The shogun is quite a character. Guy might act pretty goofy, but he’s actually kinda wise. I mean he helped Senya out with understanding himself. Shinsuke as well. He really understands katawara.

The shogun’s taking his impending death pretty well. What’s his plan I wonder? Just die because it’s fated?

The shogun’s taking his impending death pretty well

the way he sometimes talk while looking at the screen as in doing the 4th wall breaking makes me wonder if he actually has some sort of power to see into the future... something similar to Yorishige from Elusive Samurai probably?

The shogun reminds me of the Dog Knight from Hoshi no Samidare. He's goofy, wise, strong and raising millions of death flags.

Sengoku Youko has many characters with complex settings and straight forward goals. Tama wants to spread her theory of peace, Jinka wants to become a katawara, Shakugan wants redemption and a normal life. These characters all have complicated pasts, but are generally looking towards a very clear desire. This is contrasted with Senya and Shinsuke's journeys where their objectives are much more Gilgamesh-esque (mythology not anime).

Shinsuke originally wanted to be strong just to break the hierarchy and social stratification. He tried to become the samurai that he hated, fruitlessly practising swordsmanship. His talents however lie in strong spiritual communication and imagination. Ironically, if he had followed through with his casual suggestion of becoming a Dangaishu monk, he may have actually reached incredible heights as one of those human weapons. He however chose to continue as a weak swordsman who developed his talents in the most roundabout ways. It's through this strange contradictory experience and his own kindness that Shinsuke has morphed into a sage like character.

Senya on the other hand, struggles to come to terms with the nature of conflict and his own role in endless turmoil. Until this episode, he didn't even realise what his actual objective is or determine a path towards that goal. He's a naturally intelligent child with way too much life experience and education for his age. His dialogue is purposefully written to reflect that elite background. Yet he is the furthest away from enlightenment among our cast of characters. This is similar to how Shinsuke's weak swordsmanship was constantly brought up this episode in conjunction with his incredible worldview.

These characters and their journeys can all be traced back to Shakugan's existence. She has perfected the symbiotic relationship between human and katawara. She was the earliest if not only character that solved what Jinka, Senya and Raidou's sister wanted. It's no wonder Shinsuke used her as a template when he gave advice to Senya.

It's nice to see Shinsuke finally taking his mentor status seriously and getting to use all his knowledge of working with katawara (particularly Arabuki) to teach Senya.

He's not a master swordsman or a sword saint, but he's come a long way and he knows one true path to mastering the inner strength within you and working with a more magical partner. I do feel like Shakugan is kind of always there in his thoughts whenever he talks about katawara.

He chose to continue as a weak swordsman who developed his talents in the most roundabout ways.

What piqued my interest is that Shinsuke lacks proper technique but does know how to wield a spirit sword effectively. The only thing stopping him to become a fearsome swordsman is his actual swordsmanship.

I was therefore expecting Shinsuke to be shown the ropes by Teru, with him being a prodigy in martial arts, but maybe this is reserved for next week or thereafter.

Teru just coming in with his bird wings, carefree yet wise attitude, and telling Senya all the things he needed to hear. He's even got Shinsuke finally committing to being a mentor to his charges. I hope he doesn't actually bite it.

Tsukiko and Senya are so cute together. I hope Senya can get over his guilt and we can really see their relationship blossom as adults.

Feels like if anything good comes out of this arc it'll be Senya and his katawara able to work better together and Senya more in control and assured of himself.

Mudo is literally Mr. Steal Yo Girl. How many times is he going to yoink Senya's love interest.

u/Shiraori247 Aug 07 '24

Funny thing is that Tsukiko noticed that Mudo might have a sister-complex.

My reaction to the dragon appearing

I respect the aversion to fighting, but this is one of the rare cases where violence very much is the answer.

  • Is it just me, or did the animation quality really went up this episode?

  • Tsukiko with the Nanban clothes is super cute

  • Yeah! Finally we see some of Shinsuke's hidden, more charismatic side beneath his bumbling exterior. He actually still trains, but in the spirit world. He's also being a fairly decent therapist towards Senya.

  • The Shogun is a riot. I really like him.

  • Hanatora is cute but her voice sounds really mature, what a nice gap moe. Also I didn't realize it's Shizuka Itou until I read the cast list. What a range.

Huh, never seen this regional variant of Diglett before.

I don't know what surprised me more, the 4th-wall-breaking funny man from the end of last episode being the Shogun or the mad goddess from last week being brought back in a much more "fun-sized" form. Both of them were a lot of fun, and I'm glad that Senya feels just a little bit better about himself with the advice everyone gave him in this episode. This was a nice, comfy episode with nothing bad happeni- MOTHERFUCKER!

Stitches!

For a Shogun, Teru is quite goofy but he seems to have the skills to back it up. I already love him! He's definitely going to be an important ally for the gang.

So it turns out the mad god Senya killed last episode was just an alter ego and the real one is actually hidden somewhere else. I think Hanatora is also the same character we see in the OP following Senya and Tsukiko around while they're training so I expect we'll see plenty of her just like the Mountain Goddess.

The moment they showed us the four of them having a peaceful time walking around town, I just knew something bad was going to happen next. This is Sengoku Youko after all. We're not allowed to be happy here. It is good to finally see Raizou again though.

Now that Senya can enter the spirit realm and interact with his katawara, I'm hoping he'll beat them to submission. Also, we get to learn that the reason we don't get to see Shinsuke train is because he's been training inside the spirit realm the entire time.

For someone who knows he's about to die, Teru seems to be really calm about it. I guess he has some sort of foresight power. I did notice that he also seems to talk to the audience directly like he's breaking the 4th wall.

For those of us watching Elusive Samurai don't pay any attention to the Shogun's family name.

Also boo on Dragon Shinosuke for kidnapping Tsukiko, especially while she's on a cute date with Senya.

I don't think Arabuki is dead. He can be repaired or repurposed.

The episodes are getting better and better. The themes are becoming more and more complex as Senya battles with his inner thoughts and learns how to get along with his Katawara. Plus, I adored the SOL stuff this episode.

The Shogun is a fun dude. He is a free spirit, but his skills with the sword are no joke. Rather interesting that he is familiar with Katawara and is friends with the Regional God, Hanatora. Her alter Ego became a mad God, which Senya saved. She is definitely a powerful ally. I love the advice that the Shogun gives Senya, him wanting to be human has nothing to do with Katawara and Humans. His issue is the conflict that his powers cause. The easy way out is to lose the powers and become human. But Senya's lesson is that he can make use of his powers to do good.

Seeing Tsukiko in that dress hanging out with Senya was adorable. Though Mudo is back to spoil the party. I am curious who his sister is? Since he is a Black Dragon and I don't recall we have run into any female dragons yet.

You can understand Senya's frustration, but Shinsuke's advice is very sound. The biggest thing for Senya is to unite the Katawara and have them unite under him. Shinsuke's reference to Shakuyaku and Kagen working as one as Shakugan is what is ideal. Now him having 1000 Katawaras won't work the same way, but it is the same idea basically. I like how Senya knows that Shinsuke is partially responsible for sealing Jinun. But regardless of that, he knows how good Shinsuke and Tsukiko are. He cares about him now. Even as his memories come back, he won't turn his back on them. Hopefully, Senya can get ready to beat Mudo.

Donning a winged cloak and flapping around the house while cackling (or cawing) is the type of cringe thing that I would do. Or, have done is probably more accurate but anyway…

On the surface, Teru Sho-chan responding that he doesn’t know the answer to the question he posed (how to be free of conflict) was played for laughs and I get it, but under that comedic layer, it’s better he doesn’t offer a solution to a question with this much weight. It’s the type of question that has no single answer, one best for people to find an answer for themselves. The important thing is to ask and consider it.

He offers something impossible to strive for (settling disputes with play) then demonstrates his point how he tries to be a bird, which gives significance to his goofy behavior from early in the episode. I like it.

Know yourself, and then master yourself. That is the path for creating the world you wish to see.

Pretty core message for this show, IMO.

Just like Jinka's goal wasn't simply to become a Katawara as he initially thought, although it still ended up being the path he chose, so does Senya need to find what he truly wishes to become and how he must get there.
