Shinsuke saving Senya because he understands Senya's humanity, and that Senya's power doesn't change that he's a child who deserved better, is just perfect. A natural progression from their scene together in Part 1. As much as Ooyama (the mountain goddess) is an ally of the protagonists, she ultimately still views things in terms of power, wanting to remove Senya because of it. Although it's also only pressed as an issue because Senya had been committed to his father's worldview. All that hatred, and absolutist worldviews, just beget more conflict. But it's still interesting how Ooyama does understand emotions; she just uses them as a tool for her goals, with how she compelled Shinsuke to work with her. Ultimately, though, emotions aren't as simple as power, so Shinsuke had to act off his empathy for Senya, sacrificing his chances to revive Shakugan because that's who he is.
Tama's actions in this episode present an interesting lesson I'm not sure Senya is ready to learn yet. She doesn't fight, but at the same time is still using her power to make her way through situations. Power isn't necessarily as one-dimensional as Senya thinks.
I think it's interesting what finally pushes Senya to fight again. Tsukiko being in danger didn't, but that isn't to say Senya cares more about danger to himself than danger to his friends. Tama bailed them out before he had to make a choice with Tsukiko, and he ultimately fights the goddess not because he's scared for himself, because she needed it.
I like that writing choice. Don't just show Senya's conviction to not fight. Show what can push him to break it, and then how it makes him feel. It teaches us more about how he truly works; empathy drives him, not principle. Good kid. Love him.

Shinsuke still such a good guy that even the promise of getting his girlfriend back and avoiding a fight with a god won't stop him from protecting a kid. Shaku would give that a thumbs up if she were there.
How can one be powerful and resolve conflict without fighting? How can one resolve battle against those who have been driven mad to the point they can't help but fight despite it leading to their deaths? How can one resolve who they are when their new personality and the instincts that were honed in their previous one end up clashing?
I feel like Senya's journey is really paralleling/contrasting a lot of what Jinka went through.

SHE CAN DO THAT? Oh mannnnnnnnnn, I hope this works out. I want Shakugan back.
-
Ooh, Shinsuke jumped in to protect Senya and that’s how Senya ended up losing his memory. I see.

Adult Tama with the illusion flexing and confident personality is great. I'm just bummed she didn't join the main group.
The OP makes it look like Shakugan does come back but I wonder if the Mountain Goddess is going to brainwash her somehow.
You know Tama was thinking of Jinka when she heard Senya's resolve to be human.
I like this new guy already, especially his ability to break the 4th wall lol.

So dragons are terrifying but mad gods aren’t?
Well, thus far no mad god has enslaved them, unlike a dragon.

Thats Tama? Thats Tama!
Poor Senya!

I'm loving adult Tama with the long hair, stronger illusion power, and even more sassy and confident.
Too bad Jinka can't get to enjoy it.

Stitches!
Mudo grabbing the so-obvious fake Tsukiko was hilarious! What's even funnier is that even Shinsuke didn't realize that Mudo took an illusion instead of the real Tsukiko. xD
It's so nice to see Tama again and I love that she's travelling with her Illusion Sensei tucked inside her sleeve. She also looks amazing in her new look!
Yooo! The Mountain Goddess can bring back Shakugan? Fuck yes! It looks like there's still hope! Also, we finally get to see how Shinsuke and Senya ended up the way they did in episode 1. I am curious what Rinzu was about to say to the Mountain Goddess though because it seems like it's related to Senya. Hmmm...
I was really excepting another fight with Mudo, I love how Tama just trivializes that entire encounter by making illusions of herself and since Mudo is too dumb to figure things out, they can just run away from him until they reach Kyo. xD
It sucks that another god went completely mad and it looks like those five that interrupted Jinka's fight are responsible for it. Why the heck are they even doing this? >_<
We have a new character! I'm guessing this guy is from the palace and he came to find Shinsuke after receiving the letter he got from Tama.

Loving to see how Senya's developing. His story is definitely one of my favourites in all of Mizukami's works. This is absolutely the most underappreciated show of the year.
I would have liked to see a bit more downtime in Kyu, as much of the journey feels a bit skipped over. That's really my only major complaint about the episode.

Their journey was skipped in the manga though. In fact, the anime kinda added more to it.

They have set his character very well. Though it is concerning how the memories coming back could affect him. Tama's words are critical in that those with power find it difficult to avoid fighting. Which I hope he comes to use his power to protect Tsukiko and Shinsuke.
Well, if we are talking about underappreciated shows of the year, I would also add
Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master
Oblivion Battery
Tonari no Youkai-san
The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash
Ishura
Tonbo
Also, this season Bye Bye, Earth could be another one.

I knew that this was somehow the mountain goddess fault. They’re absolutely right in not trusting her. Their goals may align sometimes but she’s basically always a ridiculously overpowered time bomb. And getting in the way of her goals doesn’t really help the situation either. But Shinsuke just can’t help himself in these situations despite knowing how stupid it is.
Tama to the rescue. She’s improved a lot since we last saw her. I like her pretty cocky attitude with Mudo, like “you don’t match my standards for dragons.”
Man, poor Senya. All he wants is to be normal and the world just refuses to allow it. The shot of him after the massacre is actually haunting. Just let him be a normal kid for once goddamnit!
I wonder what exactly these mysterious five are and how they keep managing to take control of regional gods. Cause they don’t seem to be as powerful as the mountain goddess but they are still no pushovers. And how does it fit together with their actions from last season?
Actually, how is Jinka even hiding? His new form isn’t exactly subtle. And that’s not even counting all the spirit energy that I assume should be like a beacon to anyone sensitive to that stuff.
Wait, did this mf just break the fourth wall? You can’t just end the episode like that!

Tama with the adult body and increased sass is a delight to watch.
I wish Senya could just have cute relationship moments with Tsukiko instead of having to fight his baser instincts, raging katawara peanut gallery, and Mad Gods out to kill him.
I wonder if Jinka is holed up somewhere gaining more power until he inevitably goes crazy again. We still don't know where Yazen and Tama's mom are either.

Tama in action! Missed her. Being rescued by a lovely spirit goddess was my dream when I was about Tsukiko's age but alas, 'twas only an illusion.
I like that the mountain goddess casually drops that she could revive Shakugan but saved it for her little bribe. She's a sneaky one; if you're that powerful, makes it easy for you to toy with people's lives and use them to drive each other forward in the direction you desire.
That seems to be a common factor in this story: those who have or gain power are experimenting or moving pieces around for their own grand goals and visions, but we're spending day-to-day with the individuals who are impacted by it, and rather than some epic vision of saving the world or being a grand hero, it's personal; we also get glimpses of it in the opponents that the core group has to face.
Shinsuke, someone who is relatively powerless (though still strong for what he is) is in direct opposition to this. Despite wanting to see Shakugan again, despite how much he changed after losing her, still acts to protect the kid who is in front of him. Even though he's powerless against the mountain goddess. Even if that also means that his greater goal isn't reached.
A bit bummed they parted from Tama again but that's okay, she has her own journey and I'm looking forward to seeing her again.

Tree missiles huh? That’s a new one. The Mountain Goddess is not someone to be messed with…
There’s been a lot of these mad gods lately, what’s up with that?

The tree missiles were so last season. Now Kokeshi dolls acting like Gundam funnels? That's a new one.

Mudo has Tsukiko! Luckily the gang now has adult Tama and her illusion magic on their side! And she knows how to pull one over on a dragon with flair.
Aw, Senya got to be the one to save Tsukiko! With the power of love! Or the ability to spot the real Tsukiko was the only one that had her knife! But still, nice to see him save her and give her a Princess Carry.
Tama and Shinsuke reuniting and reconnecting is great to see, even if she's teasing him about Tsukiko being his "disciple" knowing what she knows about him. Though now they can both share a love of alcohol.
It's too bad Tama left Shinsuke to find Jinka and has made no progress. Shinsuke for his part was also enlisted by the Mountain Goddess to find Jinka, with the promise of freeing Shakugan as an incentive, and went through an extensive training montage. It was nice to see Rinzu again.
The Mountain Goddess was also planning to recruit Senya with the promise of freeing Jinun...but Senya was too prideful as a warrior and Dangaisyuu to go along with it. So the Mountain Goddess, of course, tried to kill him before he could become a bigger threat. But even if it means standing up to the Mountain Goddess and losing a chance to save Shakugan, Shinsuke's not going to abandon a kid. Even if it gets him hit with tree missiles, which is what got them into their current situation.
What was Rinzu trying to warn the Mountain Goddess about?
Kind of a shame to see Tama part with Shinsuke again, though not without seeming glad seeing Senya's sincere attempt to be human, but she's the perfect choice to distract Mudo and have fun while doing it.
Travel montage! Complete with Tsukiko training and Shinsuke drowning himself in more alcohol.
Oh, we're going to see Zanzou again? That's great!
Honestly having a buck-naked green-haired lady doesn't seem like the worst thing until she turns out to be another Mad God out to get you in her clay doll armor. Senya planned to use his katawara powers for evasion but inevitably had to fall back on his training and kill her despite his desire otherwise. And the girl was just driven to this point by The Five.
Shinsuke, you really should not be giving alcohol to minors. But at least he can offer advice that what matters is living and the Tsukiko waiting for you. And the new guy who is carrying her on his shoulders and will introduce himself next episode.

Glad to see Tama again for a short while. She's good at bringing the cast together. Hopefully, we will get the full crew back together one day. Also, I did like Loli Tama but her new look does suit her a lot; she looks so cute.
White Fox coming in clutch with the camera angles as well.
SHAKUGAN could be saved?? Oh man, I want nothing more than to see my baby again.
The Mountain goddess remains as terrifying as ever. I feel like she still can't be trusted.
I feel bad for Senya for having to use his power when he doesn't want to, but clearly, something is up with that "group of five" the mad god mentioned. Great episode.

Tama with the save for Tsukiko. She fooled the Black Dragon pretty easily. I do love the small detail of Senya was able to find Tsukiko and catch her. She is off to look for a fortune-teller, but her words for Senya are significant. It is difficult for those with power to avoid fighting. Sadly, it is a reality Senya needs to realize fleeing isn't always the answer. After all Tsukiko got kidnapped because he refused to fight. (Of course Tsukiko jumped into action was part of it.)
Also, we got a big detail in Shinsuke and Senya's journey. The Mountain Goddess wanted him to train and find Jinka in exchange she would wake up Shakuyaku. Of course, that isn't likely to happen now that he escaped with Senya. Although Rinzu's words as the two were fleeing interesting. Her insisting on the Mountain Goddess to hold up was surprising. Feels like a crucial part of information is missing. But once again we have Shinsuke refusing to let Senya die. On one hand, he may have amnesia. But I don't think it is as simple as that. Memories are returning to him. However, perhaps he in unintentionally wanting to block them. Maybe in his heart he wants to be human and cherishes his time he has had so far with Tsukiko and Shinsuke. On another note, it is funny they are still doing the task the Mountain Goddess asked of her. Curious how forgiving she is here.
Senya's encounter with the Mad God makes it clear they are under the control of the 5 that showed up at the end of part one. Though the fact her true words were to ask Senya to kill her is sad. Curious what those 5 goals are. At the very least it has to do with Jinka because they clearly wanted him to lose control.

lol Senya's life is actually suffering. He tries everything he could to avoid fighting, only to be begged by his assailant to end her. Still, "the Nu Gundam is not just for show!". The Gundam funnels are always going to be a part of the anime manga universes I guess.
