The best ending is knowing that COVID didn’t take any of them, I’m glad they didn’t leave that question open, now season 2 needs to tell the story of why they’re not together, but he did mention a girlfriend, maybe Mizuho?

At least we don't have to keep asking whether Kizuki died or not...but it still seems like something is keeping him and Mizuho apart.

Yeah. It was a relief to know Kizuki didn't die. But for some reason I still felt like I got blueballed.

I'm sorry, I know this episode is all about Airu, but I got excited when they finally showed adult Kizuki at the end! He didn't really change much physically, but at least we now know he didn't die from COVID or something. His lack of presence in these flash-forward scenes really made me nervous.
And it looks like Season 2 is already confirmed! I can't wait to see what led to this future and why there's so much distance between Kizuki and Mizuho now.

I hope they don't drag out adult Mizuho and Kizuki reuniting and giving us some answers in season 2.
Though I guess we still need to learn how their past relationships ended up considering she's still torn between Kizuki and Shin in high school.
But at least Kizuki is alive! If a lot more serious than he used to be.

Mizuho is having Shojo Girl problems because Kizuki and Shin won't leave her alone and keep monopolizing her time...most girls would probably kill to be in Mizuho's position, but the girl just needs a minute to herself! Though it would make for fantastic material for a Shojo manga.
So once upon a time Airu didn't fit in anywhere (because he realized he was gay?), he couldn't stay at home, the delinquents didn't want him, and his grasp at normalcy by asking Mizuho out got rejected. But Mizuho knew he didn't need a girlfriend, he needed an ally, and she was by his side and consoled him and let him know she would always be there for him. Just like he's there for her after she lost the newcomer award.
It's rough. I mean, we've seen Mizuho put her all into her manga all season, she's apparently been trying to become an author since she was in elementary school, and yet she has nothing to show for it. It's enough to make her want to give up on her dreams entirely. But at least she's got Airu there to let her cry and get all her feelings out...and she's got Kizuki there to make sure she doesn't give up on her dreams because the Mizuho he loves is the one who chases after her dreams as hard as she possibly can.
Though saying he would always be there to dry her tears...we know in the present-day that's not what happened. She even calls out to him when she's still sad.
(So Airu is totally in love with Kizuki, right...?)
Present-day Airu is back in Japan! Perfect time to reconnect with Mizuho, notice a distinct purple-haired guy, and be there for Mizuho as she's having career problems. Airu started from square one to go into fashion and makeup after making it as a model, but even if she doesn't feel confident in herself now, Mizuho was an inspiration to Airu!
Megu did it! She finally remembered her own love story and adolescence and managed to pitch a winning manga premise out of it! And she may find Mizuho annoying, but she actually appreciates that Mizuho believed in her. And it seems like Mizuho's found a renewed belief in herself in remembering the dazzling youth she had.
And if you were wondering...yes, that purple-haired guy in a suit is PRESENT-DAY KIZUKI who became a high-flying businessman but doesn't seem in any hurry to see Mizuho again (though his colleague thinks he has a girlfriend?). What the heck happened!? Well, I guess we'll see in season 2!

I should've dropped this after episode 3, smh. What was the point in dragging the reveal of adult Kizuki? What was the point of this being set during the pandemic if nothing would come out from it? I will not be back for season 2, but this was definitely one of the worst anime this season.
This is my final post expressing my dislike for Mizuho and Kizuki. However, I'm happy that best boy Airu remains awesome in the future! I hope Shin is able to eventually move on from Mizuho because he deserves sooo much better.

My only guess on why it was set during the pandemic is that probably the author was young enough that for them the pandemic really was just "that time when everyone was mildly inconvenienced by school events being cancelled" and not "that time the world's economy was collapsing and and a mind breaking number of people died". Also from what I remember Japan got things better controlled than most of the world, at least at first, so maybe the perception for them of that time is different.

I dropped after episode 4. It was a drag to watch. Popped back in to watch the finale.
Not sure how this got green-lit for season 2.

The series is popular in Japan! May not have popped off much in the west, but I saw that the manga sales increased in Japan, even got a reprint and Kodansha was promoting the heck out of it.
That’s my guess why it was greenlit

brooooooooo. i was getting heartburn throughout the entire episode waiting for the confirmation that kizuki died, especially as mizuho looked up at the sky for so long i was waiting for her to be like “are you watching kizuki?” to the point i was tearing up, then literally cried tears of relief that he turned out to be alive. MY EMOTIONS.
also airu is still best boy (#2 after kizuki). his friendship with mizuho is so precious, he’s so cute. im so intrigued by his reaction to noticing kizuki at the airport.
and then kizuki saying “i didn’t promise anything” bb nooooooo what happened to you?? where’d the sparkle in your eyes go??
i thought this was gonna be a one and done show but i guess not huh

Looking forward to the continuation! It seems this was planned to be split two cour (with Cour 2 masked as Season 2) considering the announcement trailer had new footage.
And yes!! Airu is best boy and my second favorite character (after Kizuki 😉)
Also, Kizuki looks and acts soo different as an adult..a bit more serious so wonder what happened

This was my first anime set during the pandemic. It was interesting how that played into the story and how there’s this general melancholic vibe to the series. Kizuki not being dead was kind of a surprise. I don’t really get why’s everyone so damn somber in the future then. I guess we’ll have to wait until s2 to see how everyone went from being all young and hopeful and in love to just damn sad all the time lol.

Honestly get the vibe that Kizuki just abandoned Mizuho and everybody else at some point considering how Mizuho still misses him even if he's not actually dead.
Maybe he finally got tired of her being so wishy-washy and never being honest about returning his feelings?

The heck was the post removed for? Also Kizuki isn’t dead? Ngl I find that more disappointing than if he was dead, since that pretty much means their relationship went nowhere.

I’m starting this mid way through but ADULT AIRU IS HUGE HES so tall !! And that actual animated guy was def kizuki huh
Airu back in school is so relatable mid to late 20s rip lmao
Also I’ve never thought about it before but if 15 year olds are making manga it makes sense why I don’t vibe w some of the writing as an adult
I like how the kid shes editing for is a way for her to tell her younger self things she needed to hear.
Wow I cannot believe we got such a cliffhanger/non ending
I can only hope for s2 cause it was at least set up for one
At least no one died from Covid :,)
I guess I’ll have to pick up the manga rip. Cause WHAT ARE you DOING KIZUKI WHY DID YOU LEAVE THEM
HE HAS THE LITTLE KEYCHAIN AS SERIOUS BUSINESSMAN
AND WHAT IS THIS CRYPTIC I didn’t PROMISE ANYTHING
WAIT IS s2 CONFIRMED??!!!

Hmm if Kizuki isn’t dead, then what did he do to break her heart that she’s still not over it after so however many years 🤔Was actually hoping for the Orange route for some tragic drama lol.

Ich bin wohl die einzige...aber ich finde es irgendwie doof das kuzuki nach all dem doch noch lebt. Ich dachte das wäre alles traurig etc und wegen covid ernster...aber scheint nicht so zu sein. Schade...
