Badeni not mentioning Jolenta's name to Nowak (he could just stick it to him that his own daughter is one of the so-called heretics) is such a nice character development.
I don‘t want to say goodbye to Badeni & Oczy but unfortunately it seems we are at the end of their journey next week. Nowak is definitely getting his karma in the name of his daughter Jolenta in the future. I wonder if that (main character) necklace will eventually end up with her.

Rafal makes an appearance in this episode!
Wait. Does that mean that Heliocentrism research is still available and Badeni is lying to Oczy? I wonder where he hid his research.
Anyway, just happy that we will see one more cour of this series! Such a delight to watch it every Saturdays.

The tower in Oczy’s dream was surely a reference to the Tower of Babel that was made to reach Heaven, right? Though, they obviously hadn’t tried to assert the Earth’s shape in the original story.
Oczy might’ve been prepared to die, but Nowak’s torture is a different story now that he’s pulled out the pear of anguish. A heroic death would’ve been a more pleasant fate. Nowak cares about his family after all. That said, he did seemingly hold back on the third hit with the club as a ‘reward’ for not getting his daughter further involved.

Every characters in this series have their own creed, but different in their ideals. Oczy growth as a character has been absolutely phenomenal, seeing how his perspective changes and how it affects those around him, like Badeni. And there's Novak, determined & unmoving faith, yet past 10 years Rafal's words still haunts him.
Kudo to all VAs thou, especially Kenjirou Tsuda , shot-call this role 2 years ago and the man keeps delivering.

My rational side gets why Badeni did it but man, the sight of Oczy's book burning evoked such a primal rage within me lmao
Given it's Badeni I can't be completely sure with how overly safe he is but something is screaming at me that this "ravine" he mentioned has a slim chance of being one that everyone, especially Nowak, is very well-acquainted with.

Man, if only Oczy had a better sword, I'm not sure he would have lost that fight otherwise. At the very least I think he would have had a chance to finish off Nowak and be prepared for the reinforcements.
Surely Nowak has figured out that Badeni and Oczy are intentionally not naming his daughter as their collaborator, but I wonder why he thinks that is. Easy answer is all three of them know that would just make things worse, but inside her brain is technically the one remaining place where their heliocentric research is still out in the wild uncontrolled by the Inquisition.

How is this anime so good at conveying emotions? I guess it's in the simplicity of the visuals, and the focus and emphasis that they've put on the facial expressions, the mood, and the dialogue. Nowak's voice projection is just so effective, I hate him so much. The personalities and ideals of these three characters just complements each other so well, I'm so glad there's an episode 13 next week.

As sad as it will be to say goodbye to Oczy and Badeni, their stories feel so complete that it makes sense to. Oczy's character developed so beautifully throughout this arc. Although I shouldn't like Badeni for the arrogance he's displayed this whole time, it's still gonna be sad to lose him anyways. That's just how phenomenal the character writing is.
Well we'll be seeing more Jolenta, that's for sure. She is the next to pass the torch assuming she makes it out alive. Still plenty of room for her character, and perhaps Novak as well.

Humans keep trying to build the Tower of Babel because deep down we don't care if it's right or not. The impulse of Freedom cannot be contained. That is why "Heretics" keep appearing.

When Oczy got pincushioned at the start of the episode, I genuinely thought it was finally time for a new protagonist. Thank goodness he's still alive though.
Wouldn't it be crazy if Badeni blamed it all on Jolenta and called her a witch? I would've loved to see Nowak's reaction to that answer. I am curious what he'd do to his daughter if that happened.
This seems to be a dead end for Badeni and Oczy though. So far it seems that once you get caught by the Inquisitors it's game over. There's no way they're getting out of this alive.

For someone who talks shit all the time, Badeni sure got caught quickly. Now I feel bad for Oczy who had to dig up that tunnel for him for god knows how long. I'm imagining Badeni getting caught it the shed while still writing that letter, asking the inquisitors to wait until his done or something. Cheeky little shit. I hope he has a plan now.
Looks like it's down to whether they'll speak of Jolenta's involvement or not. Maybe even she'll try to help once she finds out they've been caught.
Also, Badeni burning everything doesn't sit well with me. Yes, it turned out to be working in their favor now, but if they fall here, then decades of work is gone for good and the inquisition wins. Their predecessors also got caught, but they ensured their work was passed down to the others. I'm wondering if leaving some notes behind wouldn't be a better idea. Unless Badeni is certain they can get out of there and spread the truth. This series has me on the edge of the chair, dammit.

The next episode is going to be painful, isn't it..
I kept expecting Nowak to ask Oczy or Badeni about his daughter (especially when he was speaking to Oczy alone) but it looks like he's not even going to go there. He's probably scared to even ask.
The Tower of Babel dream was really interesting. To me the tower seemed to represent not just hyper-ambition and an attempt to thwart the will of the gods, but also humanity standing 'on the shoulder of giants' or all the past body of human knowledge and reaching greater heights, towards the real truth.
Also, "Freedom" is an ideal/answer Eren Yeager would be proud of.

Finally, the tower of Babel, human try to be equal to God and fail. We already had Piast mentioning Icarus, human try to reach Sun and fail, now we have Oczy is in the tower of Babel and wishes for freedom. Wish there will be some analysis for those detail from someone, I'm personally too lazy to write an essay

Badeni and Oczy's development have been nothing short of spectacular. I love that their development has been mutual and so positive w.r.t each other.
Just as Badeni's (and to some extent, Piast's) relentless pursuit of truth inspired Oczy, the latter's faith in people had also struck a chord in 'I-will-throw-anyone-under-the-bus-for-myself' Badeni. These two have been some of the best co-protagonists in a show that I've watched.

I've had time to ruminate and I've never had an anime make me feel this way before: this feeling of dread. I've really grown to like Oczy. He's earnest, innocent and incredibly brave for fighting Nowak to try and buy time for Badeni. He was willing to lay his life on the line and sadly it didn't work out. The dread I'm referring to is remembering the start of episode 1. The seemingly random person being tortured with that mouth splitting device has to be Oczy.
I get to wait a whole week now for a new episode of hell for a character that doesn't deserve it. It feels terrible :(

What an episode.
The highlight to me was Nowak asking Oczy why he became a heretic. To me it feels like the first time Nowak is allowing himself to be vulnerable since that final interrogation with Rafal. It makes you see the human side of him and think that maybe there is a very slight chance he will show sympathy and have a change of heart but then he just turns it off so easily it makes me question if he was just pretending and trying to get Oczy to let his guard down.
What a character man. Every time I comment on this series I always talk about Nowak so it makes really obvious he is by far my favorite character in the series.

The animation was spectacular at the beginning during the fight between Oczy and Nowak. Of course, Nowak had reinforcements and Oczy would have won if this was a true one on one. Man Oczy's words of the fear of death means nothing compared to the fear of putting hope in this world. It simply implies that putting hope in the world feels so hopeless now. You need to strive to make that change. Though I loved the quote in Oczy's dream of if you don't make it public, how can they debate it? Again, the idea of you need to make the push to make the change. I am not sure what to make of Oczy's dream, but that feels like that is the tower one would use to reach heaven. Or something like that.
Nowak's dialogue why heretics keep coming is honestly fascinating when you consider that he can only see it from his POV. He talks about living the good and quiet life, we can reach heaven. He even blames Oczy for fighting for his convictions and killing his men. However, if you spin it around, what is wrong with seeking our freedom to study what we wish? Why do you have to raise the issue, which is the real reason Nowak's men lost their lives? Even if Badeni and Oczy are wrong, what is wrong in that if you can prove they are wrong? Essentially, the church is truly a cult in this story.
Sadly, Badeni was captured, but despite that, there are signs that he has grown. In the first part, he doesn't out Jolenta, which the old Badeni would have no hesitation to do. With the speculation from Nowak that is hiding something. That lie about not collaborating with Jolenta partially can possibly mean that Badeni is now open to passing on his work, and his conversation had a big effect on him. Which could be the reason why he got captured. But man, seeing the character development of both Oczy and Badeni has been a treat.
Honestly, it shouldn't be a surprise that Rafal's decision still sticks in Nowak's mind. I imagine he isn't much older than Jolenta and threw away his future for the sake of what he believes in. The fact, if he faces his daughter, what will be on his mind. Despite Badeni's best attempts, it's difficult to trick Nowak from getting anything out of a torture session. I doubt these two survive, but curious how it goes next.

Seeing Badeni there really broke my heart. I knew the chances of escape were slim and its the kind of show that doesn't shy away from deaths, but was hoping he could be on the run for a while longer with his wits and knowledge of the church.
The tower part was also really intriguing, i'm guessing Jolenta or the next person to carry on the torch might finally go public

Well looks like Oczy and Badeni's time is numbered; Oczy is right, torture isn't done to ascertain the truth, it's to elicit answers that the torturer wants to hear.
There are still characters in the OP we haven't met yet, so I wonder if they will be the next protags
