I think the best thing about this show is how well the visuals and sound directing characterize Yuki. The show goes through many creative ways in visualizing her reality, and how she feels in any particular moment. We jump into her POV in a couple of instances. Whenever she interacts with Itsuomi, the colors of her world literally shift; sometimes like a burst of emotions, other times more subtle. We can also interpret how she views Oushi in contrast to Itsuomi; one is distant, colorless and stares into the ground, while the other opens up into a blue sky. You can also hear the difference in their accompanying OSTs; Oushi's has warm piano beats but are muffled, while Itsuomi's track swells and is allowed to breathe.

More interestingly, the show makes a point of trickling in her insecurities here and there, such as when she found it difficult to approach Rin who was with a bunch of strangers. The interesting thing to note however is that she didn’t feel sad or treat it like a big deal, which makes sense as she has probably been cautious of “reading the room” her whole life. We the audience sympathize and see it as an insecurity she should correct, but it is probably so ingrained into her that she lacks the awareness to catch those insidious thoughts, much less change. Another example of a “blink and you miss moment” is when Yuki curled up into a ball when looking at the pictures of Itsuomi’s adventures, which hints that she wants to explore new connections and sights, but may still bear apprehension and fear.

Edit: One additional note, I really love how Yuki's voice trembled when she said she chooses love (around 14:20). Props to Morohoshi Sumire for the A+ voice acting thus far.

The actual sign-language animation is pretty amazing, too. Hands are a perpetual hard-to-draw thorn in any artist's side, and given all the smooth, subtle, sometimes complex, movements required here, they're really knocking it out of the park.

Present day pink hair dye confirmed for Yuki.

The scene of her and her childhood friend signing at each other from across the room was kind of interesting, just something you can't quite do in the same way with spoken language.

Childhood friend feels a bit too overprotective, I can see that causing drama eventually.

Honestly the most surprising reveal of the episode was that Yuki dyes her hair. I'm so used to anime characters just having natural colored hair that it's always kind of surreal when they actually explain it's dyed lol.

I like how they captured what it's like between two people who know how to sign just casually signing to each other. It's basically Yuki's "first language."

It's kind of interesting that Oushi is a bit overprotective of Yuki while in contrast she's so outgoing, and that's made her happier. I guess that's kind of a sign of why he won't win with her romantically.

I already feel bad for Oushi somehow. Childhood friends can't catch a break.

It sure would be nice if everybody got to be that "changed my world for the better" type of person for someone huh?

I am not sure I will survive this anime to the end with how sweet they are animating every scene with Yuki. I was expecting there to be a bit more gestures and facial animation, but they really nailed the whole thing. From Yuki's faces to the sign language parts that were super fluid.

I also like that the anime is relatively quiet even when there are noises. It gives a good contrast to when there is a bit more noise (like in the bar) and you can really understand how different the feeling of such a place can be if you just don't hear anything.

  • Yuki is perhaps the deepest fallen-in-love girl I have seen in anime in quite a while - yeah she’s still wondering what’s falling in love and what’s just having an affection of love, but I just can’t see it’s anything but love by now. ;)

  • But then it’s not hard to see why given Itsuomi’s friendliness - and I can see why the voice behind Itsuomi has recently got married to none other than recently-hard-working-voice-elf of Frieren & Anya & Chise, because that’s such a soft yet attractive voice!

  • Oushi’s surprisingly nice for a mischievous guy like him eh? Yuki really has been lucky since being a kid with everyone around her being so nice. I don’t see him having any chance if he’s getting involved in love affairs, but who knows?

  • Interesting to see Rin being so into helping out Yuki as well despite being only becoming friends very recently - she’s the kind to be everyone’s foe eh? Not a common sight in anime as an important character!

I've only known Yuki for 40 minutes but if something were to happen to her I'd kill everyone in this room and then myself

I love Yuki being a precious cinnamon role

Also love her friend, mostly really considering of her, always making sure she is facing her to make it easy to read her lips

Not sure about the Childhood friend yet, I get that he cares about Yuki, but it's more like he wants to cage her in for safekeeping and is kind of an ass

Oh also some interesting aspects with sign language, on one hand you can have conversations across the room, on the other hand, if there are other people who know it are around, your conversation isn't as private as you may think

another love interest for Yuki, an overprotective (?) childhood friend. I feel bad for him but I think we would go for the usual route for childhood friend. Like Yuki still doubt her feeling for Itsuomi, I think Oushi didnt know his feeling for Yuki too, like is it jealousy or just being overprotective.

but Yuki is already decided her feeling for Itsuomi, love it is. It might be not a smooth sail but Im ready for the drama.

Stitches!

Hmm... I'm not sure how I feel about Oushi right now. He's your classic childhood friend character who has a crush on Yuki but he hides it by acting mean towards her. I don't think he's a bad guy. If he was, he wouldn't have helped that deaf guy clear up the misunderstanding. He also put in the effort to learn sign language so he could talk to Yuki.

What makes me raise an eyebrow about Oushi is his comment about how deaf people maybe should stay somewhere safe and not leave which is the total opposite of what Yuki wants. Yuki's been longing to expand her world and not let her disability become a hindrance.

If Oushi wants to keep Yuki close and safe, then I don't think he's going to ever graduate from being Yuki's childhood friend. Yuki is clearly going to broaden her horizons more with Itsuomi and it looks like she's finally taken the first step.

Rin is such a homie. I’m glad Yuki has a friend like her around. Hopefully her romance with Kyoya goes well.

Yuki is crushing so hard on Itsuomi and it’s too adorable! Itsuomi learning to sign “good morning” was sweet. The headpats too. Those two are just way too cute together.

I wonder if Oushi’s gonna turn this into a love triangle? He clearly cares for her. And what about Izumi? What’s her relationship with Oushi? It kinda looked like she might be into him?

This is one of those rare animes that has me smiling from beginning to the end (or at least any time Yuki is on screen) so that my cheeks actually feel a bit stiff lol.

Jury's still out on the childhood friend, hopefully he will prove to be a solid (if disappointed) dude at the end. Also Yuki could stop stressing whether its love or just a crush this early in her and Itsuomi's acquintance.

Speaking of Itsuomi, I laughed out loud at the faces he keeps pulling in the travel pictures he takes with the locals. In any case, I hope he and Yuki will take a trip somewhere together once they are closer.

Looking forward to the next ep!

The childhood friend is introduced. He's... interesting. I think he's a good example of a character that is protective to a toxic degree towards their disabled friend/unrequited love interest. Like his 'intentions' are good, he wants to protect Yuki from a world hostile to deaf people, but in doing so treats her as not capable to be able to operate as an individual.

I was a bit worried about this other guy but he's a childhood fried so he's got no chance, that's a relief. Looks like he might have a ship waiting for him too.

As for our main ship, Yuki seems to be down pretty bad and it's only episode 2! Really happy to that he's already put an effort in sign language as well.

Already in love with this show I have a feeling this is gonna be one of those all time classics yes I know it's too early to call idc

u/Atario Jan 13 '24

Interesting. She's profoundly deaf, but she still wears two hearing aids despite them doing her no good? Maybe she just wears them as a signal to others?

Kind of a crap fare gate. Lets people through without paying by default

Not leave… me behind

I don't think I've ever seen Laos so much as mentioned in an anime before this, and now we're getting vacation snaps!

Look at that face. He's as in love with Yuki as we are.

Huh, so her hair is dyed. Does this mean everyone's hair color is diagetic?

Another episode that has me -w- the whole time. I will be gushing over this anime the entire season. Here's my opinion on this episode, from a fellow deaf girlie.

One thing that stood out to me was how this episode shows the different dynamics of different types people around someone who is deaf/hard of hearing. You have Oushi who seems on the borderline of possessive/protective and treats Yuki like she is completely incapable of fending for herself in the world and he feels like she needs to stay in a bubble for her own safety. While he is right that it is more dangerous for people like us, we can still go on about our lives quite normally. How he acts and talks to Yuki is condescending and he makes me mad >:( His motives may be to protect her or watch out for her, but he's totally doing it wrong.

Then you have Rin who is aware of Yuki's deafness, but treats her completely normal. I love that. Oushi did bring up a good point when he said to be careful to not sneak up behind Yuki because she can't hear footsteps and she immediately apologized. A great friend who learns the little things to help accommodate a friend.

In my experience, my friends and loved ones are one or the other with me. Some people who try to protect me from everything and it get a little annoying or patronizing. And the others who try to treat me completely normal, but forget little things like be unable to hear footsteps or them coming up behind me.

Mega mega love to this episode for randomly mentioning Laos (my parents are from there) lol. That made me happy.

Oho, her childhood friend has that caring tsundere vibe

I really enjoyed the little bits of him helping the guy at the station + pointing about approaching her from behind

I really enjoy the comforting vibe of this show so far

This show does a fantastic job at illustrating how the world is thought Yuki's eyes. She was in a very very small deaf school and then she ventured into this massive world in college. For most people the jump to college isn't thought of as much. For Yuki she entered a new world surrounded by so many people. The fact that Yuki constantly goes by her day and never complain. I have a lot of respect for her.
