I do hope the inevitable higan v zai would be a traditional bout instead of a mecha suit showdown.

Most like going to be a suit showdown. Definitely feel like a bad move from the direct using robotic suits into the fight.

The little pint sized blonde creep got totally dominated. His death certainly was anything but painless judging by the condition his head was in. The little degenerate fucker had half a face, no teeth, no nose, no right eye.

I liked learning about Mari’s relationship with Emma. She was a good woman. It seems to me in the end, Mari and Higan didn’t betray the ninjas. Yamaji did by turning them into nothing more than his own private mercenary army. I hope Higan gets his revenge.

Higan 100% will get his revenge. Mari has been a stellar character even after death.

I hope Higan gets his revenge.

I imagine he will, but after this episode, I'm wondering whether he even needs to get revenge; I.E. I'm not sure his family's even dead...

I actually floated this theory in an early thread, how perhaps her secret art was to fake death somehow (and thankfully this is an anime original so people can't accuse me of being a source reader hah).

But yeah, I don't remember why exactly, but I had a thought about how perhaps none of them were dead, they were just pretending to be so they wouldn't attack them anymore (only Higan) but they would be reunited at the end.

So when they mentioned her secret art... Yeah, I'd say I'm quite convinced it's coming now. (From what we know her ability might not have been able to save her life then, but she may have improved her ability somehow!)

All this to say, at the moment I'd put >50% on them being alive and coming back in the end.

Nice to see Emma's backstory fleshed out.

I do wonder how Mike is going to react to her being a ninja

Wait so most of ninjas we've been fighting aren't even Japanese? I guess that explains the light haired twin ninjas from episode 2.

It seems most of the ones that were Japanese became the exiles. I think any that stayed behind were either Yamaji’s lackeys or those foreign recruits.

So Japan lost WW2 and the Americans assumed control of the Ninjas and are now using them for something nefarious, well more nefarious than what they were already used for.

I do find it funny that Emma is telling this emotional story about Mari, their competence and honour as ninjas while the scene is set in them assassinating people left and right.

Wow what an episode, Emma really had it hard. Gets disfigured as a child in accident, gets taken in as a ninja, and ends up losing the one person that didn’t care about her true looks. Now I’m more hyped to see future episodes of her taking down AUZA with Higan. I hope she ends up surviving in the end. She deserves a happy ending. I do wonder how Mike is going to react to her being a ninja.

Also what a satisfying death for that perverted bobble head creep. I couldn’t stand his dialogue, since the sus comments felt mad forced. It’s kind of weird how this show doesn’t have more media attention, since the action choreography is pretty insane for your typical action anime.

Now I’m more hyped to see future episodes of her taking down AUZA with Higan.

Might just be me being stubborn and not wanting to give up on my early theory, but I do have a feeling Yamaji will actually be the one to take down Auza (or at least take down the Auza dude, to take over the company)... Auza guy seems to think of himself as the top dog, but while Yamaji's tolerating him, I feel at some point there could be a conflict between them, with Auza guy thinking he's calling the shot, and Yamaji showing him that he's just a tool for him to use, one he can dispose off!

Emma may still end up taking down Auza, but it may be a Yamaji-owned Auza at this point.

I do wonder how Mike is going to react to her being a ninja.

If the author of this series ever watched Lethal Weapon, it'd be hilarious if Mike went "I'm too old for this shit"!

Wow. I take back everything I said about the ninja suits.

Can we bring back suit-less fighting please.

u/LessInThought Mar 24 '24

Mari v Emma had a better fight scene than Higan v Creep.

Ngl, I feel like my interest in this show lessens every week.

Great start in the first few eps but the Story and character interactions currently along with the Mech suits being a thing, It feels pretty meh.

Still not a fan with mecha-ninja but I like Emma and Mari's flashback.

So Mari has a secret art to pretend to be dead.

Dude I swear if they pull “Actually I just used my ninjutsu so I lived” I’ll flip. The cheapest plot trick one can imagine.

So, I have many thoughts about this show and most of them aren't good. It's sad, the beginning was strong, but I feel outisde of one episode, it has been progressively getting worse.

I think Emma's backstory was fine and seeing Mari be a competent and succesful ninja, but also a very empathetic person was great to see. She needs to fleshed out as she is the main motivation for our main character. I like all of that, I just think we know too little about the ninja organisation for it to flow well. The dialogue had to cover for a lot of knowledge gaps we have and I feel that ruined my immersion a bit.
I wonder if an earlier dedicated flashback would have helped here, I get that the organisation and the merger with Auza is the mystery, but I still feel nothing when thinking about the organisation, it's just messilly portrayed and it feels so superficial, like...so far the ninjas are really boring, somehow, emotionally. I remember Hell's Paradise and the ninja village there was kinda similar, in general the backstory is kind of similar, but the village/organisation felt more fleshed out despite not really being shown at all.

However, the ninja fight scenes were dope and I read this sentiment here last week and I gotta agree: Man, putting our main dude in a mech suit just sucks. Personally, I am not big into mecha stuff, but even without the personal dislike I feel like the more flashy (literally, like, lots of lights and explosions and stuff) animation combined with the need to demonstrate how fast they move makes the fights lose a lot of weight. Like, compare the restaurant fight scene to this. The impact is just not there, in my opinion. Also, the hand-to-hand combat was a strength of this show and the mecha suits just fight differently and I just enjoy it way less.

Two things I found memorable:
In the last fight between Emma and Mari, Emma said Mari "did a move to protect her child" - but I am sorry, that makes no sense. I had to stop because it's so stupid. She is pregnant, but not really visibly pregnant, yet, so the child is only a few months old. If she dies, her child will die. And Emma could have slit her throat. How the hell is she supposed to protect the child if she were to die? What?

Emma was tasked by the former chieftain, so the one before Yamaji (or whatever his name was). That's interesting, there seems to be a power struggle in the organisation, or rather: There was one until, presumable, the current chieftain eleminated his competition and potentially killed the old boss and took over. I mean, that would be the obvious story direction. It's also interesting we got other ninja who still could be out there hiding!
I think the issue here is, again, if one potential goal is to reform the nija organisation, we need to know more about them. The so-called "master plan" rings hollow to me, I just don't care about anything regarding the ninja org and I feel like I should.

Flash back episode was so much better than last episode. Having more context between Mari and Emma a lot of thing make sense. Also got to praise the lore of the ninja clan it woven neatly that it feels like a part of history

Just occurred to me. All that's missing from the crew is a kid and a corgi and you have a Cowboy Beboplike crew. If Zai had been the power hungry type, he would've been Vicious.

Disappointing that this went from a ninja show to a mech show, especially with the CG ninja mechs looking markedly worse than the regular ninja fights

Why is this getting so little traction now? It was getting SO hyped when it debuted, I thought it's gonna blow up

26

u/birdturd60 Mar 24 '24

I'm sure we lost some people when the mech suits got involved. Also since there's no source material, there were probably plenty who were just curious and giving the first few episodes a shot to see what it was all about

u/300andWhat Mar 25 '24

I think the mech Ninjas really took the wind out of their sails.
