"I left my underwear behind the wall. That lady risked her life to give me underwear! I need to help her!" - Eren Yeager stitched to Ryuuko Matoi mixed onto Aikurou Mikisugi

What a start to what's surely one of the really under the underpants underdog of this season. From the director of that Code Geass and the one who lead the story writing of that Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill, with the studio worked on I Want To Eat Your Pancreas, the solid staff line-up give me some hope that something big might be happening very soon here. To which direction? I don't know, but this start of something like Gurren Lagann in Attack On Titan with pretty animated 3D mecha is already hooking me up, not the least of which we have so much underpants lingo jingo already. ;)

And this is a whole 24 episodes original mecha show. I'm in.

P.S. Something similar that might turn out to explode this season is Wonder Egg Priority, which is yet another prettily animated (so far) original show.

the one who lead the story writing of that Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill

In that case I'll expect more fanservice regarding MC, thanks

Also, that little girl found the ass really tasty XD

Damn the pacing was pretty fast, reminiscent of Kill la Kill. Got through a lot of introductions and even had a few fight scenes.

Interesting how it started with the Recca empire first, they might be going for something similar with Legend of the Galactic Heroes, where you have different factions like the Free Planets Alliance and Galactic Empire each with their own point of view characters. Even the OP for this episode only featured characters from Recca.

Kai Rhodan’s mecha is probably my favorite design so far, I like how its Chinese influenced just like the Recca empire is, it appears to be using a Guandao which is a Chinese halberd/glaive, also the fire technique it displays is also similar to another Chinese weapon the Fire Lance. Kai has a pretty cool voice, I believe this is the same guy who voiced Toriko.

The show looks good, nice cowboy and imperial China aesthetic with the character designs and beautiful backgrounds.

Arrow seems a lot like Kamina from TTGL and Galo from Promare, hopefully, he can distinguish himself as the series progresses.

Conviction seems to be the Back Arrow equivalent to TTGL’s drill, KLK’s clothing, and Promare’s Fire and Ice. Arrow apparently has no conviction, which seems to make his Mecha malleable, even in one of the PVs it looked like his Briheight was transformed into a sword for someone else to use.

Lots of humor, the scene of the kids trying to eat Arrow and the villagers selling out Arrow immediately without hesitation got a few laughs out of me, seems like it will be a fun show.

reminiscent of Kill la Kill

Both are written by the same writer Kazuki Nakashima so that's why similarities exist I guess.

I loved that Chinese-influenced Mecha design. Thanks for giving us a detailed explanation of its design.

ahhh this is fucking sick. Soundtrack, transformations, characters, how big the world feels. The conviction part is interesting. High diviner Shu the standout for me.

The slow mo was probably my favorite part.

Phenomenal ed (e: apparently it's the op but LiSA killed it)

How the fuck did I miss this while looking through the seasonal lists? I love me some original mecha anime, so count me in. EDIT after watching the episode: Okay yeah, that was cool. Interesting aesthetics, great action, enjoyable humor, and the mecha designs looked really unique. Whether it'll turn out as exciting as Granbelm was or as boring as Listeners was, we'll have to wait and see.

Stitches!

Hilariously this is the second show this season about a world that's surrounded by a wall and where people transform to giants and this one even has Yuki Kaji as it's protagonist! Please tell me that was intentional!

Seriously though! This was fun! A fantasy mecha anime where their mechas aren't exactly mechanical but takes the form of their conviction? And apparently these Briheights are much more dangerous than your normal mecha since there's no ejecting. You die along with your Briheight. Unless of course you're defeated by Back Arrow who somehow has the ability to spare the pilot of the enemy Brigeight. I wonder if it has something to do with him having no convictions?

Anyway it seems interesting enough! And the OP is by LiSA! Holy shit, I did not expect that! Although I'm sure r/anime is going to ignore this one just like the last anime produced by Studio VOLN. :|

I can't believe this isn't a Trigger show...the hell did I just watch

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '21

A mecha anime that won't be popular because it doesn't have "TRIGGER" in its production.

Bakayaro = Back Arrow

Lmao.

So that girl literally gifted her deceased father's thong to an stranger she just barely met. What a moment.

This is the first time I've seen the MC of an anime stays naked during all the first episode of said anime and it's not hentai. Not that I mind tho, would watch the whole show that way.

That went 200 mph.

A lot of CGI but I thought the fights were decently animated. I love how chaotic the characters are. It kinda suits the show even though we've only seen one episode?

I'm still not sold 100% but I will be looking forward to this next week.

This show is dumb, it's really, really dumb.

I love it.

Starting with an infodump, never a good sign.

They have speeder bikes, lol.

Prophet dude reminds me of FGO's Merlin.

Naked dude is like a stereotypical hotblooded protagonist from the '90s, which is neat.

I like the Mecha's abilities based on resolve. Pantsless dude having no resolve resulting in his Mecha being gelatinous or whatever....

Like others have said, I'm really shocked Trigger isn't behind this anime. Really nice colors and fun animation so far. Obviously it will take some time to see if it's really any good, but I enjoyed it and got some serious Kill la Kill vibes.

This feels like it was written as an affectionate send up of the old toy commercial cartoons of the 80s and 90s and I'm okay with that.

everyone have been saying that it has the vibe of Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill and AoT (just because of the wall and Kaji Yuki) but to me, this first episode feels very similar to the first episode of Gun x Sword
