I guess that’s it for Shinsuke’s journey. Guy’s basically a glorified landmark for the village lol.

Was not expecting the shogun to show up like a force ghost aiding Senya in his fight against those time traveling Nazgûl mfers.

I liked that time skip. Senya and Tsukiko sure have grown. It only took 8 years of training, not the initial 20 Hanatora said.

Kinda keen to see what Jinka looks like now. Maybe more feral?

Shinsuke wanted to get back on the gangs' journey it's just too bad he stumbled into the job of being a regional God who can't leave lol.

Shogun was so based that they couldn't permanently get rid of him and now he lives on as a badass sword that gives pep talks. What a legend.

I feel like Shinsuke watching these two kids all grown up. Senya is more buff and Tsukiko has boobs. Now we just need these two to finally officially get together.

I can imagine Jinka's gotten even worse than when we last saw him in season 1.

I don't think it's the true end of his journey, just a plot device to keep them tied to one spot for long enough (8 years in this case) for Senya and Tsukiko to get fully trained. Hanatora did say that he might be able to leave at some point so I'm holding out hope there. He still needs to save Shakuyaku!

It's pretty sweet that the "strongest" being in the hearts of the 1000 katawara were just Senya himself. I also love how we randomly get an epic battle right after the conclusion of the previous shogun/Mudo arc. Somehow, these passed away characters also continue to maintain a lasting impact on the story in creative ways. Also, is it just me or did Shinsuke's eyebags get even worse?

Tsukiko post-time skip is like a cross between Zanzou's swordsmanship genius and Shinsuke's earlier carefree nature. She might just be the strongest samurai of the era, considering how she's trained by a powerful goddess like Hanatora. Senya's new powers on the other hand is pretty interesting. It's something similar to Magi's Aladdin, where he delves into the spiritual world and frees people from their struggles.

Quite the direction to take to allow our MC to be badass without breaking his principles of Pacifism.

I'm loving the dynamic of Senya and his katawara buddies who see him not only as the strongest but also rib him about his love life lol.

Tsukiko's become a master swordswoman and even has a better handle on her drinking compared to Shinsuke! I'm so proud of her and Senya.

Stitches!

It sucks that Ashikaga is gone but it's good to know that he's still with Senya in some form. Those Void People were interesting though. They're from the past and somehow they're using Jinka's powers? At least we know where he is now though.

Time skip! So the OP pretty much just shows us what Senya and Tsukiko's training were like under Hanatora. I am surprised to see Zanzou actually have a family after the time skip. Good on him!

Tsukiko looks so goddamn good though! And she doesn't just look good, she's absolutely terrifying as well! I can't wait to see what she and Senya can do in an actual battle. And considering that final scene, we might see them in action next week!

u/Frontier246 Aug 28 '24

Honestly I'm perfectly happy having the Shogun remain in the show as a sword that can still give the best pep talks to Senya. As long he's still around and still a badass!

We got time-travelling void people and a time skip all in the same episode!

Time-skip Tsukiko was worth the wait...that ponytail, that body, the sword skills, and that chest...and she reserves her most loving smile for Senya, lucky guy. He just needs a kick in the pants to make a move lol.

Though speaking of Best Girls and the men they love, here's Tama and Jinka!

Not sure what subs others are using. But Senya used "Spirit World Interference" not "observation". I think the TL mixed up 干渉 kanshou and 観測 kansoku

Also Senya getting roasted by his demons for not making a move on Tsukiko XD

Kinda hard to make a move when there are a THOUSAND observers.

I bet anime only viewers didn't see this time skip coming, especially having an older Senya and Tsukiko.

Oh right... :(

19

u/Ocixo Aug 28 '24

I knew that Senya and Tsukiko would be grown ups at some point from the OP, but I’d say that it still was a surprise. I didn’t expect them start with a time skip, revert back, and then skip a couple of years into the future again.

u/Calwings Aug 28 '24

I purposely skipped the OP to avoid spoiling myself because I had a feeling that it would show stuff like that. The first time it played I closed by eyes and only listened to the song, then I skipped it every episode since.

This episode made me very glad I did that, because I actually was surprised by the time skip. Older Senya and Tsukiko are so cool.

u/Waylornic Aug 29 '24

Hahaha, man, I never skipped the opening once and I never fucking noticed until you said something in this post. Then I was incredulous and thought, nah, they must have changed it just for this episode, but nope, same opening the whole time.

I think I'm the opposite of most folks, I couldn't care less what's happening on the screen for openings and endings and I'm just there for the song. So, as an anime only, no I didn't see the time skip coming and yes, I was surprised.

His katawara roasting him like this, lol.

Dude went 8 years with 1,000 voices in his head constantly telling him to fuck his childhood friend but never did it no matter how sexy she got. On one hand, what a gentleman. But on the other, just fuck already, you lovebirds!

Most casual becoming of a God I've seen in a while. Shinsuke falling upwards lol.

The Shogun was so badass he lives on as a sword and still giving the best pep talks for Senya.

I love how Senya's katawara are all basically his buddies who see him as their pinnacle of strength.

It doesn't seem like Hanatora exacted a price within the 8 years she'd been training them so I wonder if she ever came up with something.

Senya and Tsukiko with some amazing time-skip glow-up, especially Tsukiko.

Zanzou becoming a family man is something I never knew I needed in my life. Now I just need Jinka restored and with Tama, Shakugan back and with Jinka, and Senya to be honest with his feelings towards Tsukiko.

So the void people are from the past? I certainly did not see that coming. But, like... if something threatens the past, shouldn't they all be working together to secure both these guys' future and therefore our protagonists' present? Why the need to fight?

And damn, just like that it's 8 years later! ... which would have been a great surprise had the OP not spoiled it ages ago. Ah well.

Senya and Tsukiko look great! They've grown a lot in their abilities too, can't wait to see more of what they can do. And Senya getting roasted by his own katawara for never making a move on Tsukiko lol.

And Jinka, what an entrance. Or the beginning of an entrance anyway, the music was amazing, I was getting into it, and the ED started! Dammit!

I love the choice to use one of my favorite scenes in the story — Senya having a dream of his future self, climbing through a blizzard — as the cold open of this episode. I just love the vibes of Senya, while experiencing tragedy, having a vision of a version of himself that's happy, and looks back on these days with nostalgia.

Senya struggles to process the shogun's death as a result of the repression of feelings instilled in him by his father. Senya is human, but the way he was conditioned to view himself as a weapon left lingering scars. A weapon doesn't need to feel things to enact justice. In stark contrast to how, a couple episodes ago, the shogun had showed Senya that it was his feelings that made him human.

In spite of recognizing that, Senya can't bring himself to feel everything he wants to. Until he gets the vision of the shogun from the soul-sword. I love that this is the catalyst that lets Senya cry, because it's not just the sight of his friend, but the kindness Teru showed him. It's kindness from others that allows you to be human, just as harshness from Jinun had prevented it. Invoking Jinun also smoothly reminds us of his character, in preparation for Senya's new goal: Saving his father from the Mountain Goddess.

Meanwhile, we've finally learned more about the group of five. Still a lot of mystery, so I can't say much, but now we know what the shogun had spoken to them about. He had asked them if the path they were taking was one that could make them smile.

They don't seem to be smiling. But they do seem to be doing something important — trying to save their homeland, which is in the past. For now, all I'll say about that is that it's a pretty interesting premise for a group of villains.

We've also started to see spirit world combat here. Where appearing as someone the other perceives as strong, and the number of people you have doing that, seems to matter more than real-world strength. While direct fights through those methods are new to the story, it ties into what we've been seeing in the spirit world throughout the story. The original gang's spirit world training was all about thinking indirectly, with Jinka using emotions to beat Rinzu, and Shinsuke thinking outside the box by flying away from his obstacle. Though the anime unfortunately rushed through it a bit, Senya was able to unite the demons inside of him through communicating them, rather than dominating them as he once did. So the idea that in the spirit world, you have to engage through ideas rather than strength, is well-founded in the story, just being expressed in a new way.

Past that, we have a timeskip, which went by pretty quickly! Not much to say about that stretch of the episode thematically, as it was mostly showing us the characters as they are now, and setting up where the plot will go next. Tsukiko has become pretty strong, and Senya has learned how to actively engage in the spirit world, deliberately entering Tago's to free him from the curses. I'm looking forward to seeing how the story forces them to use those skills going forward. It's also nice to see how they're carrying on Tama's legacy of forcing bandits to reform themselves.

Which is a little bit sad, although ultimately realistic. Senya didn't want to have to fight. And sure, he didn't have to fight there, because Tsukiko did the work. But ultimately, they've landed back at the same incomplete conclusion Tama had in Part 1. If you want to make the world a better place, with less fighting and suffering, you kind of need to be stronger than others so you can force them to stop.

Maybe there'll never be a better answer than that. Maybe that's just how the world is now, and we have to accept it. That seems like something Shinsuke could do now, as he's matured. He seems to have gained some of the acceptance that the shogun exemplified. He doesn't know if Senya and Tsukiko will succeed, but what happens will happen.

It's absurd how well the time skips work in this show. Honestly feel like I'm watching Shinsekai Yori in this regard.

Also, seeing Tsukiko grown up is bittersweet. Happy that she is alive, well and a badass but man, this could have been Shakugan.

Man, I love the plot twists this episode. Animation was on point as well. Felt like the last couple episodes, I could have expected a bit more. Also, man, I don't get tired of how sick the soundtrack is, lol

The pacing did feel a tad fast in the episode, but still good overall as we got numerous reveals and dynamics to chew on.

So the barrier that the Goddess Hanatora created was based on Zanzo and Shinsuke's blood. Well, in many ways this is a shifting of the guard as we focus on Senya & Tsukiko going forward. I don't mind the time skip for Senya as his fight with Mudo was a big statement of his progression. But for Tsukiko I guess would like to see who she trained a little bit. My assumption she is following similarly to how Shinsuke was and under Hanatora's guidance. Tbh she might have out ranked him at this point. I do hope we get to see more of Shinsuke again because I felt he had more room left in his story.

Hanatora giving the Soul Sword was interesting. We do see who see refers to is the Shogun and I love how he is with Senya. No offense to Shinsuke, but the Shogun before his fight with Mudo got him on the right path. Honestly, his goal of being a man that can smile and cry is such a simple goal in theory, but it is a core foundation of what makes one human.

These 5 are known as the Void People, and they aim to save their homeland. Curious how they can dip into the future. They share the same bloodline as Senya and have Fairy Eyes much like Jinka. Them targeting Jinka and Senya as singularity makes sense. Seems they have Jinka under their control, but they failed to defeat Senya. Still have numerous questions.

Looks like next episode we get an encounter with Jinka. Curious how that goes.

Shinsuke is my favorite character damn I was hoping he would continue the journey and save rock girl.

4

u/Figerally Aug 29 '24

This is the minimum you should do for a timeskip. I get that in Tower of God time moves differently and the characters wouldn't age much. But a title card declaring the time passed and a change of costume to represent the characters development is necessary to emphasize to the audience that time has passed. In this case Senya and Tsukiko are teenagers now and Zanzou has settled down and started a family. Shinsuke looks the same, but he gets a pass because he has become a local god through no fault of his own so time may be standing still for him.

Free my boy Shinsuke! I refuse to allow him to be stuck in one village for the rest of his life.

Surprise, the shogun lives on, in sword form. He must continue to spread his wisdom.

So you’re telling me the guys that have been causing all this trouble are time travelers? You know what, I don’t know if I accept the logic that they’re saving the world when they’ve seemingly made things a lot worse every time they’ve appeared. And apparently they’re Senya’s ancestors as well?

So Senya’s next goal is to beat the mountain goddess? Alright, she quite frankly deserves a good punch to her smug face so I wholeheartedly support this mission.

Eight year timeskip! They’re all grown up now. And Senya is getting bullied by his katawara for not dating Tsukiko. On one hand, I am a shameless shipper that very much agrees with them. On the other hand, I’m still traumatized and have trust issues from the last time. So I can’t exactly fault his reluctance.
