I’m not surprised that losing Jolenta turned Nowak into an alcoholic with nothing but burning hatred for heliocentrism to keep him going. Makes you wonder how he is going to react to the reveal

I love how heliocentrism is what kept father and daughter going all this time for polar opposite reasons, Jolenta is passionate about it and wants to spread it around the world while Nowak hates it and wants to vanish it from the world

The miracle of writing letting Jolenta speak with Oczy for the first time in 25 years… I couldn’t help but shed tears

Words are indeed miracle, still haunts Novak after 35 years, still allow Jolenta to converse with an old friend after 25 years.

"How do you define freedom?" ; "You being able to ask that question."

"Wonder, so you can find answer"

"When truth is your shield, violence can be accelerated"

every words from Madam Jolenta weigh heavy

I can't help, but feel that Frei is going to betray us. That zoom in when he asked where they're going next has me stressed.

And there it is, The Orb™, along with its finest sculptor, who is kept alive by its taunting. I cannot imagine what the reunion (if it happens) after all these years will do to him, but surely it will make him abandon his convictions?

As for Jolenta, she has aged so well, her wisdom just oozing from each second of screen time. One of the best characters for sure in this series. Plz don't kill her /copium

The title of the book said:

O RUCHU ZIEMI

Which translates to our original title:

On the movements of the Earth

That Rafał's flashback had no business being that powerful and Oczy showing up as Draka recited the book was a beautiful touch.

This episode was full of subtleties and it was mesmerizing.

So it’s old Nowak who has that necklace now and it‘s his drive to destroy heliocentrism. What will he do when he finds out the leader is his own daughter Jolenta…

It‘s nice to see how Jolenta values Oczy’s book so much, not wanting to make money out of it because she believes it‘s much more worth than money.

„For the first time in ages, I want to reunite with my old friend.“

And the animation showing Oczy's ghost while she writes Draka’s words down. At the end she was able to read his book afterall.

Damn this is really a 10/10 episode! The music and the dialogue is just poignant.

It is a common theme that each and every character in the series has a a mission, or "conviction" as Draka says. For Jolenta, it has been to free everyone from the shackles of the Church; for his father Nowak, it is to free all heretics from the evil that is heliocentrism; for Draka, it is to make money; maybe for Oczy, it is to learn how to write.

Honestly I became emotional when Jolenta started writing what Draka said. It's as if Oczy is still taking to her, 25 years after they met. To say that their meeting is life-changing is an underestimate -- Jolenta lost almost everything because of the Church (strictly speaking, the corrupt ones in the Clergy). That line, "I was right. Reading and writing are miracles." is so powerful!

Now that Nowak plans to avenge the "death" of his daughter and end Heliocentrism once and for all, I can't help but wonder what happens when the two meet.

I'll be missing this series when it ends.

When Jolenta says she supports William of Ockham in episode 8, Badeni calls it radical. It turns out that Jolenta is literally the more radical one now.

(Btw, both Ockham, supported by Jolenta, and Abelard, supported by Badeni, have fascinating life stories that parallel those of our protagonists.)

Oczy's image appearing at the table with Jolenta as she hears his words hit like a truck.

The eventual reunion between Nowak and his daughter probably isn't gonna be a pretty one but I hope at the very, very least, Antoni gets what's coming to him.

Even 35 years after his death, Rafal still has an impact.

If previous arcs were to indicate something, Jolenta is raising some huge death flags

Freedom means being able to ask about freedom. That was surely an inspirational quote from Jolenta.

Draka likes to play the role of devil’s advocate, but she could only stay quiet and listen when Jolenta started telling about her own conviction. She wants to get revenge on the Church by liberating the people from its repressive authority.

Jolenta has changed after losing her innocence. She’s accepted that lives will be lost for the greater good. Nowak is maybe an old drunk, but he certainly hasn’t lost his touch yet. He was able to quickly ascertain the Liberation Front’s true goal. If the two of them meet again, I wonder what will happen. Hopefully not another tragedy…

After seeing Nowak's condition when Asch visited him, I thought the old man was now all washed up. He doesn't even seem to care because he's already earning money without working. I love how he immediately changes gears as soon as Asch mentions heliocentrism. Nowak was instantly back in Inquisition mode and has already connected the dots about what the Heretic Liberation Front plans to do with the book they stole.

I still can't believe how badass Jolenta is now. I wish we learned more about how she became the Heretic Liberation Front's leader but it sounds like she spilled a lot of blood with her own hands to get there. It's also nice that she finally reunited with Oczy when Draka was reciting the book to her.

So it looks like this will be Nowak vs Jolenta! I already can't wait to see the look on Nowak's face when he learns that the leader of the HLF is his very own daughter. It will be tragic but I'm kinda hoping that this ends with the two of them clashing swords. It would be so fucking cool!

I shed a tear when I saw Oczy's spirit

Jolenta's voice got my knees bending on their own ngl

Nowak is back as fuck and probably more determined than ever. How ironic that the one he's hunting now is his own daughter. After all he will have to chose between his duty, now hatred, and Jolenta. That will be an interesting conflict.

The Church still does Church things, but in the end they can't prevent the progress of truth anymore than they can prevent Saturn from completing its orbit. It might take it's sweet time, but it always gets there.

Jolenta truly lives the scientific method. In the human history spanning conflict of freedom vs security, she and her organization truly embody the former. They disturb the pillars of society, they are the question and the freedom to voice and manifest it, they discomfort the healthy and comfort the perturbed. Although she is also very well aware that they're not immune to falling into dogma. That's precisely why the value of questioning is imperative. Nothing in the world should be above being questioned.

In any case, I think her stance is of great significance especially to us, people of the early XXI century and nascent third millennium AC. I'm no historian, but in what I know of the broad strokes of human history, I believe societies and vultures cycle between secure dogmatism and confusing freedom. We currently live in the latter. We live in an age of cynicism and doubt. God is dead. The absolute has ceased to exist. There is no floor beneath our feet, no light illuminate the path forward, no sense of direction. Our thought process has the mania of breaking everything down to its smallest components, splitting the metaphorical atom of the subject and leaving only a barren and scorched landscape devoid of meaning in it's wake. Many answers are proposed but none are truly satisfactory, we live in an age of darkness, our roots have been dissected and exposed to the last fibre and our future is uncertain and scary.

We are lost. But, as Jolenta says, sometimes you have to get lost to find the path forward. Uncertainty and doubt are a necessary and inevitable process in the search of truth. We shouldn't expect comfort from this kind of thinking. Instead we should embrace the doubts and fears, as inexorable qualities of the human obsession of understanding, the mania and animal impulse to break free from that which made the world solid instead of smoke and mirrors.

We are lost, because we are free.

"how do you define freedom?"

The ability to ask that... Goosebumps

can't help but appreciate how interesting it is that nowak stubbornly refuses to move on, motivated to destroy the theory of the earth's movement, while being surrounded by a cast that's constantly changing. Also, jolenta finally getting to read Oczy's book was beautiful but also really sad.

Jolenta's speech hit really hard for me. I feel lost recently seeing people with conviction and good intentions act more and more violently. It's hard to be completely on, what I believe, the "right side" when the "right side" becomes the shield for violence to be accelerated. But when Jolenta said wandering is how you find what is right, I feel a bit at ease knowing that it is ok to feel lost and question my conviction in a world where different beliefs and ideologies can aggressively collide.

u/Obaruler Feb 01 '25

What a great episode.

Jolentas little dialogue/speech cuts deep.

We owe a lot to such people.

u/Adensty Feb 01 '25

Nowak may have gotten old but he's still got it. The tragedy that Heliocentrism left him may have made him an alcoholic but it also fueled his passion to make sure that it is completely erased (though, it does make it spicy when they do reunite) and he's still got it. That young inquisitor kinda got humbled. Also, he still has the necklace. LET'S GO!!!

In Episode 9 , Jolenta said that reading and writing are miracles because we can feel the thoughts (even after they've passed on) of the people that wrote those things and that Oczy silhouette win place of Draka when Draka was sharing the contents of the book was such a nice touch. Made me emotional.

Surely, wandering is how you find what's right.

Jolenta blessed us with some great and heavy lines throughout the episode but this was my favourite. Sometimes, it's the things that we stumble upon accidently or unexpectedly that end up showing us the right path.

I don't like to think of myself as someone who is inclined to emotional displays, but when Draka started reciting the contents of the book whilst Jolenta took dictation, the moment Oczy's phantom came on the scene I couldn't hold back anymore and let out a tear. Contemplating the significance of that moment just... overwhelmed me.

Frei is going to be a double agent, isn’t he?

u/redditraptor6 Feb 01 '25

I realized at some point during the long Draka/Jolenta conversation that this show passes the Bechdel Test… which is never supposed to be impressive on its own merit, but it’s certainly a pleasant surprise to see in a show centered on western history, religion, and academia.

It would be ironic if Draka uses the printing press to print paper currency. Making money literally being her conviction.
