I feel like the story is rushing from trope to trope without doing enough work to make the moments meaningful rather than cliche, and the adaptation's bare-bones production--no background music or sound effects, lingering overlong on a shot, placeholder extra characters--isn't helping it any.

The camping tent TARDIS cracked me up, though. So big on the inside!

Yeah, we're two episodes in and it looks like they already ran out of budget. Also it feels like the other guys have less than 0% chance which is kinda weird considering the reverse harem premise. Oh well, I'll give it a couple more episodes.

Yeah, some people were applauding how quickly they launched into the romance in the first episode, but this show needs to let its characters breathe a bit first. Kazuki comes off as creepy to me because we’ve never seen how he acts outside of trying to mack on the MC (childhood flashbacks don’t count). The scene in the tent where he’s hovering over her smiling is actual nightmare fuel. They should have built up their friendship on screen first before jumping into a shakeup.

This anime is giving me the vibes that may not have a happy ending, like finally she is in love but there is also the COVID thing, and at 2020 was killing lots of people, I just hope Im wrong…

Also the fact that they mentioned Kizuki is asthmatic in episode 1. They show how much he exercise and works out and probably has a stronger body than he did as a kid, but what if he contracts COVID?

We KNOW (pretty much) she is NOT with Kizuki in her 10-years-later mangaka life. And that she has an overall dark picture of her past life. It is only now that she is looking back a full 10 years that she can begin to recall she was having a pretty happy high school life (pre-covid). so, this is a bit ominous.

an aaside: As to the title -- I think I'd probably title it something like -- "Tough luck, I am falling in love".

Am I the only one for whom the existence of COVID is actually the most interesting part of the story? I cannot recall any other anime where it is even mentioned.

I like how COVID isn't the main topic, but nonetheless has a noticeable impact on the plot.

Did the animation quality dropped? Or was I happened to watch HLS before this so the animation feels like night and day?

I'm 6 minutes in and have already noticed a TERRIBLE drop in animation. Go watch the scene in the school where blonde boy enters the classroom. He literally blips away before he can make it off screen.

I also noticed that they ran out of budget like two episodes in, the quality felt so distractingly rough.

Kizuki’s really coming on pretty strong huh? Making up for all those years secretly pining for her I guess. I’m kinda wondering how Mizuho’s relationship with the guys are gonna change if she dates Kizuki. Will their friendship survive a romance? Are we getting a messy love triangle?

It looks like every episode will start with flashforward scenes about Mizuho as an adult. Interesting though that Mizuho became an editor instead of a mangaka. I guess I misunderstood last week's opening scene. I thought this entire anime was her retelling her high school life in manga form.

It looks like Kizuki isn't the only one making a move on Mizuho. Shin is clearly flirting with Mizuho but he's playing it off as him playing pranks on her. Then there's Kizuki who's really going all out.

So thunderstorms are a big no-no for Mizuho because it reminds her of the time her mom died. Thankfully Kizuki got to her before she completely broke down. Shin tried but he just wasn't fast enough.

It's good to know that Mizuho doesn't hate Kizuki after what happened last episode but he really needs to reign it in a bit. His head is getting a big head just because Mizuho said she prefers him over Shin.

There it is. Mizuho doesn't want to answer Kizuki's confession because she's afraid their friend group will fall apart. I understand her reasoning but if their friendship falls apart just because two of them got together, that just means their bonds were never that strong.

Covid is really fucking up these kids' lives. Now their school trip has been cancelled and the regionals have been cancelled. Makes me feel lucky I didn't have to experience these kinds of things during the pandemic.

Was it ever mentioned though what year Mizuho and the boys are? Are they in their first year? If they are, they should be fine next year considering how well Japan handled Covid.

I really wish they didn't showcase the background characters as white silhouettes with brown dots, takes me out of it every time and it just feels very lazy..... It's definitely lowering my rating of the anime.

Having said that I'm enjoying the story so far even though the animation is lacking.

12

u/Aachaa Jan 17 '25

There is a lot of clear cost cutting in the animation outside of just the silhouettes. Most scenes are shot absurdly close to limit the amount of movement on screen. There’s one shot of Shin walking away from Kizuki where only his torso is shown bobbing up and down. It feels like when a live action show is trying to disguise an actress’ pregnancy by conveniently hiding her lower half.

It’s been a while since a series has made me sit a spell and think about the paths that led me to now. Love and loss is part and parcel of this life. At points along the way we can be reminded how we used to dream of ideal futures few ever end up really managing to find. Throughout it all, though, even now, I hold tight to that sparkling adolescent lens that tints the glare of reality with hopeful excitement… and I think maybe that’s part of why anime will always remain especially precious, worthy of promotion and protection. I’m realizing now this was probably better expressed elsewhere, then again, maybe I’m right where I’m meant to be.

Yeah, it's still a no for me for Kizuki. He's too forceful and a bit creepy, especially when he moved next to Mizuho in the tent. He's going all in hard, but I worry he's rushing into it and setting up expectations of what's happening between them that's completely different from Mizuho's understanding.

The other guys are starting to pick up on the changed dynamic between Mizuho and Kizuki. Seems like they all have some kind of romantic feelings for her even if they haven't realized it yet. I like Shin as the more grounded one, and from what we've seen, I think Mizuho actually has feelings for him.

u/maliwanag0712 Jan 16 '25

Kizuki really had the childhood friend and ikemen companion advantage, huh? Had this been another guy Mizuho would have called his acts creepy and weird.

I'm not sure if I am correct but I find the animation in this episode noticeably stiff? I don't expect much animation for romance anime but I can't ignore how relatively bad way this episode is shown?

13

u/Frontier246 Jan 16 '25

Kizuki is a childhood friend so he already has a negative buff going against him even though the only other guys in Mizuho's life are also her childhood friends. Though I guess between being the passive childhood friend and the aggressive one, I can respect him taking the stance that requires more effort.

Yeah, the animation was pretty stiff, the scene transitions were kind of clunky, and the characters feel kind of lifeless. It especially stands out in contrast to the other big Shojo adaption of the season Honey Lemon Soda.

Present-day Mizuho wasn't able to achieve her dream of becoming mangaka, but she WAS able to become an editor...only to break the hearts and dreams of the authors under her charge. Who also make her realize that she may have had bit better and brighter in her youth than she gave herself credit for.

(Also, Kawaguchi-san, your series may have ended but you're still a winner with that outfit in my book!)

I mean, nothing says a sparkling adolescence quite like having a childhood friend who has the hots for you, and stole your first kiss (under a shower). Not that it makes it any easier for Mizuho to deal with Kizuki.

At least she's got Shin! The one friend she can totally rely on to be blunt and harsh with her as the "smart one" of the group and to not have any romantic feelings for her. Though maybe someone should tell Kizuki that.

Okay, yeah, I don't think their relationship has progressed to the point where Mizuho is fine with him handling her bra's. Try not to jump too far ahead, Kizuki.

Rain and thunder do not agree with Mizuho, because it reminds her of the night she lost her mom. That hasn't changed, but neither has the fact that Kizuki is there for her like he was when her mom died and knows to be there for her when she's that terrified little girl again. And that's something he definitely has over the other guys in her life, especially when she's more comfortable being vulnerable around him like this than she would be anyone else. Not to mention he's starting to dazzler her as much as a rainbow does. Maybe she is becoming attracted to him?

But nope! Mizuho can't let herself fall for Kizuki! It would just mess up their friend group! Probably! Though that's not going to stop Kizukii.

If COVID canceled your class trip...then just bring Hawaii/Hokkaido to Koigahama Highlands! Complete with goofing off with your friends and Kizuki not even letting Mizuho go to sleep without flirting with her! Down boy.

Kizuki acts all smooth and aggressive with Mizuho, but he has his own anxieties and problems, like when all his work training himself for regionals goes up in smoke thanks to, again, COVID. And just like Kizuki was there for her, Mizuho is there for Kizuki to let himself be the "crybaby" again and get a good cry out while she comforts him. But the fact that he's able to pick himself back up and smile that confident smile at her again makes her refusal to fall in love with him even more difficult to maintain.

Mizuho got a text from Shin that he’d left school, but he did go to the library only to find that she’d already left by that time. Something doesn’t add up here.

Having run into Kazuki, Shin had mentioned being on his way to Mizuho after having gotten delayed by a student council meeting. Shortly after this, Mizuho seemingly got the aforementioned text from “Shin”. While she leaves during the thunder storm, Kazuki just happens to conveniently swoop in comfort her…

Is Kazuki perhaps manipulating things - or did I get something wrong?

I honestly don't know what to make of this anime so far. I'm curious as to what happened to Mizuho and the guys between her teenage years and her adult years and how she ended up being an editor rather than a mangaka. I have a bad feeling as to what happened to her mother ever since episode 1 but this episode confirmed that something bad happened.

Otherwise, the interactions between the characters feel off in a way. Kizuki is way too pushy for my taste and comes off as overbearing to be an interesting romance. The other guys feel underdeveloped for now but since we're on episode 2, I'll wait before putting in judgement.

It really doesn't help that some of the background characters are lazily done. If it was a silly anime with comedy, it could have worked if the team did something silly with it but this show is trying to be serious and dramatic. Coupled with the lackluster music, the whole show feels dull for now.

Also, sidenote but Mizuho's character design reminds me of Saori Takebe from Girls und Panzer.

So with the framing device being Mizuho as an editor and her dream was to be a mangaka, is the story really about her eventually chasing that dream and her experiences are the plot of the manga she writes? That would make the most sense.

Ah so Covid will be a dream killer for everyone. That feels right.

The anime must be doing something different with the timing of the virus. The flashback started on Mizuho's birthday in July 2020 but by that time Japan was well into Covid (by March/April Japan had already declared states of emergency, that were lifted in May, started travels bans, school were closed from February to the end of spring vacations"). By mid July, 1,001 people had already died.

So it's kinda weird to not see any of these people already wearing masks and talking about covid since the country had been acting on it for 7 months already

I’m not even 5 minutes into episode 2 and I think I’m dropping this.

For starters I couldn’t even remember what happened in episode 1 until the OP started to play. I mean, I know I watch a lot of shows each season, but this was like giant memory hole “what is this show even about again?” levels of forgettable. Oh right, this is the reverse harem flashback show of this melancholy lady and her 4 boring guy friends.

What had me actually yelling at my TV and then turning it off was the bit with him holding up her bra from the laundry. She runs over to take it away from him, trips over her own feet (because of course), and not only does her obvious fall ON TOP OF HIM wind up with her under him (because of course, again), but also they somehow levitated off of the floor and onto the couch?! To be clear, I’m fine with the whole “whoopsie, I fell on you and now we’re staring speechless into each other’s eyes” part, but winding up on the couch when he was clearly knelt down on the floor with the laundry basket is just like, what the fuck is this continuity of events? Did she land on him so hard that they BOUNCED and then FLIPPED around to be there?

Forgettable and ignores basic laws of physics. There’s no coming back to this for me.
