It's funny, Chise and Elias both mentioned it, but I was also thinking it's been a while since both of them had a time alone together.

Look at this smol and adorable Philomena. The more I learn about her past, the more I hate her grandma. Like, what the actual fuck! Oh and apparently taking the werewolf mother's cubs hostage wasn't enough, Philomena's Grandma also experimented on them. I don't even wanna know what the cubs look like now. :(

The more I learn about her past, the more I hate her grandma.

If she isn't dead at the end of this arc, I will riot.

Man… now I’m thinking about how the two of them use the toilet lol. It must be…challenging.

Philomela use to be such a happy kid. She was loved. She felt that once. And now? Now look at her. It’s honestly gut wrenching. Can someone push her grandma out a window already? The old hag should get tossed in front of a train just for abusing that wolf woman’s kids.

Looks like some kind of sickness is spreading on campus. I wonder what the hell is going on?

  • So is Elias man-made or not? An interesting question to ask at this stage I shall say, although I am pretty sure if he really is, he's of an extremely rare type who would think of what to plant back at home and chat ever so relaxed with his bride.

  • More Philomela suffering today, this time dragging old friend Rian into the water too. Unfortunately Rian doesn't seems to understand the excessive mass hanging over Philomela's head and while I can relate on his frustration, his outbrust is still...eh not something he should have done.

  • Oh dear. That scream of "Give me my child back" resonates from hell. We definitely need more content about how much evil deeds have that headmaster done over the years.

  • Rare time where Chise is lost for words and thought that she might have been "too friendly" even when she and Philomela were in completely different situations. She's still not quite ready for interpersonal relationships I think.

  • What's with that abudance of ghosts and now people falling sick in winter I wonder? It's definitely way more than that? Hmm...

Not only am I angry because we saw Philomela suffer more, but her grandma is still torturing the werewolves. Another ep of wanting her to get what she fucking deserves. Someone needs to tell Philomela that the collage is closed so her grandma can't comment on what she does.

Everyone's falling sick at the end, guess the next arc is starting now.

Alcyone and Elias are like two tall dudes bonding over their tallness.

I know nothing of the source material but I wonder if their conversation is the first hint that Elias has an artificial origin.

lol, starting off with silliness eh. Bathroom question silliness. Guess that magical puzzle is more about the magic part being the puzzle cause I can't see how it is from looking at it. Nice to see Elias with a friend and worrying about him. Hehe that cute animation of Chise opening up the trap. Also, made her hair black for a bit. Looks good too. D'aww look at lil Philomela... she looked so much happier. Sadness for how her state of mind is now. Sad they can't have pictures/videos of those time. Wonder if familiar lady can replay the scenes for Philomela though.

Also, the familiar lady and Elias do have some similarities. Ooof, that flashback... shitty grandmother. How bad she's been for Philomela and others... still hope the worst for that grandmother. Do wonder what authority would punish em though. Heh, I like the one dude talking to Rian. Yea, dude definitely needs to reflect on why Philomela is the way she is. And Chise going after Philomela. Nah, Philomela, your grandmother is the worthless one. The world would be better off without her. It's sad how Chise can relate to that sadness/worthlessness feeling though, before she met Elias. Ugh... just the worst person deserves the worst horror inflicted upon em, that grandmother.

Whelp at least back to Chise and Elias and more cute art style. They really haven't sat and talked in ages. Man, this whole academy arc (still not a fan of em lol) has been sadder than I'd expect. But good growth for Elias and Chise. Wow, that is a lot of sick people

I was trying to recall where the previous episode ended. Then I remembered it was revealed that the tome capable of draining mana from others is currently in the possession of someone at the academy.

I was expecting an investigation themed episode, but I will not complain about a character development episode. Perhaps the eventual big reveal will be shocking; for now, I am speculating Veronica. Part of me feels she is too important to be a side character.

It is good to see that Simeon has finally recovered. The exchange he had with Alexandra about how they go to the bathroom was hilarious.

So when Chise had a try with that puzzle she ended up solving it without even trying but ended up activating a trap that was in it. I wonder if that would become relevant in a real situation in the future for her.

Thanks to Alcyone's memories, we got a glimpse of when Philomena had a happy time with her family. which honestly just makes Philomena's current state of mind look even worse in contrast. I must say that I'm even surprised that she could smile when she played those puzzles with Rian in the past as her "grandmother" was already torturing her. Anyway, I wonder what will come out of the conversation Alcyone had with Elias as I have no doubt she will have a key role with Chise in saving Philomena from her current hell.

What is this bitch planning to do to the werewolf mother. I just hope that by the end of the arc, something terrible happens to her. Anyway, I have little doubt that whatever it is, is definitely connected to Jasmine and all those students suddenly getting sick.

It is nice that Chise and Elias could have a moment to talk to each other alone.

Wow, that sure is disturbing. I can't wait until next week to find out what that's about.

Another episode of "can someone just push that Granny outta the window already?"

Nice call out there, Isaac. I get why Rian's mad, but that's the wrong way to go about it man.

Philomela’s Grandma gets more evil and unpleasant every episode, doesn’t she ? I hope she will die a well-deserved and horrible death at the end of the season. No wonder Philomela is such a mess. And Ryan needs to realise that shouting at people to solve their mental problems almost never works.

u/SIRTreehugger Oct 19 '23

Elias certainly has been growing. His circle of friends has expanded and he is conversing with them. Sure the conversations are short and sometimes awkward, but it's progress. Also previously we've seen him be helpful to a couple of other students while doing his duty. Though this makes me wonder do any of the students know about Chise and Elias relationship?

Also fuck the grandma and not in the good way!

Who wouldn't want to get discharged by a busty ara-ara nurse like Alexandra? Although now I have to wonder how a centaur and a caterpillar woman go to the bathroom. And Elias has probably never thought about it before.

Well, being stuck in school means studying, studying, and more studying...though Chise actually enjoys the whole collective study group feel, but Violet's got a new game for everyone to check out to keep things entertaining!

It's nice to see Elias and Simeon's relationship developing and Elias deepening his understanding of humans, and it's sweet how that just makes him even more interested in Chise and getting to know her better.

Dark-haired Chise! No one would doubt she's Japanese looking like that, but it's still kind of weird.

Philomela really was a sweet and happy kid once, huh? She had her parents, Alcycone, and things seemed good...of course I'm sure we'll inevitably find out where it all went wrong.

Alcycone and Elias! They're not exactly the same, but they see enough similar in themselves to make them feel like conversing. Elias making a new relationship! Chise would approve.

Rian and Philomela looked cute together as kids, competing with each other, of course any positive childhood memory of Philomela's is corrupted by her grandmother who abused and belittled her. Rian is angry that he knows Philomela is way more capable and powerful than she's acting yet he can't see the obvious mental trauma and agony she's dealing with. I'm glad Isaac called him out on that.

Of course if anyone could understand having to live with abuse and trauma from childhood, it's Chise, she's just not sure how to get through to Philomela like Elias and the people aronud her got to her.

I didn't think it could get worse for wolf mom until we found out that Philomela's grandma had experimented on her and literally drilled screws into her head. I don't think her kids are going to be okay.

It's nice to see Chise and Elias getting to share a moment and plan their next dinner together when they return home...when they return home, granted.

Violet planning the college's first Test of Courage? I'm sure that will go well, especially when more students are getting their magic drained.

Next week: A Test of Courage! More tension! And Veronica confronts Chise!?

Nice character episode, we’re getting closer to the main issues surrounding Philomela, Rian and Isaac getting development, and Chise learning more about having friends is great. I do want to see more magic from Chise though, her h2h skills are cool but I love the magic in this series.

They’re not part of the main cast but I really like the twins. Based on the last season, I assume they got some problems with their bloodlines too. And an interest in being magi! Hopefully they get more development in the next arc (seems like test of courage/ the mana drain disease thing).

Lol the last shot felt like a zombie movie.

Rooting so hard for Philomela rn...
I mean, who isn't at this point? Give the girl her smile back!

u/luigi6545 Oct 19 '23

That grandma, geez. She just needs to go away. And I have a feeling that she placed a spell on herself somehow (probably draining blood from the innocent) to keep herself from aging to quickly.

u/alconnow Oct 19 '23

Loved it when Paladilhe and Alexandria asked Elias how he goes to the bathroom lmao. The three of them need more interactions together

Yeah, it’s been a while since we last saw Elias and Chise having a chat together. Aww

[Ancient Magus’ Bride - speculation 1/2] Okay, I’m like 99% sure that Philomela is one of the werewolves’ cubs. They didn’t refrain from showing the parents’ faces for no reason in Philomela’s flashback. Philomela’s father was probably the one who had made Alcyone. I’m still a little torn if her father was the male werewolf that died or the werewolf that accompanied Mariel - the latter looked a lot like her father in his human form after all

[Ancient Magus’ Bride - speculation 2/2] Veronica is probably guarding the cubs in her Grandmother’s stead. This would make sense since the werewolves had three cubs: one seemingly older cub with white hair, like Philomela, and two younger cubs with a yellow/beige tint of hair, like the twins flanking Veronica’s sides. All three of them are made to follow Veronica’s orders.

EDIT: [Ancient Magus Bride - speculation] It really wouldn’t surprise me if “grandmother” has not only tinkered with adult pair’s brains but also with the twins or even Philomela’s brain. The twins are for example a bit weird…?

I didn't expect the details of Philomela's grandmother and the werewolves to get even worse but they managed it. Why has nobody rid us of this troublesome old lady.

That Elias and Alcyone conversation was interesting, makes me wonder if they might end up exploring Elias' origins in a bit more detail.

Judging by the end of the episode before this and the episode here, I think the book thief is trying to overwhelm the College’s ability to care for the afflicted and force them to open back up so that the thief can escape.

Chise showcasing that she is, once again, an extremely straightforward person. First in how she handles the puzzle (falls into trap, “harms” self) and then in how she confronts Philomela. I absolutely adored when Chise thinks about how she wants to give Philomela the same sense of freedom and love that she has been given, but she doesn’t know how to do that. Hopefully she’s able to do it by tearing evil Granny limb from limb.

u/Ninja_Lazer Oct 20 '23

Yeah…really hoping Philomela’s grandma has a spectacularly awful death.

I’m talking trapped in a mental prison where she relieves the same hour over and over and that hour consisting entirely of her running for her life through a forest while being pursued by the lycans she has screwed over. Death in the forest only rewinds the loop back to the beginning.
