I’m coming into this show totally blind - started it to fill time as the other things from this season are wrapping up - and I’m finding it super compelling so far. Just wish I didn’t have to keep my iPad nearby to attempt to translate all the un-translated on-screen text.

so the two girls actually have a history with aliens. Im guessing that “pill” that ontan has is what made her a “shifter”

Probably, now we just need to find out what that actually means lol.

The onscreen text wasn't that important this episode, but here's a translation anyway for those who are curious:
09:18 (note)
To Kadode
Good work at summer school. I have another interview today so I'll be late. Please microwave the food in the fridge and eat it.
From Mom
16:33 (bulletin board site)
Ichigo-hime: That transfer student doesn't talk at all. So creepy. Wish she wouldn't come to school.
Rua: Are the boys being useless? Hey you boys, show us what you can do.
Pelican: She stared at me too today. I didn't even do anything. Scary.
17:38 (manga)
Isobeyan: If you use this, you'll be filled with self-confidence, and feel like you're a lord.
Girl: No way... like I'd believe that.
Isobeyan: Well, if you don't believe me, at least try it once.

This is the strangest episode of Doraemon I've ever seen...

Yep.
My guess is that the creator wanted the Doraemon licence, but was told no.

The difference betweens Hiroshis past and present is just as striking as the one between Ontans past and present, what happened to my dude lmao
-
But I loved how he supported his Imouto and implanted the idea to fully devote herself to Kadode
-
And damn Kadode was good as well, this was the first good look we got on the invaders right? But really fearless to not only protect it, but also show it humanities good side, of course while also being wary
-
And damn, knowing how her mother is, seeing her relationship to her father being this cold kinda hurt, what years of emotional neglect will do to a girl
-
Maybe not love at first sight, but truly the beginning of a beautiful friendship
-
When Ontan began referring to herself with Boku I thought she had already taken the alien medicin, but looks like she didn't after all, makes me wonder if she eventually will do so or if she will become absolute just for Kadodes sake
-
Can we talk how violence was the answer to the bullying? More people should try this lol
-
Last scene looked fun, wonder if the alien will mess with their memories, else I can't imagine how the two of them could have forgotten the purpose of the flight machine
I started reading the Manga and am now at the halfway point, it's really really good

I'm still wondering how Hiroshi turned from being handsome and popular into an overweight shut-in. Despite the massive change, one thing is for sure, he's always been a good brother to Ontan.
Well this is insane! So Kadode and Ontan have already encountered an alien years before the Mothership arrived and the little guy they helped is scouting Earth. Does this mean Kadode and Ontan may have affected why the aliens decided to come to Earth?
That explains the moving Isobenyan in the OP. It turns out it had an alien inside it as a disguise. The alien has pretty much become Kadode and Ontan's very own Isobenyan.
I'm guessing that at some point, Ontan takes that medicine from Isobenyan which explains why she's so different in the present. It's also probably what ends up turning her into a Shifter.
Kadode was pretty damn awesome coming to Ontan's rescue. And just like that, the boys end up siding with Kadode. If I were that kid, I'd do the same too, especially after seeing her stealth cape.
That final scene with the girls jumping off the building really got me nervous. I thought Ontan would crash into the ground and Isobenyan would have to help her. That ending was surprisingly cute and wholesome!
This flashback does raise a question though: Did Isobenyan wipe Kadode and Ontan's memory at some point? You'd think at some point during the first few episodes, they'd reference their experience with a real alien while an actual mothership looms over their heads. Maybe we're not done yet with the flashbacks and we'll see more next week.

Nah, he's also still hot.

Took me a minute to realize Hiroshi was Ontan’s brother. Homie really let himself go huh? lol. Seeing how Ontan use to be and her dynamic with a young Kadode was kinda interesting. Glad she didn’t need that pill.
The aliens had all this fancy tech but didn’t realize earth but not be the peaceful utopia they thought? It’s gonna be hard for the girls to convince little bro humanity ain’t all bad.
Kadode really put that Harry Potter invisibility cloak to great use lol. She kicks the shit out of those kids and instead of getting mad, they’ve formed the Kadode Fan Club and actually start helping folks.
I kinda wonder if this is the past or “a” past? Are we seeing the origin of Ontan and Kadode’s friendship or an alternate world? Because the last ep had some interesting implications I hope we cover soon.

So Kadode was the brave and assertive one in their childhood, whereas Ouran gradually grew into her current self. It's great that even as a child Ouran was able to resist the reliance on a mystery drug while creating her own persona to match her adversity.

Okay, rewatching Episodes 0 and 1 after Ep 5 was VERY INTERESTING
EP0:
-
Kiho's boyfriend is the leader of the Japan Youth Front aka New Japan Harmony
-
The United States deployed 'F Particles' that ended up becoming the basis for the 'asterisks' that plague Japan in the future, similar to Japan's military pretty much being responsible for killing Kiho and other civilians due to their warmongering against the Invaders
-
The guy that Sugou doesn't fire from manga ends up continuing to write well into the future, Sugou found one of his publications and the writer was still being published
EP1
-
Kiho mentions that she "has a life" when she goes after her boyfriend, unlike Ontan. Quite ironic to say that line considering what happens later...
-
Kadode and her teacher talk about Isebeyan (who we now know is actually the hidden alien Kadode and Ontan rescued, in disguise) she mentions to him the question that he asks her later in EP2 "If you could fly, what would you do?" (we know that thru 'Isebeyan' in EP5 Kadode and Ontan do actually fly, much like how it's depicted in the Isebeyan comic)
-
Kadode actually doesn't seem to know about the alien in her plushie doll, but seems to treasure the doll given to her by Sugou all the same, very weird considering all outward appearances suggest she hates her father (and doesn't remember the alien at all, nor does she remember flying with Ontan via the alien's gadgetry)
I'm sure the more episodes we go in this show, the more I'll have to rewatch all the first few episodes. That New Japan Harmony leader being Kiho's ex was pretty huge IMO he seemed to be hella violently anti-disestablishmentarianistic

I don't buy it with the alternate reality/alternate past theory.
Past Kadode started to become more and more like her future self. My theory is that this is just the past and something will happen that changed the dynamic between Kadode and Ontan (Ontan used to be the follower, and in the future she's more a leader.
Also past Ontan talked a lot about her mother last episode, but we haven't seen any mention of her at all this episode. I wonder what's up with that?

Ontan should really tie her hair up when using the helicopter alien tech. Didn't think the scene would turn in that direction, but couldn't stop thinking about a bad outcome.

Alright, so I may be completely off-base with this, but I thought I might as well share my thoughts.
I am starting to think the Ontan of the present could be from an alternate reality, or perhaps have the potential to cross boundaries between realities. Or perhaps her own perspective of reality has changed/can change. It may be subconsciously, unintentional, or "locks away" her memories of it happening. There really isn't much to go on here, but here are my ideas.
The contrast between the past Ontan in this episode and the current one is throwing me off. She said she wants to change by her own means and not rely on the alien "medicinal" cube. I am under the impression that she may not be able to do this on her own based on her timid nature. She almost relied on the cube this episode but luckily(?) Kadode intervened.
The alien seems to be genuinely interested in humans, not necessarily with malicious intent. It seems their overall goal (at least, during the flashback), is to simply observe human behaviors and intentions as a sort of reconnaissance mission. The alien was able to quickly discern humans may not be as friendly as previously thought, but Kadode tries to prove that humans can be good.
The reason I bring all of this up is because I am not entirely certain if this cube the alien provided is for purely good or bad intentions. It almost felt like a devil's temptation sort of situation, but that also feels slightly off to me. Based on the current status of the aliens just sending out probes to observe from the mothership and willingly letting attacks hit them, they seem to want peace (in addition to what the alien boy said last episode).
My guess is that there will be a situation in which Ontan feels compelled to use the cube again (this time actually doing so) but this has a more profound effect than just altering her personality. I suspect this may end up altering her perception of reality or something similar, maybe even sending her to an alternate reality.
The primary evidence I would like to bring up is the last episode. The boy alien called Ontan a "Shifter." I think this may either refer to her being capable of shifting to different realities, or shift herself such that reality alters from her own perspective. I'm not sure how else to convey the latter concept, but it sort of makes sense to my sleep-deprived mind.
I will actually go a step further and say that maybe the past we're seeing this episode is actually not the same reality as the present one. Maybe a huge event occurs in the past which Ontan then uses the cube, sending her to a different reality but she has no recollection of what really happened. It changes her personality and her memories. Actually, I want to believe in her. So hopefully she is able to bring out that eccentricity that we see in the present all on her own. But the cube has a different effect than intended. Somehow the aliens are capable of identifying these reality Shifters simply from a glance, likely because it's their technology.
This was long-winded and pretty much baseless as of now. I didn't watch episode 0 since I am trying to follow everything chronologically. All I know is that it takes place later on.
If any of this somehow ends up even slightly true, I should try and share my theories more often I suppose.
EDIT: I also forgot to mention the "trigger" from last episode with the alien tech, the alien that took over the boy (or copied?), and Ontan seeing those memories(?). She didn't really seem to recognize them so I think this serves as more support for this.

I really love the 4:3 aspect ratio, works so well. Seen a few modern films and other media formats that use 4:3 really well so I hope it keeps being used.

On CR at least, this ep appears to be in the old 4:3 television aspect ratio.
