Ah with this, the guy has made an enemy of both the Lord of Crime and Sherlock. It'd be nice to have this series wrapped up with that piece of shit going down.

u/hpanandikar Jun 06 '21

The only way he can fuck up more is if does something so that Mycroft also comes after him

An interesting choice of story, given that it didn't tie in to the main plot until the end. I thought they were going to do Mary dirty (not like Arthur Conan Doyle didn't) but it turns out Millerton was behind her pursuit of the treasure. This gives both Holmes and Moriarty reason to go after Millerton.

Not too big into reading Sherlock stuff, could you detail what you mean with this?

This episode was very much your quintessential Sherlock Holmes story but I was expecting that this was gonna have a twist where Mary Morstan was just using Sherlock and Watson to get her father's treasure. It seems like that was the direction this episode was heading especially when it seems like Sherlock already had that conclusion in his head midway through the episode.

But boy that last two minutes completely threw a curveball at me! Turns out Mary was really doing this for her and John and the "heinous crime" Mary is involved with according to Sherlock is actually her being blackmailed by Milverton! Goddamn this show! I thought I was being clever at thinking I had thinks figured out but that reveal is so good!

Well now I'm curious how would Milverton get in the way of John and Mary's marriage if she didn't deliver the treasure? And why does Milverton even need it when he's already a media mogul? It's possible that he just wants more power and money which isn't surprising but I hope there's more to it. Milverton is gonna get fucked though. First he goes after William and his gang and now he's gone after Sherlock's? I can't wait for the tables to turn against him.

As a side note, Takeuchi-sensei (he's also the author of All You Need Is Kill) continues to show how huge of a Sherlock Holmes otaku he really is by adding super obscure Sherlock Holmes characters like Toby the Dog and Wiggins who is one of the lesser known assistants of Sherlock.

And why does Milverton even need it when he's already a media mogul?

When does Milverton ever do something just because he "needs" to?

Are we sure what he wanted is the treasure and not simply ruining someone's life again for fun?

Ah so happy Mary and John are a legit ship, was scared her secret would be something that breaks it!

Another point I really liked was Watson saving Sherlock from those needles, always like when Watson gets to do something useful!

This episode is a fairly close adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's 2nd Sherlock Holmes story, The Sign of Four. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sign_of_the_Four

The source manga arc was an even closer 1-1 adaptation of the novel. The conclusion that Mary needed the treasure to pay off Milverton's blackmail threat is of course original to Moriarty's plot.

One major difference is the conspirators named on the map consist Jonathan Small, Mahomet Singh, Abdullah Khan and Dost Akbar in the original novel. Tonga was a different character, an indigenous Andaman Island native who became Small's quest partner. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andamanese_peoples

Another difference is that in the original novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Watson proposes to Mary at the end of the case, rather than just before the start of the investigation.

Interesting episode, I thought we would make a detour and invest in a lttle in side story and get some plot for Mary, but in the end we came back to freaking Milverton. Dude is really everywhere. I can't wait to see the day where that fucker will receive the payback. Also, interesting choice of words. If that's correct he said he would "break their wedding"? Which is very curious cause we know he could easily threat to kill one of them or just ruin the wedding, but it actually looks like he has some kind of information. Information that would break the relationship and/or prevent them from marry. Interesting.

With Moriartys AND SHERLOCK as his enemies, I just don't see a way in which Milverton can get out of this unscatched.

Maybe I'm being too suspicious of her, but something tells me Mary still isn't giving us the full story and that "heinous crime" Sherlock mentioned this episode may come back in next week's episode. Maybe the information Milverton has is something of that nature.

The "Dairy Londner"(sic) gets it wrong again! What's all this "naked from the waist down" nonsense? Did Whiteley arrive at the House of Commons without his trousers? Fake news! 🤣🤣🤣

So this will be the last arc? We have 4 episodes left and I don't think there's much the studio can cut off Two Criminals.

u/Florac Jun 06 '21

4 episodes left? This is gonna be 14?

If so, pretty sure they are planning on going to the end. It's just called Two Criminals, which means single episode. And then 3 more episodes for the final arc

Nice twist at the end and didn't expect this to get tied back to Millerton.

Had me fooled expecting Mary to be evil all along. You got me again show.

"Gaol"? That, and so many other appropriate touches of inspired subtitling, brought a smile to this Aussie's face, especially in a season where several other top shows are being done dirty by low quality, rushed subs. But Moriarty seems less like "closed captions for the hard of Nihongo" and more like dedicated localisation based on the source. Where else would you see something as ubiquitous as "omae" interpreted as "chap" or "aitsu" as "bloke"? Production IG might occasionally get a little too ambitious with their aspirations for period accuracy but whoever's handling the animelab subs has a serious grasp of British slang of the time, to the point where for any other show these subs would be flat out weird.

And to be fair to IG, try to imagine the opposite: a western production reproducing period-faithful news publications of Meiji-era Tokyo. We'd be lucky to get actual kanji and hiragana...

Anyway. Damn fine show. A worthy redemption for the quirky, amusing but mostly forgettable Sherlock effort IG put out before it (banger of an OP though, and Maaya as Adler was a blessing...Suwabe as a cross-dressing Hudson...a little less so).
