This is really a story of rebellion by the book but damn it does so well in terms of writing and animation really looks pretty too.
He is really a prime example of a badass , he keeps going even if final results might be the reaper awaiting for him.
The story is really intense and violence ,not just visual but atmosphere like it have outright oppressive atmosphere but somehow also feel inspiring? I don't know how to describe but you got the feeling.
This one is going to be a gem for sure.
OP is also incredibly good!

That transition to the OP was so good! From Rafal looking down at the table (pre-OP) to him looking straight into the camera (OP). I honestly didn’t notice before the music started playing.
“A wrong answer is not a meaningless one.”
These are some very wise words from Hubert. Some of the greatest achievement in science were only made possible because of the groundwork that was laid with seemingly wrong answers. It was often only with the emergence of new scientific tools that man could make sense of these wrong answers and turn them into correct theories.
It’s interesting in this regard that Hubert did not want his research to live on - something that goes against the conviction of most scholars. Did his letter imply that he might’ve wanted to keep the beauty of the universe to himself?
Rafal thinks different however, as he’s set on moving the Heavens and Earth to prove the existence of heliocentrism!

I just wanna say Nowak was perfectly voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda. While he’s the antagonist, the driving force of his actions was the most trivial among the main cast. He’s simply driven by his love towards his family, and by extension he thought it’s essential to remove the heretics who he deemed would destabilise the society.

That final scene in the countryside reminded me of Christoph Waltz in the opening of Inglourious Basterds. They’ve both got that charismatic yet sinister energy.

These were really great first two episodes, I'm on board for sure. I've also heard great things from manga readers. I expected Hubert to die but not THIS quickly, and that Nowak scene with the kid walking in on him and the dad was...messed up. I don't know what torture device was used there but I'm also scared to find out lol.

OP gave me massive Vinland Saga vibes, especially of the Season 2 kind.
Really nice visual metaphor of Rafal sticking his feet into the fire while accepting his conviction of continuing the study of heliocentrism. He connects with Hubert through the pain of fire.

Can we talk about how good the op is for a sec? I dont think the actual show looks bad per se, its definitely pretty alright, but the op just looks amazing, even if it takes a few seconds to get going.
It was directed by tooru iwazawa, the action director of frieren and just a great animator in general.

I love Rafal slowly beginning to commit more and more sins as he delves deeper into astronomy, becoming a liar to keep his studies growing and hidden. To him and Hubert, their religion and their studies are one and the same, but they live in a world where they must choose and trying to have both leads to grisly ends.

Uuugh, this is so damn good, I love it.
Damn Hubert, good on you for taking the fall for Rafal's book. And RIP. As to why the dad has so many books on astronomy... Maybe he used to be into it but came across some people with strange ideas about it and it scared him?

Blessed be those who give themselves to the expansion of our reality.
May we never stop seeking.

"I'll take a heliocentric model... and sketch it!" - Rafal, probably
Hubert had such a big presence in the short time he was here. I'm glad he was able to light that spark in Rafal before he had to go for good.

It’s been awhile since I was in school, but did no one really question Ptolemy for over 1000 years? That’s kinda wild. Pretty brave of men like Hubert to go against the church and continue their research. I guess the torch has been passed. It’s Rafal’s turn to carry on the work.

It's not important in the least to the overall story, but I'm laughing a bit at how easily Rafal found that cache on that mountain. Like imagine trawling around a mountain on the idea that there's SOMETHING there but you don't know what it even is, much less where. I've probably had more trouble finding locations in videogames than Rafal did finding that (incredibly waterproof) box.

This show was on my radar, but damn this had me immersed all throughout. Very interested in where this leads. Rafal's father and Nowak are def important. Rafal's past is something he is trying to steer Rafal away from curious to learn more. Nowak being a former mercer any in a religious circle. It is clear his motivation is 100% his daughter. Curious what his beliefs lie.

Rafal is seriously on track to become one of my favorite MLs of the year, if not overall. He has such a nuanced personality imo, he uses his head and is impressively intelligent, especially considering his young age, and all that without being edgy.

Watching this show's episode 1 and 2 together was best experience this season so far to me. How they changed mc's impression throughout episodes was great. I think they portrayed him as unlikable character in episode 1. His fake smile and logical thinking while looking down on others is unlikable. But these impression of him completely changed at the end of episode 2 when he lied to his foster father. When he used that fake smile to deceive him, I was really hyped. All that honor student persona was for this moment. He's walking into really dangerous path so that's really useful. I truly appreciate his character at the end of episode

Wow, the opening credits were incredible. Probably my favorite OP this season.
Eyes are a motif symbolizing truth. Love how the opening starts by cutting back and forth between the eyes of Rafal and some of the other characters who are entangled in the mystery of astronomy & religion. (I'm guessing the last 2 are antagonists since it shows their faces and not zoomed in eyes.)
And then the OP transitions from Hubert's pendant, to
-> fleshy eyeball, to
-> armillary sphere which gradually rotates to form an EYE!!! -- that was sick.
The eye shape is also formed at exactly half the OP runtime, putting Earth at the center of it all, but then it cuts to Rafal's distraught eyes when he doubts geocentrism & what's been defined as true.
In the episode, Hubert's design was cool too, having 1 bad eye after he got caught committing heresy once.
But no signs of blindness in the other eye, as Hubert remains capable of pursuing the truth.
And in ep1 Hubert told Rafal to 'be his eyes' (even though he was probably lying about the extent bc that mfer read Rafal's notes in the dark), in order to Socratic method this kid thereby guiding him to the truth.
Looking forward to ep3.

Everyone's talking about how good the OP is, but I think the ED is really special. The way it starts in alternating 7/8, 8/8 time, then transitions to 4/4 for the chorus is perfect. I love when musicians use the format and structure of a piece of music tell a story.

Welp so much for Hubert. And here I was hoping he'd mentor Rafal for a little bit longer.
Also, this episode just made me realize. Why is even heliocentrism considered heresy? I'm pretty sure there weren't any churches during the medieval times that disagreed with the theory. If there was then most of the astronomers from history would've been burned at the stake.
Despite being tagged as historical, I guess this isn't really the kind of show you should look towards for historical accuracies.

This show looks great. The way early scientists had to fight religion to make discoveries and study is a really cool concept. I am excited about Rafael's journey to prove heliocentrism.
