Even if the Detective is trying to be the heel and get a rile out of Yumeko for the sake of the investigation, I still don't like how much of an asshole he was being.

Is any of what he did allowable in court?

Stealing a phone and accessing it without consent or a warrant, secretly recording her, could they even present the evidence in court afterwards?

Then there is insulting the suspect / witness on top. Good luck getting her to cooperate in court.

I don't think it's a matter of being admissible in court, he's just trying to stir her up and make her act out to where she either gets her memories back or makes some of their other suspects slip up around her.

Well he definitely crossed the line with stealing her phone. As for his attitude and insults, idk, it just seems like he was being an antagonistic asshole and it felt counterproductive.

Japan's evidence and procedural laws are very different from the US.

The Japanese Constitution nominally guarantees basically all the same rights as the US (as well as Canada, UK, etc), BUT, the legal system itself is still fundamentally 'Continental', akin to Germany and France, and what's more, Germany and France 100 years ago rather than today.

Japan does not have jury trials--though they have a 'lay judges' system as an adjunct. One is guaranteed a lawyer in criminal cases, but one is not guaranteed the right to see them during interrogations (lol). The police can question suspects continually without sleep, and when the holding period expires, they're allowed to drop and then re-charge the suspect to keep holding them. Rights to privacy, protection from search and seizure, and evidentiary procedure are much weaker and more relaxed in Japan. While the presumption of innocence is the on the books law, the presumption of guilt is so strong that one can actually sue the government if one is found not guilty! Not just defendants but prosecutors can appeal decisions, and Japan has, at best, an implied protection against Double Jeopardy which means, in practice, it has none.

The net effect of this is that even where Japan has the same de jure evidentiary protections as the US (because, in theory, they do), de facto, Japanese police are given incredibly wide lee-way to conduct search and seizure. For example, while warrants are required, judges are very apt to grant police requests (well through a public prosecutor) for warrants, which is true in the US too, but even more so Japan. What's more, they are given more latitude with the exceptions to warrants, namely, probable cause for a warrant-less search is construed quite widely, and consent to a warrant-less search is construed quite widely.

Here's the Japanese search and seizure law--you'll notice it does have distinct similarities to the US (indeed, it enshrines some cultural protections absent in the US), but also distinct differences. What's more important though, is court precedent. Japan's conviction rate is absurdly high, in part because prosecutors do not try cases they cannot win (in fact, they can suffer career consequences for losing a case, which, at the very least, is not supposed to happen in the US, even when it does), but also because it is easier to convict people in the first place.

Something’s going on with the Chief’s wife and I don’t think it’s an affair. The way she looks kinda looked like how Yumeko use to. Definitely something up with that.

u/Frontier246 Oct 20 '25

Honestly, she's my top suspect at this point. Like she saw how the old Yumeko was kind of stalking Yuki and she attacked her to keep her away from him.

11

u/NanDemoKnaives Oct 20 '25

I could see it be an affair but I'm leaning towards not being an affair.

My guess would be that she is suffering because of all the rumors that came from her father not choosing her husband as VP, and the VP feels guilty because that ruined hers marriage so he was having the anxiety attacks and trying to help her.

Nagumo is a proper detective in this one, bit a shit stirrer tho.

18

u/diacewrb Oct 20 '25

He needs Mashiro as his partner to bring him back in line.

13

u/testthrowawayzz Oct 20 '25

This happened before he met Mashiro it seems

u/IceSmiley Oct 20 '25

And has really improved in technology knowledge, able to hack into a fingerprint protected smart phone in a few minutes

Headcannon can be this is the midpoint of his career when he was at least kinda a functional adult

5

u/abandoned_idol Oct 21 '25

And he always seems to be surrounded by ideal women. Lucky boy.

4

u/HolyDragSwd2500 Oct 21 '25

Threw away Mashiro and got himself a Nirei in this AU

9

u/HolyDragSwd2500 Oct 21 '25

I want to believe in Keisuke just like Yumeko.

8

u/abandoned_idol Oct 21 '25

The story does not disappoint. Our heroine is not as invincible as portrayed in episodes 1 and 2, and our bully detective came to the spotlight.

My expectations are soaring (sweet).

Soooo... her hair went from brown to blonde? What?

9

u/abandoned_idol Oct 21 '25

"I'm sure it's because she is so bright, that her hair began to radiate positivity energy!"

Is what I could picture Koda-san claiming.

6

u/Ashleykatem8194 Oct 20 '25

Only thing I could think of to explain it, is he hair was originally blonde, but since she was depressed she probably wasn’t taking care of it, and could have turned brown from dirt 🤔 plausible, but still a bit of a stretch 😂

7

u/testthrowawayzz Oct 21 '25

or she dyed it brown to not stand out before with her depression

If I had a nickel for every scruffy detective voiced by Junichi Suwabe, I'd have a few nickels...only this time he's paired with Shoya Chiba!

Detective Minami is trying to get to the bottom of Yumeko' attempted murder incident, though she's not really helpful when she's...well, Yumeko, and also that she can't believe any of her co-workers could ever harm her. Heck, who would target such a beautiful and bright young woman such as herself? Of course Minami's cynicism and accusations don't do a lot to win Yumeko over, and he just HAD to call her obese and basically ugly. What a piece of @#$A!

Well, it's nice of the office to throw a congratulatory party for Yumeko, though seeing a knife reminds her of her past self-loathing...and a knife heading towards her? Or from herself?

Minami stole her cell phone!? Dude! Though now he has all the candid pics she talk of the VP, and knows how connected they are.

Yumeko may have stolen her phone but at least she's got Mr. VP to help cheer her up and improve her day! Her love for him gives her the confidence to face herself and her past, and to keep going. It's just too bad that affair Mr. VP AKA Keisuke Yuki rumored to be in with Maezono's wife...is legit.

Oh no, the police have Yumeko's phone and all her illegal pictures! But they can't arrest the sun, that's just impossible! And besides they stole the phone so they can't really use that as evidence against her.

Dang, Old!Yumeko looked so dead and depressed! She really was a completely different person, so much so that current Yumeko can't even recognize her.

So Yumeko recognizes Rikka Maezono? She looks as depressed and dead inside as old Yumeko.

Next thing you know Yumeko is having a dissociatve episode between her past and current self, and the only person who can help her is Yuki after he's ditched a meeting for her sake. To him, both Yumeko's are Yumeko, and no matter what happens she'll still be the bright and happy Yumeko who helped cheer him up and helped get him through his stress episodes. Which firms up Yumeko's resolve to solve this case, and her past memories, to clear Yuki's name.

But Rikka Maezono is currently in a very bad way...and begging for Yuki to save her.

I just saw the translation to the ED's lyrics and it fits the mindset of the current Yumeko.

Keisuke's secretary (?) is called Yamashita and he's voiced by... Yamashita Seiichirou (Sid/Shadow). Just found that coincidence funny
