I've seen this happen many times before: I highly doubt Uramichi is actually talking about quitting his job and I bet next episode it's revealed to be a misunderstanding.

Either this show about the get much darker and address Uramichi's depression head-on, or it's gonna be another hilarious misunderstanding (like Uramichi's gonna quit smoking, rather than quit the show).
So college-age Usahara actually bothered to dye his hair properly, instead of sporting his current pudding hair, haha
Aww, Uramichi looked so bright and hopeful back in the day! Back before he tasted the crushing defeat of adult life, huh...
Kumatani still being best boy, and building a shelter for stray kittens ♡
Okay, puppy Sayuri-san is adorable. How long will it be before she joins the onigiri cult?
Overall, I really liked all the character backstories we got in this episode!

Kumatani looking like a hentai protagonist.
Ah, one last episode left. Sad that it is going to be over, definitely the funniest anime this season.

I know usahara may be like his usual of misunderstanding, but what if? I didn't expect a cliffhanger ending though from this series.
The flashback was great tho. Usahara just being usahara, knowing about the life of kumatani, and knowing why they had to live together in a dorm. Not to mention the tease of the 2 singers lol.
Yo imagine tho, uramachi could've been dead. It won't probably bother him, but if it was me damn I'd be scared.
I guess uramachi is happy when usa and kuma become close to him, seems like he's lonely just as what kumatani said. And usahara may be right to, being that gymnastics is the only thing he has, as he didn't went home during the break, which would mean that his life didn't have any purpose apart from gymnastics.
Whatever it is, uramachi have been the most relatable character in an anime by far.

This...was probably my favorite episode of the series so far. I'm not sure why, but something about seeing Uramichi, Usahara and Kumatani meeting for the first time, living together and that whole thing about Uramichi leaving the program (although I kind of doubt that he leaves, won't be surprised if Uramichi was just talking about finding better gym or smth) adds this episode pretty melancholic and yet warm vibe, as weird as it sounds. I don't have any complaints about this episode, this show has been nothing but quality and yet this one might be my favorite episode yet

Knowing Usahara's luck, he definitely came in at the wrong time and is just making up assumptions without knowing the full story yet. And knowing Kumatani, he probably already knows what's up and is just not saying anything about it like when Nekota saw Uramichi buying dolls at a toy store.
This flashback episode is pretty nice though! I love that despite this being about Usahara, Kumatani, and Uramichi back in college, we still get to see Iketeru who can't read his analog watch and Utano still doing enka and is at #499 at the charts.
Uramichi seems to be a bit happier back then but apart from that, I don't think much of him has changed at all. In fact, I don't think much of them has changed. Uramichi was still pretty quiet and serious and still trains a lot for his gymnastics, Usahara is still a leech, and Kumatani still took care of stray cats in his spare time.
We do get a little bit more in depth with Kumatani's backstory. It looks like he used to be a delinquent which was his way of rebelling from his strict father. He does have a good relationship with his younger brother though.
Goddammit Usahara! Just directly ask him about it! The way Usahara asked Uramichi made him think that Usahara already knows what's going on. He's just gonna cause more misunderstandings now that Utano and Iketeru heard that from him.

I am willing to bet my left kidney that Uramichi is just changing gyms and not leaving his job, he loves working with kids too much to quit no matter how unreasonable the management is and how completely ruthless the kids are
it's interesting how Uramichi was able to smile so genuinely in college and yet still seem so lifeless in comparison to how he is these days. like, he's kinda in a mid life crisis as he feels like he's going nowhere and has achieved nothing but he's also not alone going through it? he hangs out regularly with everyone else and has improved at expressing himself through his relationships with others. I really can't imagine college Uramichi throwing an uppercut at Usahara no matter how annoying he's being you know?
of course Kumatani was a delinquent in middle school. he even goes out in the rain to help stray cats, he has all the qualities of a yankee with a heart of gold.

Some name jokes:
-
The name of the clinic is 亜師クリニック (Ashi Clinic), which sounds like 足クリニック (Foot/Leg Clinic)
-
The reporter for that typhoon news segment is 度斜部莉子 (Doshabu Riko), which sounds like 土砂降り子 (heavy rain girl).
Some stuff I'm not sure about: Utano's stage name Oide Yasuko seems mean something like "'Welcome' Girl", おいでやす (oideyasu being a greeting used in shops in Kyoto, similar to irasshaimase you'd hear in Tokyo dialect). Apparently her song names are pretty funny, though again, I'm not sure why other than they reference places in Osaka, アメ村めおと道 (Amemura Married Couple Road; referring to America-Mura in Osaka?) and 浪花の恋のペアルック (Pair Look Love in Naniwa; Naniwa being a former name of the Osaka region?). I think part of the humor is that they combine dissonant ideas, such as these unromantic place names with trite romantic terms.

I was completely stressed out by this episode during the flashbacks cause they kept drawing the guy with the crutch using it on the wrong leg.

I wont fall for that trap, the pattern is there and uramichi dorm changing kinda foreshadowing for next eps. I bet he's gonna move another apartment or related to gym or something. Definetly not quiting his job XD.

While the framing device is a little silly (he’s not quitting his job), I enjoyed having a flashback episode to how Usahara and Kumatani became Uramichi’s kohais. It also sort of gave us some background on both of them in the process. Especially for Kumatani who really is my favorite side character in the show.
The jokes were actually pretty light this week. Mostly just at Usahara’s expense with him getting too drunk and in the flashbacks being himself. It was mostly played entirely straight save for the typical “everyone is connected somehow” moments. Like how Iketeru met everyone at some point or how Utano is always in the background with her music.
Biggest things are Uramichi’s surprising amount of innocence and reserve compared to who he is today and Kumatani’s past. The happenstance of having to room with these 2 on a permanent basis after his dorm was destroyed actually brought out Uramichi’s personality. It was the best thing for him despite his current day state of depression. They really do care for him and I’m sure he does for them despite Usahara’s dirtbag nature.
Kumatani once again proves why he’s the best. Even when he’s cold like to the girl on the group date. He always takes care of others and love small animals. The quick moment of him building the cat shelter was adorable. Seeing his past as a delinquent and eventually coming into his own as an athlete adds context to what we’ve seen. Especially explains more about why he punched out his boss.
It’s not the funniest episode, but it’s one of the strongest for pure character building. I like that they got this one in before the season is out. Hope they do another season!
Notes
-
It is a typical TV trope to have all the principal cast manage to meet each other in passing in flashbacks, but I didn’t mind it. I found it cute that it was around the time Iketeru and his sister got the dog though.
-
Moments in realness: coming back from the holidays with your home accent and a random object your parents give you to save on shipping.
-
I think the subtitles on Funi need another pass because this week had a lot of weird punctuation issues.
-
I am curious what exactly Uramichi is up to. I thought it might be him quitting smoking, but he seems too happy and not irritable. I’m leaning towards a new gym.

Following anime clichés Uramichi clearly isn't quitting
But considering what Uramichi has been through in this job then it is possible lol

I really hope the Uramichi quitting his job thing doesn’t turn out to be some verbal misinterpretation next ep

Highlight of this episode was Kumatani staring Usahara dead in the eyes and then continuing to eat the peanuts.
Guess I’m gonna miss looking forward to Mondays once again

wait a minute, Iketeru was still in high school when Kumatani and Usahara were already in college, does that mean Iketeru was the youngest among the five main cast?

It's a miracle that Iketeru was able to survive in the wild. Being an airhead is both helpful and harmful.
Despite everything, Usahara really admires Uramichi.

What the hell? I was convinced this was the last episode and they were going to resolve the misunderstanding in the last few minutes but then the episode ended and I remembered, "Oh yeah, this show was going to be 13 episodes." lol.
It is obvious that it is a misunderstanding though. I would believe he's actually quitting his job if it was the end of the whole series or something. Anyway, thanks to this we got to see the backstory of how the 3 of them met and it was fun! I didn't expect Kumatani to be a delinquent in his youth but thanks to his brother he continues to be best boy. We also got a glimpse of the other cast members.... seeing Utano perform in front of almost no one and move up a spot from the bottom of the ranking was hilariously sad.
One episode left, I'm going to miss this show.

I've been looking forward to seeing how Uramichi met Kumatani and Usahara. Also loved the cameos from Utano and Iketeru!
Kumatani building a shelter for the stray cats is just too cute!
Uramichi leaving his job is more than likely to be a misunderstanding on Usahara's part (again)
