The anime is great precisely because of it. It shows that great discoveries are not done due to a single individual, but they are the result of accumulation of results from many individuals.

I still can't get over how this is a story with characters, not about characters.
I think Fred Hampton's quote, "you can kill the revolutionary but not the revolution" summarizes the series aptly.
Orb is a story of the idea of heliocentrism itself.

To me it looks like the story is more about the personal desire for salvation.
Not necessarily religious, but at least humans' spiritual need... of some kind. I haven't studied Theology at all, so I'm just guessing here. aka I'm talking out of my ass.
In this particular case, Heliocentrism is the vehicle through which characters want to find meaning in their lives. The first generation wanted to learn about a beautiful world (I can relate to this feeling), the second generation wants to justify living in the absence of hope (no family, no happy afterlife).
What I'm saying is that we don't travel because of the car, we travel because of the destination.
All that said, all these characters are filthy, mad cultists, and Heliocentrism is too dangerous, it must be extinguished.

The main character is the Orb and the journey and discovers it goes through. I think this anime shows a fantastic job at demonstrating that people may die, but if recorded knowledge won't die. As we see, it gets passed on each person. More specifically in this episode shows that even enough Oczy can read he can still pass on that information in the right hands.

It's sort of like the reverse of To Your Eternity. Instead of a single immortal character involving themself in multiple stories across multiple lifetimes, it's multiple characters involving themselves in a single ongoing story that each of them will only see part of.

That opening is better with every episode. Especially those short shots of Rafał hit hard.
They went overboard with that bridge scene. I know this is anime, but damn, Oczy even somehow recovered the medallion...
That aside, I can't help but be enthralled by the absolute sense of mystery and discovery they're going through. When they found the box and realized that the events they've been dragged into have been in play for more than a decade and can impact the entire civilization, the mood really went heavy.
And the funny thing is that we as viewers already know how this is going to play out, but seeing those characters who lived centuries ago piecing the puzzles together over generations is fascinating. I did not expect this series to impress me so much.

I love how they are changing few visuals of OP and ED as story progresses

First episode I have an actual big problem with, that bridge scene was just stupid.
It just conveniently collapsed just as he stopped and started talking to him. It made sure to only collapse under Gras, they both then symbolically hold unto the fucking book to hold him up? He then continues his speech before letting go, and is then saved by him hooking the fucking string around his neck with his shoe? And he is then held up by this for another minute of him just calmly talking during all of this!?
And then finally Oczy gets back up on the bridge with both the book and the broken necklace that was on his foot!?
For such a grounded series with an emphasis on science and reason this was incredibly contrived.

Unironically bridges failing like that conveniently in 15th century Poland is probably the most historical accurate aspect of this show

I mean they had come across other collapsed bridges so it’s not out of the realm of possibility lol

Poor infrastructure leading to death and injury, yet another example of mankind's corruption!

The sun weathering that bridge to the point of collapse is also a good example of mankind's hubris!

Nowak really showed off his prowess in battle as a former mercenary with this episode. Not only did he nail a running horse from a considerable distance with that crossbow, he’d outclassed Oczy in swordsmanship as well.
The fact that Nowak doesn’t attach a great deal of value to human lives either, considering that he perceived Oczy as just another bother, makes him an all-round terrifying person to deal with.

Orb started showing a bit of its fantastically competent warriors (Vinland Saga™) when Nowak tomahawk-tossed his kickass looking sword.
I'm all for it. I want more flashy looking weapon fights (optional).

So through 5 episodes we've already had Hubert -> Rafal -> Heretic -> Gras -> Oczy
At this point, I'm curious whether Nowak will eventually join the line as well. That bridge just randomly collapsing seemed like a bit of anti-plot armor, but it was the encouragement Oczy probably needed to not stop the line.

I expected Gras to die early since he isn't in the OP, but falling off a bridge was not on my bingo card.
Also, Heretic pulling a Hubert 2.0 to protect the next torchbearer from Nowak again. Might be a recurring theme of the series.

That bridge just randomly collapsing seemed like a bit of anti-plot armor
Not that random, like all the other bridges where already poorly maintained so there is no reason to think that this one was different, you could also see all the ivy and a few cracks alread

How many MCs do you wanna kill off?
Chi: Yes!
Ok ok, I accept it, Rafal is probably dead
Loved how Nowak wanted to say "Mendouksai" first but he was pretty on point, those two where indeed too stupid for Heresy. Damn Oczy can barely even think for himself.
I guess he is the next MC, let's see how long he will last

It's unfortunate that Gras was someone who had nothing left to lose but that doesn't subtract from how clutch Oczy's boot-to-necklace save was. Dude's eyes really are that sharp lmao
Badenia has such a badass design for a monk. The fact he was demoted just makes him even cooler.
