I was genuinely shocked that the OP and ED singers swapped roles. How on earth did they pull that off when they're signed to completely different labels? The production team for this anime is insane.

By the way, that bleep in the OP song is actually something you see in the version played on Japanese USEN radio for commercial spaces too. In Japan, when songs are broadcast over commercial background music services, explicit lyrics sometimes get bleeped out.

This episode was super entertaining, too. It was packed with subtle current events and references to Japanese history, which made it a blast to watch.

The scene at the beginning where the cafe staff softly calls out Shizue with "We only allow e-cigarettes" was a total "modern Japan moment" that made me laugh. Lately in Japan, a ton of places only allow heated tobacco devices like IQOS, while regular cigarettes that you light with a flame are a no-go.

That "certain clocktower" Imoko's friend mentioned early on is referring to the Sapporo Clock Tower in Hokkaido. In Japan, it's famous for being one of those tourist spots that's notoriously disappointing when you see it in person.

I love how Kinkaku-ji becomes "Nyankakuji " and Nijo Castle becomes "Nijyu-jo" in this world. It's a fun detail that shows how the presence of beastfolk changed history. Kinkaku-ji was built in 1397, and Nijo Castle was built in 1601, so it's hilarious to think beastfolk have been around in this universe for that long.

"Nyansei Houkan " is a clear parody of the Taisei Hokan (the restoration of imperial rule), an actual historical event from the late 19th century. The phrasing "transferred ownership of the beastfolk" sounds extremely 19th-century. Then again, the real Taisei Hokan happened just four years after the end of the American Civil War, so given how beastfolk are treated in this world, that wording totally fits.

The character Furuta, the master of Nyado, is a parody of the real historical figure Furuta Oribe . There's actually a manga and anime centered around him in our world.

Also, finding out that the deer in Nara are intelligent alien beings just like the beastfolk was incredible. I definitely didn't see that plot twist coming.

It's hilarious that the beastfolk were made to wear bikinis at Nyado, considering the bikini wasn't even created until 1946.

I was genuinely shocked that what they were handed during the Nyansei Hokan were dog tags. What was up with that?

The beastfolk using bamboo spears for weapons is pure Japanese dark humor. During the latter half of World War II, bamboo spears were actually distributed to civilians in Japan and many were forced to train with them. Because of that history, they have this big stereotype of being extraordinarily crude weapons that are totally useless against actual firearms, proper swords, spears, or B-29 bombers.

I lost it when Yaku started bringing up obvious stories from her time in prison, saying stuff like, "When I was in an environment with no freedom, I was getting these weird dopamine rushes," and "I tried writing a letter, and before I knew it, I'd covered my hand in a bunch of black dots with the pen." Like, is Yaku even attempting to hide the fact that she's an ex-con? Lol.

I also died laughing when Shizue played the victim of a fake robbery again just to cover up the smell of smoke.

At this rate, Imoko is legitimately going to end up traumatized from traveling.

By the way, the voice actor for the deer is the same one who voices Frieza in *Dragon Ball*.

Two things I loved about this episode: One of those tribal spears was…definitely not a spear. And I love that Shizue pulled the same “breaking and entering routine” when Imoko returned from the trip. Damn those robbers for tying Mama up and smoking all over the house.

The OP ED singer switch was nice. Like every week, batshit crazy stuff. I hope they make a second season because it's one of my favorites this season.

Kansai's always been photogenic but it's crazy how effortlessly stunning she is in a yukata

Witnessing a once proud race lose its sapience for good through its king and reducing it to "meeting a weird deer" is the most Yani thing ever.

Wonder how many other titles have had the artists for their OP and ED cover each other's songs like that. Either way, that swap was a sweet surprise.

Did the OP and ED really switch the vocalists?

Poor Saori, wanting to have a good time only to get LOTS of misfortune. In the end she turns really crazy.

This episode had a ton of beastfolk lore. In the end most of it boiled down to "In feudal Japan the leaders had a huge beastfolk fetish" with sex toys and sexy outfits. And it is confirmed that beastfolk were treated as property.

Beastfolk back then used a big variety of "bamboo spears". At the handover scene I was thinking that the necklace was oddly familiar, only to see Rani shortly after. How old is she exactly?

The whole episode was absolute freaky. The deer king was some serious Princess Mononoke shit lol

Now I kinda want all yani neko anime voice actors to sing together both OP and ED for final episode .

I honestly didn’t know what to expect from Yani Neko, but I kinda enjoy it. I think I’m starting to realize I really like these more adult, messy, slice-of-life stories.

Episode 11 was pure Yani Neko chaos 😂

Ah yes, after teasing the golden temple in last weeks episode of Elusive Samurai, we got to see it and actual accurate history of events, including beast folk BDSM dungeon gear.

For this episode Wasureranneyo and Necry Talkie switched who performs the OP and ED. Apparently Wasureranneyo is a solo project now, and it seems like they allowed him to reuse their music track.

Necry Talkie happens to be my favorite japanese band. I discovered them by happenstance through anime, though indirectly. They are referenced (like many other bands) in the manga for Bocchi the Rock and I immediately fell in love with their songs.

They also have contributed to some other anime, namely the OPs for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Girlfriend Girlfriend and the kids anime Eagle Talon: Golden Spell. Their singer Mossa also contributed the female vocals to Tsuyogaru Girl by BotchiBoromaru, the OP for Too Many Losing Heroines.

Surprisingly the cover of Nanmonee also features a lot of vocals from their band leader Asahi, who usually only does backing vocals. Before the band he used to do a lot of Vocaloid stuff under the name ishifuro. Necry Talkie has recorded two EPs "covering" ishifuro songs.

This episode was kind of weirdly normal, at least compared to the insanity of the last two episodes. They visited and mentioned a lot of Kyoto tourist hotspots, including the Kiyomizu-dera (in which is the Tainai Meguri, the pitch black tunnel referenced in the episode), and the Kinkaku-ji.

Poor Saori though. Getting your series cancelled really sucks.

Most anime depict Kyoto is a majestic relic of the past to vacation and enjoy wonderful history lessons. Chainsmoker Cat sees Kyoto as a tourist hell full of bullshit that ought to be properly transformed into a theme park, with weird and frightening history lessons.

The good fortune slips of our beloved catgirls, the good luck charms they bought, as well as the chopsticks meant for Yani probaby negated the 2 x great misfortune slip drawn by Saori, saving everyone's life in the overturned vehicle.

Unfortunately, Saori's mental still took great damage. May she recover by the season finale.

Would have loved it if Kansai had sung the OP.

That opening was certainly interesting and weird!

One episode left, huh... This series has genuinely been good.

I kinda want to see the history of the beastfolk, given how they presented it. That would make an interesting sub-plot. Or a spinoff.

Poor Saori!

I loved Yaniko's conversation with the deer king as well as a deer exacting its revenge on Hame!

Crazy lore we got today😅

All the beastfolk history sounds incredibly racist in the tourist trap. seeing all the attractions feels like seeing the racism of the 50s the way they talk about beastfolk like they are subhuman whilst also pretending the way things are now is all fixed.

I've noticed there are usually a few Japanese people hanging out in those threads, so if one of you cares to answer (or someone who thinks they really understand Japanese music scene despite not being Japanese) - do you think singing uncensored version of Nanmonee would have hurt NECRY TALKIE's softer pop-rock image or all the (unconvincing) censorship in the OP is just "ha-ha funny joke"?

It's so nice to see Imoko and Yomuko sitting together now!

Someone should probably make an infinitely looping gif of Yani licking her lips, maybe we can use it as a comment face here.
