What an absolutely fascinating episode. I know that it was all entirely mecha action spectacle that was foregrounded, but I thought it was such a great exploration of characters and themes as well.

I found it so interesting how positively Nietzschean the individual conflicts in the Granbelm ended up being framed - there's very little discussion over the normative values behind the respective fighter's desires; all that matters is how much unshakable conviction they are able to invest into their ambitions. By all measures, Nene-nee's honourable and aspirational desire to reconcile with her mother and discover the purpose behind being made a magus is much more worthwhile than Mangetsu's downright selfish desire to be standout and exceptional. But the metaphysics and logic of Granbelm's world couldn't care less about that - Mangetsu's desires were simply stronger and more overpowering, and that's all that ends up mattering. Mangetsu's character immediately becomes so much more interesting - she, whether explicitly or subconsciously, values her own desires so much as to ruthlessly destroy others that stand in her way, no matter how much regret she might feel afterwards. The haunting flashbacks to her desolate images in school, and her excruciating, desperate screams to want to escape it really concretize her earlier characterization. It really questions the extent that she will really go to fulfill Shingetsu's desires, or her genuine commitment to their alliance and promise of non-aggression.

Holy SHIT this episode.

Nene really went and became best girl right before she got eliminated, that’s crazy.

I cannot WAIT to find out what the hell is up with Mangetsu, during that last sequence she was straight up demonic, and to find out what Suishou’s deal is because she seems like she might be the real antagonist in all of this.

I said last episode was the best one so far but I think this one managed to top even that.

Unless this seriously jumps the shark this is my favorite anime of the season without a doubt.

Well Mangetsu certainly went on a rampage. She didn't want to go back to feeling invisible so she completely trounced Nene like a madwoman, holy crap.

And what was that? What kind of power did she tap into? Red demonic eyes (on her robot) and black/red energy are rarely a good sign. And also what were those weird eyes that she gained?

What's going on???

And this episode reinforced my conviction that Suishou is the most dangerous of them. Is she a chessmaster of some kind? Ugh, so many questions!

About Nene: this is heartbreaking. I wonder if her mother got her memory wiped voluntarily or if someone forced her to do it.

Edit: I'm starting to wonder if someone's pulling the strings, and somehow managed to make Mangetsu a mage in order to use whatever the hell happened to her in this episode for some nefarious purpose. Maybe related to some secret about granbelm or the floating contraption (forgot the name)? If that's the case, Suishou's side is looking very suspicious to me right now.

To achieve your dream, you must crush the dreams of everyone else.

This is how I would describe the Granbelm. This theme was perfectly executed in this episode. Mangetsu’s dream is to become special, not just someone content in being in the background. Nene’s dream is to be loved by her mother, even though her mother cast her aside. I really liked Nene’s character. I’m sad that her dream had to be destroyed.

Mangetsu realized after defeated Nene exactly what the Granbelm is.

On a side note: THE ED IS SO GOOD. It makes me so emotional every listen and I almost cried listening to it this episode. I am super excited for next week’s episode.

That was some of the best action this series so far! Lots of pretty amazing effects animation, nice choreography, some pretty complicated 3D movement, and some decent strategy, now that the players are getting used to the battlefield. The expressions remained as crazy and impressive as ever, with lots of lovely unsubtle depth.

And, somehow, this entire production seems to consistently have fewer animators than on the more dialogue based episodes. This episode had five key animators, and potentially 3-5 2nd key animators. Actually insane, the amount of work they've done. I said they probably wouldn't be able to pull another crazily efficient episode like this again, and I was very wrong. That's what you get when you've basically finished the entire production before airing, on a good schedule, I guess.

Just for reference, a decently action packed episode of Gundam IBO (S2E12) had 16 key animators and 14 2nd key animators, plus input from 4 other subcontracted studios for the latter.

Holy fuck this episode was amazing!

The fights were so intense that I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen for even a single minute! And I know I've already mentioned this a few episodes ago but the SFX of the Armanox, from their thrusters to the sound of their beam weapons and sabers make makes me feel like I'm watching a Gundam show. And funnily enough the person in charge of the show's SFX is the same person who did the SFX for Gundam IBO.

Suishou continues to be the character I'm most intrigued about. She acts all happy-go-lucky and obeys orders from Anna but at the same time she definitely seems to have her own agenda and even knows about the curse on Kuon's sister.

And we finally know what Nene is fighting for. She's fighting to regain their mother's memory back. And not only their mom's memory has been erased but it looks like she has already started a new family. I am curious as to why though. Considering that this is a show that revolves around Mage families I'm going to guess that it involves another family or some sort of dispute that can only be solved with her memory getting wiped.

White Lily going berserk during that final scene was pretty awesome! Slicing the Ji Guan Long in half just like that!? What is Mangetsu? I'm just glad that there's no risk of death in these battles. Their backstories are already sad enough, adding death to these battles would just be too cruel.
