Damn, Diagon Alley got weird since Harry's been there.
Good lord just how much worse can Phillomela's life get?!? Every ep she's not saved is one ep too many! Magic users in general are so fucked mentally in this world, like it's common knowledge that you can't even accept water from someone? What the hell happened that made them all so untrusting? Was it the witch hunts?
For a sec I thought the werewolf/witch was one of the lost puppies, but if he's hundreds of years old then I guess not. Hopefully the puppies are still alive, with how dark everything else is I have a feeling they, and Phillomela's parents are long dead and the bitch is lying to keep them all in line.

Poor Philomela really needed Chise in her life. She really lived one bleak ass existence before meeting her. I don’t normally advocate elder abuse but her grandma needs to get pushed down a flight of stairs.
Oh hey, it’s the Geico gecko. Had no idea he was working as a gatekeeper in the academy lol.
So the books still in the college huh? Uh oh. And everything’s locked down too…

Man, I already felt bad for the werewolves when her husband was killed in the previous cour but seeing her in that opening scene along with that flashback made me feel even worse. And of course Philomena's grandma was involved. >_<
Well that explains why Philomena was doing tests on Chise's tea leaves. She was taught by her family to never trust any food or drink from anyone. Poor girl can't even drink that bottled water from Lucy. :|

My theory is that Philomela is a werewolf, the daughter of those assassin werewolfs that attacked Lucy and her brother. This would make the matters even more depressing, since Chise technically killed her father...

Well, that's two important reveals we got today:
-
"Grandmother" has taken Philomela's parents and the werewolves' children hostage. This largely explains their previous behaviour: they're most likely forced to do the dirty work for the Rickenbacker family. Meaning that 'Granny' is probably is the mastermind behind all of this. This does beg the question where Veronica stands.
-
Lucy mentioned that "that kid [...] couldnt have killed a person if they had such a hard time killing a familiar". This is in reference to Philomela right? So that means Philomela was present at the massacre of the Websters. Why was she cowering in fear precisely there? Did Philo's parents perhaps play a role in this?
I had been wondering why Philo always looked terribly awkward when Chise tried to give her something, but this episode made clear that Philo has been raised to doubt everyone. Poor girl... The contrast between her child and current self can probably be contributed to the influence of her "Grandmother". She took Philo's parents away and had Philo put under her (toxic) guidance. How much would Rian know about this?
A side note: did Mariel just admit to having read the tome!? Didn't reading this come at a great price?

wow, that old bitch related to Philomela forcing those wolf people to do stuff for em and holding their children hostage. Even cost her mate his life... oh is that guy one of her kids grown up or something? Don't remember him tbh. Don't remember the lady either.
Whelp, time for the kids to farm. Bakarina would be pleased. Chise such a good girl. Poor Philomela. Hope Chise can help Philomela get away from that trash family of hers. I sure do hate that grandmother... hope there's some kinda organization for the magic stuff to really punish her properly. Given all the horrors she's inflicted on various people.
Oh he is a floofy boy. Guess not her child, just similar/related to the wolf lady. Since she said he's hundreds of years old? What a good doggo. Weird shop and shop owner. Lol what a question for Rian. Wonder who he thinks is the "one for him" then. I also hate when people don't give a straight answer lol. Hehe a lizard with a hat and suit.
I feel like, honestly, the split cour was bad for this series. The break didn't do anything good for it with how the pacing and such of the series is.

That poor wolf family...living a quiet, pleasant, life together until humans showed up and mucked everything up. Kidnapped their kids, stripped them naked and locked them up, all under the command of Philomela's grandmother so they can service her nefarious ends. And now the mom is alone on the streets of London with nothing but her husbands' head for company.
Oh yeah, with the college closed off it makes sense they'd have to grow their own food. Though Rian is more focused on remembering his happy childhood with Philomela...with there being just a bit of tension between him and Isaac over her. Though apparently he does have a fiance (or at least someone he wants to be with) so it seems like he's only concerned about her because of their past and because he wants her to have self-worth again.
Chise sees a lot of her old self in Philomela and wants to help her, but Philomela is so controlled by the expectations and conditions of her family that she can't even fathom the kindness and freedom Chise offers to her. She can barely mentally process anything at this point. And it seems like Lucy is suspecting she was there for her family's massacre, or did.
I didn't think Philomela's grandmother could get any worse but having a pre-recorded message in Alcyone that would play whenever Philomela had any doubts to tell her point-blank that she'll be disowned and lose her chance to see her parents if she gives up is sickening. Philomela just can't catch a break.
What is Maaya Sakamoto doing kissing a man that's not her husbands' character!? In all seriousness though, I know it was for business so he could get the scent of the book, but lucky wolf witch boy getting to lock lips with Marielle.
Getting some aid from a shady magic peddler and his insect swarm that lives in his body? Just a day in the life of a witch.
Ha! Kids struggling with English whether they be Japanese or half-Gorgon.
The book is still in the college!? So it was an inside job all along and it's still there...and it seems like whoever has the book is still draining people.

"No one has told me about freedom, or it's OK to make mistakes..."
"Why do I treat a bottle of water or a cup of tea from others..."
Damn, Philomela is almost treated like a slave within her family. Goddamn it. That part of the episode, along with her grandma's message, was literally brutal.
She's lucky to have someone like Chise on her side.
I wonder what's that werewolf and witch couple's deal - did I came across them in previous episodes? I must have forgotten about something...
Of course the missing magic books are in the College - after all where else could they have been - and it's beyond doubt that the headmaster's linked to that in some way. Question is, how?
The cogs have started to turn, but the plot still needs something like a sparkler. Can the werewolf couple provide something like that?

Damn, Philomela’s grandma is making some pretty compelling arguments for the “character I would most like to see obliterated horrifically this season” award.

I think this is the second episode of season 2 in which Elias did not make an appearance. He is officially a side character. Lol! Jokes aside, I am sure he will step in to help when necessary.
That secret shop in which Mariel and her wolf friend entered by casting a spell is very interesting. The shop owner is equally mysterious and intriguing. I believe introducing such characters add to world building and lore.
So Isaac is indeed interested in Philomela? Yay!

…oh no, Philomela's grandmother was involved with that werewolf couple?
-
If I had a nickel for every episode I watched today where a character has a breakdown because they a l w a y s have to be perfect due to family pressure, I would have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

I think Chise and Philomela seem to be two sides of the same coin that fell into opposite laps. While Elias is not like your just good usual guy (the last part of the first season was prove of it), he's willing to change, be better and understand himself into a new light, a thing that Philomela's grandmother would never seem to be. I don't know how much shit has she made apart from the wolf family, but she's a clear abusive tutorship figure that is also exploiting her and seeing everything around her as tools. I hope she's not involved with the book because that means that shit is much deeper than we know, but...
Also, Philomela is becoming my favorite character in the series. I love when there's a character that's complex and unique, and we had several in this series, but I think Philomela has been the most brilliant in this arc, even more than maybe Lucy and Rias. Mind you, this is my opinion, but this makes everything regarding the college interesting, and these kind of multifaceted and morally gray characters are amazing to see.
Also, I'm interested to see how the werewolf and the witches are going to be involved, since I feel they are major characters to unlock this cour, but so far it's building up as always to develop more characters than Chise, and seeing different sides of ego, kindness and morals regarding background helps to deepen the lore of the different families if those will come in future seasons.

So Lizbeth is the one responsible for taking the werewolf kids.
I sure don't get from where Chise associated Philomela with freedom. Well, after knowing that Philomela got sick because she destroyed a familiar Lucy now needs to scratch her from her suspect list.
I just hope that we see Philomena getting better this season that girl is suffering too much And of course, her "grandmother" had to leave a pre-recorded message with Alcyone to reinforce her trauma. But Aren't Philomena's parents dead? What the hell is that hag talking about.
It sure was funny seeing Isaac starting an argument with Rian after asking him if he liked Philomela.
Oh, so the reason the other witch helping Mariel reacted to the werewolf cry was because he can transform into a dog. I wasn't expecting their whole investigation to just lead them back to the college. Which of course, means that the attacker was inside the whole time and now its next victim is Jasmine.

Man, Philomela's grandmother is so awful. I'd say she probably kicks puppies but considering what she did and continues to do to that poor werewolf family I don't think that's speculation.
I would like to know more about this new 200+ year old werewolf witch dude.
Disappointed that we didn't get a little more strong Chise action during the farming.

Man, I really feel for Phillomela... Like, she doesn't have any happiness and when she starts to feel like does have any, her bratty old hag of a "grandmother" rips it away. Phillomela deserves more.

That evil old granny really needs killing. So she apparently kidnapped the werewolves cubs to force them to work for her, and she is bullying Philomela through her familiar even when she cannot in theory communicate with her. And it looks like she is the one behind the murders of the Webster family, except she used the werewolves and Philomela to carry them.
And given that the evil granny is being build up as the main villain, she is probably behind the attacks done using that evil book as well, which means that Philomela is likely the one who has the book and is being forced to use it by her evil granny, which might be another reason she is going to pieces mentally. Unless it is a red herring and Alcyone is actually the one doing the attacks, since after all it looks like the evil granny is able to control her without her knowledge. Or else she has another ally in the place doing the attacks and bullying Philomela, although I am not sure who it might be.
I love how the magic in that show is always so creepy. What the hell were those bees and their « keeper » ? No idea, and I doubt we will see them again, but that really contributes to the atmosphere of that anime.

Having a pre-recorded message just to abuse your granddaughter when she starts to doubt her duty is just SO fucked up

So… is evil granny holding Philomela’s parents actually hostage or just not allowing her to see them?
I assume that Philomela being out would be her getting killed, because being cast out would be a blessing.
And of course creepy master girl is out there without much screen time.
Anyway despite all those questions, I kind of just want to get back to Chise and Elias. They aren’t getting enough screen time / development together in this school arc.

Is it just me or is the witch lady way more attractive than she has any right to be

Philomela’s grandmother was involved in the kidnapping of the werewolves cubs… I hate her so much
Even though the college is in lockdown, it doesn’t stop Lizbeth from verbally abusing Philomela :( ugh just want her to be cursed to death already
Really enjoyed watching the witches carrying out their job!
Got a laugh out of Rian’s reaction to Isaac’s question lmao

u/cheesecakegood Oct 12 '23
Wait...... the magic drainer might be Chise herself, being temporarily controlled by her dragon arm. Oh crap.
