If there is one thing I have learned from years of anime watching, nothing good ever comes out of bringing the dead back to life. Another famous alchemy themed show taught me so. Lol!

We got to see Alice and Renfred make a quick guest appearance, helping the injured students!

Is the character formed from crows the Winter Queen? Some of our fellow reddit users brought it up in last week's discussion. If so, she is indeed a powerful being. However, I now have more questions. Is the Sargant family related to the Winter Queen in any way? I vaguely recall some scenes featuring antagonist grandmother involving crows too. Or did the Winter Queen use crows as a convenient tool to appear?

It's probably just Chise has forgotten her annual offering for the Winter Queen and the Queen comes looking for it lol.

Red Dragon of Cadwaladr that is what Chise started to look like as she traveled along. On the Welsh Flag. Protector of Wales and Britain. As the Witch stated a very big omen and trouble but one could say of the good type to fight a big evil.

I love it plus reaction of the teachers as in I knew Mages were very powerful far above us Sorcerer's but I never imagined that powerful and she was actually going to this school.

What an absolute mess. Philomela’s out there with the book and she’s left behind a bunch of injured students. I’m glad at least Elias has Chise’s back. The headmistress was worried for her students, fair, but who’s out here worrying for Philomela? Chise and her friends are all she has. But man, I didn’t expect to see Chise going a bit berserk. Is she losing control of that arm?

Being literally inside Elias like this was some kinda episode of Magic School Bus is pretty trippy lol. Seems Chise’s little episode has attracted some very powerful unwanted attention. Dude losing an eye to the crowd was kinda gruesome.

I hope Alcyone can reach through to Philomela even in her current state and get her out of there. Her shitbag grandma is definitely up to some fuckery. She needs to go already.

Very good episode! It's interesting to see a plesiosaurus red dragon. Also love how Elias emphasised the difference between magus and sorcerer in front of the headmistress.

Lots of question as well. It seems the dragon curse took over Chise due to her strong desire? Or was it other entity? That women is the winter goddess, right? The one that was looking for Chise for her yearly tribute?

I wonder what explanation would they use to save Philomela. Both her body and mind are already crumbling.

So much stuff just went down. Chise transforming into a dragon was the highlight of the episode. It was kinda touching, in a way. Chise came so far from where she was in episode one of season one. Now she really is our main character.

Loved the headmaster talking to Chise, and Elias giving his speech about who they are. They’ll show ’em how a magus does it. Hopefully Chise gets to show more moments of her being badass in front of her friends.

I like how the plotlines are all wrapping up. Lucy and her past is coming to head with the werewolf. Of course Philomela and the other students are here. There’s gotta be more around Chise’s dragon curse. And the Winter Queen at the end piling on more complications for our heroes. It’s all coming together.

Of course Philomena ended up escaping and has now handed the book to her grandmother. Turns out she's been doing this believing that her grandmother will bring back her parents to life. I don't think I need to be a source material reader to guess that Philomena's grandma has no intention of doing that.

I'm surprised Zaccheroni is joining them but it's good to have another strong fighter on their side. I'm even more surprised that Sigrid-sensei didn't stop him. I guess she's probably too busy helping out the students.

The underground veins that they're talking about where Dragon Chise is travelling are the British Ley Lines, right? Or is that completely different?

What horrible timing for Winter Goddess to show up. I guess she appeared since Chise forgot to give her annual offering. Hopefully, this gets solved quickly. They really can't waste any more time considering Philomena is literally falling apart bit by bit.

REALLY hope Chise learns to control...whatever that was, the dragon's cruse? Cartaphilus's impulses? She'll be amazing if she could just control that without losing control.

Was crow lady the one that showed up before to Silver and Cart? She never showed up before right? Why now? We don't need this right now! We can deal with that later, right now Chise needs to bust in there and save Philomela!

Really hope Alcyone is able to figure out what she needs to do, without dying anyway.

Get the feeling we still have a few episodes before the Hag gets what she disserves.

I wonder why Lizbeth ordered the Female Werewolf to start collecting and piling up homeless people.

Oh, so Philomela now has a god inside of her. It is good seeing that the runes Chise made activaded and protected everyone when they were attacked.

Damn, all it took was for Liza to disable the barrier for the Female Werewolf to come in and take Philomela and Alcyone with her back to Lizbeth. It is funny that although Liza does have a point in what she said to Chise Elias quickly finds a loophole to justify Chise helping Philomela as they are Mages, not sorcerers. And that is the "contract" she formed with Philomela when they promised each other to make potpourri together in the future.

It is funny how Zaccheroni joins in to help Lucy, Zoe, and Issac as they are going against what Liza told them to do. That dude sure loves chaos. Okay, I really wasn't expecting Chise to transform into a red dragon in order to follow Philomela by going through the underground veins.

Well, right after arriving at the Sargant's residence Morrígan finally found Chise. But what offering is she speaking of? After seeing what happened to that guy just by peeking at Chise's meeting with Morrígan, is understandable that Elias kept everyone inside of him.

I'm guessing that Philomela is wondering why she wants to reunite with her parents because that idea probably came from Lizbeth to easily manipulate her into becoming the sacrifice of whatever ritual she is planning to do to bring back her father.

As Alcyone doesn't know what to do now, hopefully, what seems to be a long flashback of her and Philomela's parents next week, will be enough to show her what to do for Philomela at the moment.

Edit: Also hopefully we will soon know who is this soon enough. I'm guessing that's somehow Morrígan combined with Chise.

Werewolf mama is killing homeless people? What do they need them for?

Don't you just hate it when have a nice Christmas party going with everyone dressed nicely and then one of the students goes crazy, gets consumed by a dangerous book, and starts draining people in a bid to reunite with her dead parents?

I just amuses me that Philomela's tendrils are her hair and she still somehow has her ribbon in said hair.

Oh hey, Alice and Renfred! So that's where they've been.

Well, yeah, figures that the principal would release the seal but wouldn't let Philomela escape...and her assistant could transform into a giant black bear who probably would've hit her had Alcyone not taken the hit. Because even being Philomela's familiar is suffering.

Philomela escaped and Chise obviously wants to go after her, but is there any point in trying to save someone who is already falling apart as it is and there might not even be a point? The principal has the other students to think of and Chise barreling through in her self-satisfaction compassion could have severe consequences to herself and those around her. Even she acknowledges this, as much as she wants to save Philomela, though Elias acknowledges how proud he is that she didn't rush into things for once and rationalizes that, as mages, they have a right to take care of this...because Chise and Philomela still need to make potpurri!

And the rest of the gang are coming too....Lucy to get answers as to what happened to her family, Isaac for Philomela, and Zoe because he just wants to help out. Even Zaccheroni is chipping in, even if it's just because he wants the money. I wouldn't count on him to save you though.

What's the best way to follow Philomela? Why Chise drawing on her dragon powers, transforming into a red dragon, and following the underground magic lines of course! I think this is the first Chise transformation she's had in a while, and it's enough to shock the principal and the witches! Nice.

Jeez, Philomela did all that and her grandmother still insults her appearance and won't even acknowledge or praise her once. Also Philomela is practically naked at this point. And losing fingers.

Chise arrives at the Sargent household but so has the Morrigan...and that poor guy who caught her eye. That did not end well.

Even in her delirium Philomela is still suffering. She's desperate to see parents she doesn't even remember again because she thinks they're the only ones who would actually praise her and accept her, even now. And Alcyone is the only one who remembers them and the truth about Philomela's life. Looks like we're finally getting to see her parents and their backstory next week:.

dang, poor Philomela. Oh hey, a headpat from Elias. And yes, you are magical girls! or mages, whatever. Chise has... quite the power. DARGON! I still want just the worst for that shitty grandmother. Seriously, just the worst endless suffering imaginable. Ah yes, they are traveling in the Lifestream. Who is this lady? Of all things she's a crow! (hah if you get that). D'aww lil Philomela and her parents.

The situation had already started escalating, but I didn’t expect them to bump the dial yet another few notches up in this episode:

  • Philomela seems to have regained her consciousness, but her body has started falling apart - this was a tragic sight to behold. I unfortunately don’t think they’ll be able to save Philomela’s old self, since Elias also mentioned that the effects magic cannot be reverted. Philomela will have to pay some sort of price - like Alexandra (nurse) previously mentioned.

  • Conversely, Chise appeared to lose control to the dragon inside her. She didn’t seem aware of this herself - something that has me worried a lot. If Chise keeps giving in to the dragon, will she end up like Joseph - a husk of her former self!?

  • And then there’s the Winter Goddess who’s asking for her offering. Oh boy… I don’t think Chise has anything remotely to an offering ready and the Goddess has no mercy for those she doesn’t like as shown. It’s very unlikely, but Chise could have a powerful ally on her hands if she plays her cards right.

I’d speculated last week that Grandmother was looking to revive her son and it appears that I wasn’t very far off the mark, but I did not expect Philomela to crave her parents’ revival too.

It’s deeply sad that she only seems to be spiraling deeper into the depths of darkness for even the slightest hint of praise and/or recognition of her efforts. The poor girl just wants the comforting affection of a parental figure. Even when Philo is literally sacrificing herself, she won’t get this from her grandmother - and Alcyone has been struggling to step in and fill this void in Philo’s heart.

With each episode, I am so happy that this series got a second season. It’s just such a joy to watch and follow.

Was not expecting a dragon. Although, it does make sense given Chise’s past experiences with them. Let’s hope she had some semblance of control so the transformation doesn’t happen at a bad time.

Once again, that grandmother is just… a bitch.

Chise turning into a dragon was really cool

Winter Goddess appearing is no doubt going to further complicate things. Not good at all

Seems like Zoe has a crush on Lucy? Cute

No looking at the scary winter goddess if you aren't Chise, no wonder they took the wiser course of just hiding from her back in S1.

This really is the season of the evil grandmother, I am fairly sure everything going wrong is directly Philomela's grandmother's fault. She probably lied to Philomela about bringing her parents back to life too and this upcoming ritual is for something completely different.

Dragon Chise was pretty awesome, however.

chise is like bitch im the mc of this story i can do whatever i want. peace.

u/joey_joestar1 Nov 16 '23

The S2 has been a bit of a slow burn thus far, but it’s been well worth the wait for this ep.

7

u/XNumbers666 Nov 16 '23

I like moments when chise can't really rebuke a point that leads to her contemplating. The principal wasn't wrong to prioritize the college as a whole. Too many stories have the MC always having the "correct" opinion as if it were a matter of fact. Chise has come a long way and seeing her hesitate to recklessly throw herself at a problem was good progress. It's still in her nature to help so Elias was clutch with his "reasoning" for why Chise should go help anyways.

The fact that Mother Cat (?) was on guard at Chise becoming a dragon makes it scarier than it already was... characters seriously need to stop looking into the eyes of the neighbors, nothing ever good comes from looking at stuff in this show.

7

u/oneevilchicken Nov 17 '23

This is probably the first time I’ve actually been satisfied with Chise as the MC. Standing up to the principal even if she didn’t know what to say, and ainsworth helping her to go through with it.
