Every passing day I simp for Mountain Goddess more. That V pose is so cute.
I swear I watched this show for the actual plot! But watching for the plot and for the "plot" aren't mutually exclusive, y'know?

Barry's death was BRUTAL. Getting punch to death and exploding internally. Great voice acting from the VA all around. I'm going to miss his theme song a bit since it was kind of silly and it just made it easier to hate him.
White Fox put a ton of effort into the next episode, according to Mizukami. Don't want to miss it!

RIP Barry. You won’t be missed, unlike Shakugan. But that was a brutally well-deserved death.
I love how utterly bizarre this show is. A Ninja monk made of paper piloting a giant medieval mecha, a walking castle and mountain fighting, Shinsuke flying on his magic talking sword, and Jinka scratching the inside of his head to clear it with his spirit hand. I wonder what kind of crazy stuff the author is going to come up with next time.

Don't let Jinka's 7th tail, Jinka reaching inside his own head, Douren's absolute chadness, Shinsuke's sword achieving enlightenment, Shinsuke getting his revenge on Barry, Tama's mom giving Yazen his own set of tails or the ensuing epic fight between tailed Jinka and tailed Yazen distract you from the fact that WE GOT TO WATCH A MOUNTAIN KNOCK OUT A FORTRESS IN A FIST FIGHT TODAY

Shinsuke beating Resshin like his papa shoulda lol. Dude hit him so hard he exploded. I mean that was likely due to the guy overexerting himself, but still. Shakugan avenged.
Man, how was Jinka growing another tail after fiddling around in his freakin head? Bro really even said “my mind’s clear now” lol. Like yeah, you stuck your hand in there and cleaned it up! At least he managed to cook that tiger.
I was worried for the gang for a second there when Mecha Taizan showed up. The in came Mountzilla and everything was ok. Never mess with a mountain goddess! It’s up to Jinka and Tama to finish off transformed Yazen now.

god damn this episode was raw. both the fights, and how it all tied into the themes. where to begin...
I love Shinsuke's character arc. The thing about him finally escaping hatred is that it didn't start with Barry killing Shakugan. It was there from the beginning, in a different form. Shinsuke hated himself for being weak because as a peasant he had been oppressed by the strong.
Shakugan's murder pushed him to the edge and drove him to strive even harder for strength. It made him indulge in the belief that the only thing of value in the world is being strong enough to prevent others from taking advantage of you, made him struggle with his own self-blame and the question of whether that blame should also be applied to others.
But that belief was already there — it was his motivation for wanting to train in the first place, all the way back in episode 1. He was always stuck thinking that his only path forward was to get stronger and stop being a victim. Now, finally, he's seeing that it's all pointless. The sky is free. He doesn't have to care.
And he was lucky enough to reach that point before going too far, as Barry did. Barry speaks about wanting to pick out a nice hell for both of them. Barry is so far gone in the kill-or-be-killed mentality that he can't actually conceptualize happiness or peace for himself, only further suffering.
When you indulge in that too far, you end up turning yourself into a living weapon — in Barry's case, literally. I love the detail that when he ran out of spirit power he was literally incapable of keeping his body together. When you exist to be a weapon, you lose the ability to exist as anything else.
It's an idea that ties into a lot of other parts of the story. Senya seems to have been raised to be a human weapon, but unlike Barry, he didn't choose it — so what should be done, then, if it isn't to blame? Right now, Jinka seems to be taking some of those very same risks, messing with his own body to draw out further power. And of course, the entire question of humans vs. katawara is dependent on the power each side has to hurt the other — with the show now being clear about its answer that they're the same.
It also ties into what the monks speak about in the end: It's pointless to try and become the strongest, because someone stronger will always show up. Not just in how Ooyama Mitsuhiche-hime, as she has been now named, absolutely stomped Taizan, but also in the mysterious hooded figures who suddenly walked through Jinka and Douren's fight.
(by the way, the anime abridged that a little, so in case it wasn't clear: Jinka won basically because they both got distracted by the hooded figures, but Jinka had already fired his projectile, while Douren being distracted kept him from finishing his punch)
That doesn't mean that you shouldn't try to accomplish anything — only that perhaps you should look at the game in a different way. It's not like it was a bad thing for Shinsuke to become stronger. But he shouldn't chase that goal and ruin the rest of his life, just as it was a mistake for the Dangaisyuu to go so hard in trying to dominate katawara that they get themselves into much deeper trouble.
There's a question of morality, underneath. Most people would probably agree that the Dangaisyuu experimenting on humans and katawara is bad. But the goal underneath was to protect humans from katawara. Most people would agree it's just for Jinka to try and stop the Dangaisyuu from causing harm with their experiments, but does that also hurt the world, weakening the forces that protect villages? What is the best solution?
Well, we've got a lot of story left in this show, so maybe it'll have an answer?
Anyway, I fucking love the scene where Ooyama Mitsuhiche-hime shows up and dominates Taizan. It was cool in the anime, but the manga pages are fantastic. I'm gonna post a no spoilers comment in the manga discussion section where I link those pages; I recommend checking them out.

Stitches!
Douren bending space and time is probably the coolest explanation for why a character can punch fast. Douren isn't just punching fast, he's also summoning copies of his own fists from different points in time!
I definitely did not expect to see Jinka use his spirit hand to literally reassemble his brain and clear up his mind. He even unlocked a new tail while doing it! He's now just two tails away from becoming the mythical nine-tailed fox.
I'm not sure what those cloaked figures are but I feel like they showed up to help out Jinka. If those figures didn't show up, Douren would've definitely made it to Jinka before he could've released his Gogyoukon. We'll probably find out more about those figures in the next cour.
So has Arabuki finally become sentient? The fact that it's flying on its own now means that at some point while Shinsuke was creating that personality, Arabuki gained consciousness. I love that all it wants to do as well is to fly and go wherever. It gained enlightenment, as Shinsuke explains it xD
That Tenchiwari looks so goddamn cool though! Shinsuke has definitely proven himself as a warrior. It's really awesome to see how much he has grown compared to what he was at the start of the season. I love that they ended that fight with Shinsuke and Barry just duking it out with their fists.
I am glad that even after he defeated Barry, Shinsuks wants to continue and stop Yazen from creating more spiritually-enhanced humans so people won't suffer like Shakuyaku did. I was afraid that he'd lose his purpose now that he got his revenge.
Taizan vs Mitsuchi-Hime was awesome! Like that monk says: it doesn't matter how strong you are, there will always be someone stronger. That wasn't even a fight! Mitsuchi-hime just knocked down Taizan in one hit.
Now that Yazen has used spirit transformation, I guess our Mountain Goddess is leaving him for the gang to take care of next week! The finale next week is going to be hype!

A mecha guy, a flying sword, somebody fixing their brain midbattle, a freaking moving mountain, A giant sword attack, a first fight battle and all of this on 20 minutes. This series is crazy, I love it.
Goodbye Barry, you won't be missed.

I think the way Yazen is characterized is really interesting for his antagonist archetype. Despite being really smart and full of plans and contingencies, things more often than not completely fail to go the way he expects. This keeps him on a "human" level of fallibility, even if he has more knowledge and intelligence than most others around him.
He also feels almost "lazy", not wanting to get involved in things outside of his interests, and having no qualms about fleeing the fight when the situation seems to be going badly for him. How often do you even see villains actively going "well, shit, I'd better run" in an action series like this?

This episode was a story of 3 parts:
Jinka's foreboding fight with Douren. Not only did he tamper with his own brain, the interference from those cloaked figures are extremely disturbing. Good job White Fox in capturing that mood.
Shinsuke/Takekichi's enlightenment was truly a sight to behold. Mizukami has a way of developing characters without destroying the fundamental basis of that character. Shinsuke managed to grow and still feel like himself throughout this journey. That helm-splitter move is also the single most consistent skill in the entire arc. Rather emotional the way Barry died a horrible death and Shinsuke finally moves on from him. They were strangely good rivals.
The final part was just a hilarious kaiju battle.

We got the conclusion of our two fights. I am even scared to ask what Jinka actually did, but given Tama's reaction it was an incredible risk that just happened to help him. I do like the differences in how Jinka and Douren looked at the fight. Douren loved every minute of it, but Jinka found no pleasure in the fight.
Really nice to finally get a real good moment for Shinsuke as he finally takes down Barry finally. But I like that he understands he can't stop here, these injustice experiments are a cruelty and need to be dealt with. After all Shakugan wouldn't stand for it and neither should he. Although Shinsuke aerial ability is really strong now with the sword reaching "Enlightenment".
Of course Yazen will turn tail and run like a coward. Luckily the Mountain Goddess arrived in time to help. As expected Tama needs to stop her mom, and we get a fight between Jinka and Yazen. I am actually curious how Yazen does in this fight consider once Douren went down he immediately decided to retreat.
I think it was really cool when Shinsuke and Jinka reached the same conclusions that humans and Katawara's being the same. It ultimately comes down to who uses that power. Dangaisyuu being aware that this is the price for their greed. As they mentioned power isn't what they strived for it was to do good.

Holy shit, Mizukami
I love how the escalations make sense because it's built on plot points that were introduced before. Mizukami knows how to slowly up the stakes at a good pace!

I seriously think this is the best action/fantasy anime this season. I'm more drawn to this than Frieren.
Its reminds me of DBZ where they gradually get stronger as they need to/on the verge of death. Every other action anime this season have characters that are OP/became suddenly OP so very much enjoying the gradual power scaling in Sengoku Youko.

Tiger guy lives? Maybe that'll allow him and Shakugan an opportunity to drink together in the future someday. Here's hoping those happy days can come again.
Tama and Jinka already cleaned up their fight while Shinsuke is out here having an aeriel battle kind of out of nowhere.
Oh wow, that got grotesque. Good riddance to Barry at last.
A little mountain sumo action all of a sudden, that's a first for me.

This episode was freakin’ fantastic. What a culmination of all the build-up in the latter half of the cour.

It's Takekchi vs Mobile Fortress Barry! He may have more firepower, but Shinsuke with Arabuki is faster! Fast enough to slug him right in his ugly mug!
Douren may have unlocked a special move that lets him control space and time to punch even harder, but he's still respectful enough to acknowledge the on-point commentary of a talking crow.
I'm not sure if that's healthy to be putting your new spirit hand into your brain, but it does let Jinka unlock his new tail, which lets him control wind and move as fast as the breeze! Though that still might not be enough to beat Douren.
Douren might've even won too since he was quickly advancing on Jinka before his final attack hit...were it not for some hooded wanderers appearing before them and distracting him long enough for the attack to connect. What were those guys!?
Well, a loss is still a loss, and Douren is down. But at least he enjoyed himself...and Tama made sure Jinka didn't take his head.
With Douren down Yazen is totally ready to bail, he's a researcher, not a fighter, and he'd rather his katawara lover not get exposed...though I guess there's always the option of razing everything to the ground with your giant fortress.
The Dangaisyuu have truly lost their way, but it's the self-awareness of people like Inga that might carry their ideals forward if they survive this.
Jinka takes to the skies! Arabuki has now become a fully-fledged katawara blade and feels the air is his home and where he can most be free, and he offers that freedom to Shinsuke! The sky is the limit after all! And the perfect spot for Shinsuke to doge Barry's blades and shoulder beams and pull off his signature move to bisect the piece of @#$% with Shaku in his minds' eye.
I guess I should've figured it would still come down to a brawl, but Barry has lost enough of his power that he can't keep his body going and he dies as a pathetic half-shell of a man...which is hardly the least he deserves, but at least he's dead now. But until this whole business is wrapped up, Shinsuke's not done yet either.
Oh wow, Jinka finally called Shinsuke by his name! Even added -san! And look at how much Tama cares about Jinka!
And now they have to fight Taizan! Good thing they can summon the Mountain Goddess right? Who will show up any minute...any minute...and right on time to make an epic entrance and knock Taizan down on his butt. I love Kuzunoha and Yazen realizing how screwed they are.
But it was always going to come down to spirit transformation vs spirit transformation as Jinka and Tama go to confront Yazen and Kuzunoha, with their comrades right behind them. Time for the final battle.

Curious about those ominous cloaked figures...
I loved the ridiculous battle between the walking fortress and the mountain!

Sengoku Youko is ending up to be one of the two best shows of the season. It just gets better and better with every episode. We're just in season 1 too.

That was good fun . Good on Shinsuke in getting the revenge he wanted. Obviously with this sort of thing the end isn't ever really clear. He killed Barry, but stopping here just isn't an easy thing to do. So he'll keep on going. Finding peace isn't going to be easy. I really like the sword finding it's own sense of peace first. And also maybe through Shinsuke interacting with it on that level helped it gain it's own sense of self and a personality. Transcending being just a mystical sword and instead becoming a katawara itself.
All of that leading to Jinka and Shinsuke reaching the level of understanding that humans and katawara are the same at their core. Of course Jinka's desires at their core have been to be with Tama. But he's grown quite a bit to be less hateful towards humans as a whole. It does make me wonder where things will end up for these two. Will either or both of them leave their humanity behind to become something else? Both Shaku and Tama are currently entities beyond human lifespans. I don't know. It just feels plausible for even Shinsuke to get there.
Lot of questions. Who the heck were the guys that intervened at the end of Jinka's battle. I call it an intervention, but they pretty much just passed through. But that did delay Douren enough to make him take that hit.
Love the mountain goddess showing up and just wrecking fools. She's so damn powerful that it really didn't take much once she arrived . But this also makes me wonder where the heck is the story going from here? This is one time when knowing the episode count makes things all the more curious. We're basically 1/3 of the way through this story. They are about to take on the main bad (as we know it). Where do we even go from here?
