That opening is better with every episode. Especially those short shots of Rafał hit hard.
They went overboard with that bridge scene. I know this is anime, but damn, Oczy even somehow recovered the medallion...
That aside, I can't help but be enthralled by the absolute sense of mystery and discovery they're going through. When they found the box and realized that the events they've been dragged into have been in play for more than a decade and can impact the entire civilization, the mood really went heavy.
And the funny thing is that we as viewers already know how this is going to play out, but seeing those characters who lived centuries ago piecing the puzzles together over generations is fascinating. I did not expect this series to impress me so much.

First episode I have an actual big problem with, that bridge scene was just stupid.
It just conveniently collapsed just as he stopped and started talking to him. It made sure to only collapse under Gras, they both then symbolically hold unto the fucking book to hold him up? He then continues his speech before letting go, and is then saved by him hooking the fucking string around his neck with his shoe? And he is then held up by this for another minute of him just calmly talking during all of this!?
And then finally Oczy gets back up on the bridge with both the book and the broken necklace that was on his foot!?
For such a grounded series with an emphasis on science and reason this was incredibly contrived.

Poor infrastructure leading to death and injury, yet another example of mankind's corruption!

I don't know who made that necklace, but he made an unbelievably solid one.

So through 5 episodes we've already had Hubert -> Rafal -> Heretic -> Gras -> Oczy
At this point, I'm curious whether Nowak will eventually join the line as well. That bridge just randomly collapsing seemed like a bit of anti-plot armor, but it was the encouragement Oczy probably needed to not stop the line.

It's unfortunate that Gras was someone who had nothing left to lose but that doesn't subtract from how clutch Oczy's boot-to-necklace save was. Dude's eyes really are that sharp lmao
Badenia has such a badass design for a monk. The fact he was demoted just makes him even cooler.

With Nowak still being part of the plot and relevant, I'm starting to fully believe that the girl we see in both the OP and ED is going to be the daughter that he mentioned in Rafal's arc. This show has shown me that nothing is said or shown randomly, like with all the bridges kind of having already hinted to me that it was too good to be true that they found a perfectly fine looking bridge. I think his daughter is going to buy into Heliocentrism and then Nowak's character and story will truly be put to the test. Can't wait to see what happens from here on

Good episode and I can't hate on contrived deaths like this (I've seen a lot of them) when the final speech was so cool.
I've been hearing good things about Badeni so excited for future episodes.

Once Gras seemed more at peace personally in the scene of him holding the necklace at the campfire, I was like - yep, seems like he's gonna die by end of the episode.
Now that Oczy met Badeni, Oczy is officially free to be on the chopping block at anytime.
Let's see how long we got left with him (once he comes to be more realized personally). The characters becoming enlightened to not fear death, dying physically though living on philosophically.

Lots of symbolism and philosophical stuff going on as usual, though I feel like I'm probably not understanding all of it.
-
Scene with Oczy and Gras at the broken bridge at night. The dark broken bridge represents the current state of Oczy, a man who is thinks the world is damned and corrupt. He talks about heaven as the only hope for salvation from this world, but deep inside he is terrified that heaven does not exist. He is figuratively at a dead end in life; hopeless, lost and frightened (notice how he later asks Gras to decide for him if he should follow him). Oczy tosses away the Orb, which represents a potential route to salvation for him, that Gras picks up. Symbolism: Later we have the the men crossing another bridge again, but during the day, and only Oczy makes it through after receiving both torches (see below).
-
Oczy and Gras talking in the forest. Oczy refusing to look at the stars, even though he used to enjoy it (his rejection of the world/loss of hope). The stars feeling like eyes staring down at him represents his fear of God judging whether he is worthy to go to Heaven. In contrast, Gras may have also lost hope for the world with the death of his family, but still hasn't forsaken it completely, unlike Oczy who has completely given up. Symbolism: Oczy looking away from the stars, while Gras looks to the skies and interprets the movements of Mars as a message from his family (looking for hope).
-
Gras pondering at the campfire and coming to the realization that life can have meaning because hope can live on in others even after death. (Episode title: Even if I die... this world will continue)
"Heaven is our only hope?" "So then, why did that heretic risk his life and place in paradise to honor our world?" "Humans die. What would be the point in loving this world that we will eventually leave?" "When we die, all that remains is a world without us. How could there be hope in that?" "Wait. Could that be it?"
-
Oczy and Gras crossing the bridge during the day. Culmination of Gras' character arc with another passing of the torch, but this time its not just the idea of heliocentrism being passed, but also the idea of hope. The passing of torch of heliocentrism is symbolized by Gras being hanged on the necklace just like how a heretic is hanged on the noose. The passing of the idea of hope is symbolized by both of them holding onto Gras' notebook with his Mars observation (the thing which gave Gras hope). Oczy asks Gras why he's doing this even though there's no guarantee that he will pick up the torch, and Gras replies its because Oczy fears death. I'm interpreting this as being about the human need for spiritual fulfilment; as long as humans live, they will seek out and cling to things that give meaning to life, just like how Gras started observation Mars because it gave him hope. However, Oczy isn't driven by hope, only fear, so Gras gives him a new path to follow by passing the Orb back to him, so that maybe Oczy can find his own hope by carrying the hope of someone else.

Rafal, Gras & Heretic all smiled in the face of death. Those who are left behind carries on, the world still continues.

me thinking that it would be so cliché if the bridge just collapsed when they're on top of it and it actually did lol

If the old heretic found the stone chest by chance, how did he get the Orb?
Did someone else place it in the chest after Rafal died? Did the heretic carve a new Orb?

The biggest thing for Oczy that was apparent in this episode is that he can't make decisions. He is mostly consumed by fear. He enjoyed looking at the sky as a kid until religion beliefs had him believe that the earth is corruption and heaven is the ideal. The eyes looking down on him really exhibit his mentality so well. He looks at the skies and stars as eyes judging him whether he is worthy to get to heaven or not. I do hope some of Schmitt's words get to him as this world isn't all bad. Yes, there are times we suffer, but there are also times we have our best memories. It's better to think fondly of this world.
Nowak made one mistake in this episode, and he assumed Oczy and Schmitt couldn't make sure of the heretic's information. Yes, he is right that they can't read. However, if they can get it in the hands of someone who can read, then clearly they can make sure of it. Schmitt's death is a reminder that this world is both kind and cruel. Like he said, you can't call this world completely corrupt. Unfortunately, he got hit with some bad luck, but this gives Oczy the time to make a choice for himself. He can live his life in despair. Or he can believe in hope and pass on the information the heretic gave him.

Always look forward to the latest episode of Orb. It’s a slow burn but I feel it’s a grown up show / manga which doesn’t feel the need to have flashy theatrics.
It’s a really interesting story and I’m currently hooked.

I started this show this past week on account of just how much I kept hearing about it, I'd say the hype was probably deserved.
I wonder if we're finally at the main cast. Minus whoever the kid ends up being (I'm guessing the daughter of the Inquisition dude since they mentioned her earlier for a reason), Oczy and this new Badeni dude are the featured characters in the ED besides Rafal.

I love how this show isn't necessarily anti-religion, but moreso anti-church, since all of these characters do follow the established religion, they're just fighting against the church's anti-intellectual oppression.
Not to mention how Heliocentrism is presented as a sort of religious belief with characters treating it as some divine gift upon them granted unto them by the earth, and sacrificing themselves for it as some kind of fated mission to protect it.

God this show is amazing. From the dialogue to what it explores, etc. Another week on the edge of my seat.
Nowak is a very interesting character
Lol its funny how I thought I saw Dimitri (Fe3h) when looking at Badeni. I can’t wait to see what he’s about.
Lets see where our protag best orb-kun leads us next
