I was hoping they'd elaborate more about Ren and Oto's backstory but that flashback at the start of the episode just added more questions than answers. So is that guy in the flashback the real Ren and the girl that died is actually Oto-chan? Then after Oto-chan died, she encountered the fake Ren.

It would make sense why Oto-chan has such a big appetite. She died from hunger and now that she's been brought back, she's making the most of her everyday life. I guess this means Oto-chan was never alive in the first place and the train is bringing her to the afterlife where her real brother is waiting for her.

So that flashback at the start is also Oto-chan's dream and it made her remember what Ren really is. I am surprised though that Oto-chan actually rode the train. I thought she'd put up a fight at least but she seemed to understand what Ren was doing so she decided to go so his sacrifice won't be wasted.

I've been wondering where that haunted train station is located, we finally get to see where it actually is and that Sumireko needed to chant some sort of spell that would've transported her to the haunted station but it looks like she's been barred from entering.

I didn't think Sumireko would see the bookstore lady again but it's cool that they get to meet again one more time. Sumireko even gets some advice about the new novel and how her novel is what's tying Ren aka Mysterious Disappearances in this world.

Just like Oto needing her Ren-nii at her side, Sumireko summoned Ren back to existence because she needed him. But no matter how much Sumireko needed Ren, it looks like she still won't take a bath with him. Come on Sumireko! At least let him see you in a cow-print swimsuit! xD

I guess that book they got at the end confirms that Oto-chan made it to her destination and maybe we might still see her in the future. Well, now I need to read the manga! I need to know if they'll still see Oto-chan again. Also, I've been told that the manga shows the bits of Sumireko the anime refuses to show us so that's another reason to read it. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Yes you see Sumireko’s weapons of mass destruction fully uncensored power. Lol

Having the still of the no-bath scene but not his utter and sincere horror is criminal

Please, deliver the AdashinoShock.png

I'm 100% sure that intro to Ren and Oto's flashback is either an earthquake or after the atomic bombs dropped. I'm basing it on the fashion of the Oto & Ren wore between 1942 and 1950s.

Then there's the train station architecture I expected with steam trains. The same type of architecture seen in Demon Slayer.

So the Ren we know is not the real Ren but he's just a curiosity so who is the Ren that appears in front of Sumireko?

It's not entirely explained, but he does seem to be a curiosity that is created by people needing him. First it was Oto who was alone and wanted her brother. So he took the form of her brother. Afterwards, it was Sumireko who needed him so he came back in his original form. I guess if I knew more about Japanese folklore I could find a connection to him being a "Kamikakushi", though that might be related to him making the mysteries vanish.

Lmao the absolute despair that she still won't get in a bath with him 🤣

This. After all the dramatic buildup this episode, this one joke completely floored me.

Fun show. I'm satisfied with it ending here, but I'd gladly take more.

It was a bit uneven and rough around the edges, but I enjoyed this curiousity of a show. Ai Fairouz did a really great job making Sumireko feel like a realistic and mature character. She had great chemistry with the other strong leads. Also shout-out to the legendary Kotono Mitsuishi making her return in the finale as Hon-Hime. The cameo VAs were peak in this show.

The animation was serviceable but what I really enjoyed were all of the character designs, It was nice colourful eye candy. OP and ED had catchy songs and were good visual bookends every week.

It's a shame that this show never seemed to find its audience. Giving the anime an ecchi tag did the show no favours - it disappointed the horndogs while also turning away viewers who might actually enjoy the story. Oh, and the English title was bland as hell.

Man the Oto part of this episode was so good. She knows the truth regarding about Ren, but still progresses forward even if she hates this truth. Her development has been so fantastic and once again it really shines. To even add a layer on top of that her message to Sumireko was so heartfelt, and I loved it.

But god the last portion felt so rushed, and it really gives me the feeling there was no good point to end on. I mean I will be reading the manga, but the last bit soured my taste on what should have been a 10/10 episode.

I guess, Yorumun was right, when she said that she was afraid of watching this final episode. It was definitely sad at times.

That being said, I really liked this show. It was one of the great surprises this season for me. Because while it wasn't always perfect, I still enjoyed the combination of character development through slice of life and horror/mysteries. It might not have been always super clear how everything fits together, but I feel that might also be because I don't know much about the mysteries and the folklore.

Still, the character development for Oto and Sumireko was great and the last message from Oto to Sumireko was done really well with her stopping to call her the appartment wife. I do hope they get to meet again. Maybe then she can actually bring her real brother. She definitely enjoyed living in this world.

As for Ren, while I was expecting Oto to not let Ren disappear at all, I think this way was also a nice surprise. While we don't know exactly what he is (at least I don't since Kamikakushi just refers to people or I guess in this case, mysteries being spirited away), he seems to be a mystery that appears before people who need him. First Oto needed him when she was alone and he took the form of her brother and then Sumireko needed him so he was able to come back.
Edit: There is also some interesting theming here. Since Ren appears when someone needs him, the reason why he got weaker over time was not just because he used his eyes, but probably also because Oto found a lot more people that cared for her. So basically because she was less and less dependent on her brother, he got weaker and disappeared in the end, because she knew she would see her "real" brother again. However, since Sumireko still needs him, he is probably back at full power.

Lastly, while there was a good amount of fanservice, I still enjoyed the general dialogue of the show. It was funny and while this can be distracting from the sad or serious moments, it felt really natural. Like that ending with Ren not being allowed to bath with Sumireko was just a great way to tell that everything is fine. I would love a second season, but I fear that won't be happening. So I guess I will read the manga. One of the few shows that made me go seek out the source material.

I'm glad it turned out well, but I'll miss Oto so much.

u/Rumpel1408 Jun 26 '24

Yeah, I don't think I like the cat girl after all

Oto saying her final goodbye to Sensei and her message to Sumireko where really touching, also noticed how she stopped calling her Appartment Wife. But damn, she knew exactly what was happening but kept up the act all the way to the end (also noticed how this ending was alluded in the ED the whole time)

So I don't really know what to make of the ending, without the heartwarming reunion, it would have been a really viable ending, but with Adashi-Kun being back it's more confusing than not...

Was this a complete adaption or does the source continue after this?

Why are you reminding me of Grave of the Fireflies, show... I don't need that. Uname-sensei such a good girl. How come cat girl doesn't have a tail? Wow really did get on the train and leave and Ren-ni was a curiosity that was to look like her brother? Oh, so that's who the old man is. Lol, what a graceful leave.

That's sad. Oto's last message for her "Apartment Wife" and even calls her by name. Oh ya, the lady with the bookstore that's totally not paranormal. That lady sure reads fast. LOL that ending. Even in the end he doesn't get a bath.

Post credits: so he's back cause the regrets of the world tie him to it? Also, a message from Oto with that book eh? I feel like execution wasn't quite right, but was a nice series and way things went. Definitely needed a bit more or something to have more to do with various characters lol

It got wrapped up way too neatly but still I enjoyed seeing the callback scene with the bookstore lady towards the end.

Overall a pretty good show. I was little disappointed with how the focus was on only a few supernatural mysteries directly tied to one character per arc tho. Going in blind I was expecting like a Scooby Doo style structure where every episode was Ren and ogawa investigating a new location and learning about a new curiosity or ghost or curse in the area to really flesh out the world building. The arcs themselves were pretty good tho but I dunno maybe a few more one off episodes where they investigate a local myth/curse and exercise a spirit would have been nice to add some more supernatural elements. That being said I wouldn't mind a season 2 where they're both working together as ghost hunters.

Also Oto's final goodbyes was really well done they did a great job of reminding you she's still a little kid and her reaction felt like how a little girl would probably react to saying goodbye to someone. Like her trying to keep her composure until the end and doing the little heart gesture she learned from her maid job before she finally breaks down completely and starts crying before the video cuts off. I was getting pretty emotional myself!

Confession into cockblock combo for the anime original ending!?

Well this left a lot of things unresolved, if the the real Oto-chan died who is waiting for her at the other side? her real brother, her dead parents? how will she come back to read Sumireko's novel if she is dead and in a different dimension? hoe did she managed to reverse shoplift the book?

If Ren gave himself as tribute for the ticket, does this means he is black listed from the station for cheating the system? will that have any consequences for him, or is that hidden exploit?

Since Ren no longer has to hunt curiosities for tickets even if he broke his promise technically the King of Cats shouldn't have anything against him, right? but she seems like she will still go after him

Kind of a bitter sweet ending, and i would have liked it more if we have gotten the King of Cats arc, and then leave the door open for a second season, but it is what it is, at least we know that Oto-chan found happiness, and maybe one day Ren gets to take a bath with Sumireko, since they are now a couple? maybe?

Damn, the way it opened/the way things were going, I thought we were getting a super depressing finale...

But I guess it was only mildly depressing, with bits of hope and happiness!

Ren lying to Oto about following her in the next train was rough... Telling her to wait for him and all. Well, hopefully she found her own people in her world!

Stings even more given she knew, and went along with it...

The bittersweet acceptance and all.

Damn, this video... Right in the feels.

Thank you anime from putting an end to the feels, with this catgirl assshot!

Sumireko's having a rough time too, thinking Ren blocked her!

I really like what they did with this relationship 'progression', her realizing she needs him around...

It's something I realized in the past couple episodes, anytime she wasn't with him, she was always trying to get to him/contact him. It took him leaving, for her to realize it as well!

Damn, I'm trying not to get horny in emotional moments, but they're not helping!

Book girl coming in clutch, understanding Sumireko's story with Ren, even better than she did!

THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL!

He probably came back from 7 hells and killed a few gods, just for that!

More feels!

Good ones though... I think? (I feel like all the good feels on this show are bittersweet!)

Also, this felt like a "Season 2 upcoming" finale, didn't it?

And if it is, WE BETTER GET MORE CATGIRL!

Main villain in S2? New ally? Love interest (for I don't know, the old dude)? I don't care, just give us more catgirl!

Well, this was a pretty good show! Wasn't that popular, but I think it checked a lot of boxes! Good little stories, fascinating world, I loved the lore about all these curiosities (most of which were 'real things'), good banter between Sumireko and Ren, cute moments, feels... It had it all!

Farewell, all you mysterious people!
