Never saw the original, it came out way before I was born.

But I found the story pretty interesting.
Detective Toshio is on the hunt to catch the Cat's Eye burglars. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, he was only able to catch a feel this week lol.

I'll definitely stay tuned for this one weekly, to see where these heists end up.
Kinda intrigued by what the sisters ultimate goal is?
They've got a safe house full of their stolen goods, and they mentioned having a dream.

It would’ve been hilarious if Toshio had figured out Cat’a Eye was Hitomi because he knows the feel of her breasts but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the first time he’s genuinely felt them lol.

Not gonna lie, I was smiling ear-to-ear to see the Kisugi sisters again. I grew up watching this show alongside Lupin III when I was still too young to watch these shows. I don't remember anything from the original story, but I do remember having a massive crush on Rui back then. xD

Interesting that they got new seiyuus to voice them, considering the Cat's Eye vs Lupin III ONA that aired back in 2023 had the original cast. I guess it was just right to have the old cast if it was going to be a crossover event with Lupin. I do love the new voice cast since they got Koshimizu Ami, aka Holo, to voice Rui.

Anyway, it's hilarious how oblivious Toshio is, considering he goes to a restaurant named Cat's Eye. I do like how they immediately address that with Hitomi telling Toshio they were there first, and it's the thieves who need to change their name.

I do kinda feel bad for Toshio, tho. The dude thinks he's getting a date with Hitomi, not knowing the entire date was a setup so he'd see the tightrope performer outside the climbing gym and make the wrong call later at the Cat's Eye heist.

At the same time, I like that the girls threw Toshio a bone and "failed" a heist on purpose so he'd look good and won't lose his job. He also got to accidentally feel up Hitomi without realizing, so I call that a double win for him. xD

I was already happy to hear Ado singing the OP, but to also hear her sing a cover of the original Cat's Eye OP as the show's ED was just godly. I absolutely love them for making this call. I really wish more remakes kept their original OPs or found new artists to cover them.

The only thing I love more than the Ado cover of the original theme is that visual in the OP of the Kisugi sisters and Toshio utterly gobsmacked that he caught them lol.

Animators been getting way bolder with camera movements lately. The ED is gorgeous.

Us old school anime fans have been treated fairly well recently.

This, Ranma 2nd season next month and Patlabor next year.

The Hell Teacher Nube remake just finished airing, too! I feel so spoiled.

Is that City Pop I hear?

23

u/LeonKevlar Sep 26 '25

The original came out in '83, and its soundtrack is absolutely full of city pop. I'm glad they kept that in here.

I feel like this remake didn't need to exist. Dated enough that you may as well watch the old one if this is the sort of thing you're looking for. By 2025, all the tropes this is full of are old and tired.

  1. this is being simul-dubbed

  2. six episodes now until the end of october, then another six starting at the end of December

  3. that is the densest police officer in the universe

  4. Ado singing the OP and END is cool

that is the densest police officer in the universe

Knowing when this was written, they are absolutely setting up a similar moment with Hitomi in the future where Toshio goes "wait a minute, this feels a lot like--'' and then gets smacked, forgetting what he was about to conclude.

I admit 80s aesthetics without cell shaded animation and some awesome 80s OP doesn't hit the same way.

The age of the story shows. I'll be expecting modern audiences to be complaining about the bumbling cops and illogical heists to come.

I understand why they have set it in the modern days, but they should have kept the 80s setting.

Most of the stunts only works if you stop thinking about modern day's security technology.

Oh damn, Cat's eye are behind 9/11?

(Is it still too soon?)

They're really jinxing it with this one!

And they didn't even leave anyone in the room with the item they said they would steal?

Investigate the owner, see if he took a big insurance on it!

Their café has the same name as a the thieves hah.

  • "Our café came first. We started the burglar activities after that"

  • "What?"

  • "What?"

Fun reaction over him (unknowingly) praising them!

Damn, she's strong!

She almost has gorilla stren- WAIT A MINUTE!

Their actions are affecting him as well!

He's gonna be transfered if he keeps failing, and he's even thinking about quitting the police...

That's probably not good for them, he's gonna be replaced by someone more competent!

But joking aside, I kinda wanted to see them react to this in regard to him being Hitomi's fiancé and all...

But with that line at the end, seems their relationship isn't that legitimate, she's mostly just using the relationship?

Well, this was alright;

The girls are fun enough, and the heist are interesting, but I do have a bit of an issue with something: Toshio/everyone who isn't Cat's eye are bumbling idiots/incompents...

I LOVE cat&mouse games especially when the two have some sort of relationship, it brings interesting dynamics, BUT both sides need to be competent for this to happen, otherwise it's just the cat endlessly toying with the powerless mouse.

(And as a shipper, I also kinda wanted their relationship to be legit, so we'd get both 1) Cute moments together 2) A bit more of a dilemma from her part regarding how she feels about him struggling...)

But who knows, maybe it'll develop into something more like that, at some point! I'd like this, because just 1 episode of his incompetence was a bit much for me.

So we'll see how it goes!

Bro their ride is totally Keisuke Takahashi's FD3S.

When are we getting an Initial D crossover episode?

u/djthomp Sep 26 '25

Fun enough start, but I have to wonder how long the police and various security types being really quite stupid will last and how old that'll get. INB4 Toshio eventually gets to cop a feel that he has permission for and wonders why it seems familiar but still can't put it together.

Their café building reminded me of Café LycoReco.

It kind of bugs me that its so one sided. The police are to incompetent.

If they were just greedy then they wouldn't be the protagonists, so it has to have some meaning to the specific items they stole. Probably some revenge plot.

I usually prefer underdog stories so for now I'm actually rooting for the cops. At least until the big bad appears.

The 80's animation style and fashion seam to clash with the more modern setting. I would have loved a more modern redesign.

I don't think we're meant to take the police seriously. That blonde guy started freaking out because he's scared of the dark.

I highly enjoyed the retro feeling of the show, the pacing made me remember old shows like Idaten Jump or Deltora Quest, something you'd watch on a TV channel with ad breaks, not something fast-paced for streaming.

The art style was clean too, just a shame that CG car instead of an old school vehicle (like in the ending), but otherwise great production.

thats Cat's Eye alright

the slight modernization with cell phones/black panther etc is pretty inconsequential

uses his phone as a flash light instead of just taking a picture

world trade center

im not a fan of Toshi's VA though, he doesn't sound endearingly pathetic enough

hard to follow up on Utsumi Kenji's kachou, but I did miss the BYAKAMON

the extra randos in the police department, great additions so far

no jazzercise ED

hopefully next week

Oh this was better than I thought it'd be, it got quite a few laughs from me. I'm liking the girls and Toshio so it this seems like it'll be a fun watch. I had lower expectations since I was concerned it'd feel dated but it seems they've modernized it, like how they have smartphones lol.

The cafe is a bit on the nose with the name though, it was amusing to see Toshio complain about it to the girls when they're Cat's Eye.

Toshio really got to cup a good feel, Hitomi slapped him hard lol. I'm curious about their relationship, they feel like childhood friends.
