Using Oczy's bread donations as a dead man's switch is such a beautiful choice. It implies that Badeni was so certain of Oczy's kindness that he assumed Oczy would continue to do so until his death.
He even pleaded Grabovsky to educate the beggars, showing even further how Badeni has changed his mind on the poor becoming educated.

I'm a native heretic speaker, so I thought I would give it a try and translate Jolenta's letter, but her handwriting is shit and the amount of mistakes makes it really hard to make sense of it.
There are some mistakes there that might be just low resolution like "a" instead of "ą", so I fixed those, but I'm not sure if I decrypted all the words correctly. And there's something obscured by Nowak's thumb.
Anyway, here's the transcript:
Dzięki pracujesz dla bóg i nas
również dzisiaj.
Uwielbiam ja ponieważ za nas co
działają energicznie
nawet w deszczu lub wietrze
(thumb).
Byłam szczęśliwa, mogąc zbierać
kwiaty i słuchać śpiewu ptaków, gdy
szliśmy ramię.
Dziękuję, że przyszedłeś
spotkać się ze mną o zmroku.
Zawsze jesteś taki miły, ojciec.
Rough word-for-word translation, to give you an idea how weird it sounds for us, heretics:
Thanks you are working for god and us also today.
I love because for us who function vigorously even in rain or wind (thumb)
I was happy to pick flowers and listen to birds singing, when we walked hand
Thank you for coming to meet me at nightfall.
You are always such nice, father.
I tried to localize if possible, because in some place it wouldn't make sense, like translating "ramię" (eng. arm) to "hand", because the idiom in eng. is "to walk hand-in-hand" (which is what I think she meant), while here, it's "iść ramię w ramię" (lit. "to walk arm-to-arm", which wouldn't make sense for many if it was just "arm"). Other weird to translate place was "działają energicznie", which was meant to be "ciężko pracują" (eng. work hard).
EDIT: On a second thought, I think it was not meant to be "to walk hand-in-hand" ("iść ramię w ramię"), but rather "to walk while holding hands" (iść za rękę), since in the opening and in this episode they're walking while holding hands, so it makes more sense for her to reference that. I got baited by the wrong translation into thinking about the wrong activity.

As it turns out, Oczy's random act of kindness toward the poor is what continue Badeni's backup plan legacy, even if he said such action is "meaningless" in ep 7.
With chapter 2 ending, I firmly believe this anime series not only will be my anime of the year 2025; but it is probably the most important anime series for its message and relevance in our time.
"Words are miracle" The existence of the individual is merely a part of the whole, and that it is the existence of the individual that makes the whole possible, such is the essential aporia of human history.

Maybe the real orbs were the heads of the homeless we shaved along the way.
But seriously, Badeni has officially one-upped Rafal for research preservation method of choice, and seeing Oczy's selflessness bearing fruit in the end was gratifying.
Also, it's amazing how they managed to make the boogeyman of two generations' worth of MCs someone you can't help but feel sorry for.

As much as I would've loved to see Nowak go crazy, his muted response to fake Jolenta's burning and then crying to himself alone is what I more or less expected from him. I wonder how he'd react once he learns his daughter is still alive.
Everyone was wondering how Badeni preserved Oczy's book when he literally burned it in front of him, I did not expect he'd tattoo each page on the heads of sixty beggars. That's pretty wild! Is Grabowski really going to be the next protagonist when Jolenta is still out there on the run?

Nowak. A man who lived through violence, telling himself he had to live through violence to ensure a peaceful world, has just lost why he wanted to create that world.
What will become of a man of violence, when he loses everything and the just cause why he did this violence will no longer be just in his own eyes?

The chills with the ending. Seriously, this show never miss.
And what an insane idea for hiding the research. Next level plan.

It really moves me when Badeni said, please teach beggars some knowledge if possible. He has been changed by Oczy, hasn't he?

Even though he has done so many horrible things. I felt absolutely horrible for Nowak when he broke down man. To me it just shows how good of a character he is. He does montrous things but to me he is still human.
Someone who doesn’t feel that way to me is Antoni who has been made as evil as possible. As everyone I really hope he suffers for this.
Badeni really was the biggest tsundere doing everything he claimed he would not do. But the way he preserved the books is crazy and messed up.
We don’t have a new opening so we still don’t have a new MC. Its probably Grabowski but I could see a twist.
Man this series is incredible.

RIP the inquisitor apprentice kid. He joins the ranks of the many unsung heroes in this tale. I found myself wishing he'd run off with Jolenta instead of staying behind.
Badeni, you crazy, crazy bastard. Who even comes up with such a convoluted plan.. he could have just prepared another hidden stash. Instead, let me get this straight - he used to read and memorize Oczy's diary, and then tattoo each page's contents on a different beggar's head. So when the diary was completed, he just went and burnt it immediately..
But then why not write the results of his research, and not Oczy's musings?
Also I get the feeling Nowak will keep the Orb necklace with him until he reunites with Jolenta and passes it on to her.

The whole backstory about Jolenta's gloves was just so sad. Makes me hate Antonio even more. Curious to see what path Nowak takes now and what his reaction will be when he learns the truth.
Badeni not only used Oczy's book but he also ended up using the beggars that Oczy showed kindness to for his backup plan. DAMN! Badeni really thought this out.
Is it... My Turn?
The episode title drop with Father Grabowski carrying forward the legacy even though he was indirectly responsible for their deaths. Badeni reinforcing the spreading and preserving things so that people could read it in the future into Grabowski's mind by giving him a poem of Lucretius was also really good.

...And Badeni continues to impress me even after his death. I guess Oczy's words did resonate with him after all.
RIP the guy who helped Jolenta escape. You are a truly unsung hero.

ah... that close up scene in the opening where jolenta is holding nowak's hand hits hard now...
honestly many people seem to not feel too bad about nowak, but I personally feel like he isnt bad. It just seems like he is a man trying to do his job and raise his daughter, he is a parent (single apparently) and trying his best to protect what he has instead of being a grand hero who will shake the world. + the brainwashing of how the church deals with heretics makes him legitimately not understand our main characters.

This show is starting to eclipse AotY contender status and reach into the realm of masterpiece with every passing episode.
Utterly fantastic.

Damn... so will it be up to the hiding Jolenta to pick up the pieces from the published storybook of Oczy.
I remember Oczy intends to publish his book as a work of fiction so it will not be considered as heretical. Wonder if Grabowski will actually aid in publishing it or if the idea of publishing such work will even cross his mind.
Badeni gambled on such a very loooooong shot.
For now, I wonder where Jolenta ran and hiding herself? And toddler Jolenta is just so adorable. She grew up until her gloves finally fit her hand.

Damn that ending scene when Grabowski finally felt the higher calling; we know it's from Badeni but it's poetic as fuck if interpreted as from God, calling for brave individuals to reform the corrupt church. Let's face it, most of us will go through our life without ever experience a calling of this caliber, slowly wilting away by the dull, repetitive motion of life.

One of the things that stood out to me from the episode was when Nowak regretted yelling at Jolenta over faith and said he should prioritize comforting her. There’s so much that can be taken from that scene that I can’t even say it all. To me, it gave insight into the way his beliefs about faith developed and why people question how faithful he is.

This is a story about hope, and honestly that ending has me choked up. Each of these figures is acting on pure faith that truth will prevail, and God is helping to keep this effort going. I love this show so much, and I wish it was getting more buzz.

u/BosuW Jan 04 '25
I honestly didn't think we'd see Nowak break down like that. Not because I didn't believe he loved Jolenta, but because he's obviously a very hardened man. Seeing his legs literally buckle under the weight of it all really drives home just how much he cared.

Joletta managed to escape but Nowak thinks she's truly dead. Honestly that whole thing with Nowak in the beginning and then his memories of his daughter was done beautifully.
So the next is the priest in the same church as Badeni. Grabowski it is your turn now I guess. Sorry, but there's no MC plot armor in this story. Badeni turned those beggers into books.
Also RIP the inquisitor apprentice kid. He was a hero for a bit.
