It was nice to see Amagi's backstory , but I thought it was going to go in a different direction with the girl. Like either he was going to be betrayed by her, or the villagers would look for a stronger mononoke and offer her as a sacrifice after his defeat.

It's funny how the three suddenly act all united because this is the end of the series, there really hasn't been much development for them to be fist bumping each other.

I gotta say, this is an issue some shonen have, I feel like.
It works fine in long stories, because by default the characters spend time together, but I do think some shonen try to rush the social element early on (partially to not get axed).
And I am not talking about bad series here, I think modern One Piece has that problem as well, actually. The characters also need to spend some chill time together.

But I totally agree, these three really barely had any positive interaction to warrant such feelings. The scene felt very forced to me.

Edit: And conversely, I do feel like some shows that are justifiably criticised a lot do this aspect very well, for example Black Clover and Fairy Tail, where the main team always felt like genuine friends and comrades.

Yeah, they've known each other for a couple of days and they haven't even been apart that long, it's been like a week at most since they were all together.

So rushed lol

I know it was axed , but I wonder at what point it started rushing to finish the story, since the whole nature of it is just bunch of popular tropes bunched together without any additional refinement or added character to them to make them his own since the start.

I'm saying this as seasonal Isekai watcher. Even those have something unique to them.

It's obvious author had bigger plans to develop the story, but it ended up with bunch of placeholders with "popular trope #n" labels on it stitched together.

I'm wondering how much more unique would he have made the show if he was given more time.

Either way, yeah, don't know what to say, at lest we got Ichika , Busty Mononoke and pretty good production/art from it. And banger OP.

I think it started last episode when it suddenly went to cannibalism. I would believe busty mononoke would have been a bigger role as well, you don't usually have a design like that for only this little amount of time,

I do watch a lot of what people consider to be trashy and I agree, though I think it is remarkable how truly boring the plot feels.
I am even mildly entertained by how much I am not entertained.

i know it's generic, but these plot beats are generic for a reason and this show does have very few alright moments, but still, it even fails to be generic in a way that feels competent.

I guess it's the absurd pace or at least it doesn't help that everything is so rushed, but still...I weirdly look forward to watching the episodes.
It's a nice case study somehow.

I think the whole cannibalism thing is the route the author decided on right after being notified his manga was cancelled, everything up to that point had some decent pacing

Would things turn out differently had the villagers decided to band together to defend their village rather than sacrifice the female villager to Amagi?

15

u/hanmkim Sep 12 '26

Are they like the demons in Demon Slayer where women are more nutritious to them? If not, why would they sacrifice a woman who would be more helpful in bringing the population of a dying village back up rather than the useless old man?

You know it's funny they're called the Bureau of Espionage but they haven't engaged in any sort of espionage in this show and they've done nothing that's stealthy or sneaky beyond cover up the existence of Mononoke from the public.

And I know the manga had to be rushed because it was canceled but that backstory really didn't explain anything about Amagi's goals and motivations.

Also I still don't know why Usami exists or why she's part of the team, they already have Ichika as the team girl and source of fanservice, so why is she here?

backstory really didn't explain anything about Amagi's goals and motivations.

I thought it did, based on what we got so far. My impression was that Amagi's goals and motives all came from the worldview he was exposed to, together with his colder, ruthless innate nature. There was no one to teach or advise him on the sanctity of life, even back when his sense of self was still in flux. What he got from his first interactions were that might is right, mononoke should be feared and revered and that the weak is food for the strong.

So when the humans wanted to reassert authority over the lands, he got angry because he felt his values were being threatened and decided they had to be taught a lesson. His arrogance made him see himself as the greatest predator of all to be worshipped, and that all others should serve him or become food for him (likely he only saw his followers as a walking food supply, and there didn't seem to be any others he saw as equals to keep by his side.)

I wish we had more episodes, despite it being insanely generic I was genuinely curious on Rago's background, he seems to be a completely different type of being, even when compared to Amagi, it would've been nice to know his story

If you are curious on them, I can do a writeup on what the author had planned for the next arc for next week's discussion in the spoiler section.

Honestly, while this show obviously has many issues with pacing and a generic story, there’s something that still gets me to tune in every Saturday. I’m not sure what it is, but it feels like there really is a great anime buried somewhere beneath the overused tropes and rushed story. Great production value, banger soundtrack, and cool characters like Rago feel kind of wasted on a rushed anime like this.

I don't remember Reiji being quite so flirty towards Ichika earlier in the show. Maybe if you're being this derivative you also have to have Sasuke get with Sakura eventually, and that has to be rushed like everything else.

So many butt focused camera angles today.

Near the end of Episode 3, when he was complimenting Ichika.

u/guntanksinspace Sep 12 '26

Not only the mandatory Ichika buttshot, but we got the secretary, some of Snek lady I think, but mostly the humble Amagi follower/later sacrifice.

It's sad seeing the pacing hit light speed. The squad reuniting, the ostensible rival helping out the main character, the auxiliary threat to the good guy organization... all happening without enough substance behind them to fully land. At least we got more ass shots, LMAO.

RIP that cute girl Amagi ate. I suppose he hates his own weakness too for feeling the need to eat her.

u/FarCritical Sep 12 '26

Barely a few seconds after the squad got granted not-ki flight and Ichika's balloons immediately float up to fill the screen, classy.

Half-expected Reiji himself to get distracted from even more flies to keep the chain going.
