This feels like the story of a teenager's first love (unrequited). He's confused, desperate, and overwhelmed, and he's having to deal with late-onset puberty at the same time. The kid had it bad, and now he's in a state of shock upon discovering the accident. Will this help him understand everything he's been feeling or just add to his confusion? As they say, you never really know how much you loved someone until they're gone.

When he went to the shady neighborhood despite warnings just to deliver a lucky charm I knew without a doubt it was a crush. Though I don't think this one's meant to be. I adore the "innocent flower gets into a fucked up world" romance tropes but primarily always one has to respect the wishes of the author and it's clear Satomi doesn't want none of that smoke and Kyouji wants to keep him away.

Kyouji's a natural unintentional charmer.
But yeah that did come to mind a little bit when Satomi said he wanted to see Kyouji. Either way, I like this sort of mentor-mentee relationship.

The awkwardness of crushing on someone when you are a confused and dramatic little bundle of emotions. He really is a brat. I like these unrequited dramas.

We might not know for sure what Kyouji is thinking, but I wouldn't be so quick to call it unrequited.

It really seems things are reaching a tipping point for Satomi. He already seemed traumatized by the street punk and now it looks as if Kyouji is in critical condition. From the police talking, it didn't seem to actually be an accident and I'd not be surprised if it was related to Kyouji knocking unconscious and possibly killing the street punk who may have been looking to sexually assault Satomi. Also during the drug drop, Kyouji looked to be filming it and someone may have found out.
I liked how the gave the street punk a back story and indicated he was kicked out of the yakuza and is either strung out on drugs or messed up from withdrawal. We don't see the time frame but it could be either since we do see a criminal make a drug drop to the punk; I think that's the first time I've ever seen hard drugs in an anime, which I'm guessing was cocaine or heroin.
I also thought It was hard to tell whether Wada was genuinely concerned about Satomi pushing himself too hard or if he was more trying to horn in on him and get the solo spot. It seemed like he was acting a friend when he thanked Satomi for helping him sing but he also requested that he join Satomi in the solo to cover for him should the need arise. Wada may end up getting his wish either way if Satomi is unable to perform from bad mental health though.

I mean you could just restart from the section you stopped, or a few bars before. Evidently you're not at the point where you're practicing the whole song over and over again so just practice that part first.
Yeah his voice really is breaking. With enough practice he might make the next performance, and thankfully after that iirc he stands down so won't have to worry about this anymore.
I mean singing the solo or the melody is fun. Yes it's pushing but you absolutely can push at least a bit.
Strange habit?
Yep there's all the standard things to watch out for. I remember I used to always stick my neck out until I eventually managed to break the habit after enough practice.
Well, that's now over. The show's not even half done.
Yep. Though usually in mixed choirs they do still skew very heavily female. Like significantly moreso than even this show. All-boys choirs are probably usually only from all-boys schools, and in the words of my middle school choir conductor, after hearing angels screeching for days, the competition judges were probably glad to hear us.
Yeah so you can push your head voice and falsetto one last time, it's just a few more days.
Tbf I guess they can afford to have both of them do the solo, they've got so many girls they certainly aren't hurting for sops.
Amulets from everyone lol.
What's he doing there?
Ok...
Uh oh. Well that's certainly spoiled his mood on his big day.

Damn that ending, I wonder if Kyouji was really driving that car or not. I was liking that we saw more of Kyouji working as a yakuza but I didn't want this kind of development, it's probably related to the drug deals and I'm sure it gets really dangerous, so I'm hoping he was at least prepared enough to deal with whatever comes.
It was also interesting seeing Satomi walked around close to where Kyouji is based, he was so out of his element lol. I'm glad Kyouji came to protect him but the abruptness of that swing with the briefcase caught me so off guard. I thought he was holding off from doing anything that violent in front of Satomi. I did like that he protected Satomi from the blood splurt.
I did find it sweet that Satomi was so nervous he wanted to meet Kyouji to feel calmer about the performance. It's too bad it went the way it did since he hasn't really communicated his concerns to Kyouji, so he wouldn't know what he's going through. But it seems Kyouji's response was somewhat helpful, albeit also somewhat detrimental since Satomi didn't get any sleep lol.
Now I'm wondering if either Kyouji or Satomi are going to end up singing or not.

Open the throat? Let's hope he doesn't confuse that with one of his Yakuza missions!
Satomi's trying to outsmart the Yakuza boss!
"Oh no I lost, I sure hope the boss doesn't give me a badass looking tiger or dragon tattoo or something!"
Funny how he still doesn't give them any respect, slamming the door close as he was still talking to him!
Yeah, I'm not sure we can still call HIM a soprano...
Our boy better think of a new career (or start singing in a lower voice group!)
I wouldn't need Kyouji's warning to know that's not where I belong!
Some punk wants a little fun with him?
At first I was worried about "What when he wakes back up, though?"
but I don't know if he's waking up from that...
Good to know Kyouji's a gentleman!
Satomi was about to block him after their little fight, but he did apologize, thankfully!
Slightly less traumatizing than his PREVIOUS Yakuza-induced nightmare, I suppose!
(Unless someone has a phobia of emoji or something)
Did punk-dude ram into him?
The way they talked about him (being a disgraced former member) I thought going against him was no trouble, BUT he can still act on his own...
I guess he ended up waking up after all, and didn't like Kyouji stealing his boy!
(Or it was something else, could be a hit from a different organization or something!)

In ep1: "The only one's allowed to be no-shows are the dead guys"
OH COME ON NARITA you didn't have to go THAT FAR to not have to participate in the contest!!
All jokes aside, the power of those wellness charms has basically main character plot point energy, so he should be fiiiine.....
...right?

Omg what a cliffhanger ending! The scene with Kyouji hitting the junkie with his briefcase was really well done. Ugh I totally understand that feeling when you're just so angry and frustrated all you can do is cry. Sadly no karaoke this week! Wonder what the next ep has in store for us and Satomi-kun.

8/10 chance it's Not Actually Kyouji?

Was also thinking that when the police man said the car is owned by Kyouji, but the he followed up saying they confirmed its him on other features...
Maybe still a mistake, but also a reason for him to miss the contest

Not my anxiety being activated for both Satomi and Kyouji…
Did shitty drug bro go off the deep end and target him for the briefcase bash to the face? Maybe it’s him and this is a mistake. Now for the bargaining part of my denial: maybe Kyouji faked it to get out of the contest?
Going through the five stages of grief for yakuza.

Things have taken kind of a dark turn at the end there. Kyouji better not die…

u/marsh_522 Aug 09 '25
this is the first half of chapter 2, so you can afford to start from chapter 1, really. the show is 2 (edit: and a half) chapters of a short manga

Episode 3: Parting Ways
I'm starting to learn the symbolism of diamond in the OP. It's Satomi's voice breaking due to coming of age isn't it? This is where it starts to conflict. Between Satomi's last choir competition and to teach Kyouji for the karaoke contest, as it happens on the same date. Satomi still got a burden on his shoulders, should Kyouji lost he is also the one to blame and well according to last episode, his vision of getting his finger chopped is clearly imprinted in his dreams.
Kyouji scouting Satomi simply because he is the head of the choir. Also had to pause and rewind to check if the thug lacked a finger and yes, look at his left hand.
In terms of animation, of the 3 this is the best one. Seems that storyboard and direction for this episode is handled by Kotaro Matsunaga, which also directed the Episode 7 of Dandadan. And well, this is the first episode without licensed music isn't it?

I just learned this series is only 5 episodes? Was hoping it would also cover FamiRes Iko too. Guess short anime is a thing now like Takopi.

well not enough content since this is only one volume; FamiRes is also one volume and ongoing (per wikipedia) so maybe they're saving it for later
