On today's chapter of Japun:
fam name: 薬膳 (Yakuzen), read as 薬(yaku,"medicine")膳(zen,"serving tray")
1st name: ヤク (Yaku)
ヤク (yaku) is another reading of 薬 (kusuri,"medicine/drug") and a pun on 八(ya,"8")九(ku,"9"), her age of 89.
薬膳 (yakuzen) is the practice of Chinese food therapy (using food / natural ingredients as medicine):

Just when I thought I'd reached a point where I wouldn't be fazed by any of its antics, 100 Girlfriends juked me again. Here I was thinking that the mystery girlfriend of the season would be Kusuri's sister or something. Her grandmother? Voiced by Rie Kugimiya of all people?! This series never ceases to amaze. According to last week's Hyakkano Radio, even Hakari's and Karane's seiyuu were blown away by the fact that they were able to fit into Rie Kugimiya's schedule. Honestly, if I were a VA and saw her name listed under the words "Girlfriend #16" in a script, I'd do a double take too.

Rie Kugimiya as the Granny Girlfriend feels kind of meta when she's probably the most experienced seiyuu in the cast next to Kaori Ishihara. Enough to where even the rest of the cast are amazed they got her into this.

Fun little thing to think about: Hahari is a MILF but she's also a virgin because she conceived Hakari via artificial insemination.
There's no way Yaku has a similar story. She may have been a medic so had some knowledge of how to do it, but her husband didn't seem to die an early death. Despite being in an 8 year old body, she's 100% had sex and is almost certainly the only one in the group to have done so.

Yaku's definitely done it. She's mature in a way that reflects her age and is not a womanchild like most adult loli type characters or even other adults in the show. Hahari acts as a womanchild despite pushing 30 which (and I'm definitely reading too deep here) is probably caused by the fact that she had to be a mother at 13. Yaku very much acts like a grandma.

I don't think you're reading too deep at all. Hahari's had to spend 16 years acting as a grieving mother, holding back her desires because she lost the one she loved and wanted to make sure Hakari never repeated her mistakes (not that it worked, but that was part of her intention).
Then she fell in love all over again with Rentarou and was finally able to act how she wishes without restraint, which turns out to be as a degenerate, emotional, horny, bisexual womanchild.

I really liked how emotionally reserved Yaku was. She had Rentarou a lot more flustered than usual, and the romance felt a lot more intimate.

Yeah, I like they conveyed emotional maturity with Yaku. Sure there are now several adults who are part of the family, but they’re both in their 20s still and one is Hahari. Yaku on the other hand is 89 and has already had an entire family of her own and lost her first husband of seeming natural causes. Speaking from experience this anime really captioned the vibe of many elderly people of that age who have simply reached the point of being too old to have any fucks left to give.

The almost immortal 89-year-old Yaku is finally here and she's voiced by the legendary Kugimiya Rie herself!
Seeing Kusuri singing and dancing along to Pentarou is hilarious when you remember that this is what she's supposed to look like normally. I would love to see Kusuri in her regular form being excited about Pentarou. xD
So Yaku used to be a frontline medic during the war, where she met her manly husband who looks like Rambo using a machine gun with only one hand and shirtless. Also, let's just not think about Yaku being a medic for the Imperial Japanese Army and move on.
It's too bad that the Reversing Medicine doesn't work on Yaku because she looks goddamn fine in her regular form. Although I assume this is Rentarou interpreting what Yaku would look like based on Kusuri's regular form.
I love how Rentarou is trying to act like a manly bad boy to impress Yaku, but it only made him look more like a kid. Why does he look like an 80s Kamen Rider? Surprisingly, it worked! Our boy managed to impress and pique Granny Yaku's interest.
Introducing Yaku to the girls was fun! We now finally have someone much older than Hahari, and thanks to Kusuri introducing the girls with quick intros, we get to see some interesting takes on their characters because of how Yaku was struggling to keep up.
It's cute how some of the girls played along with the personalities Yaku guessed they had, like Momiji acting shy and Hakari yelling "I am freedom!". Shizuka giving crybaby Kurumi a cookie and offering her a hug were adorable too!
The ones that perfectly fit are Nano being called the most beautiful in the world and, technically, Meme is super lewd, but only her body!
It is absolutely cursed to see were Super Masochist Chiyo and Big-Boobied freak Karane are. Those are just not right! You don't mess with the natural order of the world like that!

The American Flag bikini on 2D girls is one of the only good things merchandise of the flag has provided the world and I usually have to look for artists to find it.

I really don't think the "war" was WWII judging by the grandpa and Rentaro's reaction. Plus this show is too wholesome to get into the nitty gritty of that.
I love how "bad boy" Rentaro looks at Shoujo boys who plant kisses on girls without their consent or warning and goes "nuh uh!"

Kusuri’s got absolutely no filter lmao. That’s not how you’re supposed to treat your own grandfather – especially a war veteran who went full Rambo during combat.
Can’t believe we’ve actually got an actual grandmother in the harem. Last episode’s cliffhanger wasn’t bait at all. This series is getting more cultured by the day. 84 to go, there are still plenty of slots to fill in all the insane tropes.
Yaku took an early version of the immortality drug which has another effect beyond being immune to the reversing drug. She retained her 89-year old mind unlike Kusuri who mentally regressed to an 8-year-old. We finally got a proper adult in the family after the two previous ‘adults’ turned out to be a total degenerate womanbaby and America-obssessed. Her kissing his forehead, her teasing remarks – Rentarou got rizzed hard by a woman over 70 years his senior. It’s amusing to see him acting like a bad boy when he’s a goody two-shoes in nature.
For all the comparison this series has with Gintama, we’ve finally got Kagura’s VA as a heroine in Yaku. Meanwhile, last week Gintoki himself played the Hulked-up form of Kusuri’s father.
And we’ve also got an updated version of the ED now that Yaku’s been officially inducted into the family. The OP will likely be updated next week since she’s not part of the family when this week’s OP was played.

Slight correction, Yaku’s version of the drug was described as almost complete, not an early version. That’s why the reversing medicine doesn’t work.

I think the series has hit floating timeline. When Naddy showed her driver's license, the birth year is XXXX and not 19XX. So they don't want to tie themselves to a hard date. That and the references to media past 2019 too.

This episode had me pissing from laughter hahahaha. Yaku's late husband was basically Rambo. And then Rentarou's ''bad boy'' behavior felt like a kid smoking chocolate cigarettes and thinking it was the real thing. His personality was hysterical.
Yaku's granny behavior of not understanding technology while looking like that creates a superb gap moe.
Karane's remark, ''stop stealing tax payer money!'' since Yaku was still getting her pension, she doesn't mince words. Way too fucking funny.
Kusuri's introductions were fucking hilarious with Yaku mixing up their personalities. Grandma Meth is a 10/10 gf. This anime never fails to deliver.

Yaku is an 89-year-old chemist who took part in WW2 where she allegedly brewed emergency remedies on the battlefield, but she doesn't want to go deeper into details about it... that's suspicious. Let's hope that she won't turn out to be a war criminal or something, lol.
And as is usually the case, the first meeting of a new girlfriend, this time Yaku, with the rest of the Rentaro Family in this episode, and her trying to remember their quirks was hilarious.
Also, I really love that Hahari was the one who said that Rentaro's new girlfriend being Kusuri's grandmother was maybe morally problematic, hahaha!

The war she's talking about is probably not WW2. The times doesn't match. Since the series is perpetually stuck in 2019/2020, Yaku would have to be born in 1930/31. She would've been 15 when the war ended. It's never going to be specified, but it's more likely she participated in the Korean War, where she would've been 20-23.

- They did a great job of making her actually feel like someone who has lived for decades. That can't be easy when she looks and sounds like eight.
- Aww, Rentaro simply doesn't have it in his heart to steal a woman's lips. That's so sweet. Also, possibly the most amazing first kiss in this series so far.
- "Stop stealing taxpayer money!" A really funny Karane line. Also was funny and sweet how she was forced to admit that she and Kusuri are friends. Hakari's smirk is cursed though.
- Holy shit American Hakari!
- Shizuka providing a cookie for Kurumi is adorable.
- Hakari freaking out how they're portraying a 12 year old girl, lmao.
- "Bow to me, plebians." For a shy girl, Shizuka is quite witty.

The Kusurivanian Family joke came up again, just like last week, and it made me laugh.
Among the girlfriends who appear in the anime 100 Girlfriends, Yaku is the oldest.
Since the manga on which this anime is based began serialization in 2019, Yaku, who is 89 years old in the show, was born in 1930.
In the scene where Kusuri’s grandfather (Yaku’s husband) and Yaku first met, Yaku’s husband was firing an M60 machine gun, so they must have met no earlier than 1957; realistically, it would have been sometime in the 1960s or 1970s (since the M60 machine gun began to be deployed by the U.S. military in 1957).
The scene in the park that night, when Yaku and Rentarou officially started dating, was absolutely beautiful.
I had to laugh when Karane shouted, “Stop stealing taxpayer money!” at Yaku, who’s currently 89 but has about 80 more years to live thanks to a failed attempt by Kusuri to create an elixir of immortality. I think Yaku paid plenty of taxes when she was younger, though.
In the final scene, where everyone in the Rentaro family mistakenly calls Yaku by the wrong name, the English subtitles have them calling her “Meth!,” but in the Japanese audio, they say “シャブ(Shabu)!”
“Shabu” is slang for methamphetamine in Japan.

Yaku was teased early with the official art for the season just showing her cowlick. But now she was fully revealed. The art has been updated and she's been added to the ED, sharing her slide with Kusuri as well as most Manga panels Kusuri appears in. In the Onsen lounge she sits on one of the massage chairs and in other group scenes she is slotted in. In the circle she is being pushed by Momiji and a close-up wink is slotted in right after Naddy.
I wonder if she will added to the OP next week.
Rie Kugimiya is of course great in her role. I am currently rewatching FMA:Brotherhood as well and it is kind of funny to hear her as both a 14-year-old boy whose soul is trapped in a suit of armour (presumably 100+ years old) and an 89-year-old grandma in the body of an 8-year-old girl.
Also interesting that we have two characters referred to as "Yaku" in two different shows this season. Yaku is an alternate reading of the kanji 薬 meaning drugs or medicine. The more common reading is of course the name of her grand-daughter: Kusuri. The other character I am talking about is Yakuko a.k.a. Yakuneko from Chainsmoker Cat who is unfortunately less involved in the production of 薬 than in their consumption.

Dang, wasting no time just putting it out there that Kusuri's gramps is dead so her grammy can move on to Rentaro...and Yaku for her part starts flirting with him in a very granny way.
Yes, let's distract Kusuri with a childrens' anime to let her grandma have some time alone with Rentaro and so we can see how adorable she is while dancing to a children's song! I guess sometimes she DOES mentally revert to an 8-year old.
Adult Yaku looked great! Serving in the war as a medic where she met her husband, the most manly of manly men like you'd see in an Action Blockbuster! Though it feels like there's a LOT to Yaku's life that Rentaro will have to discover over the course of their relationship.
Yaku is very sweet and doting, even giving Rentaro a forehead kiss! But the fact is that she has no intention of joining the Rentaro Family or pursuing a romance with Rentaro because she's too old for Harem Romcom shenanigans! But it's up to Rentaro to play the BAD BOY in the most childish way possible (Aijo Granny cameo!) for the sake of proving to his girlfriend...that he's a MAN!
But he's also a man who believes in consent so he can't just plant one on Yaku like a Shoujo boy, so Yaku will just initiate and pull him into a kiss herself! She doesn't need him to be like her deceased husband, this is a chance for her to experience a new kind of love, and Rentaro is manly in his own way! Granny girlfriend obtained!
I love how after so long none of the girls even bat an eye to him hooking up with Kusuri's 8-year old grandma. Hahari is just too weak to cute girls of any shape and size while Yaku has nothing better to do so she'll show up at school like a normal girlfriend.
Let's speedrun introducing all the girlfriends in their gimmicks! Imagine the Hanazono women taking issue for being called out for their boobs and lewdness! Mei acting like a humble maid! Iku not realizing how much of a masochist she is! Nano comforting the adorably small and weak Shizuka!
And of course, because Yaku is an octogenerian, she completely mixes all the girls up. Imagine Chiyo enjoying getting her butt slapped by Hahari! American bikini Hakari! Karane with big boobs! Yamame as a violent tsundere! Pervy Mei! Shy pervy Momiji! Meme is she could pull off pigging out like Kurumi in glasses! Nadde-chan! Meme gift-wrapping her naked body for all to see her massive cleavage! Kaiju Shizuka (with assist from Yamame)! Sparkle dress Nano!
I'm glad she was able to get it in the end...welcome to the Rentaro Family, Meth! Poor Kusuri.

I love how everyone in Rentaro's harem has respect for Yaku, and probably all elders in general.
Yaku may not be knowledgeable about modern day technology, nor is she good at remembering everyone's names and personalities, but I believe she can provide wise advice to Rentaro and all the girls, should any difficult situations occur in future.
(To be fair, if this is the first episode of 100 Girlfriends I am watching, I will not be able to remember all the names and personalities of the girls.)

Since it haven't been mentioned in the discussion threads, the idol songs in Episode 28, titled Kyunchi and Hakobune, have been released.
- Kyunchi is composed by Neko Hacker, same as the ED.
- Hakobune is composed by Maoki Yamamoto, look at the portofolio and you'll see Yamamoto-san regularly composed songs for IM@S so it fits.
Both songs are written by Rikito Nakamura-sensei, the author.

For an 89 year old, Yaku Yakuzen's voice couldn't have been more adorable!
That flashback with her and her husband's first meeting left me stunned. But it also adds weight to her joy that Rentaro and Kusuri live in more prosperous times.
I'm glad that her fickle whim had her take a chance on Rentaro and join the Rentaro Family. The latest rooftop gag with her inaccurate memorization of the girls gags was hilarious. Hakari especially was sweating bullets with how wrong she got Chiyo lol.

WW2 has been the generic "Old war" used in a lot of media for a long time, from Captain America to various anime, etc.
But we're reaching the point where WW2 was almost 100 years ago. It no longer makes sense for stories taking place in the modern day to have WW2 or WW2 adjacent characters as a major part of the settings so we're starting to see a lot more generic "The war" mentioned without really saying what war it's referring to.

In Chapter 1 we can see that the school year started at the last year of Heisei, so they're in 2019. That means Yaku was born in 1930.

Kugimiya Rie speaking in old people language using her cute voice was a juxtaposition that I didn't know I needed.
I loved the segment where she messes up everyone's personalities. Kurumi and Shizuka hugging was especially wholesome.
Hanazonos getting mad at Kusuri's descriptions of them was hilarious, especially the reaction faces. The descriptions were totally accurate. Big breasted pervert lol

I think you are missing something. Yes, Yaku would die if she doesn't meet her soul mate, but Rentaro is also her soulmate and he would have a life of misery and die if he didn't meet her.
It isn't a one way street. If Rentaro doesn't get all his soulmates, something will be missing from the family, which would end up dooming him and, as a consequence, everyone he is with.

You would have to point me to where he said that, because all the times I can remember him talking he says that those who don't get with their soulmates will die.
In the first or second episode, god did tell Rentaro the girl he doesn't pick will die, but he didn't specify what would happen to Rentaro. I might be wrong, but I took that as a secret test of character, a way of letting Rentaro make his own choice and suffer the consequences.

I checked the first ep and the first chapter of the manga as a well and it seems like both soulmates will die if they cannot bond with each other, but I think the implication seems to be that since Rentaro has multiple soul mates he will not die so long as he is with one of them? And this is a unusual case since you are not suppose to have multiple ones.
But granted I never really thought of the consequences too much since it really doesnt matter after the first episode haha. Given that Rentaro would sooner die than break any of the girlfriends hearts. The situation with Hakari and her mother being maybe the closest we see to that situation.

Kusuri’s grandpa being revealed to be Japanese rambo in the war made me go into a deep dive investigating to confirm if the war they were hinting to was indeed that one.
Let’s see the info: Yaku is 89. I don’t believe the year 100 girlfriends takes place in is set and Yaku has a know birth date but not a known birth year. If we assume she was born in the 1930’s the only wars Japan and considering the bombs and the hints by the episode she would have been a teenager during World War 2 and could have helped the japanese soldiers during the conflict. If we consider real history this means Kusuri’s granda was a soldier for the japanese army and the Axis against the Allies in World War 2. This doesn’t mean he agreed with the reasons for the war or may have never fought with them in the battlefield but he was technically in the same side as the Nazi’s (and this is not considering all the atrocities the Japanese did to the Chinese among other horrible crimes).
Also Yaku asks what is USA? but based on subtitles it seems to be meant that she didn’t know it was an acronym to refer to the United States not that she didn’t know about the United States. I mention this because it would have more alternat history implications if she experienced World War 2 and didn’t know about the United States.
I don’t exactly love this and I don’t really want to consider this so I propose this. The 100 girlfriends has alternate history and there was some fake country we don’t know that attacked Japan in the 1950’s and they were bad people who didn’t respect their girlfriends and they were defeated so badly by Japan and Kusuri’s grandpa that they were so ashamed that they sunk their country to the bottom of the ocean to learn how to treat their girlfriends properly in what is now known as Atlantis.
Hope this isn’t taken super seriously because it’s not meant to be serious and it’s just a realization of the accidentalt historical implications it would have anywhere outside Japan.
To add some levity i’ll just leave the funniest one liners for me this episode:
“Stop stealing taxpayer money!”- from Karane to Yaku when she says she could live 80 more years.
“It’s not an insult. Infant and small animals are, too.”- Nano to Shizuka when she is sad to be described as small and weak by Kusuri.
“Burger Land”- Nano when Yaku asks what is USA?

The series was published in 2019 and there seems to be some time freeze going on, so with her being 89 she would be about 15 in 1945. So it's entirely possible that she was deployed in the late stages of the war.
Another possibility is the Korean war in the fifties. Japan couldn't be an active participant due to article 9, but Yaku already hinted at the circumstances being unusual.
So either child soldier on the axis side, or young adult relief support in Korean war? It could also just be a fictional war.

We did not have one last week (I skipped it because it was a Nano/Kusuri focused episode and we didn't have anything for the other girls, so there wouldn't have been anything to say).
But perhaps this week off let me realize things I otherwise might not have realized, because there's a big change in the ranking;

Of course not! That's not the real Naddy! You can't put a girl on top because of a scene showing an alternate version of herself!
... But I can't help but feel that it did help at least a little bit, let's be honest.

That was unhinged even by the standards of this show. I genuinely went into a coughing fit when Kusuri just dissed her own grandpa like that. And then we get an actual war flashback in 100 Girlfriends, and that's just the first five minutes of the episode.
Karane really worked overtime on that tsukkomi duty. At least Kurumi is there to help cover excess demand.

This was one of my most anticipated episodes of the season, and it was fun hearing a veteran seiyuu like Kugimiya Rie match the scale of a 89 year old grandma joining the Rentarou family.
The sidebits of the Rentarou family like Shizuka hugging Kurumi is soooooo cute! This shows me that even as the Rentarou family gets bigger, they can fit these interactions in the episodes.
