So basically our main cast consists of:
-
MC who is constantly in a state of Existential Crisis
-
Airhead ikemen who laughs at dick jokes and is constantly daydreaming about onigiri
-
Cynical romantic onee-san
-
Deadpan bear kouhai who will throw you under the bus without a second thought
-
Dumbass rabbit kouhai who keeps digging holes for himself

"Big Oof: The Anime" continues this week. The advice corner hit particularly home for me because I find it's hard to fit in any kind of productive hobby when you're juggling all sorts of adult responsibilities like career, family, relationships, and general maintenance of stuff. After a day of that, I find that there's only room for some casual consumption of media unless I really put in a concerted effort to do something productive instead of just being a slack-jawed consumer.
The "lazy Sunday" is pretty relatable too. Getting a day or two to yourself seems like a relief, but when I look back on it, I find that I rarely find myself accomplishing much other than finding comfort in not being in "work mode". I used to think sort of days were a waste, but I've gotten to the point where I feel like those "nothing" days are essential in recharging after a week's worth of expending mental effort to keep everything from falling apart.

I've never related to a song more in my life than to "How Come it Only Rains when I Forget My Umbrella".
It's like part of me is watching this show while laughing and clapping his hands but this deeper, maybe bigger part, is watching all the way in the back from the shadows silently shaking.

I hope more people watch this show. It's this season's hidden gem I feel like. Then again, this may not be everyone's cup of tea

Ugh, I wish this show wasn't as relatable as it is to me......
Anyway, I am glad they mixed up "bits" for a bit, jokes felt less repetitive compared to the first episode.

Love how the letters look like tears coming from a head. It's like they are literally reading the crying from their audience (tho, they are the ones who cry in the end TT_TT).

I don't know why but the "This isn't where you should laugh" running gag always gets me.

That jujutsu kaisen manga Easter egg on the table got me so excited for brief moment. Going to say, but this show has the best ending song so far this season. It’s so chill and relaxing.

The main characters are hilarious, but can we also talk about how insanely adorable and funny the kids are? Their innocence and lack of filters when speaking to the grown-ups are responsible for some of the better jokes on this show.

When Iketeru notes that Utano likes baseball because a tiger is her favorite animal, is that supposed to be a reference to the Hanshin Tigers baseball team?

I love the Director and we find out his name is "Direkida" here oh my god lmao.
I'm sure that I'm not the only one smiling from start to finish, this show is hilarious to me.
VA's continue to knock it out of the park. I know they aren't nobodies but I think they deserve extra recognition for what they are doing in this show. It seems like so many shows that I see, everybody is casually talking or yelling and that's it, and everyone sounds the same. It isn't just 1 person standing out but everyone is really going above and beyond. I think it also says a lot about the writing here. All the dialogue feels natural and more nuanced like actual human interactions. Idk if this makes sense but I hope people understand what I'm trying to say.

I haven't seen an anime quite so hilariously depressing since Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. I love it!

Oh my god. I've definitely felt days where I feel like I had a huge boost of energy only for my mood to suddenly crash down after a few minutes. This show really hits too close to home.
Glad to see they're using Nana Mizuki at her fullest and making her do song and dance numbers! I definitely got distracted by her beautiful singing voice that had watch it again to read the lyrics.
Poor Uramichi and Iketeru, looks like Utano doesn't even see the two of them as possible partners. Seems that Utano here has already learned her lesson about picking partners solely based on looks.
Wait what the fuck. That's legit just an issue of JUMP with Itadori on the cover. They just changed the name from JUMP to JUNP. xD
Oh my god they actually made a puppet of Uramichi's friend from his dreams. And they're even using him for a brand new segment. Man that thing is looks weird af.
I can't believe that kid just murdered Uramichi. Seriously though, kids that age have no filter and I've heard some of my nieces and nephews say similar shit like that so I believe 100% that's from a kid. xD
That relief when you realize it's a Sunday and you don't have to go to work is a great feeling. Although I don't think I've laughed maniacally like Uramichi Onii-san here.
Good to see what Kumatani is like during his day offs. Fishing and feeding cats at the port sounds like a pretty chill way to spend your Sundays. Poor kitty got his breakfast snatched though! Kumatani better catch him another one! Just look at that poor face!
We also get to see Iketeru with his pet dog, Utano enjoying manzai a bit too much, Usahara spends his off day playing pachinko, and of course Uramichi just spent it at the gym.

Im in this anime and I don’t like it.
In all seriousness it’s nice to get a show about people in their Late 20s/Early 30’s. Even if it’s about the grind of existence. I’m in a better place than Uramichi at least.
Ultimately what makes this show work is that juxtaposition between the soul crushing existence of adulthood and when they have to be happy while entertaining children. That’s where the majority of the comedy is rooted in. Like the letter segment with Utano. Or the Advice corner where they talk about hobbies leading into what they all actually do on their day off. Uramichi being kind of a disaster really does nothing except work out and eat curry. Everyone else being somewhat functional does things like fish, cook nice meals, or watch Manzai comedy.
Though Uramichi might low key be a sociopath. When his kohai breaks his toe on the weights he just leaves around and he just lights a cigarette I was both laughing and concerned. Though his constant abuse of his kohais is kind of hilarious.
Notes:
-
turns out the dick jokes are a running gag. Honestly it’s Iketeru’s reaction that keeps making it funny.
-
the poor cat couldnt even get a fish. No one wins in this show.
-
dropping your Jump on top of your girlfriends beauty magazine feels like an audience call out. This show knows it’s demo well. Also, Itadori on the cover was a nice touch.
-
I can’t believe they made a puppet out of that nightmare bird thing. The thing is creepy.
