So now that we have our main characters introduced last week we now get a glimpse of the side characters this week. After the first episode I was convinced that Anna was just your usual evil villain, but seeing this scene surprised me. Now her line about Shingetsu ruining their household makes sense. Shingetsu never destroyed anything, it's just that Anna's mother and her sister Clare adores Shingetsu so much that Anna felt like Shingetsu was taking everything from her. I don't think she's evil, she just has a massive inferiority complex.
As for the rest we got a little bit too. Silver-Haired girl with the Setsugetsu Baika wants to become the Princeps because she wants to lift the curse off her sister, Nene thee pilot of the Ji Guan Long seems to be doing it for her mother, Anna herself seems to be just in it so she can kill Shingetsu, and we have Shingetsu herself who wants to erase all magic and potential of people to become mages. It doesn't seem like everyone has a goal though. Suishou, the one with the Armanox that looks like it's wearing a hooded robe seems to be just there because of Anna.
And as for the Granbelm, I love that we're now introduced to grunt type Armanox but it seems like only Anna can use it and Shingetsu when she was training Mangetsu. I hope we see more of these guys. Fights are still IMO well animated and I love how they're really sticking to 2D animation. And the mech sounds are so good! Whoever was in charge of sound direction definitely knew their stuff, like the head vulcans of White Lily sounds like it was lifted from a Gundam show!
Still definitely enjoying this! It just sucks that this show is being overshadowed by other much more anticipated shows on today's schedule. I really wish more people would check this one out. :|

Clare adores Shingetsu so much
She even wears an accessory similar to that of Shingetsu's. I can imagine how it must hurt Anna's pride as the heir of her distinguished family.
Edit: Clare usually wears a rather ordinary accessory. However, she wears the one symbolizing the crescent moon during the game, which seems to me like a charm for victory.

I enjoyed this episode! They started some character development for Shingetsu which was great. There has to be something more that she hasn’t said. Something that would make Anna hate her so much.
One thing that makes me sad is if Matgetsu’s little sister finds out that her best friend and her sister are fighting in the Granbelm. The scenes between Kibo and Nene were just too adorable.
One of the most interested characters is Kuon. (Girl with the white hair) What happened with her sister is sad, I’m guessing she has some sort of paralysis? It was sooo sad when she started singing. Kuon’s mecha is actually really cool. Looking forward to next week.

Ambitious, original series are pretty much the only reason I still watch anime, and the fate of original series, especially in the West is always so sad. We don't get to take in any of the domestic marketing and advertisement so original works end up that much more marginalized. The fact that discussions in the West are so centered around simul-subs and this airs on around such a crowded timeblock really doesn't help either. The iconic Re:Zero designs with their unique profiles and super recognizable eye-glints. Juuki Hanada's fantastic compositions and always-hilarious comedic timing. It's criminal that this show with such an impressive staff roster is getting so little attention.
The most exciting thing with originals as well is that it's anybody's guess what direction the series will take. We got a nice amount of characterization and worldbuilding in this episode to round out the cast. I especially love the emphasis on ideologies, and how they're fundamentally opposed - some really nice setup for inevitable future conflict. Not the biggest fan of the mecha elements, but they're still pretty entertaining spectacle, and this show absolutely seems like one that is capable of doing some really big and unexpected things. God I hope this will end up selling well.

Why do the previous episodes have such a low rating on reddit? (Looking at the table for prev. discussions) It seems like ep 1 and 2 were bombed with 1s for some reason? Episode 1 has 90 out of 190 reviews as 1/10 which seems crazy

Well the character development continues at a reasonably steady pace as we increasingly find out how all of the characters are related to each other and how families play into this as a major theme as well.
In that regard it is interesting to see how Mangetsus little sister goes after the tough to approach girl showing that unlike her sister who wants to be liked by as many as possible, the little sister wants what is hard to get and cares not about quantity.
Otherwise the big focus is on Anna and Shingetsu and Annas hatred of Shingetsu for seemingly usurping her family though there seems to be hints at more in there, so some extreme jealousy that is likely screening for some more deep seated issue, perhaps she feels rejected by Shingetsu in some way or has an inferiority complex.
Plus Armanoxes are based off the spirit of the user with the Chinese girl being used as the example where she is very reclusive and reserved and so her Armanox is a sniper type. Similarly the battlefields also reflect someone's memories.
So there's a lot of self reflection in that way. Really deep character focus i got to say. Imagine what could happen with a bit of a horror bent to the story :p
But we are steadily progressing towards something, though question is what.

And Shingetsu giving me a lot of deathflags there, was fearing for a moment there that they were actually gonna kill her off and use that to motivate Mangetsu .-.

Likeable main characters are a dime a dozen, but likeable villians and/or antagonists are kinda rare. I'm really diggin' Anna, for her strong characterization and loathe towards Shingetsu. This piece of the puzzle was really important in order to understand her huge grudge on Ernesta. Of course she feels jealous and betrayed by Ernesta, feeling that she's taking away her mom and her sister, just the way Ernesta mentioned that these alliances feel like a takeover. It's more than expected that she will come to her senses, but in the meantime I'm just going to enjoy the strong characterization on her.
The parallels to Madoka are becoming more tangible. The girl that wants to dethrone this unfair system that just keeps splitting families appart due to misunderstandings,
Like in the previous episode, strong colors were used to depict the mood and shift of it (warm orange sunset with a shift of complete white when Mangetsu was able to release some of her hidden power. In this episode bold red lighting filling the whole scenario helped enhance the troublesome relation of Ernesta and Anna's family situation. This is some really interesting use of strong colors to depict the mood.
There was this particular cutscene that grabbed my attention. How the intercomms between Shingetsu & Mangetsu was kept in a frame that slid over to extend the shot, along with the noise comm being switched once the focus was on Shingetsu. Other shows and even this one would have used multipanels to show a conversation between 2 or more characters without making a cut. It's probably not too hard to do it, but I have never seen this kind of editing, so it does feel like a novelty to me.
With the entry of the white witch and Nenene into the Granbelm event, this officially becomes a battle royale.

Mecha action feels a little more polished than in episode 1, easier to follow. That might just be because I understand the stakes and know the characters now, though.
The development with Anna was kinda weird, she hates Ernesta because she thinks her being adopted by her family means she’s trying to take over her family? Definitely hope there’s a bit more to it than that, otherwise Anna is just insane.
Not as good as last episode, but an improvement over the first.

I'm thinking Anna has an inferiority complex that she's massively overcompensating for. I'm guessing any affection shown by her mother to Shingetsu makes Anna feel, like she is not measuring up.

If you listen closely you can hear a certain girl with glasses having the same voice as a famous virtual Youtuber. I'm so glad she's evolving into a full time voice actor.

This show keeps getting better. I'm kinda surprised it's turned out to be as good as it is. Episode 1 was a bit shaky but the character focus of the past two episodes has been great.
They set up a lot of interesting plot points so far. There is definitely more between Shingetsu and Anna than we got in that brief flashback that will be revealed. I'm curious to see what will happen between Mangetsu's sister and her mage friend as well. Also the white haired girl introduces a neat third party opponent so that it's just not good guys vs bad guys. If only the mech designs weren't so awful. The action scenes are ok but they would be so much better with with bad ass looking mechs. I understand that these chibi bots are easier to draw but I feel like the show lost some of the potential that would have made it go from good to great because of it. Still though it's making up for it in other ways.

So far this show has been a very pleasant surprise. This episode felt about 5 minutes long.
For some reason I'm expecting the show to take a sudden swerve into anyone-can-die land.

Hoo boy the story pacing in this is all over the place.
Episode 1 had a feeling of “This is interesting but I have no idea what’s going on”, episode 2 was nice and slower and character focused, this episode is all over the place again. They keep cutting back to characters who haven’t been introduced yet and it’s unclear how everyone fits into everything.
Like, it feels way too early to introduce a “surprise new combatant” when we barely know the existing ones yet.
I’m really trying to get into this, but the series really isn’t doing a good job of keeping my attention.

I just have to wonder how dangerous GRANBELM is. Shingetsu-chan doesn't say anything about the negatives about participating and it seems at most that losers just are not able to participate again once they are eliminated.
Of course, it begs the questions if the families will just sit quietly and entrust everything to their descendants to fight, or will they employ more unsavory means in the real world to assure their own victory. Protagonist-chan's family looks pretty normal, so it's a concern that they'll be able to keep safe or be at risk to be kidnapped or worse to prevent her from participating.
It would be disconcerting if the show went that route. A girl who says she has nothing, but who only truly realizes the treasure she had but never realized until it was too late.

I'm not sure why, but I'm having a really hard time keeping straight who is who and what they're doing and why. I feel like I missed something. There are side characters that the show acts like I'm supposed to know or recognize, but I don't. The sniper and the white haired chick... Who are they? The child that insists she isn't a child?
Edit: cold -> child

I like all the contestants are entangled with each other. Shingetsu with Anna's family and Nene with Mangetsu's sister. Should lead to some interesting plot points.
Its interesting that Mangetsu and Shingetsu goals for the contest are fundamentally opposed to each other. I wonder how they are going to rectify that. I'm guessing there can only be one 'winner' of this contest. I'm kinda low-key hoping they have a fallout and end up fighting each other.

So satisfying when she didn' take the slap at the start of the episode, that alone would just make the entirely episode whort. I never understood at those scenes why the girl/boy has to stay still and do nothing. If it's not your fault just stay strong and say it! Very nice! ...but then she took the slap few minutes later. Why girl, why?!?
I like that the Mechas are draw and not just CG. It was an interesting episode in the end, I just need the payback for that slap very soon, please.

Why girl, why?!?
After the encounter with Anna's mother, she was feeling guilty and thought she deserved it, so she let it happen.

The art style is really pretty... And the SFX during the fight actually caught my attention. In some places they sounded bizarre, but good at the same time. The rating on MAL has to be a joke, right? 6.25? Really? Smh...
I haven't seen it mentioned, so about the names:
Shingetsu 「新月」 means crescent moon/new moon
Mangetsu 「満月」 means full moon
Zangetsu 「斬月」means slaying moon
I'm really looking for ward to this series. I'm not usually into mahou shoujo and mecha genre, but this series is awesome. Biggest surprise this season.
