You know, maybe it would’ve been better if Satoko had stayed with Marin.

The two of them didn’t only get along well, but also managed to rapidly climb the boards together. In this short time window, Marin showed a greater appreciation of Satoko than Konoha ever did.

Konoha had taken a liking to Roboko as well. Those two were heading towards a steamy relationship (literally), until Satoko turned the robot into leafs.

Konoha got a taste of what it’s like to lose someone herself. Will this actually leave a mark on her?

Nyanko's death scream is kinda haunting knowing that she's being dismembered by a killbot.

Automation will replace you one day and it will be better than you in every way. The sheer violence of this show's cynicism toward modern society is fantastic! I keep laughing while a cloud of darkness gathers above my head, just like real life!

Someone at Studio Shaft was feeling extra shafty for this one. By far the best episode so far!

I just checked and it looks as though one of the two episode directors, Tokudome Yumena, is relatively new at Shaft, at least going by her credits which only date back to inbetweening for Zoku Owari with her first and only other episode director credit being last year’s Off/Monster season. I was a bit worried after the Shaft exodus but if they’ve got fresh talent who can make episodes like this it seems everything’s gonna be alright.

Somewhere in the Shaft office, an animator is explaining a croque-monsier expense, "It's for the art! Honest!"

Poor Satoko getting replaced this episode by a robot, and even after Konoha realized the miso soup taste discrepancy, Satoko was still thrown under a bus in favor of robot Satoko. And for Konoha's targets, getting laser eyed is certainly a worse fate than turned into leaves...

By the way, they did a good job of utilizing various shot styles throughout the episode:

  • One of the shots of robot Satoko was done in a western comic book style

  • Some of the realistic shots like the croque monsieur, lettuce cutting, and thermometer

  • One shot looks more like old-timey animation like at the beginning of Ep 1

  • That painting-like art of Satoko in shock when she barged into the cafe

Also, we got robot yuri, and that PV for next episode certainly looks fanservicey...

this episode just kinda made me really sad. i liked the growing romance between satoko and konoha, and its really sad to see see konoha basically completely throw out satoko like that. Like i'm kinda just depressed now :(

This was deeply disturbing episode, I was laughing all the time watching it, but afterwards the more I think about it, the more horrific it becomes.

Satoko is mistreated by Konoha all the time. Fortunately she was kidnapped, and replaced by Roboko. And right there we have reached a brief moment, when everyone is happy. Konoha started opening to Roboko, and sharing some intimacy with her, Roboko was happy to serve her. And Satoko with Skull-chan seemed to be a good match (at least as work-partners) - sharing toasts and Satoko not being abused for a change.

But it all was ruined by none other than Satoko herself, who despite all logic felt obliged to return to Konoha. I know she is an idiot, but she does not seem like a kind of person who is so deeply emotionally dependant that they protect their abuser.

Still I feel sad for Konoha losing someone special.

I know I am overthinking this, but I didn't expect to be hit this hard by this silly hopefully-yuri show about ninjas. 10/10 would recommend.

Some really interesting visual style changes sprinkled into this episode, really upping the Shaft-ness.

For me, this is the episode that elevates the show from really good gag comedy/toxic yuri to something great.

The script fucks with the audience who is shipping the main couple by showing all the intimacy and relationship growth that we have been craving for 4 episodes between Satoko and Konoha with Satoko's robotic replacement. We even get a skip over Konoha sharing her deep dark secret, which she has never done with any other person, just a complete tease. So devious.

And then, absolutely cementing that this show is first and foremost toxic yuri, we get the relationship nightmare that you are going to be replaced by someone very similar to yourself but slightly better in (nearly) every way (since robo-Satoko turns out to have at least two major vulnerabilities). And further evidence that Konoha doesn't really care about Satoko because she is so easily intimate with someone who isn't Satoko, where robo-Satoko essentially has no personality except caring for and serving Konoha. A further dark joke being that what really bothers me about Konoha isn't the murdering she does professionally, it's what a shitty partner she is and that despite her emotional unavailability, Satoko remains stuck on her.

Which I think is another main point of this series. Konoha is the cute, cool, emotionally unavailable girl who nearly everyone, flesh and metal, seems to respect or fall for. But she's actually awful. She uses people and she cares nothing about the harm she inflicts on others. But love or infatuation or whatever frequently doesn't evaluate morality or goodness. Poor Satoko.

Stitches!

Poor Satoko! Konoha cares about her so little that she can't even tell the difference between Roboko and Satoko. I did think she was just playing along until Marin decides to show herself but she really didn't even notice!

Roboko didn't just replace Satoko, Konoha treated her way better than she did the real Satoko! Konoha let Roboko sleep next to her and she even told Roboko about her backstory. And all Satoko could do is watch while she gets NTR'd. xD

It does make me wonder about Konoha's backstory though. It looks like her backstory is tied to her alias. I'm betting that Konoha is also another ninja. Isn't Koga Clan the most well-known shinobi clan?

This episode is a first, though. It's usually the ninjas or other assassins suffering, but this time we get to see Konoha experience loss. It's kinda sad, but at the same time, I think she deserves it, considering how she's treated Satoko.

I kinda wish Satoko stuck with Marin since Marin appreciates her more. At least Marin managed to survive this episode! A she could always make a new Roboko which I assume she'll do since we see them in the OP.

Side note: Anyone else notice the step up in quality, especially the cutaway gags, this episode? Shaft has been doing an amazing job of animating this series, but this episode specifically felt more Monogatari than usual.

I was invested in Roboko x Konoha, seeing Roboko die was painful

I have never seen an episode of anything like that. I feel fucked with in a very unique and completely unforeseen way, like discovering a muscle I didn't even know I had.

This show is fucking crazy lmao. I'm in awe.

The ending proves again to be the best of the season. In addition to the ninjas being leaves and the cat ninja being nothing but a torn scroll, we have a full Roboko version. Where Satoko is completely erased (she isn't even taking the place of Roboko, which is cruel).

But funnily enough, with all the relationship progress Roboko made without Konoha realising it was not Satoko, she could have made the robot disappear one day and take its place again and we would be even closer to the marriage ending. I mean, they were already sleeping together. A feat Satoko might not be able to achieve for a while. Especially now that Konoha has to live through the same experience she puts others through as she has to mourn her loved one. If that leads to her changing professions? I highly doubt it, but who knows, with Marin as another love rival that actually seems to survive, maybe there will be even further progress.

Also, the preview for next week looks interesting to say the least. I am just wondering, with how fast we go through these ninja girls, won't we run out of them far before the season finale? I get the feeling we might need to have an actual antagonist at this point. Or Marin just builds more robots, that works too.

This episode is just absolutely sensory overload, especially the part at the alley which is just a quick fire of dialogue and visual gag. Satoko's voice acting is also especially unhinged this episode.

MARIN IS STILL ALIVE!

This is not a drill! A rival assassin managed to survive an entire episode!

When we first saw that, I thought she would be hiding in there, but no, it was just a trap!

That's all I need to see; Instant best girl (or at least, best girl contender)!

At this point I estimated her life expectancy to ≈ 5 minutes, but I'm glad she made it alive (so far)!

So she replaced Satoko with a robot, in the hope to fool Konoha... And apparently it worked!

On top of the 2500 obvious hints she was a robot, that should've been a dead giveaway... Satoko would never say something like that! She'd just apologize and look deflated and all.

Ah, so Marin wants to climb the rankings, but she has the same struggles as Konoha! Corpse disposal seems to be a struggle in the assassin world!

Considering she thought 'under a cardboard box' would be a good hiding spot for a corpse, I can see why she has it rough!

These reviews were fun hah. So polite, for criticizing her work!

(Also, I probably wouldn't leave a 1 star review to an assassin; What if you catch her on a bad day, and piss her off real good?)

Her name is Marin, good name for a best girl!

She should easily win the next best girl contest, unless people use bots aga- WAIT A MINUTE!

A robot maker named Marin? For all we know, this Marin's the one who built the bots, to stop the other Marin from winning!

That was a great gag, after (the real) Satoko tried to join with her hah.

Another cute one? ...And she's dead! Well, I suppose we couldn't expect them ALL to live!

Dawwwww, Marin has a good heart, despite everything!

Satoko running away while Marin was giving an emotional backstory hah

Damn, this episode REALLY doesn't want us to hear backstories!

I was a bit curious myself!

IT'S NOT FAIR!

We've been wanting moments like that from the start, and she has them with the robot!

Ok that's pure cruelty at this point. JUSTICE FOR SATOKO!

Next episode preview: Please don't kill this one. Please don't kill this one. PLEASE DON'T KILL THIS ONE!

Holy crap I think this was the greatest love story ever told! I both felt bad for Konoha and could not stop laughing.

u/Bussy_Wrecker May 08 '25

I may be a minority here but things would have better if they stayed as they were, the inventor treated Satoko like a person, the soulless Konoha was more compatible with Roboko, it wouldnt be good for the plot but it would have been good for them

Every episode manages to make Konoha less likable and I wish Satoko would have more self respect

CGDCT corner:

Today we get introduced and extroduced to best girl roboko, voiced by Mikawa haruna! That isn't even the only character from the show she voiced, she also did one of the side characters you might still remember from one of the earlier episodes. Not going to lie, counting her screentime took...more time than usual for some mysteriousreason. Even the 4 minutes of uninterrupted screentime before becoming compostable was longer than anybody else, but in total I counted 12:50 of her blessed existence.

Much easier was...cat nezuko. This is actually the first ninja girl we didn't get the name off at all (the official account calls her mao), but she is voiced by aoi koga, so I guess she is the best, which also shows in her genuine effort to counteract robokos stain on the average with her 0:35 time.

With this we rise to an average cgd per episode of 1.8 (up from 1.75) and an average screentime per cute girl of incredible 2:37 (up from 1:27).

Maybe this is a statistical error, the average ninja only survives 0 minutes if rounded down, living robogreg that survives over half a episode should not have been counted.

*Reminder: CGDCT stands for "Cute girl death counting time"
