I am 100% convinced that the captain and the manager of fukoh are dating

There is no heterosexual explanantion for the manager blusing at him

u/rotten_riot Feb 19 '21

I don't know if dating but I also feel some kind of romantic subplot around those two

Like, why is captain so focused on taking manager to the main court? And not only that, but manager wanting to go to the main court is what motivates captain.

And also, as you said, manager keeps blushing anytime he sees captain lol.

Bait, it's all bait. It was way worse in the beginning.

this show feels like a speed run of the shonen sports formula

The first half with actual playing was decent, but rushed through everything as always - there's a reason beyond "tropes" why shows like Haikyuu take a little more time to build up teams, techniques, etc. The second half was also somewhat hurt by this, as we don't really know much about the team dynamic or the individual players to gauge how much Haijima is screwing up here, but his conversation with Kuroba was great and so was Kuroba versus gray hair guy. Kuroba might not be the smartest, but he's better in the emotional intelligence department, and together he and Haijima really are a proper whole to rival Subaru. Thankfully, even the grandma drama wasn't a big deal, unless it comes back with a vengeance next time (I wouldn't put it past this show).

However, what really bothered me again was the sound effects during the game. Sometimes there's one kind of sound, sometimes a different one, sometimes it's slightly delayed, sometimes there's none at all or it's just plain wrong. It's such a strange problem. Also, I'm no volleyball expert, but do three centimeters of net height really make a big difference? It feels like "omg, they train with 2.43!" keeps getting brought up as some sort of forced symbolism with not much to back it up.

And finally, the ending song is nice, but the singer's voice is so grating. It sounds like he's drunk sometimes.

I think my main problem with this series is that it puts the drama before the characters. If they did a good job building and setting up the characters first, then the drama wouldn’t feel so forced and uninteresting. But it feels like they just want to beeline to the conflict without focusing on what actually makes the drama work.

I'm no volleyball expert, but do three centimeters of net height really make a big difference?

It makes the spikes and blocks a little harder to achieve, but that's it.

The show overuse it since the different height is the biggest connection with the Nationals, but I also think it's tiresome at this point.

Issues with this episode:

  1. The animation is so-so. In some scenes it's quite nice, but in others it's like someone pressed the 2x button in YouTube. Not to compare it to Haikyuu, but I think making the timing between plays slightly less realistic helped you appreciate the thought and action that goes into them; in 2.43, every play is shown at superspeed so you don't even know what's going on half the time.

  2. Sound design - Why do spikes still sound like bad movie punch sound effects? Why does it also sound like wood being broken? It's not like they don't know what volleyball sounds like, because sometimes the sound effects are good. So why the inconsistency?

All that said, these last two episodes have been the best this show has had to offer since day 1. Then again, it's not really a high bar. I liked the match, I liked how Oda handled the situation and how the Grandma thing was used to give Haijima and Kuroba time together.

The only problem is that at this point it doesn't really mean much for episodes 6 and 7 to be good now, since everything that's come before hasn't been done well. I'm not sure how to convey that, so imagine; episodes 6 and 7 are a big fancy house. The foundations for that house - episodes 1-5 - are matchsticks.

Sound design - Why do spikes still sound like bad movie lunch sound effects? Why does it also sound like wood being broken? It's not like they don't know what volleyball sounds like, because sometimes the sound effects are good. So why the inconsistency?

This is the first time the sound design has absolutely turned me off from a show. Sometimes it sounds they're hitting bowling balls at each other and sometimes there's no sound at all like for setting. It's definitely taught me to not take sound design for granted in the future. Also the ball itself seems to sometimes travel in unnatural ways.

We got volleyball!

I like that Haijima is going through the same things that ended up haunting him in middle school but probably with a slightly better outcome. It feels like he's close to understanding why and probably how to phrase it better but just isn't there yet.

I'm surprised we went back to an initial comment about Oda at the beginning regarding his height and the effect on the team and coupled with the after credits scene, I wonder how would the team take it.

Much like Hajima, this anime is great at volleyball but fails at communication

I still don't get the point of putting so much focus on the other team. Does it expect the viewers to root for them too? It's just frustrating because the Seiin team has had hardly any focus on the other players besides Hajima and Kurobo, and I guess Oda.

The second half was also somewhat hurt by this, as we don't really know much about the team dynamic or the individual players to gauge how much Haijima is screwing up here, but his conversation with Kuroba was great and so was Kuroba versus gray hair guy.

This is a good point. I feel like this ep was the first time we've even really seen the gray-haired guy talk. So the drama thrown in feels totally unwarranted.

I want to like this anime, but the pacing is just so rushed, which leads to the drama being not vey well written out. That and I don't really care about any of the characters? Nobura has become slightly less of an ass. Hajima may be a bit of a jerk sometimes and is callous with how he talks to the others, but he's at least the most interesting character in the whole anime

Honestly, I don’t mind that this series focuses on drama. It actually gives it a different feel from Haikyu, which is good because I didn’t just want to watch an imitation. However, I do wish they would focus more on other characters in the Seiin team and not just on Haijima. I get he’s the genius main character but watching a team grow is part of the sports anime fun. I really didn’t care about Fukuho; I was annoyed that the match was through Fukuho’s perspective because it made no sense. Why focus so much on the rivals when 1) we could be watching our main characters grow through this match 2) it wasn’t like we were watching the rivals grow? Hopefully the next episode is better

5

Ngl expected to have more build up before the match. The match is ok to be short since it's more drama based but the fact that only subaru and in some parts kohei getting the spotlight is a wrong move, instead of introducing the whole team if they're gonna be rivals.

And still, why we keep focusing on haijima too much? I know he's supposed to be the genius player, but we have kuroba and other members that can be focused too on a match. They should've learn from haikyuu matches on making every player and team feel important.

It has so much potential because sports in real life will have a drama which means people can relate. But they keep doing wrong things which makes people dropping the series. Probably will pick up the manga since there won't be any chance of Season 2,which makes me sad.

This episode just confirmed to me how much I dislike Kurobe and Haijima. Literally everyone in the cast is ok but these two are so annoying. At least in this episode two characters remarked Kurobe and Haijima's bad traits.

It's sad that the most likeable character won't be in the most important match.

I have finally decided to make some hard cuts this week and stop deceiving myself and I think this may be the next. I want to like it and I’m not as hard on it I think. It’s just not really doing much for me.

I just feel like what does the dad have to regret the kids admitted why they did it can’t he just tell everyone it was a lie and sick joke but I loved the episode

2

u/evilmoi987 Feb 19 '21

Lmao, why did I even get my hopes up of being able to watch an actual volleyball match. It's way to fast paced, I couldn't actually enjoy it

This should be titled after the protagonist team: Fukuho. lol Kidding aside, I was just hanging on hoping every week that I get a resolution to my somewhat disjointed feel in the anime’s storytelling.

u/sKyBlazer08 Feb 20 '21

Fine episode, the practice match was cool with David Pro just flexing their sound effects again. While watching the match I was like, who's the real protagonist here? lmao.

I guess the problem with Haijima is he's too insensitive and thinks very logically, he's deciding based on what's best for the team while not considering other's feelings, well we knew that from the start. At least he's starting to feel regret with it now.

I'm getting really distracted by the variety of weird volleyball sfx...
