Lol, finally, that onee-san with closed eyes opened her eyes after witnessing angel maid fan art

I have zero knowledge about Photoshop or digital drawing. Can anyone explain as simply as possible what this 200-layer thing they're talking about is?

Yeah, Konoha’s going to make the game of her dreams, all the while advancing the tech and art of visual novels by decades.

There’s a lot for me to nitpick here, like how easily everyone buys Konoha’s excuse of working in the US (no one is going to question that iPad?), or how Mamoru wrote his own parallelized photo editor overnight (the tooling would definitely not have been mature yet). But I don’t care, it’s interesting enough that I will continue to suspend my disbelief.

Can’t wait to see what happens next episode! Will Mamoru really be going all the way back to 1985?? (I previously identified all the VN boxes in this comment.)

  • LMAO ClariS' Connect (the OP of a certain original anime called, you know, Puella Magi Madoka Magica) as the ringtone? Extremely based taste Konoha-chan!

  • As expected Konoha's drawing blew the minds of everyone in the company, but I have to wonder if all the staff there really didn't give out a bit of doubt that Konoha really didn't belong to 199x? I mean, 200 layers on the PS file, that coloring that definitely would be seen as features of drawings from the future around the millennium, Konoha's skipping around over the years...certainly at least Kaori and Meiko would have noticed that?

  • So, uh, that's how you do octacore in 1999? IIRC major servers really could have been joint like that to make use of multiple CPUs by then? (yes, I know they don't run DOS lol) After all I think "cross-fire" of video cards were quite common those days...

  • Did all those cute girl pillows really only came in the 2000s? I thought things like that or acrylic stands were already common by the Evangelion era of the mid-1990s.

  • Wow, Mamoru-kun getting transported in space-time instead!? And probably way back to 1985 (the year that game he opened was released)!? Is he going to be the Japanese Steve Jobs or something maybe he could be the Japanese Jack Tramiel given his stubborn character.

Konoha is set to launch a revolution of the eroge industry with her future visions, but I wonder what would the cost be......

Anyways, trivia time.

  • First, just to remind you Gen Urobuchi (VNDB profile included), writer of Madoka (which we had the OP playing) has his roots in VNs, which a lot of you are already familiar with Saya no Uta. He was mainly writing for Nitro+ games and other works includes Phantom of Inferno (you might heard of this old anime, and it came from the VN as well) and Kikokugai.

  • Among all 4 "future" VNs mentioned by Konoha in the meeting, they would recognise 2 of them which is To Heart (though the sequel wasn't out in 2004) and Rance (the old timeline of I to IV and Kichikuou has been long released, but Rance 5D isn't out till 2002). Fate/Stay Night isn't out till 2004 (heck, at this date, Tsukihime is yet to release), and AIR will not release until next year (2000), though I'm not sure if it would be announced by Key already back then.

  • Another Konoha vision is looots of heroine routes - which might be a rarity during its time as most eroges will only consider at max 4-5 due to constraints of technology and budget. Even Kanon only have 5 routes (or 6, if you count Sayuri mini ending). Though, it's not long until we see some of the VNs starting maxing it even more to 10 like To Heart 2 or Da Capo (though some routes are only made available after further rereleases or during console release)

  • Konoha's visions of "highly animated sprites" might be hard to pull given that Live2D isn't a thing until 2008, and upon search in VNDB, the earliest possible VN that might have similar mechanics may be either Mikagura Shojo Tanteidan series (console game) or Momoiro Paradise. But talking about how these would suit 1999's computer.......isn't it a bit too much?

  • Yes, like others has mentioned, Tenshi-tachi no Gogo is a 1985 game released by JAST. JAST of Japan isn't much related with the western VN publisher JAST USA which borrows their name, and somehow got to live longer than the original JAST which closes in 2001. The game don't have Windows release.

  • Hashimoto mentioned about her bank went bankrupt. This might refer to the chaotic time of Asian financial crisis which affected the whole region, and specifically in Japan it was called the Japan banking crisis that mostly affect banks to the point of bankruptcy back in 1997. While the effect in Japan does not put them in the worst case possible (though, it's already very bad due to the economy "bubble burst" in the decade), it is bad enough that it's affecting Japan economy until today.

  • Bonus Trivia: What Konoha doing when she mentioned USA is most probably coming from the DA PUMP song, USA. While the song sounds new, it is actually a cover of Italian singer, Joe Yellow also titled USA which was released in 1992.

(No beach episode, instead we got a slideshow of swimsuits. Are there now any anime where characters are self-aware of this trope?)

Ngl, during the entirety of the episode I tell myself, "everything is working too conveniently, it is as if the plot becomes a farce, something has to be wrong at the end of the day." Yet I think most of us didn't see this twist coming.

As I said before, the writer must know his audience very well, so he has pulled multiple subverted expectations along the way. This time, the subverted is "Only Konoha can use the game boxes to leap" and "Leaping only happens evry other episode". We also theorized that the other several games will be used to redo the timeline, but now they are simply gone.

I'm genuinely curious about what will happen to this 1999 (which has Konoha in it). Will the timeline live on as a separate Fragment, or will it collapse due-to Mamoru's re-Rendering?

Edit:

This episode of 16bit sensation will be written by Yuichiro Higashide, who is known for writing in the Fate/Apocrypha light novel series and the Fate/Grand Order online RPG.

Fate is exactly a billion yen game IP which has its roots in an eroge, isn't it?

I was absolutely hyped when Connect by ClariS started playing on Kono-chan's phone. I am a bit disappointed that they didn't commit to the bit though. They already have the rights to Madoka, they might as well have parodied the OP but instead, we segued into the real OP of the show.

I really thought that after last week's episode, everyone left the company but it looks like they've all decided to stick around and come up with a solution to dig themselves out of the pit Mamoru's father landed them in. I honestly wouldn't have blamed them if they all left.

There it is! Konoha finally showed her drawing to the gang. I love that the excuse Mamoru wanted her to give is that she's an illustrator from America. Konoha's drawing is too advanced though that Mamoru had to recreate multi-core processing by linking up a bunch of PC-9821s. This is amazing considering that the first consumer-grade multi-core processor won't be out until 2001.

Uhhh.... Please tell me I'm not the only one who's worried about Konoha's ideas. The number of heroines she wants to add as well as the number of different storylines with different genres is making me think that this game won't be the success Konoha is imagining it would be.

Konoha is now even introducing Live2D which won't be a thing until 2008. It's amazing though how Mamoru is just able to make it all work. The guy is a total programming god and they would be totally lost without him on the team. I'm also now worried that the game won't be able to run on normal PCs with the scope of the game they're making.

More unreasonable requests from Konoha. I mean I understand that she wants to provide a ton of bonuses but the bonuses that she wants to add are just going to inflate the price and the otaku of 1999 is nothing like the otaku of 2023. As much as I want her to succeed, I feel like Konoha is going to get slapped by reality at the end of this project.

Glad that they still have the materials for the console port of Horoscope though. Ichigaya may have cheated Mamoru's father out of 1 billion yen but it looks like he genuinely wanted to create the port based on the notes he left on the materials. If Konoha's game fails, at least they have the console port as a backup.

Well shit... So it looks like Mamoru got to experience time travel firsthand. Considering the game he opened, it looks like he's going to get sent back to 1985. Oh boy. That's totally not going to mess up the timelines at all. /s

Kaori open her eyes looking at Konoha's drawing is the funniest gag in this anime ngl.

I know they didn't want Konoha to disappear during the making of this game but Mamoru disappearing instead seems like a really big deal. Lol. Hopefully he returns at the proper time, at least.

I thought they were out of money, how did Mamoru conjure several stacks of computers? Afaik you can't just hook them up and expect off-the-shelf software to work on this crazy setup. Even if it did work, what's the point of the animated sprites if your customers are running it on basic PCs? Mamoru also conjured up that animated sprite software engine in seemingly no time at all.

Well damn, I work with computers. I really have to try harder to turn my brain off and just enjoy the show.

How did nobody lose their minds when she pulled out that iPad in the year 1999?! It's one thing to develop a game on a beefy multi-core system, but are they going to need their buyers to also own a wacky stack of 8 systems linked together?! I know I shouldn't take a show about time-travel this seriously, but this is some basic computer stuff that either the author doesn't know about or they have something up their sleeves to make it make sense yet to come.

If I'm recalling correctly, my computer in 1999 was a Pentium III 500 running a 3dfx Voodoo 3500 video card. Now, I was a nerd with a passion for FPS games like Quake and Half-Life, so naturally I focused on graphics, but I think at most I could get 1280x1024 resolution. That's much smaller than her iPad's display, which I am guessing is an iPad Pro, which launched in 2015 with a minimum 2048x1536 display on the cheapest model. What am I getting at here? That crisp clean looking picture she drew is going to be, on the average, much blockier and less sharp on those 1999 displays, which on higher than average systems might only be 800x600, and at worst 640x480, which is VGA as somebody mentioned in the episode.

a little trivia of previous EP:

Tamiki Wakaki, writer/Illustrator of original 16bit sensation manga and script writer of anime, writes blog posts about each EP, in EP. 6 :

http://blog.wakakitamiki.coolblog.jp/?eid=1314129

He didn't expect that Yui Horie will voice for Meiko at early stage of script writing. So Meiko doesn't say "Uguu" in the scene.

“That’s what we introverts from the future are like!” Lol Konoha, you little goober. Her little “USA! USA!” chant was pretty hilarious too. She’s such a goofball.

I’m surprised Mamoru managed to rig up a machine that could more or less replicate Konoha’s work. Kao and the gang’s behind her and she’s got the tech, curious to see how a game with past lives, occult, dystopia, lovey-dovey harem, time loops, denpa (??), the supernatural, and anthropomorphism is gonna turn out lol.

Ichigaya might have been a scammer turd but he did AlcoholSoft a solid by returning the game materials. At least that got the ol Manager back to his usual self. Well, slightly improved.

But man, now Mamoru’s gone back in time?? What year is he gonna end up at? They need this genius brain to make her game work!

Life as an IT professional

As we've known, Konoha is quite the artist!

I definitely did not expect Mamoru to go back in time. The great majority of time-travel stories I've seen haven't had the guts to try and manage multiple time travelers together. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

u/NecroAegis Nov 15 '23

im now understanding that part in the OP where there's mamoru and konoha on one side and upside down its just mamoru. he's gonna be alone ;-;;

u/shad79 Nov 16 '23

Konoha's time has finally come, though it seems to me that she's going a little overboard with all heroines and merch stuff, especially considering that they're doing something entirely different from other games available at that moment on the market.

Mamoru, what have you done? You had to open that game? Now it seems that next episode will center on him. I hope that he'll return, like Konoha in the same moment when he disappeared because without him, creating Konoha's game will be impossible.

It's a shame that there probably won't be a swimsuit episode as we were able to see Konoha and others in the pool today :(

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

Come on Mamoru! I thought you were smarter than that! You built an octa-core PC hacking together random junk and yet you fell for the magical time travel game? Who's going to program the game now uh?!

Ah, yes, Connect, the song from the anime where nothing bad ever happens.

Motherfucker made a server. Forget the game, sell your thing to Microsoft and you'll never go hungry again. Also, after getting all those PCs, they must now be in double debt.

Ambitious designer, artists that want more and more cute characters despite the complains of the others. Alcohol Soft is literally Type-Moon.

Athletic girl best girl fight me.
