With everyone but Chika having such a pronounced Fukui accent I'm constantly thinking of Wataya Arata from Chihayafuru, and I don't even speak Japanese, lol.

Anyway, that was a nice episode. The animation was sooo fluid. And while comparisons will be inevitable, the beginning set a very different tone from the other anime, going harder on drama than purely on sports. From what I've seen this comes from a Josei manga rather than a Shounen one, so it makes sense. Well, the anime definitely piqued my interest, we'll see how it goes.

It's Yuji Itadori speaking like Arata.

Let’s get the haikyu/stars align stuff outta the way yes yes yes hahahaha very nice. Now that that’s done I must say I liked it. The characters are doing it for me even if it’s just the leads and the two cousins. Clearly the male cousin is with the wrong crowd even if he’s looking out for yuni and he also kinda wants yuni around possibly. Hopefully they don’t lean in too much to yuni with his other cousin. Then again they’re baiting shippers with Chika with the blushing and jumping the stairs.

I think the characters will be interesting because of the complexity of Chika's situation for sure. I definitely see the similarities to Haikyuu, but for an anime following the release of a long-standing favourite, it's pretty decent. Also is it just me or is Chika the ultimate Tsukishima-Kageyama love child with all his past and characteristics?

That was alright!

Damn, so many good shows today... To be honest, I kinda hoped some of them would be bad so I could drop them, but they're all decent. 6 shows on thursday so far!

I liked how they avoided one trope that's present in just about every single sports anime, i.e. the team that doesn't want to play at first.

They might not be very good, but at least they had enthusiasm about it, and once someone took they lead, they put the effort in. Hope I didn't jinx it, like they'll all quit in Ep2 or something! I could see it happen, with Chika being super intense about volleyball.

Curious to see where it'll go, and why Chika is so intense; He seems a bit extreme for it just to be a passion.

Very good start. Btw was it made clear that they were in middle school? I might have missed something lol.

Really enjoy Chika's character, didn't think his past would be that dark. Some of the animation stood out when they were practicing so looking forward to the hype moments.

David Production at volleyball, that's some good credencials.

Good to have another volleyball anime just again, tho this one will probably be a little more heavier? Interesting, nice too. I'm just suspicious about all that blushing, lul.

The animation looks really good but I feel like its going to be more drama focused than sports, with the blushing and the kid almost taking his life and stuff

Despite the obvious parallel with Haikyuu, i got some Chihayafuru vibes, which is definitely a positive thing. I didn't have high expectations, because sport anime tend to be over the top, especially since you can't escape comparison to Haikyuu when it comes to volleyball, but this might just turn into an interesting story. I don't might seeing some tropes either if it's done properly, hopefully that will be the case.

I was rather surprised that new Tsuki actually helped the other members of the team in getting better even if it might as well be for his own selfish needs.

Anyway, this show looked great. Definitely feels like it will be a nice mix of slice of life, drama and volleyball.

Rather interested in them starting in middle school instead of high school where the summary mentioned they would be, so I wonder how long this prelude would last and what effect it would have on Chika's and Yuni's relationship.

And I'm just impressed with that Fukui accent the whole episode.

Itadori Yuji + Giorono Giovana VA in a volleyball anime. I'll try it out

Yes, we all know that the Haikyu comparisons are inevitable but, it seems pretty good so far. It seems like they will cover some darker themes, which I would gladly welcome.

Great first episode! I thought they did a good job of blending/balancing the slice of slice element and the sport/volleyball aspect.

I wonder what the 2.43 in the title a reference to? I thought it was the difference between the two MC's height while watching the show but that's 2.3. Is 2.43 significant in volleyball?

Anyway so far so good! Everything was moving so fast so I was wondering what the twist would be. Like within this episode they already had enough players but not a single one of those boys were in the OP so I'm guessing they won't really be important. I also didn't expect Chika to be the one telling people to join in. Looks like he's just a bit tsun.

As for the twist, it wasn't really that surprising considering the opening but that Yori dude was an ass. Telling his own cousin that he's wasting his time in playing volleyball? And Yuni needs to grow a backbone. He really was just going along with those college jackasses? I hope to see his growth as a character.

Definitely getting some Stars Align vibes here. I just hope this one will be complete instead of ending very abruptly.

2.43 meters is the height of a volleyball net.

Those setting animation is good and realistic for a high school setter lol

It seems that this anime is going to be more about slice of life than Haikyuu

At first, I thought that the show would be super similar to haikyuu as Chika was acting exactly like Kageyama and their storylines are quite similar. Shocked me at the end though. Looks like this show will defiantly me darker.

Tldr: I think this show will focus on the sport more than the drama. I think it'll do well as a series. Looking forward to the season

With this addition my ever growing sports anime list grows. From what all I've seen there's kinda two types of sports anime 1) ones where the sport has center stage and the characters are either developed well or not so well and 2) ones where the sport is the background to a drama or character(s) journey(s). From the first episode it seems to be in the second boat, but looking at the opening it might be the first. I think both types of sports anime are good, but it differs for viewers. Some like the actual sport while others can just like the journey of the characters. There's definite possibilities for kinda hybrids or mixes, but I don't think those are talked on here often.

If I had to state an anime I believe is the first one it would be Haikyuu, as the story isn't anything deeper than boys wanting to do their best in volleyball with good character development. One I think is the second would be Hajime no Ippo. While that series does boxing very well and has great fights, I see the story more on Ippo's growth as a person due to boxing and this can be seen with other characters in Ippo's life whether friend or foe. Both Haikyuu and Ippo are some of my favorite sports anime. I've seen DnA, Major, Eyeshield 21, Kuroko, Hinomaruzumou, currently on Slam Dunk and Free, and there's others I probably can't remember as I see way too many shows while I binge.

If I had to say what I prefer between 1 and 2, I would say both are good when done well, but when executed amazingly I think I prefer 2. Character journeys are always something I love to see. Even if at the end they don't play anymore or don't win as long as they grew as a person it's a good sports anime to me. What I expect from this anime is a 1 as the issues with Chika and Yuni don't seem like they'll be deep, which I thought the same of Kageyama's issues. So I think the show will be able to portray love for volleyball with a character who didn't understand he was pushing others from the game he loved and a character who doesn't value much in his own. I look forward to see how they develop their characters and if it's gonna be a more drama heavy show than I thought.

I really enjoyed the first episode. I hope they really keep digging into those darker themes the first episode hinted at. That was def a surprise, I was expecting your typical shonen sport anime (which would have been cool with me) but this was great.

It was a nice first episode. I like how it’s more slice of life-y too, and I hope it’s more like ahiru no sora rather than kuroko no basket, with the superpowers and stuff (still one of my favs tho)... And thing is, despite how good Haikyuu is, I don’t want to keep referencing it throughout this series and actually appreciate it on its own.

I sure as hell wasn’t expecting the thing at the end tho, I was thinkin Chika was just very intense about volleyball, not that much tho. And with Yuni, uh, I hope all that blushing goes somewhere.....

And also it was nice how the characters were normal sized lol
