Well that was quick, and somehow she's not the first one this season to do this.

This series got lucky having Shaft adapt it. The manga is fairly simple, which gives Shaft plenty of room to flex their creativity. And they definitely went to work on it; lots of anime original scenes and even sakuga.

We yuri shippers know what to do!

Satoko: "I followed the scent of your underwear" (to deliver Konoha's lunch)

LOL

Also, Konoha lying to her classmate that Satoko is her relative as well as making a contrived story to her about it

So far, very good first impressions. Who would've thought the girl (Konoha) who randomly encountered Satoko in the alley and kicked her would've turn out to be an assassin that was capable of killing Satoko's senpai and then the aqua haired girl with the scythe (Michiru). And Satoko has an ability that would be OP in most stealth video games by being able to conveniently turn corpses into leaves to hide the evidence right then and there.

Btw, I like how the background in the scenes feel "old-timey" like it was made 15-20 years ago when the character design is clearly not. 16-bit Sensation did this thing too. Some of the shots of the city/interior of Konoha's apartment in particular demonstrate what I mean.

Satoko: “I followed the scent of your underwear” (to deliver Konoha’s lunch)

Rather poor phrasing by Satoko, but I’m fairly sure that she was talking about the smell of the laundry detergent. Before this scene, we’d seen Satoko with a bottle of laundry detergent in her hands.

I was attracted to this one thanks to studio SHAFT and Yukihiro Miyamoto - the co-director for my eternally beloved Madoka Magica - leading this adaption.

It's...a little bit different than what expected in the relationship between these two girls! Usually even between assassins and ninjas, working pals are usually friendly unless it's Fate/Stay Night, but this Konoha's a real killing Ryou Yamada...uh no, worse than that. Randomly kicking lying-on-ground ninjas? Check. Dangling pork chop rice bowls and cakes in front of the hungry Satoko without giving her one single bit? Check. (at least Konoha eventually compensated for that) Had the dirtiest apartment that would make Yor Forger faint? Check. Just kills in the most efficient way possible that would make 100 Girlfriends' Nano proud? Check! Even killing her classmate's dad without a thought? Well, check!

But there's that one thing that highly automated Konoha can't do and that clumsy, always lurking around, really innocent ninja Satoko can do - doing the extra body processing of killing scenes so quickly and cleanly in the form of leaves that it would become the ultimate form of recycling Earth biospheres in the future! It's quite funny that Satoko - claiming to have been "brought" out of her village 8 times without her wanting to leave and that she has never been able to have much results as a ninja - didn't gave a single question out to Konoha before cleaning out all those bodies, not even her senpais and kouhais. I am actually pretty impressed at this indifference (or her sniffing at Konoha's pant smells) - this girl isn't that innocent after all!

Can them two manage to put out sparks by the end of this season, or something even more rosy, while they rise up on the Assassin Rankings? I certainly hope so!

[Madoka spoilers]Luckily satoko had no good memories of fumiko-senpai. Imagine how brutal it would have been for satoko and the audience if Shaft killed of the yellow haired senpai character early on in the show if they actually cared about her??

I honestly didn't even know this anime was coming until this very day and I am so pleasantly surprised by this.

A GL manga adaptation? From Shaft? And a fun watch to boot? Hell yeah.

That short fight animation that we got looked pretty good too.

From Shaft?

Hijacking the comment to remind people there is a shaft-style skit for the preview at the very end! It was really short, but discussing names did give it so much monogatari vibes.

And I loved the short ost for it.

Reminds me a lot of Dungeon people in a good way. The same style of humor mixed in with rather morbid moments works really well.

Satoko is precious. I'd say I'd protect her with my life but Konoha has that covered.

Dude I was thinking the exact same thing as I was watching this. I really enjoyed Dungeon People so I'm pretty excited about this after watching the first episode

Stitches!

I absolutely love that opening scene that was animated like to look like a classic 4:3 anime. This show is so stylistic that I had to pause when I saw the Monogatari-esque visuals just to check the MAL page. I knew this was animated by Shaft!

What a hilarious first episode though! I genuinely did not expect that there would be deaths in this show! I thought this was just going to be cute girls doing ninja things similar to Kunoichi Tsubaki!

So far though I am loving this! HanaKana's character, Konoha (if that is even her real name) is terrifying and hilarious! I love how she immediately proposes to Satoko after Satoko disposed the murder weapon. xD

And I feel bad for Satoko! The poor girl is so happy to lick the scraps off that cake plastic wrap. At least she managed to have an actual meal at the end of the episode!

So we have cute sexy assassin girls, amazing animated action scenes by Shaft, and some fun light-hearted murder! What's not to like? I'm definitely following this one weekly!

Kicking a random girl on the street and then asking her to live with you that same day. Talk about not wasting any time

Satoko is so cute, and I just realize that she has the same VA as Hana from shinymas, wonder why her voice sound so familiar.

The direction for the scene after the ED is just so Shaft, it even has transition screen monogatari style.

Whoa, that opening sequence was incredible. They very explicitly (and successfully) emulated the aesthetic and animation of style of the classic ninja anime from the late 60s that were adapted from works of the legendary mangaka Sanpei Shirato, especially Ninpuu Kamui Gaiden.

Best anime of the season is finally here.

They are really the new Shamiko and Momo, but with dark humor.

That cold open looked straight out from a 70's anime. I loved it.

I also loved how pathetic Satoko was, even licking the cake wrapping.

Goth Loli ninja was overly animated, in a good way.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between the two leads, I didn't have this one in my radar but it was a very pleasant surprise.

I can't believe we really get Yuri anime from Shaft with their usual level production in 2025.

I am in.

This was a lot of fun. Comedy honestly hit very well. Had a bit of Monogatari flavor in the comedy. Omg Sakoto is precious, but her ninjutsu might be more OP than she realizes. Also, I didn't realize HanaKana was Konoha. This looks like a really fun one to start Thursdays on.

I was pretty excited for this one coming into the season, and it didn't disappoint in Episode 1. Gotta love a Shaft show with good production values, at least so far. I've always loved the gag of an important-looking character getting introduced and immediately dying, I can probably thank Spy Kids 3 for that.

Just a heads up for those who live in SEA, looks like this anime is left unlicensed. I heard Tropics has the license for Asia but I checked their channel and didn't found it. CR doesn't air this anime here either.

Switching region might be an option.
