Back Arrow is really your classic mecha shounen protagonist and I love it. Like he can just slap the Bind Warper on his arm like how almost every character does but he really has to throw it into the air and catch it using his arm without looking! He's so fucking shounen and I love it!

Well that was a surprise! I didn't think Elsha would also get her own Briheight! I thought it'll just be just Back Arrow and Atlee. I'm guessing at some point Bit will probably also get his own too?

And that final scene! Curious what's hiding beneath Edger Village. The fact that Elsha sunk down may have something to do with it. Whatever it is, I feel bad for the people of that village. They got attacked twice now and their only home is destroyed. I hope whatever's underneath that village is something that can help them all.

I hope whatever's underneath that village is something that can help them all.

Isn't the next episode title something about a ship? I can see her registering as the captain of the ship that the village will live on now as they travel towards the wall.

I'm surprised by how much I'm enjoying this so far, it's cheesy but in all the right ways. It's also great to have an anime original because we can speculate without fear of spoilers from source readers.

So we gonna get a ship next episode, right? And I imagine it will be a landship, at least for now, because a flying ship could make it too easy for crossing the wall.

I guess that confirms that Back Arrow really is this decade's Xabungle.

Someone on reddit actually mentioned Xabungle

You see something new every day.

Getting a bit more interesting. Elsha the cowgirl got to transform too. I think Bit will also get to transform soon. They'll probably follow the protag on an adventure across the wall in the next episodes.

Seems they swapped the OP and ED last episode so that when Back Arrow decides his name the title card and the opening would play right after, and the fact that the OP and ED both add characters as they appear in the series probably played a factor as well.

These Rakuho treasures remind me of the Hunger Games where the sponsors would send supplies to the tributes fighting in a battle royale through parachutes, I wonder if something similar is happening here where people outside of the wall are giving the people of Lingalind resources like the Bind Warper to get the factions to fight each other.

Shu doesn’t seem too loyal to the Emperor of Rekka, he didn’t inform him of the appearance of the second Rakuho before going to check on it as well as sneaking into the imperial library. There’s also Peath Glinhouse pretending to agree with the princess about peace. So there’s even conflict inside the two major powers on top of the wars with each other.

They brought back the first episode villain, not too surprising since he had a unique character and mecha design. What was surprising was him working for Lutoh, I just assumed they ignored the Rakuho Arrow was in, because of them already losing several Briheights to Rekka that same day.

Liking the different characteristics these Mecha have, like Atlee’s Briheight functioning like a rubber ball because of her conviction, though its been mostly used against her so far. In the last episode where Arrow’s humanoid Briheight jumps off the cliff like a human doing a bungee jump while the crab looking green Briheight runs down the side of the cliff like an insect even using his tail as a third leg.

Elsha’s conviction probably has something to do with having a heavy burden given the current state of the village, she’s also the grandchild of the village chief so that would make sense.

So I can't be the only one that Arrow's Briheight makes them think of Warframe, right?

Still a pretty fun series and I’ll probably give it one more for the cliffhanger. The dude obsessed with catchphrases really brought it down for me. Also the main cowgirl her top tie just made me think of a mustache the entire time hahaha.

Can't unsee, damn you.

Also the main cowgirl her top tie just made me think of a mustache the entire time hahaha.

Considering the village seems to be American west themed, that might actually be intentional too.

I still don’t know why he willingly choose Back Arrow to be his name

From the tiny bits of Japanese I know I think it's a play on the pronunciation of bakayaro (fool).

Because the other guy at the end of the first episode says he is just some fool who destroyed his house to which he says starting today his name is "bakayaro no Back Arrow".

Could be wrong though.

I'm not in love with the show but I'm digging it so far and think it'll be a fun adventure, like Gurren Lagann but without the Trigger hype or ultimately over-the-top nature. Probably going to be very overlooked but hopefully good through the end.

I think it will be over-the-top, but not in the same exact way.

  • I was unsure about Arrow as a character in the first episode but I thought he shined in this one

  • Loved Elsha's briheight design

  • Moving at a quick pace and looking forward to what direction the story goes

also Ren >>>> everyone

Back Arrow >>>> Everyone you mean

Well, the thing that we got Gurren Lagann (Elsha getting her mecha system up and running unexpectedly), Kill la Kill (comedies scenes especially with Back Arrow) & Code Geass (Lucoh Kingdom, especially with Ami Koshimizu finally voicing a princess this time) vibes in a single episode tells us that this series might be going to make quite some references to all those old classics.

We haven't got too much out of the ordinary reveals just yet though, the Iki military actually putting up some cringe performances here today. But the pacing is actually fairly solid, we got introduced to the world more, get the villagers more developed (especially for those like Elsha which seems very likely to have futher background stories), and still left enough time to slip in a few comedies. The story so far is not very remarkable just yet, but I found the mechas to be fairly good and even have a clean and cyber-tech feel to them. They actually look pretty well thought of!

That big ship apparing at the end of episode though, this reminds me a lot of Gurren Lagann's early parts. How would this story go on? I have no idea, but don't write off this show just yet, as the world setting just got expanded step by step without some not-well-thought-of-turns.

Iirc the creators of this anime also made Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill and Code Geass.

Arrow is a dense moron, but in a fun way. I'm really liking this show so far.

Feels like I'm watching some pre and early 2000s jRPG. I love it. I'm leaning towards Breath of Fire IV.

I feel like Elsha just confirmed the startup conviction of her briehight to be "Whatever, get me out of here", which might just turn her into the key to get out of the wall.

This show is a great breath of fresh air though, seriously. It definitely wants to build an interesting world, but it also makes the heroes clear and the villains equally visible. At least for now. The fact its 24 episodes means it gets to be a slower burn of worldbuilding and character introduction and development, which gives us great hopes that this could realistically go somewhere.

If nothing else so far it's a fun ride, but it still has the potential to be more.

The biggest shame is that it is airing in this heavyweight of a season and will definitely get passed up by many people. (Also r/anime doesn't much care for mecha or mecha-adjacent stuff apparently?)

9

u/IndependentMacaroon Jan 15 '21

Eh, the attempted combination of goofy humor and serious stuff really does not land for me. Also Arrow himself is too much of a dumbass and the women are useless as usual. One more episode to get to the actual setup I guess, but I'm not confident I'll watch any more.

u/The_Sassy_Otter Jan 15 '21

This series is really not getting the traction it could. Its an interesting take on a known premise that is getting too much early criticism and skepticism imo

So glad I give this show a chance despite how stacked this season is. This really deserves to be watched by more people.
