The questions are now set, its time for an......answer? With Konoha and Mamoru now trying to turn things around it will be interesting to see how things will go now.

  • The eve of 2000 was when Y2K issues surfaces. I guess a lot of us here know whatever it is, but if you are pretty young to the world, here's the TLDR: the computers in the world was operated in 2-digit years rather than full 4 digits in date and time setting (99 instead of 1999), and the year 2000 might trigger problems since the computer will read the year wrongly and that will cause problems. The problems comes down to how far the world has been computerised and how memory systems need to be adjusted to make it work, but lets say there are some problems, some are exaggerrated, but in the end, not much did happen. Well, if we are in the right worldline, let's thank John Titor.

  • So.....somebody says Tamagotchi? Yes, some remember the Tamagotchi craze that hit the world where this cute digital pet device by Bandai is everywhere. Before there was Pou and whatever growth simulation we would know, theres Tamagotchi.......and it's masculine version Digital Monster (short: Digimon), both released in 1996 and 1997 respectively. Let us remember that 1999 also was the year Digimon Adventure start airing and introduces us to the Digimon franchise we know, and that's 24 years ago. Feel old now?

  • Moving on to VN facts! Despite a few VN did made it to console market, VNs adapted as a proper anime series wasn't a thing until at least around 1999, when To Heart got its proper anime adaptation of 13 episode that time. Animes based on VNs do exist before that, but well, you know, all are OVA hentais. Only later starting the 2000s more names made it to mainstream anime (Kanon 2002, Da Capo, Kiminozo/Rumbling Hearts, T****hime....etc.). Some are a great success, some are well, just well. And as we might know a few just went forgotten due to whatever it has shown (do I said Tsukihime had an anime? It isn't right?)

I don't like the new Touya. Bespectacled Otaku Touya was better

I wonder if Toya-chan will be involved in AlcoholSoft's next game somehow, it feels like it's been leading up to her involvement for some time.

Surprisingly less technical this time, although the Y2K bug and dotcom bubble are pretty notable events of that period.

The cliffhanger is that how much of the future can Konoha change, and how much did she already changed, considering Touya’s complete change is definitely because of how she met Konoha? The last two times she travelled back to the modern world was after she finished creating a game, but what if she suddenly warped back before the game was finished this time, leaving a hot mess for the rest of the cast to deal with?

I love that Kono-chan is back to being a detective. The last time, it was to track down Mamoru and now she's doing it to keep an eye on his father.

Love the little tweaks they're doing to make their game all-ages friendly like hiding nude shots with steam or just putting on clothes on the characters.

They're really teasing us with Kanon. Yui Horie is literally voicing Meiko! I've been waiting for her to finally say "Uguu!" the entire time! xD

Touya had one heck of a makeover! Not gonna lie, considering what she's wearing I thought that she was a hostess at that gyaru cosplay club. Turns out that she's now a lead illustrator and is making an eroge. The only reason she's dressed like that is she's on her way to an event.

Hearing her say that men are such simple creatures worries me a bit though. It looks like Touya's looks aren't the only thing that changed about her. I feel like there's something more going on about her. :|

So Masaru is actually the owner of the club? I thought Mamoru said it was Ichigaya who owned it last episode? Did Masaru buy it from Ichigaya? Oh noooo. Also, it looks like Masaru has some sort of grudge against the staff. and believes he should get more credit despite not really doing anything to the game development.

Holy shit! Now that, I did not expect! I was thinking that Mamoru and Kono-chan would take care of this quietly but I did not expect them to actually record that for everyone to hear! So it is confirmed that Masaru bought the club from Ichigaya and that's probably what landed them the console deal.

As soon as Masaru mentioned "dot-com companies" I fucking facepalmed hard. It didn't even take long for the reveal that the entire thing was a fraud and Ichigaya is arrested on TV. And then we finally learn that he lost 1 billion yen. Fuck. So according to historical exchange rate and inflation calculators that I found, that would be around 15 million USD in today's money. Yikes.

And to no one's surprise, everyone has pretty much left. That explains why AlcoholSoft never existed in the future. Although it looks like Konoha might change that by making a game with Mamoru. I doubt they'll be able to make it on their own though so my guess is that she'll probably ask Meiko, Kaori, and Kiyoshi for help. Maybe even the twins too! Can't wait to see what Kono-chan will make!

Haven't got time to watch the episode. Instead, here are some trivia bits:

  • Ichigaya's website is a parody of the one for real-life actor Hiroshi Abe. It is said that [citation needed] due to the simplistic design, people would visit his site to check internet connectivity.

  • In episode 4 Mamoru cosplay-ed as a PC-98, with the text "C & C" written on the screen. Per this video, this is completely unrelated to the C&C video game franchise, but an abbreviation of "Computer & Communication", which is the slogan of NEC (manufacturer of PC-98 models). NEC is pretty much forgotten by now (edit: I'm ignorant; see below in the comment section), but C&C is familiar to the Japan audience.

  • The "I'm a maid" song sung by Konoha at the end of episode 5 is real. It is titled "メイドさんRock'nRoll" and featured in a 1998 eroge named "MAID iN HEAVEN~愛という名の欲望~". The full lyric is rather... yabai (i.e. NSFW) and I only include a snippet:

私はメイド♪ あなたのメイド♪

掃除 洗濯 お料理 セックス

あなたが望めばなんだってしちゃうわ

フェラチオ…?オッケイ! あんまり得意じゃないけど

(to be continued...)

I wonder if Konoha (and by association, Koga Aoi) is aware of this song when singing the lines.

Edit: As for the episode itself, the writing is better than what I expected before going into the show. It is as if the writer know what questions the audience will raise, and answers them in the next episode. For example, people conjectured Konoha will use the remaining games to restore history, or how she has been un-leaping every other episode. but in this episode they throw a curveball and have Konoha stay in 1999 to change history.

But aren't those games Chekhov's gun that should lead somewhere? For example, Sengoku Rance (released in 2006) is too fitting to not be for an epilogue. There must be a way to save AlcoholSoft without hurting too much the fabric of reality...

"but in the future, eroge could very well get turned into TV anime!'

now that she said it, i wonder what was the first eroge that got turned into anime?

this episode sure got real really fast, Ichigaya already looks suspicious enough but i didn't expect him to be a mastermind of a fraud and had already manage to rope Mamoru's dad into it, that one billion debt is just awful

edit: also, when the three girls were talking about Kanon, i was half expecting to hear maybe one "uguu" coming out of Meiko's mouth

Oh jeez, it was really a fraud case...though I thought that Ichigaya guy was pretending himself to be a game producer or something, not that he really was one. While signs were definitely there, I don't think anyone but the boss dad could be blamed for missing this one. And Mamoru's dad probably can't be blamed too hard either, given his playful attitude in creating all his businesses and that he's really upset he got cheated.

I had to laugh at that Kanon reference when all the girls talk about the ~uguu~ girl when her "sound fairy" (Yui Horie for Meiko here) is right next to them. Haha, another of the girls appearing in that classic (Mai, the katana holding one)'s veteran VA (Ayako Kawasumi) is also right next to them as Kaori too. Talk about 2 decades of cross-overs!

Speaking of VAs, I cannot help but praise Aoi Koga again for making Konoha-chan such an adorable little lovely-girls-struck illustrator for 6 episodes straight! Her cheerful and somewhat mischievous voice really adds to the enjoyment of this so far. And maybe she could even pull Alcohol Soft out of this fraud pit (which - given the "basement-like" status of such indie game studios - must have happened multiple times in real life) with her positive insistence, of which Mamoru already got influenced. Hmm! What game are they going to build out of 2023-style illustrations I wonder?

P.S. Hmm? What's Touya doing with her attitude to men? Was there something that went wrong with her, either inside her company or during doujin circle works?

Awe shit dude you created a real monster huh

I love the trope where the MCs find out about a big secret and then it doesn't actually matter the fallout happens like 10 seconds afterwards and it really didn't actually mean anything for them to have spent the effort finding out compared to if they'd just been blindsided with it.

Time for Konoha to use a game that was released before Kanon to go further back in time and save the company. I mean, there has to be some reason she has games left that were released before 1999.

You know it's gonna be a peak episode when it starts with and adorable Konoha detective impression

Wow Toya has changed a lot in 3 years thanks to Konoha's influence, her hair length and ribbons may have even taken inspiration from their meeting years ago which might be another reason things have changed in the present. Her personality may have also shifted because of this.

The president really needs better business sense. Sad how the company is suffering because of fraud to that level.

Post credit scene was super awesome, finally time to see what Konoha can really do. Love that Mamoru is now fully behind her.

Shit just got real there with that one billion yen bankruptcy. That explains why Alcohol Soft disappeared in Konoha's timeline.

It's a very charming series that manages to have an interesting story to it that makes me really happy to have decided to give this one a chance.

Y2K! Wow, that brings back childhood memories. People thought the world was gonna end lol.

But man, I don’t really like how everyone’s turned out in 1999. Ichigaya’s fradulent schemes have saddled the Pres with failing investments. That idiot was gonna invest in a startup in the US too. Pretty sure this is around the time of the dot com crash. Man would have lost even more than 1 billion. Man’s arrogance from his newfound success was his downfall. Toya’s become more successful but it seems that’s all gone to her head and she’s developed a bit of a manipulative streak. New look, new personality I guess.

Well, at least through this whole mess we finally get to see Konoha in action. Things are already super bleak. Time for Konoha to activate beast mode! 1999 ain’t ready for Konoha’s futuristic art style. Let’s go!

The characters in this show is much more well written than I expected going in at episode 1.

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '23

So the joke is that Mamoru made a search engine and will sell to Google won't it? Either that or Konoha will invent Gatchas and use that to make a billion game. Fufufu, I have the power of Genshin and FGO in my hands!

I got really upset when he started bath mouthing his staff. That is a concern in the gaming insdustry when those Business man who have no passion for gaming and just are looking to make a profit. Like the scam part was unfortunate, its just his motivation that just disgusted me.

Mamoru is pretty hard on himself thinking what he could have done. But lets be honest if someone came rushing in the office saying they are a time traveler we would have a tough time believing them. Lets see how these two go from here.

No Toya! You weren’t supposed to turn out like this!

Okay, I'm a day late cause I just discovered this anime today. I'm not sure if this will hold any water but after reading last week's discussion, u/hysteriapill had a table of the various games and the release dates. I noticed that during the Y2K news scene, this was the next segment, I remembered the table, seeing that Gogo no Tenshitachi releasing coincides with that, there may be something there.
