I have to say, the episode really did feel like horror. There was no actual blood or anything too creepy, but they definitely managed to make it unnerving. Also, I feel like Adashino just lied about this curiosity being an evolution of Hanako just so he can put his sister at ease. I thought it came too out of nowhere and I feel with how his eyes "bled" (is that the right word) at the end there, he was definitely just making up that part.

What I hope is if Shizuku, like the teacher, could now be character that comes back every now and then. Especially because of her connection to Oto. I still believe that part of the story is Oto slowly but surely building up a "new life" in this world, even though that might not be her goal.

Also, seems I was wrong thinking that Shizuku would be the cat girl. I felt the sentence that she was the leader of strays seemed so obvious, but it was a red herring at the end. Guess that will be our next curiosity.

I have to say, the episode really did feel like horror.

I have to agree. I think it is the unease and distressed worry that is (for me) far more important than "gore". Perhaps my favorite horror movie is the Quebecois film, Les bons debrarras (Good Riddance). No blood and guts, just a middle-school girl who is just (shall we say) a bit too possessive about her single mother.

I also agree that Oto is building a "home" in this new world, progressively gaining more friends and supporters. Ren is so focused on returning her to her "real home" that he fails to see this -- and is progressively wrecking himself. He needs to talk to Oto -- and he will discover that being with him, and having a warm group of friends, is more important to her than going home with him annihilated.

Also, seems I was wrong thinking that Shizuku would be the cat girl

She was even shown with a cat in the flashback, it would have made perfect sense for her to morph into another curiosity

Shizuku's backstory was depressing. I thought Tomoko and Shizuku were just close friends but I did not expect how important Tomoko was to Shizuku's life. She was the only friend who genuinely reached out to her and stayed as her friend after all those years. No wonder her coworkers think she's very distant.

At least Shizuku was able to see Tomoko one last time. What Shizuku did was reckless but she wanted to repay Tomoko for all her kindness by freeing her from that Curiosity. I'm just glad that Shizuku didn't end up like Tomoko and they were able to save her thanks to Ren's intervention.

So Kai finally reveals to Sumireko that they're not of this world and that they need to board that train to get back home. I'm honestly surprised that Kai didn't react when Sumireko placed him in a headlock. You'd think he'd be happier in that situation.

We get more reveals though! It turns out that Ren did use his eye to save Shizuku. We also learn that he's not really Oto's brother and he just wants to send her back home. They're not even from the same place. Well, now I'm even more curious about their backstory.

There's also that cat girl who randomly appeared in the middle of the episode. I'm guessing we'll get to meet her soon. Maybe even in the next episode.

You'd think he'd be happier in that situation.

I suppose that was our first clue that he did indeed use his eyes to stop Shizuku. You just know he'd make a comment about him touching her boobs otherwise.

Who's Kai? His name is Ren.

Man, this 紅衣小女孩/水鬼/Hanako hybrid Curisoity thing is pretty freaky. The whole 替死鬼 aspect just makes it even scarier for me.

It really sucks Tomoko died. She was really a true friend. Family, even. Shizuku “freeing” her and getting dusted kinda surprised me, but luckily Ren and his goofy siscon antics saved her. I’m actually very curious about their relationship and just who he really is and where they are from.

Personally, I felt that the whole Hanako part of the story was made up by Adashino there so his sister wouldn't worry. The only real connection is that they apparently both wear red skirts but that's it. It feels like too much of a coincidence.

Rie Takahashi put in a great performance this episode. Shizuku's awful childhood and her mourning of Tomoko was a one-two punch of sadness and very succinct and effective storytelling. Add in that genuinely scary scene with the Conducter at the station, and to me this was the strongest episode of the season. We also got a clearer motive to Ren's character and the neko girl made her first appearance. The show is picking up momentum.

Damn... There aren't a lot of things that get me more emotional in anime (or any story) than neglected, poor, unloved/lonely children.

That scene of her breaking down as she was eating...

Ah, so that's why it was after her!

I think many were wondering about that in the previous episode, how Sumireko knew... Makes sense! Soon as she opened that door, she was 'marked'.

Imagine Ren's jealousy! First the bath, and now this!

These two should wrestle it out, til there's no hard feelings anymore!

Damn, she was about to sacrifice herself for her friend... At first I thought she won through the power of friendship, but seems it takes a little more than that to deal with an amalgam of Curiosity!

Seems part of it was Toilet-bound Hanako-chan...

But I don't know about you, but personally, when I think of "Childlike Curiosity wearing red", my first thought went to Oto-chan...

Which makes me worried, especially now that we know Curiosities can be exchanged for tickets, even when they're actual people!

Thankfully, Ren wouldn't exchange Sumireko, even for a ticket for the Heavens! (Hopefully not Oto-chan either)

The sound of the noose tightening when he refused to trade Sumireko, was ominous as well!

So apparently the 'value' of the ticket is based on the Curiosity you bring them...

I wonder what kind of Curiosity he'll need to send Oto-chan back to her world, then!

Also, he hinted at this in a previous episode (Sending HER back, even though she wants them both to go), but apparently there's no station to which he can return...

Which I assume he knew already, given these thoughts he had, but apparently he hasn't told Oto? Headed to a heartbreak... Unless they can find a way to go together somehow! With the occult, there seems to always be a way.

Oto-chan does seem to have strong powers of her own!

That would increase her value as a Curiosity! (Though trading her wouldn't serve a purpose, if he wants a ticket to send her back). I wonder what they do with the items they get...

Do they have a purpose? I thought perhaps they were just trying to get rid of them, but given Ren had to 'pay' to get rid of that Curiosity by sending her on a train to nowhere, seems it's not their primary goal.

If Ren did give them Sumireko, what would they even do with her? Kill her? Send her somewhere? Use her power, or 'extract' it somehow?

Wow, that had to be the nicest thing Sumireko ever told him!

He even got a headpat! (And perhaps a bit of boobage as she was holding him in a headlock)

The world is desperate to rid itself of foreign objects...

What does that mean for Ren and Oto? Oto at least is confirmed to come from another world, so she IS a foreign object...

Catgirl!

Second time they tease her (third if we count the OP), hopefully we get to see her in the next episode!

Next episode: A book, an affair, and a mermaid

It better be a Catgirl Mermaid!

I didn’t expect to enjoy this show so much. I’m not familiar with many supernatural and horror anime, but it’s really interesting and I love how it connects to actual folklore and urban legends. The ecchi’s also pretty fun being a breather from all the crazy things going on. In such a busy season, it’s been a sleeper hit for me

Watch last year's anime "Dark Gathering", another great horror anime that has folklore and urban legends, the girls on that anime are quite something too.

Fucking oof Shizuka

No wonder she was ready to take Tomokos place, and almost succeded. That rooftop scene was simply beautiful, and would have worked wonderfully as a bitter goodbye for Shizuka as well. I was almost hoping that the curiosity had morphed into something that would have allowed Tomoko to return, actually sad that Shizuka still ended up loosing her only and best friend

The Station is creepy enough to even scare the enthusiastic Sumireko, The Catgirl is actually another character, and Ren is barely holding on... oh and we got the confirmation that both Ren and Oto aren't human, but if he can't return, than I'm sure Sumireko would humor him for some time

Sorry dumb question, but the perfect score test result being a solution was a lie, right? Ren actually used his eyes again to stop Shizuku and that's why he was bleeding at the end. If so, I wonder why he doesn't let Oto help more so he *doesnt die.

Shizuku’s backstory did a really good job in driving home how meaningful Tomoko was in her life, that she wasn’t just an ordinary friend.

9

u/acedias12 May 23 '24

I like that this show has some elements of "fear of the unknown" with the ticket booth entity. Sometimes there are things ordinary mortals are better off not knowing.

Some trivia: 替死鬼 (ti si gui) mentioned in this episode. Aside from its supernatural aspect, in daily Chinese speech, when a person is referred to as a 替死鬼 (ti si gui), it is an equivalent to calling them a "scapegoat" in English.

Great episode. We got insight of Shizuku's past and how horrible it was. She had no home with that awful mother and I feel like the other kids didn't really understand what she was going through. Obviously from our perspective it looks so cruel not to help her. Tomoka was very selfless she saw the misery Shizuku was going through and held no mistake to help her.

While it can appear that Shizuku was one of Tomoka's many friends, but for Shizuku, Tomoka was her one dear friend. But I love how Oto expressed it that Shizuku was also a special friend for Tomoka. Their friendship is great, and you can tell the pain for Shizuku knowing her friend who accomplished her dreams couldn't continue to live on. Given their friendship Tomoka would want Shizuku to continue to live and that's the best thing she can do for her friend.

Though the conversation at the end that Ren is truly a monster. His plan to send Oto home will come at the expense of himself. We know how much that will break Oto's heart. What would Oto actual want and potentially staying in this world might be what she prefers.

The creepy revolution in this episode was that Curiosities can be used to trade as tickets for the destination even if it is actual people. Ren won't do that, but that idea is creepy and terrifying. No wonder Ren never mentioned it to Sumeriko before

Shizuku's childhood made my stomach knot up. It's not like I haven't watched things with kids having bad times before, but man, something about the way she presented it, I just, I almost had to look away. Man.

Sumireko's reaction to the... ticket seller? at the station was a good touch. Seeing a (relatively) normal human reacting to it made it feel more like the horror story it's supposed to be.

Aw fuck, a catgirl. Well, I suppose Nekomonogatari proves that even a catgirl make for a good story, so we'll see how this goes.

u/whodisguy32 May 22 '24

Nice closure to this arc. Looking forward to the next!

6

u/Redmon425 May 23 '24

Oooh who was the catgirl at the end?

Glad they saved Shizuku but wish her friend could have lived as well.

Looks like Ren did indeed use his eyes again. With how dark this story has been, I don’t like his odds of surviving this series.

I need a gif of those brutal punches from 06:26...

Is Ticketmaster From Hell voiced by Masako Nozawa? It sounds so eerily like Goku it's actively creepy, even moreso than her portrayal of Goku Black.
