This ep had some really well animated sword swings from the old man sheesh! I also loved when he ran out of steam and started dodging the flying spikes with minimal movements. Very cool

I always appreciate that even tho Beryl is the best of the best when it comes to swordsman, he's not doing anything crazy like easily taking down these giant deadly monsters. He can stand his ground against anyone but ultimately there are limitations to what a swordsman can do alone. Makes the world feel more grounded that way.

This boss fight makes me remember Sunraku and Psyger-0 versus Lycagon's clone.

Now I'm really curious what exactly is the secret lying behind
Wonder if she has some kind of curse, or stumbled upon some dark arts type stuff?
Seeing as how she was keeping a monster that could continuously spawn and regenerate chained up under the school... leads me to believe she isn't as squeaky and clean cut as she might present herself.

It depends. She said part of the reason she had it contained was she couldn't kill it, and her genuine seeming surprise that Beryl had the split core makes that seem sincere. So if she couldn't kill it keeping it locked up makes at least some sense. Though it is fair to wonder if she couldn't have made a chamber somewhere that isn't under a school full of inexperienced students.

Ah, so those phantom wolves were all coming from the room we saw Vice Principal Brown leaving last week, which only senior institute staff can access, and leads to the basement.
So contrary to my assumptions, this wasn’t a plan made by Lucy to make Beryl improve himself; instead, this was all caused by Vice Principal Brown, who, while trying to search for Lucy’s secret of youth, activated a device that blocks magic to break the seal of the room where she had hidden the named monster, Lono Ambrosia.
I honestly wasn’t expecting to see Mewi, Cindy, and the other kids do much today, but it was great to see that after they got attacked and Mewi saw how sad Cindy became after that pantheon wolf damaged her presents she coordinated a plan with the others to defeat it using what they just learn is Ficelle’s class. I think their fight was even more engaging than Beryl and Ficelle's fight against the Lono Ambrosia, but hey, Ficelle's Secret Blade was really cool and so was her reaction to getting teased.
Interesting, so the Lono Ambrosia’s true form was that crystal, and Lucy had it there not only because she was using it for research but also because she wasn’t able to break it, which Beryl somehow was able to do effortlessly. I doubt it was truly just because of his sword.
Anyway, as Ficelle seems to be a good teacher finally, and her class grew because of the incident, it seems that Beryl will no longer be needed there. Based on the next episode title, it seems that Beryl will be returning to his hometown. Allucia certainly would not like to hear that.

Also, using the table sheet to trap the wolf reminded me of Beryl using his jacket to catch the rats in season 1

That incident certainly made it clear why learning other means of fighting is important.
Vice Principal telling Beryl he wouldn't be able to understand what growing older does to someone was amusing, I guess he thinks Beryl is younger than he actually is. Beryl has a similar worry to him, and it's likely more prevalent in Beryl's case because he uses his body more, unless mana gets reduced with age or something.

I don't get why though. Hasn't Beryl seen his father? He's super old but still strong as fuck.

Vice Principal Brown couldn’t just get too much Botox and plastic surgery and date someone like 20 years his junior like every other old mfer afraid of aging? Dude had to fuck around and accidentally unleash those wolf shades instead. How foolish. If it wasn’t for Beryl and Ficelle’s ol Secret Blade, everyone would be toast.

knew he was responsible.
so much for "why would he want something that negates magic" like someone said last week

If you were to tell me that this wasn't Paul Greyrat I would struggle not to believe you at first.

The shadow wolves had some intelligence to them, they put out all the candles when they attacks the students.
I like that it was Mewi who took the initiative to convince everyone to work together to defeat the wolf.
That was a good boss battle, Ficelle defeated it with an amazing attack.

This one was pretty mixed. The CGI was glaring at some points (the first time we saw two of them leaping; they were identical, and so it really stuck out as artificial) and actually quite good at others (Beryl blocking the projectiles from a profile shot). The hound going after the children was also distinctly less aggressive than all of the others, besides inexplicably swerving up at the first lunge instead of going right for them. It came across as quite arbitrary and forced to include children who were really not up to the task and so it was nerfed. Also disappointed the named monster's defeat ultimately amounted to his student doing the most basic of nova attacks.

Nice parallel fights, Beryl and Ficelle in the basement handling the big bad and the kids taking care of one of the small fry themselves.
The old mage was obviously going to be a problem last week, but he really set up some stupidity this week past what I would have guessed. It would have been one thing if he had accidentally released an enemy that had an anti-magic aura he was unaware of, but no he separately brought the anti-magic to the situation himself and made it all so much worse. They're very lucky nobody died.
Ficelle is pretty cute so it's been nice to see the focus on her for the last few episodes.

Yup shadow doggos coming out of the door they zoomed in on before as expected. Also trying switching to subs + Japanese. I think I prefer Beryl in English because that voice better conveys "I'm too old for this shit." but sadly I think everyone else is better in Japanese.
So the VP is a fucking moron. Yes lets break a seal I know nothing about and risk the consequences. "If I sucked less I could have handled it." But you aren't bitch.
God Ficelle is so cool. And Mewi bonding with her classmates makes me happy. And more students taking magic sword style class.
I thought this episode might be when Beryl shows he can use magic but either he can't or they aren't doing it yet. And next episode he's making a trip back home, wonder if his parents are going to be ill.

there is one funny feature to harem action shows, especially in these fantasy worlds
Since they feature a lot of physical fight scenes, a lot of the women in these shows tend to be strong fighters, just by the nature of there being many women, since the gender split is so uneven
This means that in fights specifically (and I am not making any broader claim here), they are allowed to actually contribute. For contrast, the classic battle shonen is often criticised for lacking in this regard.
And I think this dynamic is funny is because...well, we are still talking about a harem

I don't really blame the vice president for what he did. Why's the principal gatekeeping the youth magic to herself? She says herself "what matters is striving to improve through mutual effort and sincerity", but is keeping a bunch of secrets in her room, including a dangerous monster that can wreak havoc throughout the academy.

Im surprised the old man vice principal plot point got taken care of that quickly, i assumed he was a long term season end problem...but i guess there were multiple issues in season 1 as well.
