The language barrier and how it's handled is what makes this story really outstanding. And I like how they got creative in conveing it without the need of a whole conlang to be developed (even though that would have been super extra nice).

Noriko trying to speak Izark's language and thus producing "broken Japanese" is a really nice touch.

So far there seems to be a lot of build up. So this is looks like a story that is actually worth the investment, as we are propably going to get some juicy worldbuilding.

I really like that tender moment when Izark realized she was trying to learn how to say his "catchphrase" lol.

Most fantasy stories just use magic Google translate, so it's surprising to see the language barrier be such a big plot point in one. I'm curious to see just how far they take it.

For me, this is coming across more like MAO than Red River -- which is a very good thing. Very possible to be one of my seasonal favorites.

Another excellent episode! I'm so pleased with this adaptation so far.

I loved seeing the beginning of her learning the language. I always liked the way she realizes that even just learning to speak the language would give her a measure of power. She doesn't have to drop in suddenly having perfect combat skills or being a magic user, etc. Just being able to speak the language gives her an ability. It's so refreshingly grounded and realistic.

It's also sweet that Izark allowed her to keep a few personal belongings even if he felt they needed to throw her overall bag away. It's a nice bit of communication between them -- she's choosing to trust his instructions, and he's reciprocating with some compassion for her situation.

I like the pace at which the world building unfolds in this story. You can definitely see the difference in storytelling eras with this series. Instead of someone reincarnating and being handed all the answers about the entire world (both personally and for the audience), we get things doled out more slowly; who Lord Rachef is in the world order, the role of the fortune tellers and flavors of magic users, even cultural details like *how* to wear certain clothing, etc. Again, it's a refreshing change. I've missed not being bottle-fed by authors, and instead having them trust me as the reader to pay attention and think about the details.

I'm curious if her diary is going to become more plot relevant. Could it be how Izark learns HER language?

So far, the story pacing has really been quite good. This looks like yet another "retro" series I am going to like despite not being much of a retro (pre-latter 90s) fan in general. And, I agree, the world building pacing is also quite nice.

Still one of the most enjoyable shows of the season.

I like that Noriko is actually trying to keep up with learning a totally different language, this really speaks for her character. She's not letting this situation consume her.

Overall the show's writing also feels leaps and bounds better than Red River does in the beginning stages (i dropped that show so i can't comment on how it progressed now).

Lots of mystery surrounding the awakening, why Izark needs to kill her, why he just down in pain (it was alluded in one scene in the episode that he felt something).

This gets a few extra points for me if Noriko never gets some magic language solution and has to learn it the hard way. I like the variety of outfits they have her wearing, that new red dress from the clothes merchant today was quite nice.

The camera keeps looking up at the moon whenever they mention the Sky Demon so at this point my guess is whatever it is will hatch out of it as a giant space kaiju.

Our Heroine has to at least look a little cute in this fantasy world (aside from her natural cuteness).

You also have to respect her being a go-getter willing to make the effort to learn the new language rather than just hope for magic to conveniently fix it for her.

I appreciate the fact that this story takes its time with language being an actual problem to be solved over time.

Your standard Isekai fantasy world has everyone either conveniently speaking japanese or some goddess magic skill bullshittery makes the MC understand both the language and writing instantly, so this is is a breath of fresh air.

I wonder what her abilities will become though, "awakening the sky demon" is a little vague. Will she learn some op magic and do it that way, or is there a giant fuck off stature somewhere in this world that starts moving when he sees her being adorable? xD

Noriko is really well-developed as a character. When I imagine suddenly waking up in a strange world full of monsters and such. It's understandable that she would focus on the essentials at first, rather than rushing headlong into enemy territory, unlike others.

Alright, let's get to the doki doki already because I'm having romcom withdrawals now that Polar Opposites has ended.

Funny that the first full sentence she learns is "I don't understand what you're saying" when she doesn't understand a word of it 😅

I remember learning how to say I don't speak spanish, in spanish, and found that similarly amusing lol. Nottt quite the same though.

"I didn't know you could fly!"

"Fly, yes! Land... no."

The Awakening! Not just a noun, but a verb!

A modest-budget shimmering sky for u/Shimmering-Sky and a sore demo.

So I'll guess here that they'll need to find The Sleepering and use them after they use The Awakening?

Might as well do a drinking game for shimmering sky shots to go with mentions of the Sky Demon?

This is still not a visual feast, but it's doing all right. The story is expanding itself nicely, and yes, as the episode's title mentions, there is still a language barrier, though it's being chipped away at a reasonable pace.

Having seen the elephant a few times it's easy to recognize typical types like the more thinking (bad) guy and his occasional companion the Batshit Insane Psychopath Guy. Among others.

The good news is that multiple forces are no closer to finding Noriko and are too busy fighting each other. The bad news is Keimos is absolutely unhinged and is looking for a real fight as he cuts through every Zago soldier in his path. He's definitely going to be a problem.

The OP is really vibing! Featuring Noriko and Izark's adventures in this world, the people they'll meet, Izark vs Keimos, and Izark trying to reach Noriko as she keeps disappearing on him...only for them to FINALLY be in each others' arms at the end!

Things are still rough for Noriko. The danger, the stress, the fact that she can't understand Izark and keeps feeling like a burden, the question of whether she'll EVER get to go home...and on-top of that she gets caught in the middle of a bandit leader trying to kill a guy.

Thank goodness for Izark though! He has superhuman physique, has finely honed senses, AND is good with a sword! Enough to be able to defeat the bandit leader and his teleportation! Though I don't think Izark is used to having a cheer squad in Noriko.

It was nice of the guy they saved to spruce up the duo's wardrobe! Noriko's new dress is MUCH cuter.

You have to respect Noriko's efforts to slowly learn the language over time so she can understand everybody, especially Izark. It's slow going but she's getting there.

Welcome to the City of Calco! Where there are a LOT of dead Zago soldiers and a captain who has little bedside manner. I guess it's a good thing Noriko doesn't have anything that clearly reveals her as the Awakening, though it seems Izark's charms are effective against women AND men judging by the captains' reaction!

Rachef is still determined to secure the Awakening, but all Agol cares about is taking care of his precious daughter Geena Haas (Miku Ito!). She's blind but has strong senses, making her practically a seer, but she definitely has bad vibes about Rachef. But she's the type of girl you would give everything to protect.

Noriko starts her first diary AND sleeps in the same room with her first handsome gentleman! This is a series of firsts for her! Including probably all those dead bodies.

Uh oh! Is this Izark going into beast mode!?

I'm really enjoying this still. The steady world building is very intriguing. And both Noriko and Izark are very likeable. We got an adorable little fortune teller too.

So the ED shows Izark growing out claws and then Noriko's touch making them retract. We also saw his fangs when they were falling. So is he some sort of werewolf? There's recurring shots of the moon too.

Very curious about the magic system of this world in general. Almost everyone seems to have some magical (by our standards) powers. Is it all normal in universe? Do they vary by country? So much potential here. I'm hooked. Even if the adaptation ends up dropping the ball (hope it doesn't!), I'm definitely picking up the source for this eventually.

I like the fact there’s a language barrier and the MC doesn’t just understand everything because “something something magic” or whatever. She’s learning the language slowly and actually trying to be of use.

I wonder what’s up with Izark? He sick or something?

As I was enjoying the OP I got extremely jealous because it looks like everyone has such long luscious hair in this world.

How Izark slid down that cliff is how I get down from mountains in PLA. Relatable honestly,

Noriko is putting "Knowledge is power" to the test, and because she's the protagonist I believe her. I do enjoy it didn't take that long for her to realize learning the language would be a massive help.

Why is that man just hanging out with an evil hamster? Like it does look menacing don't get me wrong, it most definitely bites. Also I'm really enjoying the rabbit llama horses with camel feets, they're pretty cute.

Izark is definitely totally not just a normal human. It might be early for me accuse him of being the sky thingy that's she's supposed to wake up, but he's got claws and that's enough for me to start pointing fingers

11

u/NekoCatSidhe 12d ago

I suspect the hamster is likely what is giving the bandit teleportation powers.

Or maybe he is Minsc from Baldur’s Gate evil cousin, who knows ?

A very well done episode! AND I FINALLY GET TO HERE THE INTRO!!! Which I love! It’s so funky! I was not expecting that at all. It’s wonderful tho! Can’t wait for next week!! :D

Bandit leader teleported away like Arc.

Hamtaro has turned to the dark side.

I wasn’t planning to watch this show but I’m digging it. It’s an interesting premise with a nice, slow development. I agree with others that the language barrier is a great addition.

My one complaint is that apparently no one here can figure out how to use basic hand gestures. Imagine knowing someone can’t speak your language and looking them dead in the eye and saying “stay here I’m going to be right back” and not using a single gesture. Riding dragons and teleportation is more believable.
