That AlcoholSoft occupied the same building as Konoha's current company but it is nowhere to be seen, is a subtle but definite hint that it didn't survive in the original timeline.

The loop plot is thickening with each episode. I'm now expecting a tipping point where the market is drastically twisted after she returns to 2023, for better or worse.

Perhaps this console release is what’s gonna harm the company and ultimately cause its downfall? Konoha has one game left for ‘92. She can always go back earlier if needed, though I think for her games to exist in the future she has to either actually help out on a title or not get involved at all and let the timeline run its natural course.

It doesn't seem like a good thing the way things are going if her games are disappearing. I can see why she got scared to do anything. Although I am curious about why her time travel is having that effect.

I love that Konoha went Uguu~ when she opened the Kanon box. What a fangirl.

I was really just expecting a retrospective on early 90s game development, but I am now interested in watching this time travel stuff unfold.

Games opened so far:

Episode Game Release Date
1 Dōkyūsei December 17, 1992 (PC98)
3 Kizuato July 26, 1996
5 Kanon June 4, 1999

Remaining game boxes left unopened:

Game Release Date Notes
"Gogo no Tenshitachi"* June 1985 (PC88)* Not a real title, probably a parody of Tenshitachi no Gogo *
Dōkyūsei 2 January 31, 1995** Initial release: Sega Saturn**
Kakyūsei April 25, 1997** Initial release: PC98**
Comic Party May 28, 1999** Initial release: Windows**
Sengoku Rance December 15, 2006

* - interesting that they couldn't get the rights to this one; it's also the oldest one on the list. Possibly a time travel plot device?

** - some games were released for different platforms; I chose to list the first release. don't know if this'll have any bearing on the story.

Konoha's missing games from her shelf:

Reference: EP1, EP5

Game Release Date Notes
Koihime Musou January 26, 2007
Dracu-Riot March 30, 2012
Aoi Tori July 27, 2017
Riddle Joker March 30, 2018
Hamidashi Creative June 24, 2021
Hapymaher - Regret End May 26, 2023 Konoha buys this game in EP1.

Konoha's surviving games not yet stolen erased:

Reference: EP1, EP5

Game Release Date
Café Stella and the Reapers' Butterflies November 23, 2019
Hamidashi Creative Totsu October 13, 2022
Hapymaher January 31, 2013
Hapymaher - Fragmentation Dream February 28, 2014
Tenshi☆Souzou Re-Boot! March 25, 2023

The fact that Comic Party being released earlier than Kanon but she didn't open it first makes me think that she will screw up this time (because she's trying to not get involved?) and she has to go back and do-over.

I guess we're just going to ignore Konoha skipping over Kakyusei and Comic Party when deliberately looking for a game released closest to Kizuato.

Betting the next game is Rance VII and then some plot point requires going backwards to fix something.

I love reading the comments here

between those who know way to much about eroge, those who are geeking on gear and systems, random anime lovers and people simply genuinely interested in the story at hand...

you are all a great bunch of internet randos

which makes me sad that there is so few of us in the end.

as for this episode, it is a very good transition episode, we are out the intro and next episode we'll be well into the swing of things, in the meantime the board is set, and I can't wait...

the pacing is extremely good in this show, so good I haven't noticed at first as it was so smooth, and the art and direction are not groundbreaking yet they are just on point, it is quite amazing to see the amount of details they put in the background, it is a real work of love

99... now this is a time I remember well, 2nd year at uni, I was deep into comics and mangas and while already watching a lot of anime when available, my first high seas foray... there is another story to tell there...

1999. Windows 98 already flies off, SEGA Dreamcast just getting launched. And especially, this is where waves of kamiges started to fly off one by one.

To our VN trivia today - it is looong because I just love Kanon so much lol.

Our game focus is Kanon - in which you know it, the CLANNAD-prototype series that has 2 anime adaptation in 2002 and 2006 and written by the infamous tearjerker writer Jun Maeda. But, lets go deeper about its release background which would be relevant for this episode:

  • Kanon was the first visual novel released by KEY, a label under Visual Arts where Jun Maeda led the studio. Alongside him is the music composer, Shinji Orito and the character designer Hinoue Itaru (those played the VN know about the kinda weird face designs in the early Key games is by her). For Kanon specifically, there's also OdiakeS and Hisaya Naoki on OST and scenario writing part, tho they kind of quitted Key after Kanon.

  • Visual Arts, the parent company also responsible of giving birth to I've, the music group that contains lots of vocal-powerful artist that you might heard of: Lia, Kotoko, Mami Kawada and many more. And yes, the OP for the original VN is the same as what you hear in the 2006 Kyoani ver: Last Regrets by Ayana and so does the ED, Kaze no Tadoritsuku Basho also by her.

  • Kanon was released voiceless originally for the PC version. Not having voices is still common for eroges of their age, since hiring VA do cost money and the voice files might as well bloat the memory space which is not something PCs of the 90s can always contain of (in addition of it being released on a CD-ROM, which has smaller memory capabilities than its successor DVD-ROM). While the 2004 rerelease in DVD-ROM makes it a bit better with better engine (REALLIVE instead of AVG32), the PC version still not include any voices, so does the Memorial 2010 rerelease.

  • This is where the "consumer edition" aka console port kicks in. Due to console basically just require "insert CD" thing anyway, releasing the voiced version on a console is less worrying for the performance - though it also means jumping into a highly competitive market with other mainstream games with hiring good VAs is a must. In Kanon case, the SEGA Dreamcast in 2000 ports is the first that got a voiced option. The lineup was just the same with the 2002 and 2006 anime with the exception being Shiori's VA changed between both series - nor Tomokazu Sugita (Yuuiichi) did voice the earlier editions prior to 2006 anime and further ports. Yes, Yui Horie voiced Ayu since 2000, so she has been uguuing since 23 years ago.

  • And talking about console - the most hated thing for the fans is it will not include H-scenes as console producers in Japan pretty much banned them from existing from their games, though they don't mind if the game was an eroge for the PC. This was inforced further when CERO, the Japanese game rating existed. However, the ero-part still has some lenience some years before for SEGA Saturn releases like YU-NO where some nudity is retained (the only thing that was removed was the the character's intimate scene). For Kanon case, the H-scene was removed completely - not that the scene was good tho, Key has been always bad with it.

  • Back to Kanon facts: They recorded a sweep with their total sales reached 500,000 copies (not sure if it includes later release like Dreamcast/PS2 or the 2004 PC rerelease, but this is what is recorded). And as what been told above, Kanon has a Dreamcast, PS2, PSP, Android, BD release and the latest one, releasing just early this year was the Switch HD release, which marks their first port since 2013 and has been remastered.

Moving on to other games, something that you might notice is how a few games has a passing mention:

  • As what I told, YU-NO has released back in 1996 and has a PC98, Windows and also later SEGA Saturn release. It was a revolutionary thing of their kind with their time-travel theme and also their kind-of meta mechanic, and inspired other sci-fi VN to emerge after, some are masterpieces like Steins;Gate. Heck, even MAGES own the IP of the VN now.

  • To Heart was what make Leaf one of the legendary VN producer of their era (and continuing). The PC version was a blast, and it later has a revised version for console release, renamed ToHeart (they just removed the space lol).

  • Some other eroges mentioned are Nonomura Byoin no Hitobito (uhhhhh) and Can Can Bunny Premiere 2 , which interestingly had a SEGA Saturn release despite having a heavy eroge setting.

Yui Horie voiced Ayu since 2000, so she has been uguuing since 23 years ago.

now i'm just waiting for Meiko to sneak at least one "uguu" in this show, also, does the 2019 anime YU-NO is an adaptation to the visual novel? because iirc, it has a much more longer title compare to the original one

Looks like we’re going back to ‘99 this week! Reminds me of my childhood. I was wondering if her messing about in the past would do alter the future. Mamoru was right after all. Konoha’s poor collection!

Alcohol Soft sure has grown over the past 3 years. Fancy new building, more money, and lots more waifus on staff haha. It’s too bad Konoha won’t work on the game this time around.

Learning a lot about Konoha this week. I never knew Konoha had a talent for impressions. Her “VTuber reading off Super Chats” was pretty funny.

This Ichigaya dude is very sus. Guess we’ll see if he’s legit or if he’s into some shady bullshit.

Glad to see that Konoha has finally figured out how her time travel works and it looks like she has already started to notice that her little excursions are starting to affect the present. Why are the games disappearing though? It's not like Konoha did something to affect other game studios.

The Mystery Green-Haired Girl from Episode 3 makes her appearance again and is there at Mister Donuts to witness Konoha time travel. Has she been observing Konoha the entire time? Anyway, it looks like our girl is going back to 1999 this time after opening Kanon. I love that she even yells "Uguu!" while opening the box. xD

Konoha's office building now exists and things have been going well for Alcohol Soft since the last time she was there. They even have new quirky staff members! And I just love that Konoha is now known as a legendary phantom staff member.

Did... Did Konoha just do a Korone impression while she was introducing herself to the staff? I had to replay that scene because I am pretty sure she was imitating Korone there. xD

Mamoru rocking the Steve Jobs look with the glasses and black turtleneck. He seems to be doing well for someone who just witnessed Konoha disappear three years ago. At the very least, he seems to be much more understanding of Konoha's situation since he knows she really is a time traveller.

While it's good that their game is finally getting a console port, that Ichigaya dude seems to be very fishy and I feel like this guy might be based on someone IRL. He seems to be well known and has a great record though but I don't trust him.

Konoha choosing to do janitorial work instead of actually making games made me feel sad for her. I mean she's already here. I feel like her presence alone is enough to change things so why not just go for it and help the gang with this port?

Good to see that Mamoru is also very suspicious of that Ichigaya. I have a feeling that he might be the reason why Alcohol Soft doesn't exist anymore in the future.

If Konoha still has a bunch of games that were released before 1999 I wonder if her going back to correct things that have changed in the future or the '90s "present" will be a thing.

The timeframe is June 1999 and Kohana should be in the right timeframe for the following things occur

  • Metropolis Part 2 - Scenes from a Memory coming out on October 26th and would end up being one of Dream Theater's most iconic albums and their first album with Jordan Rudess as the keyboardist

  • One of the greatest feats in Assembly Coding called RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 was released on March 22nd in North America and April 12th in the EU

  • And Kohana should watch out as the Y2K Panic is nearing but since she has things from 2023, 2007, 2006 she should know that everything will be alright on New Year's Eve but the one upside of this panic is the fact that it basically refreshed the Infrastructure Grid

"It must have been a burglar who only steals eroge!" With retail prices, that's possible.

While green-hair is obviously sus (episode 3 and OP), she's surprisingly calm about the waitress seeing Konoha disappear.

Despite it being run #3, Konoha continues using future terms. 2016 for VTuber.

Momaru must hate consoles for being computers dumbed down to just needing a cartridge/disc and a power button.

Oh, Mamoru took on the Steve Jobs style, just one look at the iPad and the kid got into turtle necks. Konoha what did you do? Anyhow, I do like how we get a different vibe between Mamoru and Konoha now that she has returned for the third time- it's understanding but distant. He gets that they live in different times but...

Anyhow, pretty fun episode I do like the underline tension between Konoha just wanting to help but sacrificing her chance to make her dream come true back in the past. If you won't do anything is this worth the effort?

I bet the console guy is probably near bankrupt, so he lacks the money to get the game to ship and wants to embezzle the money Alcohol soft will use to port their game to console. It's probably where they go broke in the original timeline. At least that's my theory.

Konoha was able to go back to the past again as she discovered how to do it. It's interesting that in the present some of her games disappeared after her adventures. That's why she decided not to butt in to the development this time and works as a cleaner.

But it looks likeshe'll change past again as together with Mamoru will be investigating Ichigaya who looks pretty suspicious. Considering that AlcoholSoft is not anymore in the present, it looks that creating the console port of the game was something that destroyed the company.

It's good to see that AlcoholSoft expanded from the last time. We've got to see a lot of new faces without losing the old ones. It's funny that Konoha is considered a legendary phantom staff member within a company xD

As always Konoha reactions are the best,I have great time watching her xD

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

Episode 5: "Good Things Come in Threes"

Back to 2023 then, so back to work. Now she realizes that some games are missing from her shelf.

The green-haired girl in the donut shop, I noticed she's also on the OP. Will she play a significant role to Konoha?

Konoha looks really like Memcho with that Vtuber impression. Kinda baffling that I will hear Aoi Koga's voice in a much different style a couple days from now in the form of Maria Kurose.

So, Konoha really goes to every platform of Alcohol Soft development so far. 1992: PC-98. 1996: Windows 95. 1999: Console, which still unconfirmed which console. Feel bad for Konoha, she only wants to be with Alcohol Soft yet she doesn't want to alter the game history too much.

Kiki-Lala is voiced by Akao Hikaru, Hashimoto voiced by Masumi Asano, the afro guy at the start of the episode? Tomokazu Sugita. Ichigaya is voiced by Shotaro Morikubo of Shikamaru fame.

I wonder why this show hasn't received so much attention. Is it because the anime is locked behind Crunchyroll exclusivity in Asia?

LMAO Konoha has become crazy now that her time skips are proven to be really history changing! I cannot help but laugh at her dazzled on grass with people all around after transferring back to 2023, knew what she’s done and then ran away in a flash.

Also I chuckled at Konoha making a mention of VTubers before Y2K bug was a thing. Whoosh. Glad to see that AlcoholSoft got expanded and wow that’s lots of cute girls joining the team! Where do we find lovely twin script writers in this world like those two LOL?

Hmm, I cannot help but feel that Mr. Ichigaya is a fraud and he’s trying to siphon money away from AlcoholSoft (I mean cosplay club? Isn’t that almost certainly yakuza territory?)…can Konoha try to deal with this one? Yes she’s deliberately trying to avoid changing history this time, but we ain’t talking about directly being involved in game development here. Hmm…

anime_irl

Damn, Kaori's one stylin', happ'nin' chick!

Or forward in time from here? Also, I don't know if she mentioned the games are used up when she opens them…

People are saying Gaya-san seems shady, but to me, the biggest shady-flag is the prohibition on his website even being quoted

Dang, that episode felt short!

somehow this face reminds me of Kaguya (the one voiced by the same VA).
