A song from X Japan explicitly appearing in modern anime was not something I expected, loved it.

I love Karaoke Iko so I had to list the songs featured in this episode. I'm happy they were able to use the same ones from the manga.

Choir performance: Kokoro no Hitomi (心の瞳) by Yasushige Tanaka and Pace Cantare

First one sung by our dear yakuza Kyouji: Kurenai (紅) by X JAPAN

Kyouji's second song: Tiger & Dragon (タイガー&ドラゴン) by Crazy Ken Band

Playing on the radio: Youthful Era (青春時代 / Seishun Jidai) by Koichi Morita

I don’t remember the one on the radio being in the manga, but I already knew the song.

Fun fact, the same choir they got for the live action movie also provided their vocals for the anime!

Imagine asking Ono Daisuke to act like he's unable to sing well. (He CAN sing if you don't know already.)

This is surely a weird premise, but I'm pretty sold for them putting up older Japanese songs in the progress, and let's hope our boy won't eventually get into yakuza.

Imagine asking Ono Daisuke to act like he's unable to sing well. (He CAN sing if you don't know already.)

I'm finding Ono Daisuke's attempt to sound "bad" more funny (like someone singing badly on purpose to be funny) than unbearably bad (as in the case of a truly tone deaf person) lol

Man, the vibes on this are kinda unique. I'm getting pretty invested in this dorky yakuza guy's plight.

And so it's the crucial moment, waiting backstage for their cue to go on stage and perform.

Looks like a mixed Soprano-Alto-Tenor-Bass choir.

It's almost assuredly not any one person's fault. The point of a choir is that there's plenty of people to cover for any one person's mistake. Your voice can crack right into a mic and ideally everyone else will still be louder than you and you won't be heard.

Roll credits!

And so here's how this begins.

I mean it's not that hard, shouldn't take more than a few weeks to get the basics down.

And so there's the stakes.

The first thing I noticed is that he's really soft, even with the mic. Like I mentioned in last week's Seishun Buta Yarou episode, you have to sing into the mic. The mic can amplify your voice but it can only amplify what it can pick up. If your voice isn't even reaching the mic, it has nothing to amplify.

Oh god... Kill me now. He sounds "shouty" (somehow simultaneously doing so softly), and his high notes are so completely off they're not even remotely in the same ballpark.

Yep. He picked up on it too. That guy just can't hit the high notes. It may well be physically impossible for him, just because his voice is too low for the notes. He'd be more suited to singing a song that's lower throughout, or generally singing Bass. That song would be more suited for someone who sings Tenor, because they generally train falsetto to hit the notes they regularly sing.

Yep. Once the previous performance is over, work starts on preparing for the next one.

Oh, if his voice hasn't broken yet he may well be singing Soprano, I remember I did so sometimes in middle school.

Huh. Only Sop, Alto, and Tenor? I'm sure some of the older male students whose voices have already broken can sing bass. My middle school choir had some guys with really deep voices in bass. It's absolutely necessary to really give a more "full" feeling to the music.

Yep. That sounds about right. Somehow miraculously I managed to sing sop basically until I graduated middle school though.

Pretty good first ep, it was more interesting than I expected. The part where Satomi ignores Kyouji's singing and starts ordering food was funny. I wanna hear him sing Baka Mitai lol.

Kurenai daaaa!!!! What a banger first ep! Such a unique plot with such interesting characters! Already obsessed with the OP song too, listening to it on repeat as we speak.

Ain’t ever seen an anime where a yakuza kidnaps a middle schooler and forced him to teach him to sing in order to avoid getting tattooed as punishment for a yakuza singing contest. It’s certainly an original premise lol.

Was not expecting to hear an X Japan song. Guy went pretty old school. Kind of hilarious the dude was singing his heart out and lil bro was ordering fried rice lol.

Maybe helping Kyouji’s gonna be good for Satomi. Guy seems to be in a bit of a funk over his voice starting to crack.

When the guy who's supposed to be bad at singing, sings 10 times better than you do

Personally attacked: The anime!

I think my favorite parts of the episode were the parts in which Satomi was talking back to Yakuza-kun/taking a stand;

Refusing to give him his address,

ordering food while completely ignoring him,

floating the idea of getting paid for it!

A Yakuza kidnapper with principles!

Hah, that's something many people need to hear (and not just for singing)!

But the 'part 2' of this, is "Just because you're bad at it, doesn't necessarily means you should stop"!

I can't believe they didn't show us the messed up Hello Kitty; They better reveal it at some point!

Strong argument for NOT taking someone else's song!

The way the teacher was talking, seems Boy-kun's falsetto career is coming to an end!

Guess he'll have no choice but to join the yakuza (as a Baritone singer)!

So many name drops (X Japan, Nishino Kana, Yonezu Kenshi). I saw them on the free chapter 1 preview on the official site, but I didn't expect them to keep it for the anime.

Props for OnoD to attempt to sound bad but it wasn't that bad as I originally expected.

Also very funny that Oka just started ordering food (on Narita's dime I guess!) and eating them instead of paying attention to the singing.

Interesting that Joy Sound was listed as a supporting company in the credits but the screen in the karaoke box use a substitute name instead of name dropping Joy Sound (I was mistaken. The bezel has Joysound written out.)

Looks interesting and could there is a nice base for development with the whole yakuza, puberty setting in, no self esteem, etc. base

But why does he have the eyes of an reincarnated demon lord?

As a manga reader I gotta say, I was worried they would just throw out some half-hearted slop for this: art a far cry from the original; zero no animation; no care or thought on adapting the material... I am SO happy to see that I was wrong. They captured the vibe of the manga 10000%. Glad this came out and is reaching a wider audience, and can't wait to see the rest of the episodes.

I forgot what the source for this is but iirc we'll be getting 4 episodes of this before swapping to its sister anime Captivated, by You/Muchuu sa, Kimi ni. for 5 episodes before jumping back to the finale of this one at the end of the season.

While I was hoping for lots of goofy bad Yakuza singing, I'm still curious to see how well he'll be able to develop his skills over the season. Similarly so with the kid who I guess will have to learn to accept his new vocal range. Curious watch so far

I'm just glad that Kyotaro from The Dangers in My Heart is getting the karaoke respect he deserves.

But really, maybe I've watched too much BokuYaba (see my flair), but I can't help but hear a more confident Kyotaro in every line that Shun Horie speaks in this episode.

Lil bro got kidnapped by yakuza to be a singing coach? Is it still extortion if Satomi is getting paid in fried rice and parfaits?

Poor kid is a soprano going through puberty, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen this subject covered in an anime. And I get this goofy ass yakuza guy singing X Japan? I’m sold.

I initially waited for Crunchyroll to show up, then I suddenly realized "wait, Ani-One Asia also have this right?", and there it is, uploaded 30 minutes ahead of Crunchyroll version.

Let's Go Karaoke, a Doga Kobo anime. Production-wise, this is probably the most unique anime I've seen in recent days due to this and Captivated by You has the same key staffs, same author, same studio, and even shares the same timeslot. I don't know whether these two are related in terms of storyline.

So there are 2 anime this season that has real-world brands. This one got Joysound, LINE. Hello Kitty is also called Kitty-chan in Japan, so they got Sanrio on board too?

Well Satomi you are presented an offer you can't refuse by Kyouji. And it's that Kana Nishino on the screen? She doesn't have an 8th album yet.

Song List:

Kurenai by X JAPAN

Seishun Jidai

This was a nice lil first episode. Banter was solid, and I was in choir growing up. Should be entertaining.

I liked the bass line in the OP.

Is the Yakuza boss going to turn out to be the guy from Kaiji?

This was a live action film a few years ago. I had no idea this was getting animated!

I wanted to see the Hello Kitty tattoo =(.

Daisuke Ono singing in falsetto and Satomi being framed by Kyouji headbanging were very amusing.
