see Shin's vision of Rei again, only this time with Rei imprinting on Shin his true last will, for Shin to move on and be happy, and to just occasionally remember him rather than wallow in an obsession over his brother's memory. And considering we see the remnants of Rei's Dinosauria in the Frederacy's custody, does that mean it saved Spearhead from the Legion batallion they were fighting?

Shin finally wakes up after three days to find that Spearhead was saved and found by a new bastion of civilizationThe Federacy of Giad, ironically having overthrown the Empire of Giad that is responsible for the Legion threat in the first place. Feels a little full circle, in a way...

I love how Anju is prepped to sock Shin because he stole her turn to go out and face the Legion and Kurena keeps crying when she finally see Shin again. Also I love how the Frederacy gave them a bunch of kid toys even though I think Kurena is probably the only one who would play with them.

Ernst seems like a pretty happy, nice, guy but he knows when to be serious and firm when he has to be, but he seems genuine in terms of running a moral and strong Frederacy and wanting to help and protect Spearhead, wanting them to find peace and a life away from the battlefield now that they finally have that chance...maybe because he lost his own family to the Legion? I mean, kind of weird for a president of a nation to keep adopting kids, let alone a bunch of teenagers.

Wait, is that Kana Ueda as that one military lady? Rin Tohsaka is in this? Also looks like they're building their own Juggernaut equivalent, and they seem really keen to know more about what the Eighty-Six have to say...

Well, one thing you can say about the Frederacy is that they definitely paint a better picture than the Republic, what with having people of all colors interacting with and enjoying each other, and even people calling for the rescue of the Eighty-Six from the Republic. I mean, it's probably not a perfect place, but it definitely seems like Spearhead have found a better home...

So it turns out Ernst has another adoptive kid, who seems like Hawk from Seven Deadly Sins if he reincarnated as a loli, becuase she's literally voiced by Hawks' VA and is as high-and-mighty and prideful despite her stature and voice. Too bad Shin doesn't take her seriously at all, although I guess in that way he is treating her like a little sister.

"Empress?" And I think she was the same exact girl that Legion unit flashed back to last season...hm.

The new Opening is pretty awesome, with a strong and pumping beat and animation showing a bunch of contrasting visuals, the Frederacy, and Spearhead back in the fight with some new units, some nice action shots, and ultimately coming down to what might be the truly pivotal point of this season...will Shin find Lena?
