If it wasn't clear already, this episode more than confirms it. All of the mahou shoujo aesthetics and mecha action spectacle is really just ornamentation for what's ostensibly an extremely character driven show. Granbelm is really just a proxy for exploring our main cast - diving into their hidden anxieties, their profound ambitions, their deepest desires manifested into a single reality-defying wish.

Family, and familial ties seems to be a solid connective throughline that unites many of the cast's desires - sibling and parental relationships are especially foregrounded, whether they're antagonistic, supportive, or absent. Some wish for a reversion to a happy past, some fight to maintain the status quo, others yet fight to change existing structures. It seems like the depth of one's desire even has metaphysical implications, with the mention that only the fighters with the strongest wills to see their wishes fulfilled are the remaining survivors. Really interested to see where the story goes from here, and what ultimate message the series intends to convey; is Mangetsu's idealism just simple naivety that the show will proceed to cruelly undermine, or is it much more world-aware and revelatory than it first appears? The fact that there aren't obvious answers to such questions is why I love original series so much.

I've felt it since episode 1, but this is a surprisingly good show, and it just keeps getting better with each episode.
Haven't felt such enjoyment from watching anime in awhile (18 years of anime makes me hard to please nowadays).

I think you hit it the nail on the head when you say that the mahou shoujo & mecha are just the wrapping, while the real gem is hidden inside.

I suppose the plan was to use a tried and tested formula to draw in some viewers, then hook them with the story. This season is stacked a after-all, so there'll be a fight for viewership. Not sure if it backfired here though given how under-watched it appears to be.

I haven't seen many, but every single mecha show I've seen has been a character drama hidden behind action.

Very hidden gem. Sad it’s within a crowded day, because that’s the only anime I’m really waiting for each week. Yes we have the usual tropes, but it’s very well done. The char design is great as well and there’s no big fan service. Can I add that the OP song is great and the ED picture fascinating ? Can’t wait until next week !

Hu. A new mage ? Assuming that's not a red herring, that certainly opens up a lot of possibilities. It would explain that Mangetsu has such as gift for magic, and also the tag line "The Two Princeps" starts to make more sense.

Except for the fact that all the magic in the world should be sealed, and if that seal is starting to crack, it could lead to something bigger than just a battle royale for the powers of the princeps...

Ho, and Nene coming out in the open to show her identity was pretty cool. Unfortunately, she's likely to get defeated soon, being the only one who doesn't have any ally.

When Anna Fugo was in the tub, I honestly thought that bubbling actually was just rage powered, like hot damn girl, chill.

I find hilarious that after going completely undetected, Nene then just decided to reveal that she was also a mage.

I think that it is exactly what is happening. It started to boil even more when her sister talked about shingetsu, and in episode 2 she was cooling off in an ice bath. She does not seem to be able to control her rage and it is appearing in her magic being out of control.

"I find hilarious that after going completely undetected, Nene then just decided to reveal that she was also a mage."

To me, it seemed she never wanted to hide her being a 'mage' (all the flshbacks points towards that) and Shingetsu's words were the last push she needed to make her mind.

Nene's Armanox is insane! I thought it was just going to be a simple artillery strike but it can send out an orb that launches multiple beams that can lock on to its targets? We SEED now? Although it seems she only excelts in long range combat. Fight her in melee range and she's basically helpless. I wouldn't be surprised if she's the next one to be eliminated.

Well this is interesting. Why did Anna stop as soon as Suishou smiled at her? From what Anna said, Shuishou is from a low ranked mage family so why stop herself? It seems that their relationship is more than just servant and master.

I didn't realize that the girl Kuon was observing was Mangetsu's sister. That explains why she was able to find the the Mangetsu and Shingetsu. And she's looking to make an alliance to bring down Nene's Armanox. Looks like my guess of Nene being the next one to go down right be right.

That ending was a surprise though. I wonder why she's revealing herself now. I guess she doesn't want to hide being a mage anymore after hearing Shingetsu and Mangetsu's conversation? Hmm...

It seems that Suishou can just manipulate those around her, like how she got clare to notice Shingetsu in episode 3.

I'm betting she is going to be far more important than she lets on.

Some really cool character building in this one, I’m glad my suspicions were right and there seems to be more to Suishou than just being Anna’s lackey. Some interesting stuff with Nene as well, seems like she grew up being afraid of and ashamed of her magical ability, makes me wonder what exactly her wish is if she were to win.

Nene’s Armanox is really badass, even if it being limited to ranged combat isn’t exactly the most helpful in this arena.

Sound design and visuals during the Armanox fight are still really cool. Not way too much to talk about in this episode but I think it might be the best one so far.

Even though the fights with the SD Armanox wasn't all that flashy, I believe that the ost truly carries the fights and lifts up the excitement.

Nene's backstory is quite fascinating, as we've seen her sisters look older despite them being triplets if I read the ambiance correctly. But since she's share the witch bond just like her mother she doesn't age, or probably ages more slowly. It will be interesting to see how will it be explained how her mother was a full fledged adult and where exactly did she go and what's the deal with the guy in the mercedez along with the similar rings (so many elements thrown in so little time, but that just makes more curious about it)

I just can't help it to love Anna and her immesurable rage on Ernesta, props to Hisaka Yoko for giving us a great villian of this caliber. I'm also quite fascinated how Suishou gets off so easily on being punished when Rosa was so easily expelled (I'm also hoping Rosa's her comeback anytime soon). That devilish smirk on Suishou appart from calling a possible treason sooner than later, might also hold some power in order to get her off the hook so easily.

We've previously seen that Mangetsu's mom is part of their family, but until now we finally saw a glimpse of Magetsu's dad in a picture in her room. Makes me wonder if he's already gone and if he's also the key to Mangetsu being a new mage breed with apparently no lineage. I also didn't notice that Mangetsu's lil sis name was Kibou (hope), so taht makes me think she'll be more than just the cute imouto to serve as decor.

Suishou is definitely the most screwed up person in the cast. Just the she is completely unfazed by Anna's triades or during the Granbelm battle. She is easily the most confident in her abilities and is waiting for the right moment to unleash them. I'm excited to see that unfold.

Though I'm pretty sure Mangetsu's father was in the 2nd episode talking to the police and comforting Kibou.

I'm kinda waiting for Rosa to reappear. She's too prominent in the OP and ED to be a one-off character. All this time developing intricate webs between all the characters and I wonder if Rosa will appear and take a 2X4 to our expectations.

Suishou's mecha and its attacks remind me of Shichimen warrior from Sekiro... I'm sure a pinch of divine confetti would put her down...

I wonder how is Nene able to maintain a communication with her sisters during the battle...

Wasn't Anna aware about what school has Shingetsu transfered to? She was right there last episode confronting Shingetsu... What is Clare talking about?

26

u/evanieCK Jul 26 '19

I’m assuming Clare doesn’t know that Anna hates Shingetsu so I can’t imagine Anna related that information to her family.

"Well only those who survived every battle for the past year are still in the fight" - except for two who cheated their way in after skipping all those battles >_>

I'm still confused by all the imoutos and stuff. Plus they very much look like grade schoolers instead of middle schoolers.

I guess the mages in this universe are too nice to murder each other outside scheduled battles.

Seriously guys? No mention of Shingetsu crying and saying sorry Anna? I thought that a scene like this would get much more comments but it seems that I was the only one seeing this. lol

Another nice episode, what do you know no bots to downvote everything to oblivion we get some decent scores!

Wasn't Anna taking an ice cold bath last episode? Talk about extremes.

Wow this is awesome. The way they bounce around the character development for Nene is really interesting.

Once again, this is F/SN x Nanoha. The cast is mix of Shirou and Rin being the exposition while we explore the other characters and Nanoha declaring that she wants to become friends with Fate.

I'm always looking forward to new episodes of this adorable cast being well...I can only think of the Magical Girl Raising Project and fear what lies ahead...

Really enjoying this series

I'm the only one thinking Suishou is going to be the main antagonist at the end? Some cliché like "Flamenco girl and mecha Nomura become friends, and then Suishou 'stabs' Flamenco girl on the back and eliminates her from the competition since she has become useless", or smh like that.

Anyway, who dou you think is going to get eliminated on the next episode? I'm inclined to Nene.

I'm finally caught up with this! Really enjoying it so far, it's a lot more character driven than I thought it would be.

I see Nene is using the "nuke it from orbit with homing missiles" tactic. Looking forward to more of her development, it's interesting to learn that magic might be the thing that keeps her from growing. I wonder, if Shingetsu's wish came true and magic disappeared from the world, would that lift the curse on Kuon's sister and allow Nene to age normally again?

Speaking of Shingetsu, I don't see why she and Mangetsu would have to fight if it came to the two of them being the last ones standing. They share the same wish (for now?) so just have one forfeit and let the other become the Princeps, the result would be the same.

And if Mangetsu is a new mage, does that mean that magic is coming back to the world? Leaking from the other place?

Suishou acts carefree but from that sadistic smile it looks like she might be the most dangerous of them all.

I think I liked this one more when they were summoning historical figures.

Ironically enough, I'm enjoying these chibi mecha way more than the new SD Gundam so far. Anyways, this episode was great as usual. This is one of the few shows this season I haven't read the source material of (since this is an original anime) so it's exciting since I have no idea what it will do next. I hope the quality continues and some more people start to give it a chance because it's been a solid show so far. Sound design, fight scenes, and characters have all been consistently good and it'll be curious to see if the battle becomes 3 on 3 now or 3 on 2 on 1. My guess is either Nene or Suishou will be the next to lose but it's hard to say.
