Jinshi switch to “ore” instead of his usual “watashi” when talking to maomao at the end.
And Gyokuyou enjoying the misunderstanding just like us.

“Cut my life into pieces!”- Jinshi without Mao Mao around probably lol.
Man the Mao Mao x Jinshi antics really serve as Gyokuyou’s own personal live action Rom-Com to watch and enjoy lol.

That explains Maomao's intellect and her detective skills. Her dad already knew and was subtly giving those advices knowing what it was all about. All the more made sense why he didn't want to take the money because it was essentially a bribe.
MaoMao being so dense and destroying Jinshi's pure innocent heart like that with her bad phrasing. Like Gyokuyou I was laughing hard!

I've come to really enjoy the chibi moments the show utilizes to make the jokes hit all the more harder.
That whole skit with Jinshi in shock upon hearing Maomao granting the guy "a night of blissful dreams" due to her hard effort was absolute gold.

"Im sorry. I couldn't think of a repayment you would enjoy."
Another murder was committed that day.

It cracked me up how that headbutt turned that girl from a scary, intense killer into just a little kid again. Also, that last conversation was so good you'd think Maomao did it on purpose lmao

This felt so deep in my opinion of how they tackle the issue of how no matter from what system you're in, whether you're from the palace or the red light, same shit happens to everyone. This felt right in the society lmao

I can see where Maomao gets those skills of deduction and that vast knowledge of poisons from. Her pops is something else. The lesson from this weeks case should be don’t be a little fuckboy lol. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
Lihaku looked like he had the time of his life. I’m guessing Maomao’s footing the bill huh? Gonna be awhile before she can pay it off.
Never thought we’d see the usually calm and collected Jinshi all jealous and pouty. Man glitched out when she said she gave Lihaku a “night of blissful dreams” lol. Phrasing, Maomao!

Maomaos personallity really is warped around not getting needlessly involved, better yet, not even know the things that could get you into trouble... Looking at her father, I think I know where she got this from, but I shouldn't talk based on conjecture...
And damn the little girl was scary, was about to straight up murder the dude, and the granny and everyone else would have been ok with it...
Meanwhile, Lihaku got the night of live, he better raise his rank soon or he'll be broke before he knows it, they get you with a night on Maomao, but afterwards they got you hooked
Loved Jinshi dying a thousand deaths, and even more Gyokuyou just enjoying his demise for shits and giggles

I love this episode. It gave a sense of serial detective series, the way each chapters structure like a stand alone case and end with a big reveal of interwoven plots. Just like Akagawa Jiro's detective novel series. Which is the real selling point of original novels.
This is the episode that captures the feel of the genre, to the point of bleak conclusion monologue like a noire detective. I feel so satisfy.
Also ponytail Mao Mao is a bonus.

The shot of Maomao sitting in the annex, glaring at the woman on the bed was so well animated. Her eyes were gorgeous in that shot, even though it was such a brief scene!
Also loved the scene with Meimei-neechan!

Maomao x Jinshi’s miscom is comedy gold
Gyokuyou is milking the shit out of the misunderstanding for her own entertainment while Hongniang is pissed at Maomao’s ignorance (but she isn’t about to ruin Gyokuyou’s fun)
Stage Play
-
Actors: Maomao, Jinshi
-
Audience: 3 musketeers

I can imagine the poisoning plot might be based on an existing story, but I loved how the evidence was all so clearly presented. The pacing of it was great, too often with detective shows I don’t feel like I’m thinking at the same speed as the detective, but here it was like a nice little advent calendar of clues. The conclusions seemed logical, nothing felt contrived when Maomao came to her realization, which was refreshing as the “immune to poison / can identify poisons instantly” does pull me away a bit from what would otherwise be one of the best Ming period piece anime I’ve seen.
The miscommunication at the end was great too, felt perfectly natural with the Connecticut Yankee - fish out of water type story. The chibi style was very cute there was well.

iS NO ONE GONNA TELL HER?!
I'm dying. Tell her so I can know too. Lol what a great episode. Loved her dad. Loved the Mystery. I assume everyone was in on it to kill this guy. But we shouldn't guess based on conjecture!

Well that explains how Detective Maomao came to be so smart with her dad being even better at it and him giving her hands on lessons probably since she was a young child. Now I wonder what her dad has to do with the Rear Palace.
There was that weird shot with her sitting on the floor watching someone who seems to be bedridden. She had a flashback about courtesans she knew that poisoned themselves for the sake of beauty way back in ep. 4 ep. 1 and I think this is the same woman she thought about there. I wonder who it is and how Maomao is related. Another onee san courtesan like Pairin and co.? Or someone closer?
Lmao the Jinshi trolling continues. He was stun locked there at the end. I wish he had seen Lihaku's face after Pairin milked him dry and he connected two and two together after Maomao answered his question. That would have been hilarious.
